ROSE DiVINCENZO
NORTH TONAWANDA - Rose DiVincenzo died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) after a long illness.
Born in Hornell April 20, 1917, to Catherine Changose and Nicholas DeSanto, who predeceased her, she was also predeceased by her husband, Floyd, and two sons, Nicholas and Joseph; her sister, Anna Marie Datini; and two brothers, Nicholas and Joseph.
She is survived by her three daughters, Carmella, Louise, and Mary of North Tonawanda; brothers Francis (Ellen) of Hornell and Richard (Josephine) of Rochester; sisters Mary Leto (Russ) and Helen Pardi (Joseph), both of California, Louise Fratercangelo and Theresa Napolione (Dennis) of Olean, Lucy Chapman (Al), Dorothy and Margaret DeSanto, and Catherine Smart (Norm) of Dansville; grandchildren Lisa, Mark, Kimberly, and Joseph; two great-granddaughters and a great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 25, 2001, at Ascension Church, North Tonawanda.
EDWARD W. ANDREWS
WOODHULL - Edward W. Andrews, 77, of 1593 Mill St., Woodhull, entered into rest on Sunday (March 25, 2001) at Corning Hospital.
He was born in Sayre, Pa., on June 17, 1923 to Basil S. and Bertha Irene Baumbarger Andrews. Ed was raised by his loving foster parents, Olin and Leslie Chamberlain in Mainesburg, Pa. He graduated from Mansfield High School.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater, including action on Iwo Jima. He was recalled to active service during the Korean Conflict.
Ed and Kathryn Kaia Mason were wed on Feb. 14, 1949 at the United Methodist Church of Woodhull.
Ed was employed as a machinist at the Ingersoll-Rand Company in Painted Post, where he retired with 40 years active service. He was very active in various veteran organizations, including the Woodhull Post #1740 American Legion, where he was presently commander, and also membership in the Marine Corps League. He was a charter member and past commandant of the Southern Tier Marine Corps League Detachment in Elmira. He held several offices in the local detachment as well as offices in the regional and state level of the Marine Corps League.
Ed's greatest involvement in veteran's services was his role as a volunteer with Veteran's Affairs Voluntary Services at the Bath VA Center. He served on the Advisory Committee as well as chairing several committees for fund raising efforts at the VA. He volunteered hundreds of hours at the VA helping his fellow veteran.
Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Kathryn M. Andrews of Woodhull, three daughters, Mary (Kenneth) Shupp of Bath, Kaia (Samuel) Hadley and Kelly (Doran) Peters, both of Woodhull; and two sons, Richard (Carolyn) Andrews and John Andrews, both of Woodhull. Also 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren survive, as well as his sister, Helen Campbell of Zephyrhills, Fla. Ed's foster sisters Nina Puryear and Lola Smith and foster brothers Olin Lee, Burdett and Glenn Chamberlain also survive, also several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a great-grandson, Brock Cady, and foster brothers Pete (Laverne) and Buster (Walter) Chamberlain.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St., Woodhull. Funeral services will be conducted there on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Brian Diffenbacher, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Woodhull, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Woodhull Cemetery.
HELEN S. BELL
HORNELL - Helen S. Bell, 92, of 18 Holly Terrace, died Thursday (April 5, 2001), at St. James Mercy Hospital, following a short illness.
Helen was born March 11, 1909 in Alfred Station, the daughter of Bert and Mary S. Green Sherwood.
On Sept. 10, 1937, she married Carl Ross Bell, who died in 1986. She was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Allen and three brothers, Irving, Leslie, and Louis Sherwood.
She lived most of her life in Stratford, Conn., before moving to Hornell to live with her sister Louise Giglio, where she had resided for the past five years.
She worked for the American Shakespeare Festival Theater in Stratford, Conn., and received an award for 40 years of volunteer service to the Kennedy Center Parents and Friends of Retarded Citizens of Trumbull, Conn. and was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Stratford.
She attended the Church Street Court Gathering Place where she had many friends.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen (Jean Macklin) Bell of Louisa, Va. and Carl A. Bell of Stratford, Conn.; two sisters, Ruth (Robert) Wilson and Louise (Francis) Giglio, both of Hornell; a granddaughter, Marcie A. Bell of Palmyra, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m., Saturday at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday at the Hornell United Methodist Church, with Rev. Alan Howe and Asst. Pastor Terry Kelly, officiating. Interment
will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.

