ROSEMARY M. "RO" DANAHER
HORNELL - Rosemary M. "Ro" Danaher, 87, of 72 Jane St., passed away Friday afternoon (July 11, 2003) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell, where she had been a patient for the past five days.
Born in Hornell on July 28, 1915, she was a daughter of the late John and Josephine (DiBarbieri) Mattie. She was married to William A. Danaher, who predeceased her on Aug. 23, 1985, after 43 years of marriage.
A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Rosemary was a graduate of St. Ann's School and Hornell High School, Class of 1934.
She was employed by the War Department and also assisted in the operation of the family owned business, the former Mattie's Soda & Lunch in Hornell. She was also employed as a secretary for St. James School of Nursing and retired in 1979 as a secretary in the registrar's office at SUNY at Alfred.
Rosemary was a communicant of St. Ann's Church, a member of the Ladies of Columbus, a member of St. James Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and also served as a volunteer at the Aquinas Gift Shop at the hospital, a member of the Italian-American Womens Club of the Carducci Lodge, Sons of Italy and a member of the National Secretary Association.
She enjoyed cooking, shopping, going to lunch and spending time with her family and friends.
Her family includes her two daughters, Joanne (Dr. Gary) Chaison of Worcester, Mass., and Kathleen (Leonard) Caruso of Hornell; her son, James (Patricia) Danaher of Amity Lake; her three grandchildren, Kristen Caruso of Boston, Mass., Jeffrey (Carly) Danaher of Little Genesee, and Jason Danaher of Frankfort, Ky.; her great-grandson, Riley Danaher; her two sisters, Yolanda Fiordo and Anita Shick, both of Hornell; also her nieces, nephews, cousins, and her best friend, Grace Eagan.
Besides her parents and husband, Rosemary was predeceased by her two brothers, Joseph Mattie, who was killed in action in 1944 during World War II and John Mattie in 1988; and her three sisters, Angelica Mattie in 1997, Teresa Haynes in 2000 and Marguerite Mattie in 2001.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

DONALD J. LAW
AVOCA - Donald J. Law, 71, died late Friday evening (July 11, 2003) at his home at 5321 County Route 8, after a long illness.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Donald served with the U.S. Army from 1951-53. He had resided in Avoca since 1963, and was employed for 17 years by Schulers Farms and for 11 years by the Gunlocke Company, Inc. in Wayland.
On Nov. 3, 1953, he was married in Sparta, N.C., to the former Nancy Jesmer, who survives.
His family also includes his two daughters, Edith Plummer and Donna (Ted) Hershberger; two sons, Raymond Law and Carl Law; his eight grandchildren and one-great grandchild; his sister, Shirley (Hubert) McCartin of Adams Center; his three brothers, Lawrence (Evelyn) Law of Osmond, Fla., Percy (Maxine) Law of Fine and Guy (Jean) Law of Edwards; also, his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and several brothers and sisters, Donald was predeceased by his grandson, Rick Seager, in 1998.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Avoca Assembly of God Church, 11 Griswold St., Avoca, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Samuel Stetter will officiate. Committal services and interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

SISTER MARY COLETTE FRANK
ROCHESTER - Sister Mary Colette Frank died Friday (July 11, 2003). She is survived by nieces, nephews and the Sisters of Mercy.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday and 2-5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse, 1437 Blossom Road, Rochester. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Her funeral Mass will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Motherhouse Chapel with her nephew, the Rev. Edward Frank of Augusta, Ga., as presider. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Holy Sepulchure Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse.

