BESSIE R. LANDER
SOUTH DANSVILLE - Bessie R. Lander, 81, passed away peacefully Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at the Livingston County Campus in Mt. Morris.
Bessie was born July 8, 1923, in Dansville, a daughter of Otto and Florence (Scott) Holbrook. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl S. Lander, on May 15, 1981. She was a homemaker and mother of three daughters. In her younger years, she had worked at Blum Shoe Factory and the White Horse Crest, both of Dansville.
She was a member of the South Dansville United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. She and her husband Earl enjoyed traveling and camping after Earl's retirement. They took many trips, visiting 49 of the 50 states.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Burger of Wayland, Marilyn Bridge of Dansville and Lorraine Gianvecchio of Rochester; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Roscoe Shull of Conesus, Cecil Curtis of Mt. Morris, Elmer and Ila Lander of Atlanta, Glen Harloff of Wayland and Doris and Raymond Alger of Silver Creek; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at the Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St., Dansville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, South Dansville.

ELEANOR H. ELWELL
DANSVILLE - Eleanor H. Elwell, 77, died Wednesday (Aug. 18, 2004) in Hornell, after a long illness.
Eleanor was born in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Tober on Dec. 7, 1922. In October 1950 she was married to Lawrence Elwell, and they shared 54 years of marriage together. Eleanor had been employed at Alfred State College as a keypunch operator, and spent a good number of years raising her three sons.
Eleanor is survived by her husband Lawrence of Hornell; three sons, Gary (Barbara) Elwell of Waterloo, Roger (Patty) Elwell of Moscow, Pa., and Mark (Carin) Elwell of Arkport; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior calling hours. Interment
will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.

KATHRYN G. WHITAKER
MT. MORRIS - Kathryn G. Whitaker, 67, of 317 Garden Lane, Mt. Morris, formerly of Rochester, died Tuesday (Aug. 17, 2004) at the Livingston County SNF in Geneseo.
She was born the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy (Mattern) Chittenden on Oct. 4, 1936, in Rochester. She worked as a house cleaner in Rochester for many years until her retirement. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Rochester.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Wayne) Ashley of Mt. Morris; one brother, Gary (Mary) Chittenden of Wakkill; one sister, Clare Shepard of Hornell; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husbands, William Whitaker and Kenneth F. Witter Sr.; son, Kenneth Witter Jr. in 1963; and brother, George Chittenden in 1973.
There will be no prior calling. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. at the John W. Martin Funeral Home, 37 Chapel St. (Route 408), Mt. Morris.

DONALD JAMES REITNAUER
CORNING - Donald James Reitnauer, 66, of Kerrick Hollow Rd., Corning, died Friday (Aug. 13, 2004) at his home in Hornby.
Don was born Jan. 16, 1938, in Hornell, the son of the late Charles and Ruth (Hover) Reitnauer. He married Sheila Brown (Smith), Nov. 24, 2001, in Corning. He was a graduate of Hornell High School and Corning Community College. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam war. Don was employed by American Red Cross in Corning.
His survivors include his wife Sheila at home; three stepsons, Benjamin Smith of Dushore, Pa., Andrew Smith and Darren Smith of Painted Post; one sister, Suzanne (Wes) McCrea; one brother, Karl (Ann) Reitnauer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Faith Lutheran Church, 71 W. First St., Corning, with Pastor Gerhard Grabenhofer officiating. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery.

