MARJORIE A. 'BERTIE' BROWNELL
WELLSVILLE -- Marjorie A. "Bertie" Brownell, 82, of 453 State Route 19 South, passed away Thursday (May 29, 2003) in the Wellsville Manor Care Center.
Born Feb. 2, 1921 in the town of Scio, she was a daughter of Ulysses and Vianna (Rounds) Jackson. She was married on Jan. 18, 1938 to Leon Brownell, who predeceased her on Dec. 28, 1985.
Bertie was a life long resident of the Wellsville area who enjoyed playing bingo and doing crossword puzzles. She was a life member of the Alma Rod and Gun Club.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Yeager, six brothers, five sisters and a great-grandson, Howard J.W. Yeager.
She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis (James) Neal of Olean; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille (Alvin) Kellogg of Roulette, Pa.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. L. Mericle officiating.
Burial will be in Yorks Corners Cemetery.

DORIS O. ROBBINS
AVOCA -- Doris O. Robbins, 73, of 5177 Loucks Pond Rd., died Saturday morning (May 31, 2003) at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, after a short illness.
Born in Brookfield, Pa., on Jan. 22, 1930, she was a daughter of the late George and Belle Cady Parker. On Feb. 25, 1950, she was married at her parent's home in Jasper to Joseph E. Robbins Jr., who survives.
A graduate of Jasper Central School, Doris had resided in the Avoca area most of her married life.
She was homemaker and also bookkeeper and co-partner with her husband of the family business, Robbins Racing Stables. She also served as a worker for the U.S. Census and the Farm Census.
Doris was an avid card player and organized many card tournaments. She enjoyed race horses, reading, doing crosswords and spending time with her grandchildren.
Her family includes her husband of 53 years, Joseph; her son, Douglas (Dora) Robbins of Hornell; four daughters, Joyce (Kenneth) Parsels, Tammy Robbins, Jineen Geffers and Bonnie (Kevin) Kowalcyk, all of Avoca; her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; her two brothers, Lyle (Minnie) Parker and Elden (Julia) Parker, all of Bath; her three sisters, Marjorie (Edward) Robie of Savona, Marion Parker of Corning and Sandy Roosa of Stone Ridge; also her many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Avoca Funeral Home (formerly Bond-Davis & Bishop Funeral Home), 22 N. Main St., Avoca. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kanona United Methodist Church. Committal services and interment

PHYLLIS A. McDANIELS
HORNELL -- Phyllis A. McDaniels, 84, of Church Street Court, passed away Friday (May 30, 2003) at the Steuben County Health Related Facility in Bath.
She was born in North Honell on May 31, 1918, a daughter of Howard and Florice Brink McDaniels.She was a graduate of Hornell High School Class of 1937. She attended Nyack College and Tocoa Falls College, and later was employed as a secretary for both colleges.
She returned to Hornell about 1965 following her retirement. She had been a secretary for the Hornell Police Department and a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Hornell.
Surviving are two brothers, Everett (Hazel) McDaniels of Canton, Ohio, and Paul (Joyce) McDaniels of Canisteo; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Samuel Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.

FRANCES J. CAVANAUGH
WELLSVILLE -- Frances J. Cavanaugh, 72, 3244 First St., Wellsville, died Saturday (May 31, 2003) at home wit her family.
She was born Feb. 4, 1931, in Olean, the daughter of Benjamin R. and Myrtle I. Severson Lee.
She was a graduate of Bolivar Central School.
She is survived by two sons, Robert (Mary) Cavanaugh of Ballston Spa and William (Ruth) Cavanaugh of Wellsville; a daughter, Barbara (Ron) Lanphier of Wellsville; seven grandchildren, Christy (Colin) Dunn, Mark (Rebecca) Cavanaugh, David Cavanaugh, Debi (David) Martin, Bradley Cavanaugh, Jennifer Lanphier and Scott Lanphier.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Beth L. Cavanaugh, on Aug. 12, 1971.

LAURA I. HILL
PERKINSVILLE -- Laura I. Hill, 63, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Friday (May 30, 2003) at her home.
Laura was born Feb. 12, 1940 in Dansville, a daughter of Roman and Ruth (Kimmel) Kinz. She was a graduate of the Wayland Central School. On Sept. 6, 1958, she was married to Ronald S. Hill, who predeceased her on Nov. 7, 1992.
She was also predeceased by her son, Brian A. Hill on Aug. 6, 1995.
Laura was an employee of Hon Industries (Gunlocke Co.) in Wayland, retiring in 2002. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Perkinsville. Some of her hobbies were traveling, birds and bird watching, gardening, going to professional baseball games and mostly spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Hill of Wayland, Betty Hill (Todd Wright) of Prattsburg and Kathy (Pete) Madamopoulos of Hornell; two sons, Kevin (Peggy) Hill of Perkinsville and Roman Hill (Tammy Brick) of Leicester; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three brothers, Francis Kinz and Herman Kinz, both of Wayland and Raymond (Mary) Kinz of Rochester; one sister, Clara (Glenn) Kreiley of Dansville; one brother-in-law, Joe Tice of South Carolina; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

