CHARLES B. RIVETT
DANSVILLE/PALM BAY, Fla. - Charles B. Rivett, 69, passed away peacefully Thursday (Aug. 7, 2003) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Charles was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Dansville, a son of Francis and Marian (Burnside) Rivett. He married Dorothy Martin on Nov. 28, 1959, in Dansville, she survives. He retired as a gunnery sergeant for the US Marine Corps., serving from 1950 to 1970. During his tours of the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts, he received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was also formerly employed at the Harris Corp. in Palm Bay, Fla., and his last place of employment was for the Florida Marlins Baseball Team, where he worked at the concession stand. He was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Rivett.
Charles was a proud member of the Palm Bay Moose Club #2311; the VFW of Palm Bay, Post #645; and the Dansville American Legion, Post #87. He was an avid bowler for 55 years and he held all of the offices of the bowling league in Palm Bay, specifically he was the secretary and treasurer for 25 years. He was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2000. He was a former coach and umpire for the Palm Bay Little League and also the Little League in Hawaii.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Dorothy; his sons, Bob (Jeanette) Rivett of Livermore, Calif., and Daniel (Joanne) Rivett of Potstown, Pa.; his granddaughter, Shannon McNamara of Livermore, Calif.; his sister, Doris (Ted) Denton of Palm Bay, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call 12-2 p.m. Saturday at the Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St., Dansville, where funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling, with Father Steve Kraus officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

HARLAN D. MORSE
CANISTEO - Harlan D. Morse, 83, of 26 Elm St., passed away Thursday (Aug. 7, 2003) at his home.
Born in Canisteo, Feb. 29, 1920, the son of John and Goldie VanZile Morse, he had resided in Canisteo all of his life. He had attended Canisteo Central School and was a US Army veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations as an amphibian boat operator. He was employed for 20 years at the former Newark Milk & Cream Company in Canisteo, and later as a truck driver for the Steuben County Highway Department, retiring in 1976.
On April 9, 1946, he married the former Alberta Carney, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Alberta of Canisteo, are two daughters, Linda (Dave) Harding of Canisteo and Brenda (Stan) Gloss of Canisteo; two sons, Randy (Bonnie) Morse of Canisteo and Bruce Morse of Seminole, Fla.; one brother, Lyle (Carol) Morse of Canisteo; long time family friend, Jim Quagliana; one aunt, Ruth Huber and family of Oregon; 10 grandchildren, Cindy (Chuck) Henry of Hornell, Marcia (Eric) Fish of Asheboro, N.C., Scott Morse of Canisteo, Kimberlee (Derek) Stock of Versailles, Ky., Brian (Cathy) Morse of Concord, N.C., Steven (Kelly) Morse of Hornell, Jeff (Jannel) Ames of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Casey Criscaden of Canisteo, Seana Gloss of Canisteo and Kathleen Gloss of Minnesota; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

WAYLAND - Helene A. Wicks, 95, passed away peacefully Saturday (Aug. 9, 2003) at the Vincent House (Comfort Care Facility) in Wayland, after a long illness.
MARY N. SWIFT
CUBA - Mary N. Swift, 68, of 13 Medbury Heights, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Friday afternoon (Aug. 8, 2003) in her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Springville on Oct. 13, 1936, she was the daughter of Edwin and Charlotte (Rogers) Nason. She attended the elementary grades at St. Aloysius School and high school at Griffith Institute both in Springville. She also graduated from the Harper Method Beauty School in Rochester.
On June 13, 1959 in Springville, she married Roger D. "Rod" Swift, who survives. Mr. Swift is currently serving as mayor of the village of Cuba.
Mrs. Swift had been employed as an operator for New York Telephone Co. and later NYNEX. She was also a waitress at Moonwink's Restaurant and the Kinney II Restaurant, both in Cuba, prior to her retirement in 1991.
She loved to spend time with her family, liked to travel and enjoyed softball. She was a fan of pro football and especially liked the Buffalo Bills and the St. Bonaventure basketball team.
Mrs. Swift was a member of Our Lady of Angels Church in Cuba and the Auxiliary of Cuba Post #2721 VFW and the Telephone Pioneers. She was also in the "Lunch with the Ladies" group.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one son, Gregory D. Swift of Cuba; one daughter, Lori A. (John Clemmer) Swift of Henderson, Nev.; one grandson, Dennis Roger Swift of Henderson, Nev.; two brothers, Norman D. (Noreen) Nason and Paul (Doris) Nason, both of Springville; two sisters, Phyllis Nason of Springville and Alice Maddigan of Colden; two sisters-in-law, Katherine "Katy" Harbeck and Alice G. Resch, both of Cuba; several nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Cindy Sweet and Alice G. Resch, both of Cuba.
Friends will be received at the McIntosh Funeral Home, 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 50 South St., Cuba (please assemble at the church). Father Jerome M. Dissek, pastor will be the Celebrant of the Mass.
Burial will be in Bellville Cemetery, Town of New Hudson.
A Scriptural Wake Service will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

