RICHARD C. PIERCE
CANISTEO - Richard C. Pierce, 54, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Canisteo, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) in Bradenton following a long illness.
Mr. Pierce was born March 15, 1946 in Hornell to Mathew and Marie McDaniel Pierce. He was predeceased by a son, Mathew Pierce; one sister, Marlene Scott and one brother, Gerald Pierce.
He is survived by one son, Richard (Wanda) Pierce of Ashland, Va.; one daughter, Michelle Pierce of Arkport; three grandchildren; six sisters, Sharlene Thompson, Marcelene (Ed) Stewart. Lavonne Campbell, Deanne (Dick) Edell, Connie (Doug) Frook, Denise (Mike) Schaumberg, all of Canisteo; two brothers, Duane "Coz" (Janet) Pierce of Tenn. and Clement Pierce of Canisteo; sister-in-law, Beverly Pierce and brother-in-law, Dana Scott; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thanks to Beverly Burns, Mr. and Mrs. Casto Sciole, Loretta Hammond and all of his friends in Florida who helped him.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours with the Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
JOSEPH H. WATT
HORNELL - Joseph H. Watt, 80, of Maple Court Homes, died Friday (Feb. 2001) at home following a long illness.
Born Jan. 10, 1921, a son of Hugh and Lorena Watt in Hornell, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Watt Falzoi. A life long resident of Hornell, he was a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church. From 1939 to 1976, he was employed by the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, he was a veteran of WWII (from 1942-1946), serving in the United States Coast Guard, where he operated an LST Landing Craft in the Normandy invasion.
Joseph enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his son, Martin (Charlene) Watt of Fairport; his two brothers, Hugh (Eleanor) Watt of Ft. Myers, Fla. and John (Anne) Watt of Hornell; his nephews, David (Nancy) Watt of Hornell, Michael (Melissa) Watt of Greece, Jeffrey (Rachelle) Falzoi of Rochester; his nieces, Melanie Falzoi of Hornell, Lynn (Stephen) Davis of Rochester; grand-nephews Michael and Tyler; and grand-nieces Theresa, Hannah and Allison.
There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to St. Ignatius Loyola Church on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at 10 a.m. for Joseph's Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. James Jaeger will be celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

FRANK E. VOGT
NORTH HORNELL - Retired President of Steuben Trust Company, Frank E. Vogt, 89, died Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) at Beverly Healthcare in Lakeland, Fla., following a long illness.
He served as President of Steuben Trust Company for 15 years, before his retirement in 1976. He began his employment at Steuben Trust Company in 1930 as a teller.
Born in Hornell on March 5, 1911, he was the son of the late Edward and Bessie (DeWitt) Vogt.
A life long resident of Hornell and North Hornell, Frank was a graduate of Hornell High School, attended the Rochester Business Institute and also graduated from Rutgers Banking Institute. He has resided in Lakeland, Fla. for the past two years.
Frank was an honorary member of the Board of Directors of Steuben Trust Company and a member of the Steuben County Bankers Association, an the American Bankers Association.
A member of the United Methodist Church in Hornell, he was also a member of the former Spencer United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and the Children's Home in Hornell.
Frank was also a member of the Hornell Country Club and a member, former President and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Hornell Rotary Club.
His family includes his wife of 68 years, the former Mary Decker, who he married in Rochester on June 16, 1916. She now resides at the Alterra Clair Bridge Cottage Facility in Lakeland, Fla.; his daughter, Carol (Theodore) Nichols (1232 Brighton Way, Lakeland, Fla. 33813).; his two grandsons, Christopher Nichols of Orlando, Fla. and Theodore Nichols, Jr. of Nashville, Tn.; his sister, Martha Skelton and his nephew, Brian Skelton, both of Oxford, Pa.
Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by his daughter, Janice Parker in 1982.
A service in memory of Frank will be held at the United Methodist Church in Hornell at a later date.

