M. ELSIE BUNNELL
BELMONT -- M. Elsie Bunnell, 82, of 4986 Hood Road, died Friday (Dec. 6, 2002) in the Wellsville Manor Care Center.
Born Jan. 1, 1920 in Beaver Center, Pa., she was the daughter of Harold and Bertha (Weddle) Mitchell.
On April 29, 1939, she was married to William Bunnell in Hornell; he predeceased her on May 27, 1994.
Elsie attended various schools in Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York. She worked for Allegany County as a home health aide, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #367.
She is survived by two sons, Richard (Jeanette) Bunnell of Belmont and Dale Bunnell of Belmont; two daughters, Donna (Roy) Thayer of Texas and Diana Zipfel of New Jersey; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Oliver "Jake" Mitchell of Azusa, Calif.; a sister, Rene LaLonde of Fillmore; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, David Bunnell, in 1940; and by three brothers, Fred, Henry and Paul Mitchell.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Belmont, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Patrick Lyons officiating.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond.
Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Belmont Fire Department or to the Amity Rescue Squad.

WELLSVILLE -- Harold O. Link, 78, of 1963 Meservey Hill Road, died Friday (Dec. 6, 2002) at his home.
Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Trinity Lutheran Church in Wellsville, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. following calling hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home.

GERALDINE "JERRY" MOORE
SCIO -- Geraldine "Jerry" Moore, 72, formerly of Medina, died Saturday (Nov. 30, 2002) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a recent diagnosis of acute leukemia.
Born Nov. 5, 1930, she resided in the Town of Warsaw before moving to Medina. She recently made the move to Scio for a change of scenery and to help her son and daughter-in-law with their new business.
She spend most of her time at CJ's Place Restaurant in Scio, helping remodel, as well as waitressing. She enjoyed a good conversation with the customers, and was well liked by all who knew her. She made several new friends, and did a great deal to help others.
Surviving her are five sons, Thomas (Nancy) Sager, Steven (Linda) Colon and Carlos Colon, all of Medina, Donald (Crystal) Holcomb of Lockport and Joseph (Sheryl) Colon of Scio; a daughter, Rose (Fred) Bellinger of Medina; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Scio Church of Christ, with a gathering at CJ's Place Restaurant to be held immediately following.
Funeral and burial arrangements will take place in Medina.

RUTH C. STARKS
WAYLAND -- Ruth C. Starks, 79, a resident of the LaRue Home, died Saturday (Dec. 7, 2002) in Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, after a long illness.
Born June 21, 1923 in West Valley, she was the daughter of Nelson and Effie (Beabout) Starks, Sr.
She had previously resided in Wellsville and Sonyea.
She is survived by two brothers, William Starks of Wellsville, and Nelson Starks, Jr. of Friendship; three sisters, Mildred Tait, Lois Kazarara and Norma Sisson, all of Olean; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Donald and James Starks; and by a sister, Margaret Clemons.
Private services will be held in the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville, at the family's convenience.