MARY JANE MERICLE
HORNELL - Mary Jane Mericle, 70, of 51 Church St. Ct.., passed away Friday (Aug. 8, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital.
Born in Belmont, June 29, 1933, the daughter of Edward and Alberta (Wagner) Lewis, she was a graduate of Hornell High School and had been employed as a private duty nurse and Home Health Care Worker for several years, mostly in the Sherman, Texas area. She was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Sherman, Texas.
She was predeceased by one son, Wayne D. Mericle in 1984.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia (Ed) Villaneuva of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Daniel (Carol) Mericle of Rockville, Va. and Brian (Pam) Mericle of Colleyville, Texas; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; 10 brothers and sisters, Jean Derrick, Anita Derrick, Janice Raish, and James, Kenneth, Robert, Steven, Donald, LeRoy and Leslie Lewis, most of whom reside in the immediate area; and her step-mother, Nora Lewis of Hornell.
The family will be present to receive friends Monday from 10-11 a.m. at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, where funeral services will follow calling hours at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dudley Jenkins officiating.
Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
DOROTHY I. KAPP
COUDERSPORT, Pa. - Dorothy I. Kapp, 97, died Friday (Aug. 8, 2003) at the Long Term Care Facility of Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport, Pa.
She was born June 1, 1906 in Geneseo, the daughter of Bertrum and Dora (Roberts) Stocking. She had been married to Lewis E. Greenman, Charles Shelley, and Gerald Kapp, who all predeceased her.
Dorothy was raised in the Wellsville area and was a former resident of Burkeville, Texas, and Roulette, Pa., before moving to Coudersport.
She is survived by seven children, Lewis (Donna) Greenman, Jr. of Port Allegany, Agnes (Bernard) LaBar of Coudersport, Martha Feick of Friendship, Bert (Betty) Greenman of Shinglehouse, Edith "Dolly" (Clair) Meyer of Wellsville, Merle "Bucky" (Sandra) Greenman of Wellsville, Keith (Gloria) Shelley of Athens, Texas; 41 grandchildren; 153 great and great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her spouses, Dorothy was predeceased by one daughter, Ilah; three sons, George, Frank and Laverne; one sister, Edith Ellsworth; and two brothers, George and Frank Stocking.
Friends are invited to call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville, where the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with Rev. Ross Martin presiding.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville.

REV. MARTIN CECIL HOTCHKISS, Sr.
BLACK CREEK - Rev. Martin Cecil Hotchkiss, Sr., Ph.D., S.F.C. U.S. Army, 64, died Friday (Aug. 8, 2003).
He was born May 5, 1939 in Belfast to Cecil and Agnes (Wonner) Hotchkiss. He retired from the U.S. Army and was a minister in Pike and Black Creek.
He was predeceased by sister, Anne.
Survivors include his parents, Cecil and Agnes of Nunda; his wife, Linda of Black Creek; four sons, Martin Hotchkiss, Jr., of Rock Hill, S.C., David (Gerlinde) Hotchkiss of Germany, Dan (Tina) Hotchkiss of Black Creek, Brian (Gloria) Hotchkiss of Silver Lake; two daughters, Michelle (Michael) Merrifield of Freedom and Linda (Kinley) Frazier of Black Creek; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gary Hotchkiss and Gerald (Ellyn) Hotchkiss, both of Nunda; a sister, Roberta (William) Mallaber of Wayland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Mann Funeral Home in Nunda on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Wesleyan Church, with Rev. James Peters and Rev. Eldyn Simons officiating. A memorial service will be held Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Black Creek Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the Oakland Hill Cemetery, Town of Portage.