BETTY JANE HENRY STEPHENS
Betty Jane Henry Stephens, from both Zephyrhills, Fla. and Montour Falls, NY, went home with the Lord early in the morning of April 5, 2001, at the age of 66, at a Hospice House in Zephyrhills, Fla., where she had been for several weeks.
She was born on April 28, 1934 at the Old Bethesda Hospital in North Hornell to Emily Pamelia Ormsby Henry and the late Forest James Henry from Alfred Station.
Betty was married on Nov. 10, 1951 (at the Burdick Homestead on Hartsville Hill) to Harland Lee Stephens from Canisteo. They made their home in Montour Falls.
Surviving besides her husband Harland of 49 years are two sons, Dale Miles (Lisa) Stephens of Lima and Dirk Allen (Deborah) Stephens of Montour Falls; a daughter, Yolanda Lee (Bill) Peters of Beaver Dams; seven grandsons and one granddaughter; her mother, Emily P. Henry of Crosby Creek Rd., Hornell; five sisters, Maxine Henry of Hornell, Edna (Bill) Kull of Zephyrhills, Fla., Louise (Harvey) Lewis of Troupsburg, Roxy (John) Robords of Howard, Mildred Briggs Stoughton of Alfred Station; one brother Forest Duane Henry of Boutte, La.; a sister in law, Lois Ann Henry Olecharski of Burns.
She was predeceased by her father, Forest James Henry and a brother, James Richard Henry.
A memorial service will be held in Montour Falls on April 30, 2001 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Church.
THEODORE P. "TED" GREEN
WAYLAND - Theodore P. "Ted" Green, 82, passed away Friday, (April 6, 2001) at his home after a long illness.

EUNICE E. CRISS
HORNELL - Eunice E. Criss, 79, of 112 Wesley Ave., Hornell, died Wednesday afternoon (April 4, 2001) at her home, following a long illness.
Born in Olean, N.Y., on Jan. 16, 1922, she was the daughter of Albert and Catherine (Ward) Kuhn. She has resided in Hornell for most of her life.
Eunice was a graduate of St. Ann's School, Hornell High School, and Hornell Business School. Throughout her life she had been employed at several Hornell businesses, including the Hornell Brewery, Hornell Auto Supply, and Tuttle & Rockwell Department Store. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and a former member of the Legion of Mary.
She was married on Aug. 27, 1946, to Robert Criss, who died in 1975. She was also preceded in death by her sister Catherine Almeter in 1995 and her grandson Adam Criss in 1993.
Surviving are two sons, Robert (Mary Ann) Criss of Hornell and Lee (Barbara Anne Bailey) Criss of Hornell; one daughter, Regina "Jeannie" (Joseph) Riefer of Hornell; four sisters, Sr. Alberta Kuhn and Sr. Veronica Kuhn, both Sisters of Mercy of Rochester, Angelina (Hugh) Devlin of North Hornell, and Rosemary Hamilton of Hornell; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

FLORENCE DAY HILL
BINGHAMTON - Florence Day Hill, 89, of Hillcrest Avenue, Binghamton, died March 18, 2001, at the Fairview Good Shepherd Home after a long illness.
Born in South Dansville Dec. 6, 1911, a daughter of the late Ira and Dana Day, she moved to Hornell in 1926 with her family, where her father, Ira Day, and family ran the Day's Grocery Store on Canisteo Street for many years before it closed in the early 1960s. She was a graduate of Hornell High School Class of 1930.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Hill, and a brother, Chauncey Day. Surviving are her children, Jack Hill of Ann, Ore., and Joan Chubbuck and Roxanne Polak of Vestal, N.Y.; and nephews Jim, Joe, and Jerry Day of Hornell and Jack Day of Weston, Conn.
Florence worked for many years in the real estate field in the Binghamton area. She was also active in many church and civic organizations. Service, love, kindness, devotion, and thoughtfulness are the characteristics that come to mind of all who were touched by the friendship of Florence.
Funeral services were held at the Ogden Hillcrest Methodist Church in Port Dickinson, N.Y., with burial following in Chenango Valley Cemetery.
SIDNEY G. DICKEY, SR.
CANISTEO - Sidney G. Dickey, Sr., 87, of Cty. Rte. #30, Swale Road, died Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at his home following a long illness.
He was born Nov. 17, 1913, in Canisteo to Monroe and Rose Jones Dickey. On Oct. 19, 1940, he married Virginia Burns, who survives. He was predeceased by three brothers, Oren, Roy, and Lyle Dickey.
He lived his entire life on the Swale Road, where he enjoyed farming. He worked for Feenaughty & Allen Building Co. of Canisteo from 1947 to 1973.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by two sons, George and Glenn (Lee Ann) Dickey, both of Canisteo; two daughters, Gail Davis and Joyce (Frank) Burdick, also of Canisteo; one sister, Dorothy Eichelberger of Brandon, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mabel Dickey of Hornell; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 1-3 p.m. at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main Street in Canisteo, where funeral services will be at 3 p.m. immediately following calling. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.