PHYLLIS I. MAHANY
ARKPORT -- Phyllis I. Mahany, 71, of 18326 S.E. Birdie Lane, Tequesta, Fla., formerly of Arkport, died Sunday afternoon (Dec. 1, 2002) at her home, following a long illness.
Born in Fort Fairfield, Maine, on Dec. 25, 1930, she was the daughter of Henry and Bernice (Manter) Milliard, and had resided in Fort Fairfield, Maine, during her younger years.
On Nov. 26, 1947, she married Patrick Mahany, who survives. In 1948, they moved to Arkport, where together they owned and operated Patrick E. Mahany & Sons Inc. potato farms for about 34 years. They had resided in Tequesta, Fla. since 1984, while spending their summers at Sun Valley Camp Sites in Arkport.
While in Arkport Phyllis was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and had served as principal and teacher in the CCD program. She had also been employed for several years as a nurse's aid at St. James Mercy Hospital. She was an avid skier, skilled quilter and dedicated camper, while traveling throughout the United States, following her retirement.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Leoned Milliard, Trefflee Milliard, John Milliard and David Milliard; and also her grandson, Anthony Mahany.
In addition to her husband, Patrick "Pat" Mahany, survivors include four sons, Patrick Mahany Jr. of Westminster, Colo., Timothy Mahany of Warren, N.J., Sean (Nancy) Mahany of Parker, Colo., and Kevin (Christine) Mahany of Arkport; one daughter, Michelle (John) Fawcett of Tequesta, Fla.; five sisters, Irene (Roland) Laborie of Huntington, Conn., Jeanette (Joe) Mahany of Silver Lake, Yvonne Milliard of Fort Fairfield, Maine, Deleana Foster of Fort Fairfield, Maine, and Lois Ann Shaw of Mapleton, Maine; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family of Phyllis I. Mahany will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Phyllis' family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to Hospice of Martin & St. Lucie, Inc., 1201 South East Indian St., Stuart, FL 34997. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

RAY E. STRAWN
ERIE, Pa. -- Ray E. Strawn, 88, of Erie, Pa., formerly of Hornell, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2002) at the Presbyterian Lodge.
He was born in Oxford on Jan. 17, 1914, the son of the late Clarence and Ruth Wainright Strawn. He had resided in Erie, Pa. since 1994. He attended the Church of Mount Zion.
He was a construction supervisor with the school districts in the Binghamton and Hornell areas until his retirement.
He enjoyed restoring antiques and was an avid hunter and reader.
Survivors include his second wife, Eileen McMillen Strawn; one daughter, Jane (Rev. Daniel) Caram of Erie, Pa.; four sons, Allen (Violet) Strawn of Binghamton, Kendall (fiancˇe, Debbie) Strawn of Lincolnville, Pa., Philip (Cathy) Strawn of Vestal and Dennis (Ruth) Strawn of Titusville, Pa.; one sister, Rebecca Ostlund of California; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Demeree Strawn.
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., West, 536 West 10th St., Erie, Pa., today from 7-9 p.m. and are invited to attend the funeral service there at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will be in Perch Pond Cemetery, Nineveh.

LOUIS T. QUAIT
NUNDA -- Louis T. Quait, 90, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2002).
He was born Nov. 1, 1912 in Groveland, the son of William and Ellen Sarvis Quait. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Quait of Nunda; two daughters, Janet Baldwin of Corfu and Jacqueline (Walter) Richardson of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth McGee of Groveland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Mann Funeral Home in Nunda. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. David Peck officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Dalton.
Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Nunda Ambulance, the Nunda Kiwanis, or the Livingston County Hospice.

LAURIE ANNE SHIFFLETT
ELKTON, Va. -- Laurie Anne Shifflett, 38, of Elkton, Va., died Monday (Dec. 2, 2002) at her home.
She was born Jan. 30, 1964 in Bath, the daughter of Marcia Anne Kimball Shaver of Bath and the late Thomas Jene Shaver. She was a housewife and was employed at Tru-kut Door Company and Great Eastern Resorts. She attended the Elkton Pentecostal Church and was baptized at St. Pius Catholic Church in Cohocton.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Fred Junior "Jimmy" Shifflett; step-mother, Loretta Shaver, Rochester; two sons, Fred Shifflett Jr., James R. Shifflett, both of Elkton, Va.; a step-son, Kevin Shifflett, Elkton, Va.; a daughter, Kimberly Lynn Shifflett, Elkton, Va.; a step-daughter, Theresa Cumberland, Elkton, Va.; a brother, Timothy A. Shaver, Fredericksburg, Va.; two sisters, Cynthia L. Crossman, Savona; Kristina M. Yarrison, Bath; and one grandchild.
The family will receive friends this evening 7-8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home, Elkton, Va. Friends may also call at the home of Kevin Shifflett at any time. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Father Dan Bain conducting the service. Burial will be in The Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton, Va.