ELMER E. TRACY
REXVILLE - Elmer E. Tracy, 82, of Cty. Rte. #117, entered into rest Saturday (Aug. 9, 2003) at his home.
Elmer was born May 15, 1921 in Caribou, Maine, the son of George W. and Josephine (Bowles) Tracy. He married Frances M. Cooney in New Jersey, who survives.
He was predeceased by two stepsons, Ronald and James White in 1965.
Elmer served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from Jan. 1945 to March 1946. He had lived in Rexville for over 40 years and had been a crane hooker at the former foundry for the Ingersoll Rand Co. in Painted Post.
At the request of Elmer, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Churchyard Cemetery, Rexville.
Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
HERVEY D. "DUANE" COATES
GREENWOOD - Hervey D. "Duane" Coates, 68, of Main Street, entered into rest at his home Sunday (Aug. 10, 2003) with the care and love of his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Duane was born March 13, 1935, in Ulysses, Pa., the son of Delbert and Clara Quackenbush Coates. He married Sarah "Sally" Murray on Aug. 12, 1966, in Rexville, who survives. He was predeceased by one brother, Harold Coates; three sisters, Ruth Shorts, Doris Cheeseman and infant sister, Beatrice Coates.
Duane was a heavy equipment operator for the Town Highway Department in Greenwood for 38 years. In 1986, he coached the Greenwood Central High School baseball team and was a former member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who will be remembered as an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing sports, as well as watching, coaching and lending a hand.
In addition to his wife of 37 years, Sally Coates of Greenwood, he is survived by two sons, Dennis and Thomas Coates, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; twin daughters, Donna Coates of Cheektowaga and Dawn (Tim) Rexford of Webster; two grandchildren, Christopher Coates of Phoenix, Ariz., and Danielle Coates of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Ralph (Louise) Coates of Scio and Bernard (Janet) Coates of Lawrenceville, Pa.; two sisters, Myrtle (Bart) Baines of Horseheads and Betty (Ray) Pals of Effingham, Ill.