EMERSON LANPHERE
FRIENDSHIP - C. Emerson Lanphere, 91, of 16 Queen Ann St., died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at WCA Hospital in Jamestown following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 20, 1911 in Jamestown, he was the son of John W. and Anna C. (Chandler) Lanphere. On Aug. 9, 1936 in Westfield, he married the former Doris C. Engberg, who survives.
Mr. Lanphere had attended the Jamestown rural district schools and for several years was manager of Loblaws Grocery Store in Jamestown. Moving to Friendship with his family in 1953, he sold Electrolux Cleaners for many years. Later he became owner-operator of a new business named Ideal Motor Sales operating the business for 40 years, up to the present time. Also, he was a bus driver for Friendship Central School for several years.
He was an avid baseball fan and loved his family.
He was a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church and was a 40+ year member of the Friendship Rotary Club. He had served faithfully in the Club and held perfect attendance for 34 years. Also, he was a two-time recipient of the Paul Harris Award and had held all the offices of the club over the years. He was the oldest and most current member to date.
Surviving are a son, Gordon E. (Bridgette) Lanphere of Hammondsport; three daughters, Marian L. (Glenn "Bill") Clark of Friendship, Margaret A. (Ford) Easton of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Martha J. (James) Burdick of Fredonia; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son-in-law, William A. McQueen; six brothers, Theodore Lanphere, Frank Lanphere, John Lanphere, James Lanphere, Stewart Lanphere, and Elmer Lanphere; four sisters, Leah Nichols, Carolyn Carpenter, Gladys Lanphere and Vivian Walsh.
Friends may call at the Treusdell Funeral Home in Friendship from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday from noon-1 p.m. at the Friendship United Methodist Church at which time services will be held (1 p.m.). The Rev. Robert Schooley, pastor and the Rev. Cornelius C. DeGroat of Spencerport will officiate.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Social Services Foundation, 715 Falconer St., Jamestown, N.Y. 14701.

NELSON BERT KINNEY
CANISTEO - Nelson Bert Kinney, 87, of Greenwood Street, entered into rest peacefully at his home Wednesday (July 16, 2003) with the love and care of his wife by his side.
Bert was born Dec. 8, 1915 in Campbell, the son of Thaddeus and Leona Faulkerson Kinney. He married Eva M. George on Dec. 9, 1939 in Kirkwood.
He was predeceased by a brother, Asabel Kinney and a sister, Lola Dauch.
Bert was a trainman and conductor for the Erie, Erie/Lackawana railroad for 40 years, was a member of
the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo where he had served as a deacon and trustee. Bert was not only a conductor on the railroad but a man of many talents. Being blessed with a great mind to figure things out and hands that could make his thoughts become a reality. From carpentry to masonry and even painting pictures, his works of art are evident throughout his home and surroundings.
In addition to his wife of nearly 64 years, Eva M. Kinney of Canisteo, he is survived by three sons, Thomas Kinney of Hawaii, Edward (Thera) Kinney of Dalton, Ga., and Dr. Bruce Kinney of Kent, Ohio; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at a later date to be announced.
Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, N.Y. 14830.

TABATHA MARIE (BASSETT) BRYANT
PENFIELD/GREENWOOD - Tabatha Marie (Bassett) Bryant, 26, died unexpectedly at her home in Penfield, Monday (July 14, 2003).
Tabatha was born Oct. 8, 1976 in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, the daughter of Virginia Hentges and Carroll Leroy Bassett. She married Kevin C. Bryant on Dec. 26, 1997 in Fairport.
She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Rev. Carol Bassett; her maternal grandmother, Clara Hentges; and brother, Chris Winebrenner.
Tabatha was employed at M&T Bank and was also a legal assistant at her husband's law office in Greece. She was a graduate of Greenwood Central School, class of 1994, and a member of the Community of Christ in Pittsford where she loved to sing and was often asked to be a soloist at her church.
Survivors include her husband, Kevin C. Bryant and her two sons, Kevin C. "KC" Bryant II and Steven B. Bryant, all of Penfield; her mother, Virginia (Cleo) Winebrenner of Iowa; father, Carroll Leroy (Becky) Bassett of Titusville, Fla.; one sister, Samantha Bassett of Jasper; brother, Cyril Winebrenner of Rochester; five step sisters; paternal grandmother, Essie Bassett of Canisteo; maternal grandfather, Cyril Hentges of Montana; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo. A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Community of Christ in Greenwood with the Rev. Michael Allen officiating.
Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood.