DONALD W. NORTON
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Donald W. Norton, 87, passed away from pulmonary fibrosis, surrounded by family, Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at the Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minn.
Donald was born in Hornell on Feb. 8, 1915. He lived in Hornell and Howard until 1980. From 1980 until Nov. 2002, he and his wife Eleanor resided in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Donald was a member and past master of the Evening Star Lodge #44 F&AM in Hornell, a member of the New York Rite Bodies in Hornell, 32 degree Holder of the York Cross of Honor and a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the State of New York. He worked as a yard switchman for the Erie and Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and for the New York Department of Transportation in Hornell. He and Eleanor were members of Park Methodist Church in Hornell and then First United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Friends and family will miss Don's good humor, great golf stories and his steadfast commitment and loyalty to all,
He is survived by his daughter, author and educator, Donna (James R.) Norton Swindal of Burnsville, Minn.; granddaughter, Mindy Sebring of Rochester, Minn.; grandson, Jim Sebring of Apple Valley, Minn.; niece, Mary Ann (Frank) Losecco of Hornell.

DALE G. FLINT
WOODHULL -- Dale G. Flint, 59, of 3881 Main St., Jasper, passed away Tuesday (Dec. 3, 2002) unexpectedly.
Born in the Town of Jasper, Aug. 16, 1943, he was the son of Earl and Marie Welch Flint.
A graduate of Jasper Central School, he at one time was employed at the R.F. Reynolds Co. of Woodhull and was presently employed as a supervisor at Dresser Rand Co. of Painted Post.
Dale was a member of the United Church of Jasper, and for more than 20 years had been a member of the Board of Education of the former Jasper Central School and the present Jasper-Troupsburg Central School District.
He married Rose Marie Walrath on April 6, 1962, she survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Jonathan (Belinda) Flint of Jasper, Kyle (Shelia) Flint of Arkport, Eric (Cindy) Flint of Jasper and Jason (Michelle) Flint of Woodhull; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brothers, Earl Flint, Elijah Flint and Arnold Flint, all of Hornell, and Duane Flint of Jasper; his sisters, Bessie Peters of Canaseraga, Madeline Cassavino of Rochester, Jeannette Gavitt of Canisteo, Sharon Gibbons of Olean and Marlene Friends of Woodhull; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald and Carl Flint.
Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St., Woodhull. Funeral and committal services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Jasper, with the Rev. David Barnard, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Jasper Cemetery.

ALBERT L. STAGE
CANISTEO -- Albert L. Stage, 71, of County Route 119, Adrian, entered into rest on Tuesday (Dec. 3, 2002) at St. James Mercy Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Albert was born Sept. 28, 1931 in Greenwood to George and Mabel Doty Stage. He married Lois Cane, Jan. 9, 1965, in Cameron, who survives. He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Willis Stage; and three sisters, Roberta Preston, Minzie Groves and Ella House.
He and his family had resided in Adrian for the past 22 years. He was a former delivery man for General Tire of Hornell and a member of the Canisteo American Legion.
In addition to his wife, Lois, he is survived by one son, Albert "Bill" (Tamara) Stage of Adrian; four daughters, Wendy Howland of Canisteo, Minzie Stage of Olean, Lois (Robert) Houghtaling of Hornell and Donna (Robert) Guinnip of Knoxville, Pa.; 13 grandchildren including Benjamin Stage of Adrian, who has been raised by Albert and Lois; five sisters, Bertha (Abe) Nichols of Waverly, Peggy (Clyde) Quick of Adrian, Beverly Kemp of Hornell, Jean Ebner of Canisteo and Donna (Lee) Hallett of Canisteo; and several nieces and nephews.
At Albert's request there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Canisteo American Legion, West Main Street in Canisteo.
Arrangements are by the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.