LEE K. EDMOND
COHOCTON/GASTONIA, N.C. - Lee K. Edmond, 76, currently of 633 Carolina Ave., N.C., and formerly of Cohocton, entered into eternal rest on Sunday (Aug. 10, 2003) at the home of his youngest daughter, Anne Carter. He was a beloved husband and son, a wonderful father, brother, grandfather and friend who will be forever loved and remembered.
Lee was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Cohocton, the son of the late Jesse and Genevieve (Francis) Edmond. During World War II, Lee enlisted and entered into active service in August 1944 at the age of 17. He served in the US Navy 143rd Naval Construction Battalion, Company C, Platoon 2 stationed in the Philippines. He received an honorable discharge in July 1946, having earned the Victory, American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Medals, along with the Philippines Liberation Ribbon. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Ouderkirk-Cragg Post 805. After returning home from the war, Lee graduated from Cohocton Central School. Subsequent to graduation, Lee married his high school sweetheart Amelia "Mimi" Schiavi on Nov. 23, 1946, at St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Cohocton. Together Lee and Mimi celebrated over 51 years of marriage prior to Mimi's passing away June 21, 1998. Lee and Mimi resided most of their lives in the Cohocton area. In 1980, they moved to Charlotte, N.C., where they enjoyed living for a number of years.
Lee will always be remembered as a successful entrepreneur, running Edmond Appliance and Furniture (1956-1972) and later becoming a regional dealer for Ridge Homes (1972-1984). During this time, he served as regional council member for the National Homebuilders Association, representing western New York builders. His children affectionately refer to Lee as a very successful "wheeler dealer." Additionally, he was an excellent athlete and founding member (1946) of the Cohocton Pioneers Baseball Club and was drafted to play minor league baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates Organization in 1948. However, as the father of eight active children, he took more pleasure in watching his own children participate in a variety of sports.
Lee was also very active in town government. He was a founding member and initial investor in the Cohocton Development Corp. (CDC), the organization responsible for forming the Fall Foliage theme. He was a member of the Cohocton school board for many years and served as village trustee for numerous years on the Cohocton Village Board,
Lee Edmond was also a charter member of the Cohocton Lions Club in 1954 and played an active role within this international organization. He served as District Governor for the region from 1968-1969 and represented the district at the 82nd International Convention in Tokyo, Japan (1969). To honor Lee's service in the Lions Club, there will be a pavilion constructed in the Cohocton area that will be named after him.
Lee was also a communicant of St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Cohocton, serving on the parish council as a member and president for several terms. When the family relocated to Charlotte, N.C., he was active at both St. Gabriel's and St. Peter's Catholic Churches as a building committee member and usher.
Lee was predeceased by his loving wife, Amelia "Mimi" (Schiavi) Edmond, in 1998; his son, James G. Edmond, 32 years of age in 1991; and his grandson, Kevin A. Edmond, nine years of age in 1989.
Survivors: Beloved father of sons, Daniel (Ellen Dartt) Edmond of Perkinsville, Doug (Deborah Sanford) Edmond of Nunda, Jeffrey (Leslie Sherrill) Edmond of Charlotte, N.C., John (Rita Schichler) Edmond of Cary, N.C., and Richard (Giocanda Tabash) Edmond of Charlotte, N.C.; and two daughters, Christine (Thomas) Crouch of Fenton, Mo., and Anne (Timothy) Carter of Gastonia, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Darlene Nichols Edmond of Pageland, S.C.; precious grandfather of 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; loving brother to sisters, Marlene (Jim) Graham and Bonnie (George) Reynolds; and brothers, Jesse Robert (Lois) Edmond and Richard (Sally) Edmond; cherished nephew to Mary Peasley; along with several nieces and nephews; loving brother-in-law to Anne (Bud) Stahl, Rita Steinbach and Dottie Schiavi.

MAURICE J. BELNAP
DELTONA, Fla. - Maurice J. Belnap, 56, formerly of Hornell, passed away on Friday (Aug. 1, 2003) in Orange City, Fla.
The Hornell native had been employed as detention deputy for the Seminole Co. Sheriff's Department for 13 years. He had served in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife, Charlene Belnap; one son, Jason Belnap of Atlanta, Fla.; one stepson, Jacob Miller of Indiana; one brother, Martin Belnap of Colorado.
Services and burial were in Florida.

JOHN E. BUTTERY SR.
DANSVILLE/CANISTEO - John E. Buttery Sr., 82, of 9902 Rowe Rd., passed away Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2003) in Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Born in Lewiston, June 15, 1921, a son of Frank H. and Grace Buttery, he had resided in Canisteo for about 27 years prior to moving to Dansville in 2000. He had been employed as a crane operator for the International Paper Company in North Tonawanda. He served in the US Army Air Corp. during WWII.
He was a member of the Hornell Association, a life member of the A.J. Jerrick American Legion Post in Swornsville, a member of the Canisteo American Legion, the color guard of the Legion Post and the War Dads. John enjoyed wildlife and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Robert) Hammond of Canisteo; three sons, John (Chris) Buttery of Niagara Falls, Ronald Buttery, and James (Gail) Buttery of Dansville, with whom he had made his home; three sisters and two brothers; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will be present 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday to receive friends at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo, where the Canisteo American Legion will conduct a memorial service at 8 p.m. Thursday. JOHN H. COSTELLO SR.
WELLSVILLE - John H. Costello Sr., 77, of 12 Franklin St., Wellsville, died Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2003) at Jones Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 21, 1926, in the Town of Willing, to Matthew and Daisy Jordan Costello. John was married to Dorothy Sugden, who predeceased him in 1978; and in 1984, he married Barbara Allen, who survives.
John was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific. In 1986, he retired from Dresser Rand after 41 years of service. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and life member of the VFW Post 2530, both of Wellsville. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of Serenity Hills Golf Course in Friendship.
Surviving besides his wife are four sons, John H. (Judy) Costello Jr. of Genesee, Pa., Dale Costello of Alma, Richard Costello of Williamsport, Pa., and Rodney Costello of Genesee, Pa.; three daughters, Doris Emerson of Genesee, Pa., Carol Costello of Wellsville and Donna Costello of Bradford, Pa.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Terry (Catherine) Allen of New Hampshire, Gary (Frankie) Allen of South Carolina and Larry (Deana) Allen of Georgia; two sisters, Katherine Costello of Wellsville and Barbara (Paul) Michalegko of Genesee, Pa.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sons, Jim Costello and Carl Costello; a son-in-law, Lee Emerson; and 10 brothers and sisters.