FREDERICK W. RATHBURN
OSSIAN -- Frederick W. Rathburn, 65, went to be with his lord and savior Sunday (Dec. 15, 2002) with loving family by his side, after a two-year courageous battle with cancer.
Fred was born May 24, 1937, in Dansville, a son of Benjamin A. and Margaret (Shumaker) Rathburn. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and Dansville Central School.
He was the floor manager at the former Happyland roller-skating rink in Wayland, also the Skateland roller-skating rink in Dansville, where he was affectionately known as Freddie Froglegs. He was an exceptional roller-skater, skating in many area tournaments in his younger years.
Fred worked as a welder at Foster Wheeler Corp. in Dansville for 39, retiring in 1996. He also worked part-time at Expressway Auto Auction in Dansville after his retirement.
He married Lorraine (Crance) Pakkala on Nov. 28, 1981, in Dansville; they celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving of last year.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Irene Rathburn.
Fred was a member of the 25-year Club at Foster Wheeler; a member of the Dansville Hook & Ladder Co.; the Dansville Moose Club; the Western NYS Firemen's Association. He also attended the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Geneseo.
Fred enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Wednesday Night Men's League and the Sunday Night Couples League. He also bowled at the Western NYS Firemen's Tournament annually. He enjoyed golfing and playing in the Foster Wheeler Golf League at Brae Burn. He enjoyed cutting wood and the outdoors, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine; a son, Andrew (Ina) Rathburn and their children, Rebecca, Lisa, Nicole and Deidre Rathburn, all of Papillion, Neb.; two daughters, Julie McCollumn and her children, Ryan, Kelly, Adam and Jamie McCollumn, all of South Livonia, and Melissa Rathburn of Lakewood, Colo.; three step-daughters, Terrie Pakkala and her children, Michael, Nathan, Nadia, Aimee and David Haddad, all of Jamestown, Linda Pakkala of Everett, Wash., and her son, Christopher Pakkala, and Laura (Leonard) Oney and their children, Ashlee and Ryan Sullivan and Jennifer, Rebecca, Jeffrey and Catherine Oney, all of Bath; two brothers, Chester (Frieda) Rathburn of Zephyr Hills, Fla., and Benjamin J. (Sally) Rathburn of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Mary (Ronald) Mitchell of Ossian; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack and Faye Crance of Spencer and Gerald and Janet Crance of Palmetto, Fla.; three aunts and one uncle, Victoria and Glenn Levee of Dansville, Virginia Rathburn of Piffard and Genevieve Halpenny of Frostproof, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Westview Cemetery, Ossian.

MATTHEW R. GALLAGHER
DANSVILLE -- Matthew R. Gallagher, 17, of Skybrook Campground, passed away unexpectedly Friday (May 30, 2003) from injuries he received from the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Matt was born June 28, 1985 in Ft. Myers, Fla., a son of Randy and Susan (Hudson) Gallagher. He has been a resident of Dansville since 1989. Matt had helped run the family's campground and was most recently employed at Werth Construction in Dansville.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jason Paul Gallagher and an aunt, Ann Hudson-Caughy.
Some of Matt's hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, jet skiing, four wheeling, animals, playing euchre and video games with his friends and nice cars. He was in the Ski Club, on the football team and played Little League Baseball when attending Dansville Central School. The things Matt treasured most were his many friends from Dansville, the Homer/Cortland area and in Florida. They are all a close group, whom Matt touched in his own special way.
He is survived by his parents, Randy and Susan Gallagher; one brother, Cory Gallagher (Heather); one niece, Keira Gallagher; his paternal grandmother, Mary Gallagher of Dansville/Naples, Fla.; his maternal grandparents, Harry and Frances Hudson of Homer; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland.

DR. RICHARD K. ROWE
MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Dr. Richard K. Rowe, 66, a retired physician, died Thursday (May 15, 2003) in Melbourne, Fla.
He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Rowe of Hornell. Richard was a 1954 graduate of Hornell High School.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; a son; three daughters; three grandchildren; and a sister, Margie Rowe Gresens of Peachtree City, Ga.
A private service was held on May 20 at the family residence.
ADELL G. JEFFERDS
ALFRED STATION -- Adell G. Jefferds, 89, of 545 Main St., passed away Friday (May 30, 2003) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
Born in Savona, Sept. 22, 1913, a daughter of Frederick and Fern Brooks Goodsell, she had resided the majority of her life in the Alfred Station area.
She was a graduate of Savona High School, class of 1931, and had been employed as a cook for the Tau Delta Phi Fraternity in Alfred.
Adell was a member of the UIS in Alfred Station, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Alfred Station Fire Dept., an EMT with the Alfred Ambulance, a member of the Canacadea-McArthur Chapter #242 Order of Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1956. She had served as secretary of the chapter for several years, and in 1971, she served as Deputy Grand Matron for the Allegany District, Order of Eastern Star. She had been an election inspector and committee person for the Republican party, a member of the PTA of the Alfred-Almond Central School, a member of the Advisory Board of the Hornell Corp. of the Salvation Army. She will be remembered for her cookie baking and was a "Mother" to all the neighborhood children.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce Jefferds in 1983; her daughter, Judy Torres in 1969; her sister, Winifred Davis; and a brother, William Goodsell.
Surviving are one daughter, Joann (Richard) Coon of Rochester; five sons, Robert (Margaret) Jefferds of Cuba, Donald (Margaret) Jefferds of Almond, Gary Jefferds of Almond, Bruce (Abby) Jefferds of Belmont and Norman Jefferds of Alfred Station; two sisters, Julia Stocking of Painted Post and Dorothy Campbell of Elmira; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

