Mrs. Lura J. Murdock
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Lura Ingle Jones Murdock, 92, a resident of Alamance Health Care Center, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at the Center, after three years of failing health, one week critical. She was a former resident of Everett Street.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Lawrence C. Jones and the late Mr. Jesse J. Murdock. She was the daughter of Mr. Ernest C. Ingle and Mrs. Belle Clendenin Ingle, both deceased. She was a member of First Christian United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Leta) McPherson of Burlington; and a brother, Mr. Fred D. Ingle of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Prince E. Ingle, Mr. Koy C. Ingle and Mr. R. Clyde Ingle.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Beth Kennett, associate pastor of First Christian United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Bettie R. Pinnix
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Bettie Rogers Pinnix, 41, of 4566 Matherly Trail, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a critical illness of three months.
A native of Person County, she was the wife of Mr. Ervin Keith Pinnix, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Charlie Rogers and Mrs. Bettie Mae Ragland Rogers, both deceased. She was a graduate of Person Senior High School in Roxboro and Alamance Community College's Early Childhood Development Department. She was a member of Mill Grove Church of God in Christ in Durham, where she was a member of the missionary department.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Ms. Joylan Day of Durham and Ms. Keisha Pinnix of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Charlene Jordan and Ms. Annalean Rogers, both of Durham, and Ms. Priscilla Rogers of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; five brothers, Mr. Michael Rogers of Utah, Mr. Richard Rogers and Mr. Pernell Rogers, both of Niagara Falls, Mr. Charlie Rogers of Columbus, Ga., and Mr. Lawrence Rogers of Seattle.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Coleman Walker. Burial will be in Cheeks' Crossing cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home one hour before the service, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Catherine ``Polly'' Ragland, 31 Jacob Moore Lane, Hurdle Mills.
Mr. Virgil W. Willis Jr.
CLAYTON - Mr. Virgil Weaver Willis Jr., 52, of Clayton, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998.
A native of Valdese, he was the husband of Mrs. Jeanette R. DeLuca, who survives, and the son of Ms. Lucy Y. Willis, who survives. He was branch manager for Cessna Finance Corporation. From 1967 to 1969, he was a teacher with Alamance County Schools, where he coached varsity baseball and junior varsity basketball and football. Later he was employed as assistant vice president with NCNB in Chapel Hill and Burlington. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of Clayton and mother of Burlington include a daughter, Ms. Mary Michelle ``Shelley'' Willis of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Ms. Page D. Moore of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Midway Baptist Church. Burial will be in Piney Green Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mrs. Anita B. Young
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Anita ``Taffy'' Becker Young, a resident of Clare Bridge in Greensboro, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at her home.
A native of St. Louis, she was the wife of the late Mr. Kenneth Wharton Young, and the daughter of Mr. Louis Henry Becker and Mrs. Lily Diern Becker, both deceased. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Teresians. She was a former member of the Service League. For almost 50 years, she lived in Burlington where she was active in the Catholic church helping those less fortunate.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Claiborne C. Young of Emerald Isle and Mr. William L. ``Bill'' Young of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Louise Brinkman of St. Louis; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Alvin Somerville, O.F.M. Conv. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening. A prayer service will be conducted at 8 p.m.

Mrs. Willie C. Paylor
GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Willie Cobb Paylor, 80, of 5604 N.C. 61 North, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at her home.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Garland Paylor, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Elmore J. Cobb Sr. and Mrs. Evie Hornbuckle Cobb, both deceased. She was a retired secretary at Minneola Cone Mills in Gibsonville and was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jerrie P. Reavis of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Pratt of Browns Summit; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Elmore J. Cobb Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bartlett Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Henry R. Sink, pastor of Sharon Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Gibsonville City Cemetery.