LARRY THOMAS LEMEN
ARKPORT - Larry Thomas Lemen, 59, of State Route 36, passed away early Wednesday morning (July 16, 2003) at home, following a long illness.
He was born in Dansville, on Sept. 1, 1943, a son of the late Tom Charles and Martha Rose (Holden) Lemen. On June 28, 1963, he was married to the former Jean Hadley, who survives.
Larry was employed as an engineer and foreman at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell for the past 14 years. He was a former employee at Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. in Dansville and Auckland Farms of Arkport.
Larry enjoyed coin collecting, working in the garden and spending time with his wife, Jean and his children and grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his dear wife, Jean are: his son, Jeffrey (Cindi) Lemen of Arkport; two daughters, Joni Jean (Jeffery) Lobdell of Dearborn, Mich., and Jeni Lynn Cook of Burns; two brothers, Richard (Marilyn) Lemen of Dansville and Lewis (Lillian) Lemen of Groveland; a sister, Anita (Wilbur) Burger of South Dansville; five grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today from 7-9 p.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville, where services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Fox officiating.
Following cremation, internment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery, South Dansville.

ROBERT JOHN STRUBLE, JR.
HOUSTON/WEST ALMOND - Robert John Struble, Jr. passed away Dec. 19, 2002.
He was born Feb. 19, 1934.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Ave., Angelica.

MAURICE D. "MAURIE" GILBERT
GARWOODS/DANSVILLE - Maurice D. "Maurie" Gilbert, 66, of County Route 15 A in Garwoods, passed away early Sunday morning (July 20, 2003) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a short illness.
He was born in Wayland on July 18, 1937, a son of the late Richard and Wanita Sawdey Gilbert. On March 2, 1957, he was married to Janet Lanphier Gilbert, who survives. He was also predeceased by a sister, Joanne Henderson.
Maurie was a hospital equipment designer at Castle/Sybron in Rochester for over 30 years, retiring in 1998. He had also worked at Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. in Dansville for several years.
He was a member and trustee at the Garwoods United Methodist Church. Maurie was a past member and trustee at the Dansville Presbyterian Church and an active participant with Pack 41 and Troop 40 of the Cub and Boy Scouts at church. He was the 2nd vice president at the King's Daughters and Son's Home of Dansville. He was also a member of the Dansville Fish and Game Club and a former member of the Fearless Hook and Ladder Company of the Dansville Volunteer Fire Department. Maurie's true joys came from spending time with his dear wife, Janet; his children and grandchildren; hunting and camping.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Janet, are four sons, Duane Gilbert of Dunkirk, David Gilbert, Dennis Gilbert, both of Dansville; and Darryl (Kathleen) Gilbert of Pittsboro, N.C.; a niece, Dawn (Duane) Quanz of Wayland; his mother-in-law, Aileen Lanphier of Dansville; a sister, Sharon Huss of Wayland; a half-brother, Donald (Marion) Harvey of Scottsburg; four grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Nicholas and Rebecca Gilbert; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may call today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville. A memorial service will be held at the Garwoods United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Gary Wickard and Betty Holden officiating.

JOYCE A. AMES
WAYLAND - Joyce A. Ames, 60, of County Line Road, Wayland, passed away peacefully at her home, Saturday morning (July 19, 2003).
Joyce was born June 17, 1943, in Wayland, the daughter of Bert and Frances (Englert) Gilman. She resided her entire life in the Wayland area. Joyce and Clayton Ames entered into a loving marriage, April 11, 1969, at the Wayland United Methodist Church.
Joyce attended and graduated from Wayland Central School. Joyce's collegiate career included time spent at SUNY Geneseo and Nazareth College. It was at Nazareth that Joyce graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in art education. Joyce spent time at a number of different local schools including Wayland-Cohocton, Dansville Central School and St. Joseph's School, utilizing her degree. Joyce was also employed at different times by Pamela's Florist in Wayland, Swackhamers in Hornell, and Pappas Florist in Dansville.
Over the years, Joyce was very active in the Summer Park Programs, Vince Lombardi Football, and the Cinderella Softball League. Many girls in the local community learned how to play softball because of Joyce. Joyce was also known to make beautiful wedding cakes. When it came to the cakes, she always had a special touch.
Joyce was predeceased by both of her parents, Bert and Frances (Englert) Gilman.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Clayton Ames of Wayland; her son, Jeff Ames of Kentucky; her two daughters, Lynne Ames of Brooklyn and Jodie Ames of Wayland; four grandchildren; her two sisters, Jean Seward of Dansville and Judy (Edward) Perkowski of Wayland; two brothers, James (Barbara) Gilman of New York City and Jack (Pamela) Gilman of Wayland; along with several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Joyce will be held at the convenience of the family. Joyce's funeral arrangements have been completed with the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland.