ANGELA A. NIEDDA
HORNELL - Angela A. Niedda, 90, passed away Friday morning (Feb. 2, 2001) at Updyke's Willow Ridge in Hornell, following a long illness.
Born in Caledonia on January 22, 1911, she was a daughter of the late John and Bambina (Yatalasse) Giglio. On April 14, 1929, she was married in St. Ann's Church in Hornell to Vincent "James" Niedda, who predeceased her on July 17, 1982.
A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Angela was a graduate of St. Ann's School and attended Hornell High School.
She was employed as a salesperson at the former Cameo Shop and as a seamstress for the former Merrill Hoisery and the Hickey Freeman, Co. in Hornell.
Angela was a communicant of St. Ann's Church, a member of the Ladies of Columbus and the Italian American Womens' Club of the Carducci Lodge, Sons of Italy in Hornell.
Her family includes her daughter, Joanna Solo of West Seneca; her grand-daughter, Deborah (Charles) Binder of West Seneca; her great-grandson, Vincent Binder and great granddaughter, Lauren Binder, both of West Seneca; her five sisters, Mary Jane (Carlton) Parsons of Brockport; Anna Peterson of Lorton, Va., Margaret (Daniel) Venor of Wheaton, Md., Theresa Ponz of Jacksonville, Fla., and Rose (Tony) Viscusi of East Syracuse; her three brothers, Donald (Ruby Childs) Giglio of Arkport, Francis (Louise) Giglio of Hornell and John (Lois) Giglio of West Seneca; her sisters-in-law, Sally Giglio of Orchard Park, Gloria Giglio of Hornell and Audrey Stidd of Bradford, Pa.; as well as her many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, Angela was predeceased by her daughter, Louise Niedda; her three brothers, Joseph Giglio, Emilio "Cannon" Giglio and Leonard Giglio and his wife Angie, and her son-in-law, Robert Solo.

HELEN C. CONGDON
HORNELL - Helen C. Congdon, 86, of 18 West VanScoter St., Hornell, died Wednesday evening (Jan. 31, 2001) at the home of her son in Lindley, following a long illness.
Born in Hornell on May 17, 1914, she was the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Pulver) Sauerbier. She had been employed as a seamstress at the former Hickey Freeman Company in Hornell and also at Birdseye in Wayland.
She was married in 1931 to Robert C. Congdon who died in 1973. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Robert McCarthy, her son-in-law, William J. McCarthy, and her brother, Arthur Sauerbier.
Helen was a lifetime member of the Hornell VFW and also enjoyed working in her flower gardens.
Surviving are two sons, Robert (Edith) Congdon of Campbell and Karl (Margaret) Congdon of Lindley; three daughters, Donna McCarthy of Campbell, Patricia (Sam) Gregory of Boydton, Va., and Alice (Norman) Woodworth of Hartsville; one brother, George Sauerbier of Hornell; her sister-in-law, Theresa Congdon of Hornell; 15 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews including her special nephew, Charles Congdon of Hornell.
The family of Helen C. ELWIN (SMITTY) SMITH
WAYLAND - Elwin (Smitty) Smith, 77, of 5 Bush Ave., Wayland, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at the Vincent House in Wayland.
Smitty was born Sept. 1, 1923 in Websters Crossing, the son of Ario and Sarah King Smith residing in Perkinsville his early life prior to moving to Wayland in 1949.
He married the former Norma Schledorn July 2, 1949 in St. Mary's Church, Dansville.
Prior to retiring in 1985 he was the Plant Superintendent and a supervisor for the Gunlocke Company where he was employed for over 45 years. A member of the Gunlocke Retirees, a life member of the Wayland Fire Department, Meals on Wheels and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific and a member of the Wayland American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Norma; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Kevin Pebbles of Wayland; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven (Jake) Smith and Linda McLaughlin of Perkinsville; five grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Smith of Reno, Sarah Smith of Wayland and Benjamin Smith of Perkinsville, Dylan and Sean Pebbles of Wayland; his sister, Beatrice Page of Niagara Falls; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A prayer service will be conducted 10:15 a.m. Monday in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church in Wayland. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