JAMES L. HENSHAW
ARKPORT - James L. Henshaw, 76, of 68 Main St., died Tuesday (Aug. 17, 2004) at St. James Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past week.
Born May 13, 1928, in North Hornell, he was the son of James L. and Albertine Wyant Henshaw. James was married April 4, 1964, in Arkport to Joanne M. Scoffield, who survives. He was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Eymer and Phyllis Henshaw.
He had been employed by the former Hornell Woodworking Corp. in Hornell, the former S.K.F. Industries in Hornell, a truck driver for C.L. Wellington, Hornell; and later retired from the Griffith Oil Co. Following retirement, James was employed for six years at Cy's Shurfine Shopwise in Arkport. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Marilyn (John) Applebee of Bath, Janice Czimback of Elmira, Marsha Hmiel of Bath and Lynn (Jamie) Lantz of Arkport; four sons, Jim (Bonnie) Henshaw of Hornell, Steve (Linda) Henshaw of Arkport, Lewis Henshaw of New York and Bill (Cathy) Henshaw of Syracuse; one sister, Margaret Carrillo of Phoenix, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 19, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, with Rev. Dudley Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in the Arkport Cemetery, Arkport.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
MERCEDES L. NICHOLS
WAYLAND - Mercedes Lorch Nichols, 83, passed away early Monday morning (Aug. 16, 2004) at her home of 310 Granger Rd., Wayland.
Mercedes was born April 23, 1921, in Rochester, the daughter of John and Eva (Emery) Lorch. She resided in the Rochester area for the early years of her life. Mercedes and John William Nichols entered into a loving marriage on Nov. 6, 1954. Together they celebrated over 36 years of marriage prior to John's passing in March 1990. Prior to moving to Wayland approximately 21 years ago, Mercedes and John lived in many different areas throughout their life. Those areas included Livonia, Greece and Hemlock. Mercedes' employment career included many years at two different companies. She worked for the Stromberg Carlson Telephone Company and for Kodak. Mercedes was fortunate to retire from both of those companies after many years of employment.
Quilting, reading and cats were among some of Mercedes' joys. She also enjoyed her trips to Reno, Nev., to spend time with her grandchildren and frequent a casino once in a while.
Mercedes was predeceased in life by her beloved husband of 36 years, John William Nichols.
Mercedes is survived by her sons, Timothy Sawyer and his wife Eleanor of Fairport; and William Nichols and his wife Robyn of Reno, Nev.; her daughters, Sharon Sawyer Dunn and her husband Oliver of Virginia Beach, Va.; Jacqueline L. Nichols of Wayland; her grandchildren, John W. Nichols, Jennifer A. Nichols, Roger Pierce, Marsha Becker, Shawn (Laurie) Victa, Seth (Beth) Dunn, LeeAnn (Tony) Regna; three great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Raymond Lorch and his wife Norma of Webster; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mercedes' funeral service will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

VALORA M. GAY
NORTH HORNELL - Valora M. Gay, 98, formerly of Maplewood Avenue, died Thursday (Aug. 12, 2004) at the home of her daughter in North East, Md.
Born in Canisteo, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Mary Cathren Coots Crozier. On July 31, 1929, she was married in Hornell to Lloyd H. Gay, who predeceased her on June 3, 1994, after 65 years of marriage.
A resident of the village of North Hornell for 60 years, she was employed at the former Tuttle & Rockwell store in Hornell as a sales clerk for several years. Her family includes her daughter, Vada (Gerald) Gage of North East, Md., with whom she had resided the past 15 years; her son-in-law, William Collingwood of Morton, Ill.; her three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also her nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Valora was predeceased by her daughter, Ruth Collingwood; her three sisters, Vada Clarke, Luella McCollum and Edna Atherton; also her two brothers, Valchester Crozier and Archie Crozier.
A graveside service will be held in her memory at Fairview Cemetery, Towlesville, at a later date.

RICHARD T. DONOVAN
DANSVILLE - Richard T. Donovan, 77, passed away early Sunday evening (Aug. 15, 2004) at the Vincent House in Wayland.
He was born in Mt. Morris on July 12, 1927, a son of the late Richard Michael and Genevieve McComb Donovan. He was also predeceased by a sister, Doris Dennison; and a nephew, Tom Dennison.
He was a US Army veteran, serving from 1945 to 1946, and a US Coast Guard veteran, serving for over four years.
Richard was a communicant of Sacred Heart of Jesus in Lewisburg, Pa., and the Holy Family Parish in Wayland. He was a rural mail carrier for several years. He was a member of the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society. Richard was the editor of the World Guide To Covered Bridges.
He is survived by two sisters, Kay (DeMerle) Hoag of Dansville and Ruth (Arthur) Croston of Mt. Morris; a brother, Robert (Michele) Donovan, also of Mt. Morris. Richard is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 4-8 p.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Dansville. Interment
will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

WILLIAM C. BARTLETT
HORNELL - William C. Bartlett, 70, of 34 Taylor St., died Saturday (Aug. 14, 2004) at the Bath VAMC.
Born in Hornell, Nov. 9, 1933, a son of Richard and Angie Sprong Bartlett, he had resided in Hornell most of his life.
Bill was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1952. He had served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Bill had been employed for the Hornell City School District as superintendent of buildings and grounds, retiring in 1989.
He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Jane Bartlett, on July 25, 1995.
He is survived by one son, Richard (Rose) Bartlett of Hornell; one sister, Susan (William) Shull of Hornell; two brothers, David (Sandy) Bartlett and Charles Bartlett of Hornell; two granddaughters, Shelby Bartlett and Nicole Hayes; mother-in-law, Stella Hunt of Bath; sister-in-law, Joanne Mastin of Hornell; several nieces and nephews.