PAUL E. BLACK
DANSVILLE - Paul E. Black, 82, of Mark's Trailer Court in Dansville, passed away Saturday afternoon (July 19, 2003) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, after a short illness.
He was born in New Kensington, Pa., on Nov. 8, 1920, a son of the late Paul and Ann Moore Black. On Aug. 17, 1946, he was married to Ruth Jackman Black, who survives.
Paul was a welder at Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. of Dansville, where he was a member and former vice president of the IAM Local #1665 and the Twenty Five Year Club.
He was a member of the Dansville United Methodist Church, the Daniel Goho Post #87 of the American Legion, and the former Foster Wheeler Men's Bowling League. He was a US Army WWII veteran, serving with the 121st Field Artillery Battalion.
Surviving in addition to his dear wife, Ruth, are a son, Ronald Black of Dansville; a daughter, Rosalie Nickerson of Mt. Morris; six grandchildren, Greg, Michael and Jennifer Geraci of Mt. Morris; and Debbie (Ben) Taft, Rebecca and Timothy Black, all of Dansville; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Joshua and Noah Geraci; Colin Bill and Zoe Taft; a sister, Kathryn Ryser of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Viola) Jackman of Dansville; a niece, Norma Ebert; and a nephew, Richard (Susan) Jackman.
There will be no prior calling hours. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Union Cemetery, Scottsburg. Interment with full military honors will be in Union Cemetery, Scottsburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dansville United Methodist Church, 5 Chestnut Ave., Dansville, N.Y. 14437.

ANNA M. SCHUTZ
WALLACE - Anna M. Schutz, 87, formerly of Wallace, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) after a brief illness, at Three Rivers of Painted Post. Prior to her illness, she was a resident at Green Meadows in Painted Post.
She was born on Aug. 24, 1915, in North Carolina, to Charles Swede and Emma Keener Swede. At age three, she and her family moved to the Bath area. She graduated from Bath High School in 1934. She married Eugene Schutz, and for many years they had a trucking and lime spreading business in Wallace. Gene predeceased her in 1977.
Surviving are her children, Delbert (Laura) Schutz of Bath, Kay Fox of Wallace and Gloria (Jerry) Cole of Napa, Calif.; also her sister-in-law, Neva Crabtree of Wheeler. She leaves seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Debbie Finch; and a son-in-law, William "Pete" Fox.
She was a member of the Eastern Star Twilight Chapter No. 360 in Avoca.
Calling hours are from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday at the Avoca Funeral Home (formerly Bond-Davis & Bishop Funeral Home), 22 N. Main St., Avoca, where funeral and committal services will be held following calling hours at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Daniel Pickering officiating. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in Anna's memory to the Wallace Volunteer Fire Department.

MARY D. PAPPALARDO
HORNELL - Mary D. Pappalardo, 64, of 1190 Webbs Crossing Rd., Hornell, died Monday (July 21, 2003) at the Maefair Health Care Center in Trumbull, Conn., following a long illness.
Born in Kane, Pa., on April 1, 1939, she was the daughter of Frank and Helen (Goodyear) Barry. She resided most of her life in the Hornell area.
Mary was employed for over 20 years at the SUNY College of Technology at Alfred, retiring in August of last year. She served in various capacities throughout her career, starting in the Agriculture & Horticulture Department in 1979. She also held key positions in the Financial Aid, Business Technologies and Engineering Technologies Departments. Until her retirement, she spent the last seven years as the Agency Program Aide in the Records Office. She was an active member of the AIDS Awareness Program, where she would often speak to groups of all ages about HIV and AIDS.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Francis "Frank" Pappalardo and Thomas Pappalardo.
Surviving are her son, Fred (Karel) Pappalardo of Monroe, Conn.; her daughter, Jo Ann Pappalardo-Moore of Flourtown, Pa.; two brothers, Thomas (Virginia) Barry of Columbus, Ohio, and William (Janice) Barry of Merrimack, N.H.; two sisters, Kay (William) Hillman of Greece and Shirley (James) Kockler of Tionesta, Pa.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family of Mary D. Pappalardo will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours Thursday at 11 a.m., with Deacon Robert McCormick and Rev. Wayne Wager officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Mary's family requests that memorial contributions in her name be made to the American Cancer Society, 1400 Winton Road North, Rochester, N.Y. 14609. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