LOREN L. "DUKE" SNYDER
NAPLES - Loren L. "Duke" Snyder, 83, of Garlinghouse Road, passed away unexpectedly Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at his home.
Loren was born Aug. 10, 1917 in Rochester, a son of Herman L. and Gladys Florence (Brown) Snyder. He was the widower of Dorothy (Hosmer) Snyder, who predeceased him on Oct. 27, 1986. He was also predeceased by a grandson, William Snyder in 1999.
Loren was a member of the Dansville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness'. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his flower garden.
He is survived by two sons, William (Julie) Snyder of Honeoye/Rush and Robert (Sharon) Snyder of Henrietta; five grandchildren, Brenda Schouten, Karen Puccio, Tim Newman, Robin Snyder and Andy Snyder; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman (Georgia) Snyder of Henrietta; sister-in-law, Jean Snyder of Palm City, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

GRACE A. NEU
WELLSVILLE - Grace A. Neu, 88, of 17 Chamberlain St., died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) in Jones Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 21, 1912 in the Town of Scio, the daughter of Louis W. and Mina Hurd Gordon.
She was a lifelong resident of the Wellsville area. She was married to Raymond W. Neu, who died June 5, 1974.
She is survived by two daughters, Elaine (Dean) Congdon of Cuba and Edith (Jack) Colligan of Wellsville; three sons, Richard R. (Shirley) Neu of Travis City, Mich., Gordon L. (Betty) Neu of Tacoma, Wash. and Stanley E. (Diane) Neu of Manlius; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Denise Colligan Ricci; three sisters, Ella Greene, Mabel Apsey and Edith Mae Gordon; two brothers, George and William Gordon.
There will be no visitation.
Private services will be held on Saturday in the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.

WAYLAND - James Dais Sr., 74, of 3050 Sawdust Road, Wayland, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at the Bath Veterans Medical Center after a short illness.
James was born Feb. 14, 1926 in Waterborrow, S.C., where he resided his early life. He later resided in New York City prior to moving to Wayland in 1952.
He married the former Corine Philip Aug. 26, 1953 in Wayland, who survives.
Prior to retiring in 1989 he was a laborer on construction and a member of the Laborers International Union of North America.
James was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in combat in the European Theater.
Besides his wife Corine, he is survived by nine children, LeRoy Brown of N.Y.C., Charles (Louise) Brown of Ala., Sylvester Brown of Ariz., Tommie (Marie) Brown of La., Roberta (Joe) Altson of Endicott, James Dais Jr. of Wayland, Rodney (Roxanne) Dais of Roch., Willie (Shirley) Dais of Hornell, Michael Dais of Wayland; 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Margaret McGee of Fla., Maggie Smith of Fla., Pearl Whitney Lillian Dease and Loretta Dais, all of New York City; several nieces and nephews.

HAZEL M. CHRISLER
WALLACE - Hazel M. Chrisler, 94, formerly of Wallace, died early Tuesday morning (Jan. 30, 2001) at Three River Health Care Center in Painted Post, following a long illness.
Born in the Town of Wheeler on Sept. 6, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Grace Bellinger Olmsted.
In Avoca on Aug. 31, 1928, she was married to Otto Chrisler, who predeceased her on Dec. 29, 1968.
A resident of Wallace for most of her life, Hazel was a graduate of Avoca Central School.
She was employed as a teacher at the Olmsted Hill School House in Wheeler and before her retirement she was a substitute teacher at the Avoca School.
Hazel was a member of the Wallace Methodist Church since 1949 and enjoyed gardening and cooking.
Her family includes her son, Wayne (Gayle) Chrisler of Kettering, Ohio; her daughter, Arden Masso of Chicago, Ill.; her seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; also her nephew, Glenn (Linda) Davis of Avoca.
Hazel's sister, Elma Davis, died Monday afternoon (Jan. 29, 2001) at the Taylor Health Center in Bath.

