Mr. Eugene Hinkle
GRAHAM — Mr. Eugene Hinkle, 80, of 326 Forest Drive, died at 11:56 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
A native of Bohaney, Transylvania County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Geneva Whitten Hinkle and the son of Mr. William Henry Hinkle and Mrs. Alice Corbin Hinkle, both deceased. He was retired from Flexon Fabrics and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Essie Grant of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Mr. Wood Silas Hinkle, Mr. Lawrence Hinkle, Mr. Hall Hinkle, Mr. Ralph Hinkle, Mr. William Henry Hinkle and Mr. Horace Hinkle; and four sisters, Ms. Bessie Cash, Ms. Mamie Alice Reid, Ms. Fannie Hinkle Smith and Ms. Hazel Hinkle.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Suzanne Shoffner, pastor of Shiloh Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. William D. Wade
GRAHAM — Mr. William D. “Bill” Wade, 57, of 1921 Springmeadow Drive, died at 12:14 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of 18 months.
A native of Halifax County, Va., he was the husband of Mrs. Laura McAdams Wade, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Wade and Ms. Dorothy Dunkley Brooks, both deceased. He was a retired master chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy, where he served 26 years. He was an employee of Green and McClure Furniture Store. He was a member of Harvest Hills Church of God.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. William Darrin Wade of Concord and Mr. Wesley Damon Wade of Ruffin; a sister, Mrs. Anita W. Brown of Greensboro; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Jerry Tow.

Mr. James Allen Lane Sr.
BURLINGTON — Mr. James Allen Lane Sr., 54, of 803 Delaware Ave., died at 12:58 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a critical illness of two and a half weeks.
A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Joan Carol Smith Lane, who survives, and the son of Mr. Leightman Lane and Mrs. Hazel Bennett Lane, both deceased. He was retired and was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. James Allen Lane Jr. and Mr. Christopher Brandon Lane, both of the home, and Mr. Brian Keith Lane of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Dwight Lane of Chapel Hill and Mr. Dennis Lane of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Integrity Community Church in Burlington.
Mr. Jimmy Burke Hunter
HOLLY HILL, Fla. — Mr. Jimmy Burke Hunter, 62, of 1202 Mapleleaf Gardens Apartments, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Halafax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla., after a long illness.
A native of Graham, he was the son of Mr. James E. Hunter and Mrs. Lois Burke Hunter, both deceased. He was a retired disabled veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Kaitlyn Hunter of Ormond Beach, Fla.; two step-daughters, Ms. Heather Petty of Annapolis, Md., and Ms. Dorthe Chriscoe of Burlington; a stepson, Mr. O.C. Rhoades of Holly Hill; a sister, Ms. Sue Neville of Daytona Beach; and a brother, Mr. Teddy Hunter of Graham.

Mr. Paul Clarence Shepherd
ELON COLLEGE — Mr. Paul Clarence Shepherd, 81, of 1326 N.C. 87 North, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after eight months of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Bessie Alcon Shepherd and the son of Mr. James Albert Shepherd and Mrs. Carrie Apple Shepherd, both deceased. He was retired from Oxford Equipment Co. in Burlington and was a farmer. He was a member of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church, where he served as an usher, Sunday school teacher and trustee. He was a former member of Redman’s Lodge in Reidsville.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Belva Nance of McLeansville and Mrs. Gloria Dixon of Randleman; a son, Mr. Fred C. Shepherd of McLeansville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lalah S. Cook, and a brother, Mr. Arlie R. Shepherd.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church by the Rev. Allen Myers III, the Rev. Jess Montegudo and the Rev. Lester Stanley of the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Amy Euliss Campbell
MOORESVILLE — Mrs. Amy Euliss Campbell, 26, of Mooresville, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville.
Born Dec. 30, 1972, in Springfield, Mass., she was the wife of Mr. Robert “Bob” Campbell, who survives, and daughter of Mr. Roger Euliss and Mrs. Rebecca Holman Swain, who both survive. She was a real estate agent with Lake Norman Realty Co. in Mooresville.
Survivors other than her husband, father and stepmother, Mrs. Linda Euliss of Jamestowne, and mother and stepfather, Mr. John Swain of Mooresville include paternal grandfather, Mr. Fred Euliss of Liberty; maternal grandmother, Ms. Elnor Morningstar of Ocala, Fla.; maternal grandfather, Mr. Hillis Holman of Perine, Fla.; a sister, Ms. Katie Euliss of New Orleans; and two stepbrothers, Mr. Michael Potter of Midland, Mich., and Mr. Chad Potter of Charlotte.

Mrs. Maggie Joyner Carey
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Maggie Joyner Carey, 97, of 2703 McKinney St., died at 2:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Burlington after four years of failing health.
A native of Nash County, she was the daughter of Mr. George Emerson Joyner and Mrs. Betty Baker Joyner, both deceased. She was retired from Webco Inc. and was a member of Hopedale Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Elsie C. James and Mrs. Christine C. Baker, both of Burlington; a son, Mr. O.D. Carey of Murray Hill, N.J.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Miss Sarah Joyner and Mrs. Minnie Joyner; three brothers, Mr. William Joyner, Mr. Charlie Joyner and Mr. Johnny Joyner; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Bob Cauthren, pastor of Hopedale Christian Church.

