BELFAST - Devoted husband, father and son Richard E. Backer III, 56, of 2 South St., died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004) at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville. Born Jan. 19, 1948 at Dover, N.J., he was the son of Richard E. and Betty L. Morris Backer, Jr. On May 16, 1970, in Ithaca, he married the former Daphne R. "Becky" Hammond, who survived.

HORNELL - Merle G. McCormick, 72, of 46 Scott St., died Saturday evening (Nov. 27, 2004) at McAuley Manor, following a long illness.

WAYLAND - Germaine Becker, 80, of 8964 Becker Rd., passed away early Friday morning (Nov. 5, 2004). Germaine's family and friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 7) at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 W. Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, (Nov. 8) at St. Joseph's Church, Wayland. Complete funeral arrangements will be announced in the Sunday Spectator.

HORNELL - Howard E. Derby, Sr., 87, of Edgeview Estates Park, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 2, 2004) at St. James Hospital.

SPARTA - Barbara I. Gaddy, 67, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

DOROTHY ALLEN HEDDEN
CAMP HILL, PA. - Dorothy Allen Hedden of Camp Hill, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, Pa. Born on Oct. 1, 1918 to Harry B. Allen and Ethel Crites Allen, she lived in Hornell for 83 years, and moved to Camp Hill in 2002. She graduated from Hornell High School in 1936, and worked at the Steuben Trust Company for seven years, leaving as a teller in 1941. She held various clerical positions, the last for nine years as teacher's aide at Hornell High School, and retired in 1981. She was active in her church and musical groups, and was often a soloist in church services and weddings. Active in her community and her children's schools, she was the local and state representative for national and state PTA. She also served for 13 years as the Welcome Wagon Hostess in Hornell.

A service will be held for George S. Lyke, 91, of 16 Cameron Ave., Hornell, who passed away early Tuesday morning (Nov. 2, 2004). The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. today, Friday (Nov. 5), to receive friends at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, where a Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 7:45 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 8 p.m. with Revs. William and Kristen Allen officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Avoca.

WAYLAND - Pauline A. Thielges, 81, of 11638 Reservoir Rd., passed away early Wednesday evening, Nov. 3, 2004, at the Vincent House Comfort Care Facility in Wayland.

FRIENDSHIP - Diana H. Gordon, 56, of 4460 State Route 275, passed away unexpectedly Thursday (November 4, 2004) at her home.

REXVILLE - Beverly A Miles, 67, of 1735 Cemetery Hill Road, passed away Wednesday (November 3, 2004) at her home.

DANSVILLE - May Mitchell, 94, passed away Saturday afternoon (November 6, 2004) at the Livingston County Skilled Nursing Facility in Mt. Morris.

MARY L. O'DONNELL
WELLSVILLE - Mary L. O'Donnell passed away Saturday (November 6, 2004) at the Highland Health Care Center. She was born September 25, 1917, in Stone Dam, Town of Willing, to Domenico and Filomaini Ciarlantini. On October 17, 1934, in Genesee, Pa., she married Joseph A. O'Donnell, who predeceased her on March 29, 1966.

HORNELL - Richard G. Campbell, 76, of 22 Hakes Ave., passed away Thursday (November 11, 2004) at Rochester General Hospital.

WESLEY E. 'GENE' CONVERSE
KEUKA PARK - Wesley E. "Gene" Converse, 59, of Keuka Park, formerly Genesee, Pa., died Thursday (November 11, 2004). Born Dec. 8, 1944, in Ulysses, Pa., he was the son of Clayton W. and Marguerite Jeffers Converse. On Aug. 29, 1970, in Hickox, Pa., he married the former Sandra Hawks, who survives. Mr. Converse was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army from 1964-66. He was employed by Capital Plastics in Wellsville for 15 years and currently employed with Apple Barrel Orchards in Penn Yan where he has worked for 16 years. He was a member of the Genesee Volunteer Fire Company and the Genesee Rod and Gun Club. He was a hunter and NASCAR fan. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Steven E. Converse of Canandaigua; two daughters, Melissa (Rob Lasher) Converse of Rushville and Terri (Mark) Huber of Penn Yan; six granddaughters; a brother, Donald (Judy) Converse of Manheim, Pa.; a sister, Dorothy (Dennis) Buchholz of Middletown, Pa.; and two brothers-in-law, Dale (Georgia) Ransom of Genesee and LaVerne (Dolly) Knickerbocker of Corning. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Carol Ransom. Funeral services will be held at the Olney Funeral Home in Ulysses, Pa., today at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Genesee Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Genesee Volunteer Fire Company, Genesee, PA 16923.