ELMA O. DAVIS
AVOCA - Elma O. Davis, 91, formerly of 5 Morgan St., died Monday afternoon (Jan. 29, 2001) at the Taylor Health Center in Bath following a long illness.
Born in the Town of Wheeler on June 28, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Grace Bellinger Olmsted.
In Cohocton in 1931 she was married to Leo Davis, who predeceased her on Dec. 9, 1986.
A life-long resident of the Avoca area, Elma, along with her husband Leo, owned and operated the Davis Hardware Store in Wallace for 47 years.
Elma attended the Avoca United Methodist Church, and enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and her flowers.
Her family includes her son, Glenn L. (Linda) Davis of Avoca; her grandchildren, Michael (Shirley Lynn) Davis of Thurston, Brian (Marina) Davis of Avoca, Vickie (Tri) Phenix of Fort Worth, Tx., Tammy (Chad) Conrad of Rochester; her 10 great-grandchildren; her nieces, nephews and cousins, also her sisters-in-law, Norma Davis of Hornell and Betty Davis of Port Charlotte, Fla.

WILLIAM G. "BILL" CONNORS, SR.
NORTH HORNELL - William G. "Bill" Connors, Sr., 59, of 314 Seneca Rd., North Hornell, died early Monday morning (Jan. 29, 2001) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.
He will be remembered for his love, devotion and commitment to his children, sister and brothers. Bill's vibrant and "up-beat" personality along with his ever present smile will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him, especially Christine Chapman, the St. James Mercy Hospital Family, Hornell YMCA Family and the United Way.
A native and life resident of Hornell, he was born July 17, 1941, and was the son of George and Ann (Morris) Connors.
Bill graduated from Hornell High School (Class of 1959) and in 1963 graduated from the University of Buffalo earning his BS Degree in Pharmacy. In 1977, he earned his MBA from Xavier University.
Since 1963, he has been employed in various capacities of the medical profession, including: Chief Pharmacist at the former Bethesda Community Hospital (1963-1970), Bethesda Community Hospital Administrative Assistant (1970-1972), Assistant Administrator of St. James Mercy Hospital (1972-1979), Associate Administrator of St. James Mercy Hospital (1979-1986), Vice President of St. James Mercy Hospital (1987-1990), Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of St. James Hospital (1990-1999). Since 1999, he has served as President /CEO of St. James Mercy Health System.
His professional memberships included: American College of Health Care Executives, Society for Healthcare Planning and Marketing, founding member and past chairman of the Joint Education and Training Committee of the Southern Tier Health Management Corporation, of the Planning Committee of Southern Tier Health Management Corporation, chairman of the Rochester Regional Group Purchasing, of the Hospital Association of New York State US Statewide Advisor Committee, of the Hospital Association of New York State Committee on Mental Health Services, Regional Task Force for Mental Health Services, Southern Tier Emergency Medical Services (Board and Executive Committees), Southern Tier Emergency Medical Services Council (Board Member), member and chairperson of Rochester Regional Emergency Medical Services Board, HANYS Committee on Mental Health Services, member and chairperson of the Rochester Regional Hospital Association.
Bill was active in the Hornell and surrounding communities. He served as United Way Campaign Chairman, was a member and past president of the Hornell YMCA Board of Directors, member of the Campfire Board of Directors, member of the Executive Committee of the Corning Classic, member of the Southern Tier Social Ministry Board of Directors, member of St. Ann's Parish Council, member of the Alfred State College Advisory Committee, and a member of the Hornell Drug Abuse Council. He was a communicant of St. Ann's Church where he had served as an usher. In 1992 he was honored as YMCA Man of the Year.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Gerard "Buzz" Connors who died in 1992.
Surviving are his daughter, Brigid Connors with grandson, Carl "CJ" of Syracuse; sons, William Connors, Jr. of Rochester, Gregory (Jeni) Connors of Rochester and Matthew Connors of Hollywood, Calif.; brother, James (Katie) Connors of Hornell; sister, Joan (John) Conti of Lewiston; and his identical twin brother, George (Barbara) Connors of Corning; sister-in-law, Eileen Connors of Hornell; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family of William G. "Bill" Connors will receive friends on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