ANTHONY J. "TONY" PRATTICO
HORNELL - Anthony J. "Tony" Prattico, 76, of 144 River St., Hornell, died Tuesday morning (April 3, 2001) at Highland Hospital in Rochester following a long illness.
Born in Hornell on Aug. 27, 1924, he was the son of Antonio and Mary (Crea) Prattico. He was a graduate of St. Ann's School and also Hornell High School.
Tony was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the European Theater of Operations during WW II. While in the Army, he received the Presidential Unit Citation, European Theater of Operations Ribbon with five Battle Stars, the American Victory Medal, the German Occupation Medal, along with numerous other medals.
He was employed for over 30 years at the former Erie Railroad, Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, and Conrail, retiring as a locomotive engineer. Tony was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and had served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Hornell VFW, Hornell American Legion, Hornell Moose Lodge, Hornell Association, and Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy).
Tony was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Prattico, who died in 1932.
Surviving are two sisters, Frances Warden of Lenexa, Kan., and Dominica DeFazio of Scranton, Pa.; two brothers, Joseph (Carolyn) Prattico of Rochester, and James (Alice) Prattico of Rochester; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

HERMAN G. LAWRENCE
DANSVILLE - Herman G. Lawrence, 88, passed away Monday (April 2, 2001) at McAuley Manor SNF in North Hornell after a long illness.
Herman was born Feb. 1, 1913, in Springwater. A son of Frank and Margaret (Bennett) Lawrence, he was a former specialist at Foster Wheeler Corp. in Dansville, retiring in 1978. Herman was also a gentleman farmer for 10 years. He married Evelyn M. Hynes on Aug. 20, 1941, in Scottsburg. She survives.
He was a member of the Foster Wheeler 25-year club and a past member of the Dansville Moose.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn; several nieces and nephews, including nephew Frank (Laura) Lawrence of Wayland; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Florence Lawrence of Wayland, Lorena Steffen of Arkport, Morris (Kathryn) Hynes, and Milton (Daphne) Hynes, all of Dansville; and many cousins.

JOHN J. MULLIGAN
BELMONT - John J. Mulligan, 63, of 5798 Mulligan Road, Belmont, died (April 2, 2001), shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
John was born Sept. 14, 1937 in Wellsville, the son of Paul L. Mulligan and Mary C. McGurk Mulligan.
On June 3, 1961, in Ithaca, he married Maria Multila, who survives.
John was a life long resident of the Belmont area. He was a graduate of the Alfred-Almond High School and received his associate degree in agriculture from Cornell University.
He had been a dairy and sheep farmer all his life and was involved in a variety of livestock activities associated with farming. John was active with the 4-H program, and he or a member of his family showed at the Allegany County Fair for over 55 years.
He was a long time member of the Dairyman's League. He had been an Allegany County Soil and Water Conservation committeeman, former member of the Belmont Conservation Club, former Assessor and Supervisor for the Town of Ward, and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
Surviving in addition to John's wife are two sons, Ronnie (Alinda) Mulligan of Belmont and John J. Mulligan Jr. of Hornell; four daughters, Barbara (David) Benjamin of Belmont, Joanne (Bryan) Burdick of Belmont, Diane (J. David) Chamberlain of Belmont and Susan (Robert) Cline of Belmont; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Ingalls of Bolivar; an uncle, John Shanley of Belmont; a special friend and cousin, John D. McGurk of Fairport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