JOHN ROBERT HALL
CANASTOTA -- John Robert Hall, 52, of 2600 Kennedy Lane, Canastota, died Sunday (Dec. 1, 2002) at his residence.
Born July 13, 1950 in Dansville, he was the son of Robert and Isabel Hall. He was a resident of Cortland and the Central New York area for 15 years, before moving to Canastota last year.
John graduated from Canisteo High School in 1968. He earned his bachelors degree in vocational technology from SUNY Oswego in 1993. He was co-founder in 1995 of the Training Company Inc. of Canastota, which provides training in industrial technology. He was an I.B.E.W. electrician at Cornell University for nine years, and a senior member of the Instrument Society of America. He was also an amateur HAM radio operator with the call sign of WB2UHK and a former volunteer firefighter.
He served in England with the US Air Force from 1970-1978.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jane (Terry) Hall; one daughter, Victoria Hall of Canastota; one son, Christopher J. Hall of Syracuse; and one sister, Susan Hall of North Syracuse.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Chittenango, Arch and Race Streets, Chittenango.
Contributions may be made to the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Co., Route 31, Bridgeport, N.Y. 13030.

MARGARET E. LEHMAN
HORNELL -- Margaret E. Lehman, 92, formerly of 89 N. Church St., died Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at the Hornell Gardens, following a long illness.
Born Dec. 5, 1910 in Franklinville, she was the daughter of Albert and Katherine Coyle Perry. She had lived most of her life in Hornell.
Margaret was employed as a cashier for the former ACME Market in Hornell, retiring in 1972. She attended the former Spencer United Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church of Hornell.
She was predeceased by her son, William Lehman in 1960; and her husband, Herman "Bill" Lehman in 1989.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Loleta Strong of Wellsville; two grandchildren; and two nieces.
The family will be present to receive friends Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours, with the Rev. Michael Childs officiating. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.

ERNESTINE L. FANTON
WELLSVILLE -- Ernestine L. Fanton, 86, of 3025 Madison Hill Road, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
Born Feb. 18, 1916 in Wellsville, she was the daughter of Charles and Maude (Halladay) Vaughn. On July 15, 1933 in Wellsville, she married Melvin E. Fanton, who predeceased her on Jan. 5, 1995.
Ernestine was a life-long resident of Wellsville, and a graduate of Wellsville High School. She and her husband had operated a dairy farm on Madison Hill for many years. She was later employed by Dr. Roger Blaisdell, M.D. and Dr. Edwin Comstock, Sr., M.D., both of Wellsville. Following her retirement, she was a volunteer with the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary from 1995 to July of 2002, and had attended the Wellsville First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Naomi (Gary) Harms of Belfast; two granddaughters, Crystal (Joseph) Wiech of Scio and Stephanie (Kirby) Pierce of Olean; four great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Wiech, Zachary Wiech, Kody Pierce and Kelsey Pierce; as well as several nephews and a niece. She was also survived by a special long-time friend, John Hoagland of Belmont.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Herbert M. Vaughn, in 1987.
Friends are invited to call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Lee Williams officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville.

BRUCE MAKER
SWAIN -- Bruce Maker, 63, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003).
Born June 3, 1939 in Nunda, he was the son of Charles and Vivian (Stewart) Maker.
He served in the U.S. Army, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Bruce belonged to the American Legion, Moose Club and the Dalton Masonic Lodge.
He was predeceased by his mother, Vivian.
He is survived by his father, Charles, of Nunda; a brother, Keith Maker of Edgewater, Fla.; a sister, Janice Orton of Dalton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Saturday from 12-2 p.m. at the Mann Funeral Home in Nunda, where a memorial service will immediately follow calling hours at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Peck officiating. Burial will be in Hunt Hollow Cemetery, Portage.

RUTH T. MINIUM
HORNELL -- Ruth T. Minium, 86, a resident of Hornell Gardens, formerly of 35 Adsit St., died Friday evening (Feb. 7, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital.
Born April 4, 1916 in Hornell, she was the daughter of Vern and Nelly (Bentzier) Turner. She was a native and life resident of Hornell. She had been a member of the former Park United Methodist Church of Hornell.
Ruth was married to Wayne Minium, who died Dec. 23, 1985.
Surviving her are several cousins.
At Ruth's request, there will be no prior calling hours. Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, with the Rev. Beth Kottemann officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery.