KENNETH H. COTTON
HORNELL - Kenneth H. Cotton, 73, of 7291 North Main St. Ext., died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) at St. James Mercy Hospital, following a long illness.
Born Nov. 28, 1927 in the Town of Willing, the son of Dorr and Dorothy Foster Cotton. He was married April 16, 1949 in Hornell, to the former Marilyn Norton, who survives. He was predeceased by his son, Kenneth R. Cotton in 1977 and a brother, Bert C. Cotton, in 1984.
He was a former resident of Almond and had resided the past 51 years in Hornell, where he was a heavy equipment operator for A.L. Blades & Sons for 39 years, retiring in 1989.
A veteran of World War II, Ken served with the U.S. Army in Germany and was a member of Arkport Memorial Post #1248 American Legion.
Ken was an avid bowler, hunter and enjoyed NASCAR.
Survivors besides his wife include; his daughter, Linda (John) Faulkner of Arkport; a sister, Hazel (Clyde) Bracken of Almond; a brother, Joseph (Patricia) Cotton of Watkins Glen; two grandchildren, Shani Lynn Reams and Heidi Campbell; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) at Robertson Funeral Home Inc., Hornell, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Jane Shumway officiating. Final interment

ALICE W. KATNER
FLORIDA/AVOCA - Alice W. Katner, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday (Jan. 14, 2001).
She was born July 1, 1911, in Prattsburgh, to John F. and Mabel G. Lewis Williams. In 1927, she married Ralph N. Horton, who died in 1930. She married Harry Katner in 1932 and predeceased her in 1982, and son John W. Horton in 1993. She lived many years in Avoca and moved to Port Charlotte from North Port, Fla. in 1987.
She retired in 1977 as executive secretary with the Steuben County Civil Service, Bath. Mrs. Katner was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Twilight Chapter of New York, Daughters of the American Revolution, Retired Public Employees Association, Dorcas Circle, Avoca Methodist Church, and the First Presbyterian Church of North Port, Fla.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara H. Handy of Chadds Ford, Pa.; a brother, Forrest S. Williams of South Hampton, Pa.; granddaughters, Nancy Henry, Suzanne Buholtz and Mary Ellen O'Neill of Rochester; grandsons, Douglas and Stephen Handy of West Grove, Pa.; great-granddaughters, Katelynn, Amanda, Nicole, and Natalie Handy, all West Grove, Pa., Casey and Amber Buholtz, and great-grandsons, Adam Henry and Sean O'Neill of Rochester.
Previous funeral services were held in Port Charlotte, Fla.
A memorial service will be held Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at The First Presbyterian Church, 6 Pulteney Square, Bath at 1 p.m. with visitation from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Burial will be held in Wheeler Cemetery, Wheeler, following the memorial service.

GASPORT - Larry Lee Smith, 59, of East Avenue, Gasport, entered into rest Sunday (Jan. 28, 2001) at his home after a brief illness.
He was born July 3, 1941 in Bath, to the late Earl and Pauline (Nee Voltz) Smith. He was married Oct. 8, 1977 in Middleport to Glenna (Nee Donelson). He was a truck driver for Agway Inc., of Knowlesville. He worked for the company for 38 years. He served his country honorably as a member of the US Army from May 11, 1966 until May 10, 1972. He was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed camping, playing horseshoes and working. He loved to bake his children's birthday cakes and make chocolate pancakes.
He lived in Gasport since 1978, previously of Bath.
He was the husband of Glenna (Nee Donelson) Smith; father of Larry (Maureen) Smith Jr. of Buffalo; step-father of William (Phyllis) Teaven of Lockport, Michael (Roxanne) Teaven of Middleport, James (Tami) Teaven of Middleport, Robert (Denise) Teaven of Middleport, Marsha (Frank) Murrell of Gasport and Patricia Teaven Banker (Kenneth) of Lockport; brother of Harland (Edna) Smith of Bath, Gerald (Rita) Smith of Middleport, Shirley (Lorraine) Smith of Arkport and Thurlow (Bonnie) Smith of Hornell; brother-in-law of Noretta Smith of Hornell and Rosela Smith of Hornell; also survived by 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation at the Sherrie-Bream Funeral Home, 4521 Main St., Gasport, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held from the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fay Cleveland officiating. Burial will be in Cold Spring Cemetery, Lockport.