Capt. Henry J. Skipper
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Captain Henry James Skipper (U.S. Navy ret.), 82, of 2943 Azalea Lane, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at LaRocca Nursing Home.
A native of Columbia, Ala., he was the husband for 51 years to Mrs. LaVerne Porterfield Skipper, who survives, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. Skipper, both deceased. He served in the U.S. Navy for 28 years, retiring as a captain. Following his retirement from the Navy, he became the director of VPI Facilities in Blacksburg, Va. He retired in 1979. He was a Mason and a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, the West Alabama Retired Officer's Club and the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa.
Survivors other than his wife who is from Haw River, currently of Tuscaloosa, include two daughters, Mrs. Edward Campbell (Nancy Skipper) Jones II of Tuscaloosa and Capt. Hugh J. (Capt. Sarah Skipper) McCullom, USN, of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Mr. Arthur Miller Skipper of Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Maxie Skipper Shuman of San Antonio; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. William B. Morgan. Burial will be in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with full military honors.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Clara B. May
McLEANSVILLE - Mrs. Clara L. Boone May, 79, of 5619 Bethel Church Road, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
Born Oct. 2, 1918, in Alamance County, she was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she was in the Doer's Sunday School Class.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Jean Anthony of McLeansville; two sons, Mr. Jerry Lynn King Sr. and Mr. Charles Milton Boone, both of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Lula Mae Whitley of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Dewitt Hall of Eden; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Willard Roland King Sr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.

GREENSBORO - Brian Alvis Cheek Jr., infant son of Mr. Brian Alvis Cheek Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Barbee ``Libby'' Cheek, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at The Women's Hospital of Greensboro.
Survivors other than his parents of the home include his maternal grandparents, Mr. Jerry Barbee and Mrs. Joan Barbee of Burlington; his paternal grandparents, Mr. Alvis Cheek and Mrs. Faye Cheek of Gibsonville; and his maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Barbee of Burlington.
A private graveside service will be conducted at a later date by the Rev. Randall P. Waugh, pastor of West Market Street United Methodist Church, the Rev. Robert M. Disher Jr. of St. Mark's Reformed Church and the Rev. Robert M. Smith Jr., pastor of Gibsonville United Methodist Church.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mildred Bennett Jobe, 70, of 1905 Lynnwood Drive, died at 2:09 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Greenville, N.C., she was the wife of Mr. B. Warren Jobe, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Charlie Franklin Bennett and Mrs. Nonie Cobb Bennett, both deceased. She was retired from A.D. Pate Printing Company and formerly worked for Burlington Industries. She attended Graham Bible Fellowship.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Jobe Parker of Johnson City, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Becky B. Atkins of Burlington; five brothers, Mr. Garland E. Bennett of Elon College, Mr. Marvin M. Bennett of Gibsonville, Mr. Lee Roy Bennett and Mr. T. Frank Bennett, both of Burlington, and Mr. Wallace A. Bennett of Graham; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.,
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Grace B. Loy; and a brother, Mr. Chalmers N. Bennett.

MEBANE - Mr. Larry Everett Squires, 55, of 104 E. Stagecoach Road, died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at his home after an illness of 14 months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Carol Mixon Squires, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clarence Everett Squires Jr. and Mrs. Dorothy Hauser Hatley, who survive. He was an employee of IBM at Research Triangle Park in Durham. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home, mother of Trinity and father of Mebane include two sons, Mr. Daniel B. Squires of Pittsboro and Mr. W. Jeffrey Squires of Mebane; his stepmother, Mrs. Louise M. Squires of Mebane; his stepfather, Mr. Richard Hatley of Trinity; two sisters, Mrs. Sharon Farrell of Burlington and Mrs. Debbie Somers of Elon College; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Tina N. Francis of Goreville, Ill.; a stepson, Mr. Tommy Neville of Mebane; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Robert ``Mickey'' Anastasoff.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane by the Rev. Steve Moore.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Imogene Hobby Johnston, 73, of 206 Rolling Road, died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after four years of failing health and a critical illness of three months.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. James Lee Johnston who survives, and the daughter of Mr. William Edward Hobby and Mrs. Lettie Williams Hobby, both deceased. She was retired from Monarch Hosiery, and was a member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Gamma Zeta Chapter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn J. Hatcher of Blunts Creek; one brother, Mr. Norman Hobby of Cedar Grove; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Betty Byrd Hughes; and a brother, Mr. William Hobby.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pine Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Craig McMahan, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Burlington.