CAMERON - Donna I. Sanford, 52, of 3987 Lamphier Road, went to be with her Lord Thursday (Aug. 12, 2004) at her home.
Born in Hornell Aug. 19, 1951, the daughter of Hugh and Mary Butler Campbell, she had resided in the South Canisteo-Cameron area all her life.
Donna graduated from Canisteo Central School, class of 1969, and Houghton College, class of 1973. She was a member of the West Jasper Wesleyan Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher and a former board member.
She had been employed by the former Marion-Rohr Company in Hornell for 20 years and later as a custodian for the Jasper-Troupsburg Central School District for nine years.
She is survived by her husband, William Sanford, whom she married Aug. 18, 1973; her parents, Hugh and Mary Campbell of Cameron; one son, Brandon Sanford of Montana; two sisters, Darlene (Dan) Farrand of Addison and Christine (David) Waters of Greenwood; one brother, John (Debra) Campbell of Cameron. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family will be present 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, to receive friends at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo. Christian funeral services will be held at the West Jasper Wesleyan Church Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m., Rev. Todd Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Gulley Cemetery in the town of Jasper.

JOANNE B. RAUBER
WELLSVILLE - Joanne B. Rauber, 67, passed away Saturday (Aug. 14, 2004) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center.
She was born on Feb. 24, 1937, in Wellsville, the daughter of Richard and Margaret "Louise" (O'Keefe) Donovan. On June 8, 1963, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, she married Richard B. Rauber, who survives.
Joanne was a lifelong resident of Wellsville, except for 13 years that she lived in Croghan. She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception School 10th grade and Elmira Catholic High School. She was a sister of St. Joseph and taught in Rochester for five years. She was employed as a nurse's aid at several area nursing home. She was also a homemaker and a member of the Immaculate Conception Church.
In addition to her husband, Joanne is survived by two sons, Rick Rauber of Friendship and Thomas Rauber of Wellsville; two daughters, Katherine Rauber of Derby and Teresa Rauber of Friendship; five grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Kitty) Donovan; a sister-in-law, Joyce Donovan; and several nieces and nephews.
In 1976, she was predeceased by her brother, John C. Donovan.
Friends are invited to call Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 9:30-10 a.m. at J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville. There will be a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, with Father Rupert Aruvalan as celebrant. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville.

CAROLYNNE PARTRIDGE
DALTON/DANSVILLE - Carolynne "Susie" E. Partridge, 63, of 10050 Barkertown Road, Dalton, passed away early Saturday morning (Aug. 14, 2004) at her home.
Susie was born March 23, 1941, in Ossian, the daughter of Kenneth and Joyce (Kennedy) Partridge. She resided in and around the Dansville area her entire life. Susie was employed as a telephone operator and aid at the Rochester Psychiatric Center and was also employed at SUNY Geneseo. Susie was also a member of the Dansville Legion Auxiliary.
Susie was predeceased in life by both of her parents.
She is survived by her brothers, Kenneth "Jake" Partridge, and his wife, Florence, of Groveland; and James "Jim" Partridge, and his wife, Carol, of Cartersville, Va.; sister, Fran Mann of Nunda; stepmother, Alice Partridge of Geneseo; stepfather, Bruce Daley of Geneseo; along with aunts, uncles; and several nieces and nephews.
Susie's family and friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Susie's funeral service will be conducted immediately following calling hours at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with Father Phil Kuhn officiating. Interment