RADA M. CROMP
WEBSTER CROSSING - Rada M. Cromp, 89, passed away peacefully Monday (Aug. 11, 2003) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, after a long illness.
Rada was born July 4, 1914, in Malone, the daughter of Alfred and Effie (Hill) Marshall. She married Bernard Cromp on Oct. 24, 1930, in Chateau Gay; he predeceased her on Aug. 14, 1972. She was a homemaker and mother of five children. Rada enjoyed crocheting, knitting and gardening, but most of all she loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Rita Cromp of Webster Crossing and Donna Thomas of Perry; three sons, Dennie (Jackie) Cromp of Wayland, Carl (Andrea) Cromp and Bernard Cromp, all of Webster Crossing; 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

"Bert" Kinney, 87, of Greenwood Street, who entered into rest Wednesday (July 16, 2003) will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo, with the Rev. Todd Haines officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.

RICHARD BLOW
REXVILLE - Richard Blow, 76, of 1216 Saunders Rd., Rexville, passed away Wednesday (Aug. 13, 2003) at Steuben County Infirmary, Bath.
Born in Whitesville, Sept. 19, 1926, he was the son of Elmer and Clella (Whitman) Blow, and graduated from Whitesville Central School.
On May 4, 1964, in Prattsburgh, he married Martha Dillon, who survives.
Dick was employed with the United States Department of Agriculture as an agriculture technician in Prattsburgh, until his retirement.
Dick is survived by one son, Karl Blow of Hunt; three daughters, Dale Kazukiewicz of Corning, Sherry (Darwin Jr.) Fox of Prattsburgh and Christine Blow at home; one stepson, Donnie Race of Penn Yan; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one son, Lewis Blow; and one sister, Madiline Gilbert.
Friends will be received by the family at Howard's Funeral Home, 931 Maple Ave., Whitesville, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Glen Brubaker officiating. Interment
will follow at the Ulysses, Pa. Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society.
DORA D. HASS
HEMLOCK - Dora D. Hass, 73, of 7417 Pleasant St., Hemlock, passed away Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 12, 2003) at Thompson Memorial Hospital in Canandaigua.
Dora was born June 9, 1930, in Hemlock, the daughter of Harold and Madelene (Wemette) Trimmer. She was a life resident of the Hemlock area. Dora and Richard Hass entered into a loving marriage April 12, 1950. Together they enjoyed over 53 years of marriage. Dora's employment career included working for the Boy Scouts of American Office in Rochester, the Wemette Corp., Hass T.V., and Alger Hardware. She was a member and the organist at the Springwater Baptist Church. Dora also enjoyed spending her time singing with the Sweet Adelines.
Dora is survived by her husband, Pastor Richard Hass of Hemlock; her three sons, Mike (Vicky) Hass of Bristol, Bob (Laura) Hass of Ostervillle, Mass., and Kevin (Dawn) Hass of Canadice; seven grandchildren; her sister, Irene (Loye) Renolds of Bath; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Dora's funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. James Barlow will officiate.