SHERRI D. (ACKER) DIETRICH
ALFRED - Sherri D. Dietrich, 40, of Pine Hill Drive, entered into rest unexpectedly Monday (July 21, 2003) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Sherri was born Sept. 23, 1962, in Hornell, the daughter of Rita Erway Acker and Harley Acker. She married John Dietrich, Feb. 14, 1994, in Rochester.
Sherri was a graduate of Jasper Central School, class of 1980; and a graduate of Alfred State College, with a degree in food services. She had been a waitress at the Filling Station Pub & Grille Restaurant in Canisteo; and was a member of the Canisteo American Legion Women's Auxiliary. A devoted and loving wife and mother, Sherri will always be remembered for her love of music and being particularly fond of Rock & Roll.
Sherri is survived by her husband, John Dietrich of Alfred; her three daughters, Amanda, Danee and Catherine Dietrich, all of Alfred; her mother, Rita Acker of Canisteo; father, Harley (Diane) Acker of East Bethany; one sister and brother-in-law, Terri (Daniel) Sills of Canisteo; one brother, Ronald Acker of San Francisco, Calif.; two step-brothers, Brandon Acker of East Bethany and Robert Acker of Perry; aunts, uncles and several cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where a celebration of Sherri's life will be held Thursday at 11 a.m.

DARRYL R. MacTAVISH
WELLSVILLE - Darryl R. MacTavish, 60, of 3141 Wightman Rd., died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at his home, with his wife and son by his side.
He was born Dec. 11, 1942, in Washington, D.C., the son of R. Drexel and Winifred (Healy) MacTavish. In Whitesville, on Sept. 3, 1966, he married Candace "Candy" House, who survives.
Darryl graduated from Wellsville High School in 1961. He was employed by the Outdoor Store, Weldonian Dairy, and L.C. Whitford Co. in Wellsville. He also worked at the water department of the Village of Wellsville for 35 years. He retired as water maintenance supervisor due to poor health in 2002. He was a member of the Wellsville Lodge #230 F & AM and the Immaculate Conception Church of Wellsville.
Surviving besides his wife are one son, David R. MacTavish of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Heather MacTavish in 1999.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, Wellsville; Rev. Dennis Wolf will be celebrant. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.
Suggested donations include Immaculate Conception School and Home Care & Hospice.

JOSEPH A. "JOE" GRILLO
HORNELL - Joseph A. "Joe" Grillo, 73, of 49 John St., Hornell, died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning (July 22, 2003) at his home.
A native and life resident of Hornell, he was born Jan. 31, 1930, and was the son of Andrew and Mary (Losecco) Grillo.
Joe was a graduate of St. Ann's School and Hornell High School. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the medical corp. of the U.S. Army.
He was employed for about 45 years at Stern & Stern Textile Corporation, and had served in several capacities including weaver, chemist and colorist of the dye room; and later worked in management as a supervisor of the shipping and finishing departments.
Joe was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and was a member of the Hornell Association. He was a former member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus, Sons of Italy, Moose Lodge and American Legion.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed writing poetry and short stories. He also enjoyed spending countless hours communicating with family and friends on his computer.
Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Nick Grillo; and four sisters, Rose Oliver, Josephine Armeli, Nina Muzyka and Ann Dake.
He was married on Jan. 31, 1951, to the former Marilyn McClary, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Michael Grillo of Hornell; two daughters, Debbie (Jim) Fahl of Hornell and Mary (Steve) Westfall of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Bertha Grillo of Hornell and Lucy Cole of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Eric Grillo, Jessica (Eric) Shellenberger and Brian (Andrea) Fahl; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family of Joseph A. "Joe" Grillo will receive friends on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, with burial in St. Ann's Cemetery.
Joe's family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Ann's School, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