Mr. Bobby Lewis Thompson
BURLINGTON – Mr. Bobby Lewis Thompson, 68, of 576 N.C. 87 North, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Gerringer Thompson, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lewis Edward Thompson and Mrs. Virgie Staunton Thompson, both deceased. He was a graduate of Burlington High School and he attended Elon College. He was retired after 38 years with AT&T at The Guilford Center as a computer analyst.
He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for four years. He was a former member of the Civitan Club in Burlington and had worked in previous years with the Elon College Athletics Booster Club and the Booster Club of Western Alamance High School. He was a volunteer at Alamance Regional Medical Center’s Lifeline and visitors desk. He was a member of the Stroke Club of Alamance Regional Medical Center.
He was a member of Shallow Ford United Church of Christ, where he served on the Board of Deacons and was a former chairman. He was also a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class where he previously served as teacher and was current class president. In previous years, he had been a member of the choir and the Trustee Board. He was a former coach for the softball team and assistant Boy Scout leader at the church. He was a member of the Shallow Ford Squares and a member of The Upper Room Bible Class at the First Baptist Church in Burlington.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Beverly Christine T. Pope of Swepsonville; two brothers, Mr. Billy Franklin Thompson and Mr. Richard Curtis Thompson, both of Burlington; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Betty May Thompson.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Shallow Ford United Church of Christ by the Rev. Leslie Jolley, pastor, and the Rev. Phil Hardy, pastor of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, and layman Boyd Sutton. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Shallow Ford United Church of Christ cemetery.

Mr. Jerry Leon Miles
BURLINGTON — Mr. Jerry Leon Miles, 26, of 1634 N.C. 62 North, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at the home of his sister in Graham, after a sudden illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Dock Miles Jr. and Mrs. Barbara Leath Miles, who both survive. He was a Habilitation Youth Counselor and a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Persian Gulf War, was a Navy Seaman IS3, served six years in the Navy, four years in Bomb Ordinance and two years in Naval Intelligence.
Survivors other than his parents of the home include four sisters, Ms. Marie A. Burton of Gibsonville, Ms. Kimberly M. Blackwell of Burlington, Ms. Devodka D. Miles of Texas and Ms. Krisshana D. Miles of Graham.

Mrs. Vera Ellen Rogers Cohn
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Vera Ellen Rogers Cohn of 2312 Radiance Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Person County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Perry Cohn and the daughter of Mr. Willie J. Rogers and Mrs. Tensy Mae Rogers, both deceased. She was a member of New Covenant United Holy Church where she was a member of the Missionary No. 1, Pastor’s Aid, the church cook and was an evangelist.
Survivors include a daughter, Miss Victoria Rogers of Burlington; and a brother, Elder William Rogers of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Carl Wesley Rogers; a brother, Mr. Henry Gray Rogers; and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Rogers Van hook and Mrs. Mary Jane Rogers Rone.

Mrs. Sara Jo Mitchell Oliver
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Sara Jo Mitchell Oliver, 47, of 2031 S. Mebane St., died at 1 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at her home after 18 months of failing health, two months critical.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Brodie Jackson “Jack” Oliver and the daughter of Mr. Joseph Hendrick Mitchell, who survives, and the late Mrs. Louise Griffin Mitchell. She was employed by UNC Hospitals in Psychiatry Outpatient Medical Records. She graduated from Alamance Community College in 1994, where she served two terms as secretary of the Executive Council of the Student Government Association. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Burlington.
Survivors other than her father of the home include a brother, Mr. Charles W. Mitchell of Burlington.

BURLINGTON — Mr. Herbert Hoover Byerly, 71, of 727 Durham St., died at 4:25 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at his home after six years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Davidson County, he was the husband of Mrs. Clara Poole Byerly, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Roby Byerly and Mrs. Rachel Hunt Byerly, both deceased. He was employed by Craftique Inc. and was a U.S. Army veteran of Korean War. He was a member of Burlington Assembly of God.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Linda Ingerick of Snow Camp; a son, Mr. Herbert Green of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Terry Jenkins of Raleigh; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Smith of Haw River and Mrs. Mamie Summers of Gibsonville; and four brothers, Mr. Walter Byerly of Ossipee, Mr. John Roby Byerly and Mr. Robert Byerly, both of McLeansville, and Mr. Roy Byerly of Denton; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Bassett Byerly.

Mrs. Lizzie Grey Chandler
DURHAM — Mrs. Lizzie Grey Chandler, 97, of Croasdaile Village — United Methodist Retirement Community died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999.
A native of Granville County, she was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Lee Chandler and Mrs. Susan Sanford Chandler, both deceased. After graduating from Duke University, she began her career as an educator. From 1933 to 1943, she taught at Hope Valley High School. From 1945 to 1961, she served as superintendent at Wright’s Refuge, a home for children, after which she returned to teaching at Holloway Street School. She founded CONDUIT (The Citizens of North Durham County in Intentions). She was active in and received many awards from Durham Human Relations Committee Durham Congregations in Action, Mediport and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, the Lizzie Grey Chandler Sunday school class and was involved with the United Methodist Women at the local and regional levels. She and Wynolia Apple from Bahama wrote and published the book “Food, Clothing and Shelter” in October 1998.
Survivors include her adopted daughters, Ms. Barbara Roberts of Durham, Ms. Betty Chambers of Greensboro and Ms. Joyce Peterson of Grass Valley, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and other relatives in Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethany United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Nancy Best, the Rev. Ralph Fleming and the Rev. Mike Pasquarello. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