CAROLYN G. BUCHINGER
CANISTEO - Carolyn G. Buchinger, 82, of 5425A State Route 36, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (Aug. 13, 2003) at her home.
Born in Hornell, Jan. 3, 1921, the daughter of Gordon and Florence Meyers Scholes, she had resided her early life in Hornell, and the past several years in Canisteo. She was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1939, and had worked at the former Foster Wheeler in Dansville, as a waitress at the Texas Café in Hornell, and several years as a bookkeeper for her husband in the operation of Don's Alignment, and Texaco Gas Station in Canisteo.
Carolyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo and the Philathia Class of the church. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canisteo American Legion Post #846, and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hornell VFW. She was also a member of RSVP.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Virgil Lockwood and Gloria Burbridge; three brothers, Wilton, Edward and Garland Scholes; and her stepson, Earl Buchinger.
Surviving are her husband, Donald Buchinger, whom she married Nov. 15, 1946; three daughters, Elaine (James) Baker of Canisteo, Patricia (John) Meyer of Canisteo and Sally Willis of Canisteo; two sons, James (Paula) Buchinger of Canisteo and Donald A. "Boochie" Buchinger of Canisteo; two stepdaughters, Harriett (William) West of Portageville and Gladys Strain of Nunda; two stepsons, Glen (Beverly) Buchinger of Oakland and Marlie (Lois) Buchinger of Oakland, N.Y.; one cousin, Marilyn Montgomery of Hornell; 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family will be present 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday to receive friends at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo, where the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canisteo American Legion Post #846 will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Curtis Corkey officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.

WALTER LEE HALBERT
DESTIN, Fla. - Walter Lee Halbert, son of Roy and Ida (Stewart) Halbert, died Friday (June 27, 2002) in Destin, Fla., after a long illness.
He is survived by his children, Dana L. (Susan) Halbert of Maryland, Dean L. and Duane L. Halbert of Alabama, Suzanne M. (Terry) Hutten, and Sally M. (David) Schimpfi of New York. He has three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Walter was a past grand master of the Southernland Lodge and a WWII veteran.
Services will be held at the graveside in Canaseraga Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. He will then be laid to rest with his first wife, Mary (Allen) Halbert. Family and friends will then gather at Stonybrook State Park for a reception.
RONALD A. CUSHMAN
CANISTEO - Ronald A. Cushman, 66, of Third Street, entered into rest at his home Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) surrounded with the love and care of his family after a long battle with colon cancer.
Ron was born May 2, 1937 in Bangor, Maine, the only son of Henry and Dorothy (Goode) Cushman.
He had achieved a Ph.D. doctorate in marketing from Temple University and has resided in the Alfred and Canisteo area since 1967 where he was Dean of Special Academic Programs at SUNY Alfred, retiring in 1992. For many years he was owner of the Planesman, which was a business of selling and trading antique tools. His passion for collecting tools took him all over the world enabling him to become the fourth largest collector of antique tools in the world. He was also vice president of the Mid Western Tool Association. Ron's interest in cars was also a part of his life and until his illness had been a car salesman at Canisteo Auto Mart.
Ron is survived by his mother, Dorothy Cushman of Bangor, Maine; one son, Douglas Cushman of Andover; two daughters, Ronda Cushman of Almond and Jill (Reid) Hubbard of Downers Grove, Ill.; two grandchildren, Jessica Cushman and Jodi Hubbard; and special and dear companion, Elaine Pratt of Canisteo.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Carl Chamberlain officiating.