MARTHA W. PRIOR
ARKPORT -- Martha W. Prior, 94, of 2 Hurlburt Street, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 8, 1908 in Falconer, she was the daughter of Bert and Hattie (Hallock) Thayer. On Oct. 18, 1947 in Arkport, she was married to Merton A. Prior, who died in 1990. Earlier, she was married to Harold C. Neale, who died in 1946. She was also predeceased by a son, David Neale, in 1988, a daughter, Viola Anderson, in 1994; three sisters and two brothers.
A former resident of Wayland, Dansville, Canaseraga and Bishopville, she has resided in Arkport since 1979. Martha was a member of the Arkport United Methodist Church, and was an avid crochetter.
She is survived by two daughters, Esther M. Luskus of Arkport and Wilma J. Dunham of Hornell; a son, Jack (Carolyn) Neale of Houston, Texas; 26 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior calling hours. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Arkport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Allen and the Rev. Kristen Allen officiating. Burial will be in Arkport Cemetery, Arkport.

SHIRLEY A. SHAVER
WELLSVILLE -- Shirley A. Shaver, 67, of 19 Hamilton St., died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at home, surrounded by her family, following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 29, 1935 in North Tonawanda, she was the daughter of Herman and Albertine (Badrow) Wrege. On April 23, 1955 in North Tonawanda, she married Herbert Shaver, who predeceased her on April 4, 1996.
Shirley had been a resident of Wellsville since 1995. She was a 1953 graduate of North Tonawanda High School, and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wellsville.
She is survived by two sons, Gary (Julie) Shaver of Wellsville and Kevin Shaver of Gilbert, Az.; two daughters, Becky (Rick) Biggins of Atlanta, Ga. and Doreen (Larry) Brant of Wellsville; 14 grandchildren, Elisa Shaver, Brandi Shaver, Travis Shaver, Justin Jacoby, Keith Biggins, Sarah Biggins, Rick Biggins, Jenelle Biggins, Billy Brant, Michael Brant, Mellissa Brant, Kevin Shaver, Jr., Rochelle Shaver and Stefanie Shaver; a brother, Herman Wrege of North Tonawanda; two sisters, Irene Ramo of Tonawanda and Gladys Hein of North Tonawanda; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by five sisters, Lena Lee, Betty Thaw, Violet Bahne, Lindy Schofield and Esther Miller.
There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in North Ridge Cemetery, Wilson.
Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Trinity Lutheran Church, or to Home Care and Hospice.

DORRENA B. SCHUBMEHL
WAYLAND -- Dorrena B. Schubmehl, 95, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at the home of her daughter, Gene Brunswick, after a brief illness.
Dorrena was born July 30, 1907 in Cohocton, the seventh of 10 children of Alonzo and Carrie (Kimbel) Jacobs. She married Frederick Schubmehl Sr. on April 26, 1925; he predeceased her on Dec. 16, 1969. Dorrena had worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the former Wayland and Dansville hospitals, retiring in 1974.
Dorrena enjoyed spending time with her family at her yearly summer birthday parties, also at Christmas and throughout the year. Until her recent illness, she enjoyed reading, search-a-word puzzles, knitting, crocheting, listening to music and spending time on the porch in the summer months.
She is survived by four sons, Robert (Patricia) Schubmehl, Frederick (Junior) Schubmehl, Richard (Ann) Schubmehl and Ronald Schubmehl, all of Wayland; one daughter, Gene Brunswick of Wayland; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Wallace and Loretta Wallace, both of Virginia; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 100 E. Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, with Rev. Osceola Wharton officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Perkinsville.
Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in memory of Dorrena B. Schubmehl.