DANSVILLE - Catherine A. "Cathy" Werth, 56, of Poag's Hole Road, Dansville, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening (Aug. 10, 2004) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, after a short illness.
She was born in Wayland on Jan. 3, 1948, a daughter of the late Arthur F. and June M. Schmitz Hillier. On July 23, 1966, she was married to Arthur J. "Art" Werth, who survives. She was also predeceased by a brother, Phillip Hillier.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Art, are her son, Marc Werth of Dansville; two daughters, Deborah (Jerry) Robson of Waterloo and Darlene Werth of Dansville; three grandchildren, Joseph, Jesse and Alexis; two brothers, Herm (Rose) Hillier and Pete (Bobbie) Hillier, both of Dansville; two sisters, Rhonda (Ralph) Burdick of West Sparta and Diana (Randy) Wilson of Castile; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

BRYDE M. KUHNE
ALMOND - Bryde M. Kuhne, 90, of 9 Chapel St., died Tuesday (Aug. 10, 2004) at the home of a niece, Marge Burger, in Hornell, following a long illness.
She was born Sept. 20, 1913, in Daniels Harbour, Newfoundland, the daughter of George and Dorcas House Moss. Earlier she was married to Clifton F. McIntosh, and later was married to Fred Kuhne.
A graduate of the former Bethesda School of Nursing in North Hornell, Bryde was a registered nurse, employed for many years at former Bethesda Hospital in North Hornell. Later, she was employed in the Infirmary at Alfred State College, retiring in 1979. She had been a very active member of the Women's Auxiliary at Bethesda Hospital and had assisted in the laying of the corner stone for the new hospital about 45 years ago. She loved her family and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and knitting. She was a member of the Almond Union of Churches.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Alice Brennan of Santa Ana, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Gladys Guilford of Friendship and Marlies (Fred) Warner of Belmont; a son, George (Bev) McIntosh of Holland, Mich.; and stepson, Karl Kuhne of New York; four sisters, Mary Stares of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Jessie House, Frieda Guinchard and Hazel Eisan, all of Newfoundland; one brother, Michael (Priscilla) Moss of Newfoundland; five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, several step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, with Rev. Steven Dygert officiating. Final interment
will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond.

WEBSTER - Nathan Paul Griffin, infant son of Michael and Karen Matusiak Griffin, died on Saturday (Aug. 7, 2004) in Rochester.
Besides his parents, he leaves his maternal grandparents, Richard and Jean Matusiak of New York Mills; paternal grandparents, Grover and Eleanor Griffin of Hornell; paternal great-grandfather, Charles Griffin; aunt, Deborah (Raymond) Houle; uncles, Richard (Debra) Matusiak, Matthew (Louann), Patrick (Michele) and Jeffrey (Stacey) Griffin; 14 cousins.

EDWARD JOSEPH STRYKER
ELMIRA - Edward Joseph Stryker, 77, of Elmira, passed away on Thursday (Aug. 5, 2004) at home.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1926, in Elmira Heights. Edward was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy, where, in 1944, he received the Golden Gloves for boxing. He retired from Erie Railroad, later known as Conrail, on July 31, 1988. He attended Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Church.
He is survived by his children, Marisa Stryker, Renata (Michael) Greco, Vincent J. (Pam) Stryker and Claudia Stryker; grandchildren, Peter and Anthony Greco, and Samantha Danz; sister, Betty Jane (Earl) Thorpe; niece, Denise Wamser; and nephew, Stephen J. Thorpe.
Arrangements were handled by the Ballard & Lindgren Funeral Home, Elmira.
DENNIS NEAL MORGAN
POMONA, Calif. - Dennis Neal Morgan, 56, of La Verne, Calif., died Friday (Aug. 6, 2004) at Ember Care Facility in Pomona, Calif., after a long illness.
Born in North Hornell on Dec. 3, 1947, he was the son of the late Clester Meryl Morgan, born in Lindley, and Ruby Rachel Coker, born in McKinney, Texas.
He was a retired Real Estate Broker.
Survivors include his mother, Ruby Tobey of Caton; two sons, Dennis Neal Morgan II of Bloomington, Minn., and Jesse Owen Morgan of Concordia, Kansas; two daughters, Jennifer Eileen Westling of Minnetonka, Minn., and JulleAnn Panot Breeding of Jasper, Ind.; two brothers; Jeffrey L. Tobey of La Verne, Calif., and Stephen L. Tobey of Corning; four sisters; Carolyn S. Garcia of San Antonio, Texas, Glenna J. Lamb of Cedar Hills, Texas, S. Diane Keck of Cedars Hills, Texas, and Gail E. Keeling of Fairfax, Va.; six grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
His last wishes were to not have any services.