BELFAST - Robert W. (Bob) Harrington, 62, a retail grocery store owner and Town Supervisor for many years, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at Strong Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
ELEANOR SCHETTINE
WELLSVILLE - Eleanor Schettine, 87, of 97 Rauber St., died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) in Ocala, Fla.
She was born June 23, 1916 in Franks, Ohio, the daughter of Aloysius and Amelia (Raufeisen) Casanova. In 1936 in Bowling Green, Ohio, she married Anthony Schettine, who predeceased her.
Eleanor is a former resident of Sandusky, Ohio and was a homemaker. She was a loving mother, grandmother and avid gardener who enjoyed cooking, canning and reading. She was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.
She is survived by three sons, John Schettine of Wellsville, Robert Schettine of Richmond, Va., and William Schettine of Ocala, Fla.; four daughters, Sylvia Vetter of Rochester, Marlene Connor of Wellsville, Carol Schettine of Richmond, Va., and Janet Coppini of Wellsville; three brothers; three sisters; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was predeceased by a son, James Schettine in 1966; one brother; and one sister.
Friends are invited to call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville. There will be a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.
Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wellsville.

HAROLD STOYLE
CANASERAGA - Harold Stoyle, 91, of 42 North Church St., died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) at the Bath VAMC.
Born in Wales, May 10, 1912, the son of Harold J. and Gwen Stoyle, he had resided in Canaseraga for the past 18 years, coming from Springwater.
Harold served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a truck driver for most of his life working for various trucking businesses.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Scott) Stoyle, who were wed on Nov. 19, 1939; one granddaughter, Deborah (James) Jeffrey of Webster; one close and special friend, Patty Cunningham of Almond; one son; four daughters; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Monday at the Bath Veterans Chapel at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at the Bath National Cemetery, Bath.

JAMES E. BALCOM
SCOTTSVILLE/DANSVILLE - James E. Balcom, 62, of Smith Road in Scottsville, passed away Saturday afternoon (Aug. 16, 2003) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.
He was born in Dansville on July 3, 1941, a son of the late Thomas Balcom and Mabel Hartman. On Sept. 26, 1959, he was married to Lois George Balcom, who survives. He was also predeceased by a son, William George Balcom.
Jim was the vice president of engineering at Applied Energy Solutions in Caledonia. He was also a US Army veteran, serving from 1959 to 1962.
Jim was a member of the I Triple E Society, and a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, nature, auctions and helping anybody that needed a hand. Jim's true love was spending time with his wife, Lois, and his children and grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his dear wife, Lois, are two daughters, Debora (Ralph) Polzella of Chelsea, Maine, and Jacinda (Gary) Baker of Friendship; and a son, Marvin K. (Christine Bloye) James of Friendship; three grandchildren, James R. (Elizabeth Grimes) Balcom, William and Rebecca Polzella.
Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville. Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Scottsburg United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Hotchkiss officiating. Interment

COHOCTON - Paul "Rooster" Vincent Carey, born on Feb. 8, 1926, in Scranton, Pa., the son of James and Mary Cosgriff Carey, passed away peacefully on Sunday (Aug. 17, 2003) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
A long time resident of Cohocton, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Ochs Carey; sons, Tom (Michaela) Carey, Tim (Rhonda) Carey, daughter, Nancy (John) Bennett of Cohocton; and son, Bill (Mila) Carey of Richmond, Calif.; grandchildren, Kala and Matt Carey; Katrina, Dylan and Krista Carey; John and Jessica Bennett; and Mark and Ethan Carey; brother-in-law, Kent (Kathy) Ochs, California; sister-in-law, Ann Carey, Cohocton; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Carey, Florida; sister-in-law, Judy Ochs Chelini, Nevada; sister-in-law, Marilyn Ochs, Owego; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beagle, Greta; and cat, Stripes. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Jim and Dick Carey; and brother-in-law, Reid Ochs.
Paul retired from the Bath VA Center in 1986 and continued to work for many years at Carey's Grocery, the store that he co-founded with Tim Carey in 1974. He was a Korean War veteran, a member of the Cohocton American Legion, Cohocton Volunteer Fire Department, and served as Village Trustee. Paul and family enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States and abroad.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Paul V. Carey to the Steuben County Office of the Aging, 3 East Pulteney Square, Bath, N.Y. 14810, to support their efforts to continue the operation of the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
In the Irish tradition, Paul's family will be receiving friends and relatives on Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 6-9 p.m. at Sturmer Hall, Maple Ave., Cohocton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Paul at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Cohocton. Rev. Steven Kraus will celebrate the mass. Interment