ALEX J. BROWN
WELLSVILLE/REXVILLE - Alex J. Brown, 98, formerly of Rexville, entered into rest Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at Highland Health Care Center in Wellsville, where he had resided since 1999.
Alex was born Sept. 6, 1904, in Greenwood, the son of Alexander and Jennie Thompson Brown. He married Mary Rita Kieff on June 20, 1932, in Rexville, who predeceased him in April of 1993. He was also predeceased by a son, Paul Joseph Brown; a daughter, Anna Marie Streeter; grandson, Sean Greaney; great-grandsons, Darin James and David Max Hoyt; two brothers, Fred and Ivan Brown; two sisters, Catherine Chandler and Frances Gardner; and two sons-in-law, Lyle Drake and William O'Rourke.
Alex was a life long resident and dairy farmer of the Rexville area, and had also served as Greenwood Town Highway Superintendent for 12 years. He was a member of the Greenwood Senior Citizens and the Greenwood Grange.
He is survived by seven daughters, Jennie (Darold) Coddington of Fredonia, Mary Drake of Canisteo, Louise (James) Ahearn of Rexville, Betty (Ralph) Empson of Andover, Peggy O'Rourke of Hornell, Alexis (Ned) Cole of Mendon, Mass., and Rosetta (Douglas) Greaney of Hornell; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rexville. Burial will be in St. Mary's Church Yard Cemetery, Rexville.

MILDRED E. WHEATON
WEIRTON, W. Va. - Mildred E. Wheaton, 84, of Weirton, W. Va., passed away Monday (July 21, 2003) at her home.
She was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Wayland. Preceding her in death were her parents, Charles and Susie Inscho; and children, David Wheaton and Mary Palmer.
Surviving are her children, Patricia Washburn of Lima; Anice Cragg (Larry Flickner) of Dansville, Martha (Bruce) West of Chili, Louis (Jackie) Wheaton of Wayland and Diane Bremiller (Jim Merten) of Weirton, W. Va.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
No services will being held.

PHYLLIS C. WASHBURN
ALMOND - Phyllis C. Washburn, 87, of 3 Canacadea St., passed away peacefully Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at her home.
She was born July 28, 1915, in Almond, the daughter of Claude M. and Mamie Perham Ferry. She was married Oct. 17, 1936, to Guy A. Washburn Sr., who died in 1996. She was also predeceased by a son, Roger Washburn; and two sisters, Jeanetta Markel and Florence Erskine.
Phyllis was a graduate of the former Almond High School and Hornell Business School. She was an office clerk for JCPenney Co., Hornell, for 20 years, retiring in 1972.
She was a long time member of Almond Union of Churches, Almond Historical Society and Almond Grange. She enjoyed Senior Citizens luncheons.
Phyllis had been comfortable at home with her constant companion, a little dog named "Parsley."
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Leo) Hulse, Almond; and Pamela (Jack Hatter) Brutsman, Wolcott; four sons, Donald (Sandra) Washburn, Richard (Suzanne) Washburn, Guy (Jeanne) Washburn Jr., and Philip (Betty) Washburn, all of Almond; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends, including long time, good neighbor, Lonnie France.
The family will receive friends Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Michael Childs officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond.
Memorial contributions may be made to Almond Union of Churches or to the Almond Ambulance Fund, Almond, N.Y. 14804.

JOHN E. McKINLEY
ROCHESTER - John E. McKinley, 64, passed away Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at his home in Chili.
He was born Sept. 27, 1938, in Hornell, where he was raised. He was a member of Chili American Legion Post #1830.
He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Mary McKinley; brothers, Joseph and James McKinley.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marge; children, Lori McKinley, Jenny (Chuck) Hoehn, John P. McKinley; brothers, Thomas (Mary) and Michael McKinley; sisters, Sheila McKinley and Mary Ann (Kurt) Hoyer; sister-in-law, Anne McKinley; grandchildren, Daniel, Hayley and Jason Hoehn; nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the James R. Gray Funeral Home, 1530 Buffalo Rd., Rochester. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 3000 Chili Ave., Rochester. Interment will be on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Andover.