GERALD L. "JIGGS" STEPHENS
JASPER - Gerald L. "Jiggs" Stephens, 74, of Cty. Rte. #72, Dennis Corners, entered into rest Sunday (April 1, 2001) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a long illness.
He was born Jan. 24, 1927, in Canisteo to Miles and Bernice Potter Stephens. On Nov. 20, 1954, he married Dian Norton in Canisteo, who survives.
He was a self-employed dairy farmer in Jasper since 1955. He belonged to the National Farmers Organization and was a member of the Jasper Grange. He loved to hunt for arrowheads, and enjoyed gardening and deer hunting.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, he is survived by six sons, Mark (Tina), Jim, and Craig Stephens, all of Jasper, Dave (Patty) Stephens of Canisteo, Keith (Bonnie) Stephens of Addison, and Mike (Becky) Stephens of Cohocton; five daughters, Karen Stephens of Jasper, Pam (Rich) Chapman, Kathie (Paul) White, and Jeanne (Chris) Rounsville, all of Cohocton, and Brenda (Luis) Acosta of Bridgewater, N.J.; two sisters, Helen Finney of Bath and Audrey (Bill) Typhair of Syracuse; one brother, Harland (Betty) Stephens of Montour Falls; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

VICTOR (PAT) PIRRUNG
WAYLAND - Victor (Pat) Pirrung, 86, of 12 Scott St., Wayland, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Pat was born Feb. 5, 1915, in Springwater, the son of Fred and Clara Vogt Pirrung, and resided in the Springwater-Wayland area all of his life. He married the former Bertha Oliver on Nov. 11, 1939, in Cohocton. She survives.
Pat owned and operated the family farm for many years. In 1948 he became an auctioneer, and in 1978 he formed Pirrung Auctioneers, Inc., and operated it until his retirement in 1991, assisting his son James in later years.
Pat was a member and a past director of the New York State Auctioneers Association and was a member of the National Auctioneers Association. He was assessor for the town of Wayland for over 24 years and served two terms as a councilman for the Town of Wayland. A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, he served many years on the finance committee. He was also a member of the Wayland Lions Club and a past member of the Wayland Hook and Ladder Co.
Pat is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Bertha; two sons, Gerald (Connie) Pirrung of Ulysses, Pa., and James (Sharyl) Pirrung of Wayland; one daughter, Linda (Robert) Odum of Elmira; nine grandchildren, Victoria Pirrung, David (Kate) Pirrung, Jeffrey (Denise) Pirrung, Catherine Pirrung, Lindsey Pirrung, Allyson Pirrung, Christopher (Kathy) Odum, Susan (Thomas) Wayland, and David Odum; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Rita Schwan of Dansville; and several nieces and nephews.

CARL A. LAMPHIER
CANISTEO - Carl A. Lamphier, 82, of Ste. Rte. #36 died Friday (Mar. 30, 2001) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell.
He was born June 13, 1918 in Hornell, the only son of Arthur and Ethlyn (Bowles) Lamphier. He married Frances A. Flowers on December 3, 1944 in Nashville, Tn., who predeceased him in Dec. of 1996.
Mr. Lamphier was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII as a tank sergeant. He owned and operated the Overhead Door Sales, Co. of Canisteo from 1951-1984. He was a 50-year member and past president (1960-1961) of the Canisteo Rotary Club, a 50-year member of Morning Star Lodge # 65 F & AM in Canisteo, the Hornell Elks Club, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Canisteo, where he served on the board of trustees, a member of the United Methodist Mens' Group, and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a former Canisteo Town Supervisor from 1978-1983, and board member for the Town of Canisteo.
He is survived by three sons, Alan (Lydia) Lamphier of Webster and Larry (Jane) Lamphier of Painsville, Ohio and David Lamphier of Rush; one daughter, Linda (Paul) Meagher of Rochester; six grandchildren, Daniel, Kristie, Thad and Geoffrey Lamphier, and Peter and Karen Meagher; one aunt, Mrs. Bernice Mullen of Canisteo; and close friend and companion, Maralyn Reynolds of Canisteo.