DALE L. HENDEE
FREMONT -- Dale L. Hendee, 63, of the Town of Wheatfield, formerly of Hornell, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at his residence in Wheatfield, after a short illness.
He was born in Hornell on Jan. 2, 1940, to Willard and Pauline (Sick) Hendee. He was employed as an iron worker until his retirement in 1997. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1957-1961, at which time he received the Good Conduct Medal. He was an avid outdoorsman, and especially enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include four children, John Hendee of Hornell, William (Melanie) Hendee of Wheatfield, Virginia Hendee of Levittown, Pa., and Brenden (Shalimar) Hendee of North Hollywood, Calif.; one sister, Jean (Bob) Weaver of Arvada, Colo.; four grandchildren, Rachel and Sarah Hendee, both of Wheatfield; and Shianne and Hanna Hendee, both of North Hollywood, Calif.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Michelle Hendee; his parents; and two brothers, Clark and Jimmy Hendee.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Fremont Town Hall in Fremont. There will be no prior visitation.

BATH -- Penny A. Merrills, 57, of 51 Green Acres Court, passed away Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital.
Born in Pensacola, Fla., Nov. 4, 1945, she was the daughter of George W. and Harriett Stoner Turner. Penny was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1963. She had resided in Hornell and Canisteo, before moving to Bath in 1984. She had been employed as a receptionist for the Doctors Office of Nasar Chaudhry and M. Tariq Randhawa for several years, prior to her retirement in 2001.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Merrills, whom she married Nov. 28, 1983; two daughters, Victoria (Anthony) Fucci of Hornell and Charlene (Ronald) Boyce of Rochester; one brother, Monty (Sharon) Turner of Canisteo; four grandchildren, Adam and Morgan Boyce, and Dominic and Olivia Fucci; also nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours or services. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Scottsburg Cemetery.

WESLEY MOORE
DANSVILLE -- Wesley Moore, 93, of Franklin Street, Dansville, passed away Sunday evening (Dec. 1, 2002) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
He was born in the Town of Grove on Sept. 14, 1909, a son of the late Augustus Winters and Mary Elizabeth White Moore. On June 26, 1930, he was married to Onalee Milliman, who predeceased him on March 4, 1994. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Lester and Walter Moore and Neva Campbell.
He is survived by a son, Robert (Sandra Wheaton) Moore of Cohocton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville, with the Rev. David Hotchkiss officiating. Interment
was in Westview Cemetery, Ossian.

MARGARET OWENS
HORNELL - Margaret "Peg" Owens, 84, formerly of Belle Haven Road, entered into rest peacefully Sunday morning (May 18, 2003) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell, where she had resided since 1998.
Margaret was born Aug. 3, 1918, in West Valley to Frank and Clara Facklam Jaster. She married Kenneth L. Owens on May 3, 1946, in West Valley, who survives. She was predeceased by three sisters, Lela Lenz, Evelyn Weigartz and Violet McLaughlin; and four brothers, Lloyd, Harold, Bernard and Leonard Jaster.
She had lived on the Crosby Creek Road, Hornell, from 1950 until 1984 when she and her husband moved to Belle Haven.
Margaret had worked in the Hornell High School cafeteria for many years. She was a graduate of the West Valley High School. She was a member of the Ivanhoe Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Hornell and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Hornell, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Ladies Group #4. Margaret was active with the Campfire Girls in Hornell and also a Cub Scout Den Mother.
In addition to her husband, Ken, to whom she had been married for 57 years, she is survived by one son, Bradley Owens of Missoula, Mont.; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary (John) Gray of Hornell; grandchildren, Kelly, Brett and Brianne Gray; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where an Order of Eastern Star service will be held at 8:45 p.m. Friends are invited to join the family for funeral and committal services to be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 81 Elm St., Hornell, with the Rev. DAVID E. PETERS
HOWARD - David E. Peters, 51, of Nicholson Road, entered into rest Saturday (May 17, 2003) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.
David was born Nov. 2, 1951, in New Tripoli, Pa., to Emory and Helen Peter Peters. His father predeceased him in January of 1998.
He was a graduate of Northwestern High School, class of 1969, moving to the Howard area in 1980. He had been a self-employed carpenter and then became a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service out of Canisteo for the last 10 years. David enjoyed the outdoors and traveling the country, particularly the western states.
David is survived by his mother, Helen Peters of Howard; three sisters, Carol (Jim) Poust of Savona, Darlene (Keith) Duke of Treichlers, Pa., and Sharon (Rick) Seratt of Avoca; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Daniel Pickering officiating.