JESSIE B. THOMPSON
AVOCA/HORNELL - Jessie B. Thompson, 99, of 479 Canisteo St., Hornell, formerly of Avoca, died Sunday (May 18, 2003).
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the First Baptist Church in Avoca, with the Rev. William McFeaters officiating. Burial will be in Clearview Cemetery, North Cohocton.
Arrangements are by the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home of Hornell.

RUTH TANNER MORRIS
WILLIAMSVILLE - Ruth Tanner Morris passed away after a brief illness on Saturday (July 19, 2003) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Williamsville.
Born in Hornell, in 1914, she distinguished herself early in her educational pursuits graduating from Hornell High School in 1931, after leading the high school debate team to the New York State Championship. Awarded a scholarship to Elmira College, she received her B.A. degree in 1935. While still an undergraduate at Elmira, her essay entitled "Why Young People Should Be Involved In Politics" was published by The New York Times. The essay attracted enough attention to lead to numerous job offers upon graduation including one as a correspondent with The New York Herald. Dedicated to learning and helping others, she remained in upstate New York and later earned her M.Ed. from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Ruth taught for 18 years at Amherst Central High School after having taught in Cohocton, Dansville and Webster. While at Amherst, she inaugurated programs in remedial reading and critical thinking which received statewide attention. In addition to her school year accomplishments, she also taught summer reading programs at Vassar College and Temple University. She was a respected member of numerous professional organizations including Pi Lambda Theta, the Society of Educational Administrators, the National Education Association and the New York State Retired Teacher's Association, among others. An accomplished writer, she had a number of articles and essays published in various publications including The Saturday Evening Post. Well into retirement, she continued to contribute her time to those less fortunate by tutoring the learning disabled. At the age of 88, she enjoyed the respect of countless grateful students who benefited from her love of learning and teaching.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved son, Lewis; her brother, Dr. Charles J. Tanner of West Seneca; and her sister, Beatrice Clark Grupe of Lockport.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, L. Donald Morris; sons, Robert (Carol) of New York City and William (Elizabeth) of London, England; daughter, Maryruth Morris Vohwinkel (Kenneth); and four grandchildren.
The family will be present to receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree St. (Route 15), Livonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Saints Peter & Paul Church, 5541 Main St., Williamsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 14 Washington St., Livonia.
Scholarship donations may be made in her memory to Elmira College Scholarship Fund, Elmira College, One Park Place, Elmira, N.Y. 14901.

VIRGINIA L. PFLAGER "GINGER" COVILL
Virginia L. Pflager "Ginger" Covill, 73, of Crystal Beach Road, Hammondsport, Keuka Lake passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Ginger was born Oct. 21, 1929 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Laurence and Sweetheart (Wroten) Pflager.
She married her husband, Grant Covill on Apr. 15, 1950.
Her surviving family includes her husband, Grant of Keuka Lake; Daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Marshall Young of Spencerport; Grandson, W. Blakeney Hedrick attending MCSU, NROTC in Raleigh, N.C.; Sister and brother-in-law, Rachael Anne and Richard Bellows of Waterloo; Three nieces, and several grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Having graduated from Wellsville High school, Ginger earned her LPN and worked most of her life in various phases of the medical field.
Ginger was a Girl Scout Leader for 17 years and Camp Director for 4 years in Wellsville. A 50-year member of the Eastern Star, She was also past matron of Burton Chapter O.E.S.
Ginger was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and active in St. Ann's Guild, Choir and Sunday School there until moving to Pennsylvania in 1972. After retiring in 1986, she and her husband moved back to their home on Keuka Lake.
Ginger was an active member of the Sampson WWII Navy Veterans Auxiliary and president from 1997 through 1999. She was also a member of the Keukauna Women's Club and served as president from 1999-2002.
Family and friends are invited to attend her memorial service to take place Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003 at 11 a.m. in The Chapel located within the Bath VA Medical Center, Veterans Ave. Bath. As Ginger loved the lake so much, expressions of sympathy and remembrance may be directed in her memory to Keuka Lake Association P.O. Box 415 Hammondsport. N.Y. 14840. In addition memorials may also be directed to Strong Memorial Hospital Friends of Strong 601 Elmwood Ave Box 660 Rochester, N.Y. 14642 or charity of ones' choice.