HENRY BELANGER
WAYLAND - Henry Belanger, 80, of 8820 Route 36, Arkport, died Saturday (Mar. 31, 2001) at the Vincent House Comfort Care Facility in Wayland, spending his last days in the company of his family and loved ones.
Henry was born October 15, 1920 in Caribou, Ma., the son of Joseph and Elise (Thibodau) Belanger. He married the former Rolande Beaupre in 1942 in Caribou, Ma. and moved to Wayland the same year. He was a potato grower in Wayland, a scale operator for Retsof Salt Mine, and after his retirement in 1970, he owned and operated Belanger's Grocery Store for 16 years. His greatest joys were gardening, country music and spending time with his family and friends.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Wayland, and was also a member of the Dansville Moose Club.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Mathew Belanger in 1995; he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rolande; their six children, Rodney (Dinah) Belanger of Perkinsville, Karen (Patrick) Cardinale of Misson Viejo, Ca., Joanne (Armand) Bisson of Martinez, Ca., Beverly Hart of Hornell, Wayne Belanger (Linda Mack) of Springwater and Jeanine (Jeffrey) Feld of Trabuco Canyon, Ca.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Belanger of Wayland and Lucien Belanger of Buffalo; two sisters, Lydia Beaupre of Turlock, Ca. and Irene O'Neal of Wayland; as well as several nieces and nephews.

JOSEPH P. "JOE PAT" McCORMACK
BINGHAMTON - Joseph P. "Joe Pat" McCormack, 64, of Binghamton, died Thursday morning (Mar. 29, 2001) at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond J. and Julia McCormack, Sr., and his brothers, Raymond J. McCormack, Jr. and Michael A. McCormack. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosemary and James Mullins, Avon Park, Fl., Shirley A. McCormack, Julia and Joseph Fish, all of Binghamton, Jeanne and Lyle Pyke of Charlotte, N.C., Kathleen and Ronald Charsky of Binghamton; sisters-in-law Angela McCormack and Virginia McCormack; 23 nieces and nephews; 30 great nieces and nephews; aunts; uncles and several cousins. Joe Pat was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Binghamton; a graduate of Binghamton Central School; a veteran of the United States Army. Joe Pat was a switchman for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and retired in 1993 from the Canadian-Pacific Railroad. He was an active member for years of the Binghamton YMCA Athletic Club.
MARTIN ROBERT (BOB) WAGER
COHOCTON - Martin Robert (Bob) Wager, 82, of Potter Hill Rd., passed away Thursday (Mar. 29, 2001) at his home after a long illness.
Bob was born November 19, 1918 in Cohocton, a son of George and Catherine (Marks) Wager. He owned and operated the Wager Family Farm in Cohocton for many years. In his younger years, Bob worked at the Gunlocke Chair Factory and at Birdseye Foods, both of Wayland. He married Leona Smith on Feb. 9, 1939 in Cohocton, she survives. He was predeceased by a sister, Agnes Walker, and two brothers, Justin Wager and Leo Wager.
He was a communicant member of St. Pius V Roman Catholic Church in Cohocton. Bob enjoyed hunting and gardening, but most of all playing cards with family and friends.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Leona; two daughters, Jean (Dean) Wesley of Hornell and Deborah (Robert) Thurling of Cohocton; three sons, Robert R. (Janet) Wager of Lancaster, Pa., Donald (Jeanette) Wager of Coopersburg, Pa. and Douglas (Elizabeth) Wager of Warminster, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Brummett and Irene Lighthouse, both of Rochester; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 100 E. Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cohocton. Burial will be in St. Pius Cemetery, Cohocton.

VELMA M. MORRISON
HORNELL - Velma M. Morrison, 98, of the Lutheran Retirement Home, formerly of Warren, OH and Hornell, died at 1:45 a.m. on Friday (Mar. 30, 2001) in the nursing home.
Mrs. Morrison was born October 23, 1902 in Towerville, a daughter of Harry W. and Minnie E. (Becker) West.
She was the widow of Frank C. Morrison, whom she married July 27, 1936, and died on December 10, 1996.
Mrs. Morrison was a graduate of Jamestown Business College and a secretary for Niagara Light and Power in Jamestown and Fredonia.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley A. Abramson of Jamestown; five grandchildren, Edward R. and Thomas C. Cook, both of Jamestown, Dianne L. Joris of Hornell, Denise L. Kaner and Lori Sickelpaugh, both of Greensboro, NC; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marie Destro and Elva West, both of Gerry and Maxine Schruise of Lakewood.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Morrison was predeceased by a son, Edward F. Morrison, who died October 10, 1988; a brother, Richard West; and two sisters, Marjorie Schuster and Eva Lindsey.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today in the Lind Funeral Home, 805 W. Third St., Jamestown. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the funeral home.
