Mtn. Rest – Ellen Fay Lee Ables, 81, wife of the late Clyde Ables, 280 Ables Dr., died Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at her residence.
Born in Long Creek in 1926, she was a former executive housekeeper at OMH and SCH. Mrs. Ables attended Berry College, and was a member of Long Creek Baptist Church where she served as secretary and treasurer and Sunday School Class teacher.
Surviving is son, Michael Edward Ables and wife Catherine of Snellville, GA., grandchildren, Meredith Leigh McDaniel and husband James, PFC. Christopher Michael Ables and wife Merry and Larry Todd Alexander and wife Charlene, 5 great grandchildren Tyler James McDaniel, Sterling Jane Caspersen, Catherine Faye Ables, Austin Todd Alexander and Myra Ann Alexander and brother J.C. Lee of Westminster.
Her husband, the late Clyde Ables, parents Edward Lee and Nell Phillips Lee Thrift, brothers Bruce and Fleet Lee and sister Miss Betty J. Lee precede her in death.
Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, August 3, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Long Creek Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Thursday, August 2, 2007, at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of the Foothills Foundation, 390 Keowee School Rd, Seneca, SC 29672. The family is at the residence.

Westminster – Dorothy Lorene Dyar Grant, 40, of 350 Grant Rd., died Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Oconee County in 1967 she was a homemaker and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Surviving is husband Steve Anthony Grant of the home, daughters Brittany Marie and Amber Lynn Grant of the home, parents Reverend Larry and Dorothy King Dyar of Westminster, brothers Larry Keith Dyar and Andrew Earl Dyar both of Westminster and sisters Donna Lynn Bryson of Fair Play and Melissa Renee Brown of Westminster.
Funeral services will be 2 pm, Sunday, July 29, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster with Rev, Gerald Morgan and Rev. Cliff Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery.

Westminster – Jurriel Faye Turner Burdette, 64, of 135 Welcome Church Rd., died Wednesday July 25, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in 1943 in Kings Mtn., NC she was a homemaker and a member of Welcome Baptist Church.
Surviving are sons Roger Dale Turner of Westminster and Jonathan Scott Turner of Seneca, daughters Rita Langston, Felicia Craig and Brenda Bonham all of Westminster and step daughter Tammy Pitts of Georgia, brothers Ray, Larry and Stevie McNeely all of North Carolina, 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild and one step grandchild.
Twice married she is preceded in death by husbands John Bunyon Turner, Jr. and Carl Louie Burdette, parents Samuel JD and Irene McKee McNeely, sons Timothy Lane Turner, Johnny Turner and David Turner, daughters Connie Sue Turner and Cynthia Delores Turner.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Chauga Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Burdette will lie in state at 1 PM.

Westminster –Ruth Davis Sheriff, 83, of 2783 Toccoa Hwy, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
Born in 1924 in the Hopewell Community of Westminster, she was a contributing columnist for the Westminster News and a homemaker. Mrs. Sheriff was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Surviving are son Ronnie Sheriff and Diane, daughters Linda Wilmot and husband Clark, Bobbie Jean Cole and husband Joe, 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and sisters Carrie Quinn, Mary Mefferd and Sylvia Wood all of Westminster.
Her husband Fred Junior Sheriff, parents Thomas Russell and Bessie Allred Davis, brother Jack Davis and sisters June Garner, Eva Rae Adams and Bobbie Jo Owens precede her in death.
Funeral services will be 3 PM, Saturday July 28, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery.

James Edward "Jim" Merritt

SENECA
Chief Master Sergeant James Edward “Jim” Merritt, 76 of 271 Rodgers Rd., Earles Grove Community, Seneca, died Sunday, 22 July, 2007 at his residence.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of James E. Merritt, Sr., and Opal Merritt-Williams. He was a member of Earles Grove Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. Chief Merritt was retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) after thirty years of active military service during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received many military awards and decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal. Chief Merritt graduated from Clemson University, Cum Laude, after his retirement from the USAF and taught science and mathematics in high school in Oconee County for a short while. He was a Life Member of the Air Force Association and Air Force Sergeants Association and a volunteer at Oconee Memorial Hospital from 1994 until February 2007, where he accumulated well over 3000 hours of volunteer service.
Survivors are his wife, Polly M. Merritt, a daughter, Wanda and husband Luther Cartee of Seneca, a son and daughter-in-law Dean and Angela Merritt of 603 Shadow Oaks Dr.,Easley, 29642, and a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Yvette and David Rochester of Seneca, Grand Children, Kendall and Kaleigh Merritt, Macy and Josh Rochester, Hollie Carroll and DeAnne Cartee, and a special sister, Lola Morgan.
His first wife, Juanita M. Merritt, preceded him in death.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at Earles Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Kenny Owen officiating. Burial will follow with full Military Honors by Shaw Air Force Base in Earles Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Seneca, SC – Theresa Tucker Walsh Mollenhauer, 94, of Benton Village formerly of St. Augustine, FL died Thursday, July 12, 2007 at her residence.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1913 to Thomas and Mary Lawlor Tucker. Mrs Mollenhauer retired as an administrative assistant to the president in the banking industry in 1976 and moved to Pinellas Park, Florida before moving to St. Augustine, Fl, where she lived until moving to South Carolina.
Surviving is a son Dr. Thomas F. Walsh of Salem, SC; two daughters, Theresa Maloney of Mattawan, MI and Jeannie Castle of Blue Point, NY, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Francis A. Walsh and second husband Gerard Mollenhauer.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials in Mrs. Mollenhauer’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Foothills Foundation, 390 Keowee School Rd, Seneca, SC 29672.

Westminster – Glena Mamie Smith Wilson, 88, of 943 Seed Farm Rd., died Sunday, July 15, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
Born in Habersham County, GA in 1919, she was a homemaker and member of Clearmont Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are daughters Shelby Wittrock and Helen Busha both of Westminster, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Her husband Bewley D. Wilson, parents Charlie and Ellie Mae Reppes Smith, brothers Fred and George Smith and sisters Mae McNab, Lacy Ellrod and Faye Kelly precede her in death.
Funeral services will be 11 am, Tuesday, July 17, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home, Westminster. Burial will follow in the Clearmont Baptist Church Cemetery.

Liberty – Harbin Billy Brown, 65, of 1143 Chastain Rd. died Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Oconee County in 1941 he retired from the textile industry and attended Light House Mission Church. Mr. Brown was a Mason and a member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are wife Dorothy Smith Brown of the home, sons Richard Dean Brown of Pickens and Russell James Brown of Commerce, GA, daughter Norma Jean Hendrix of Liberty, brother Paul Brown of Seneca, sisters Ola Mae Holder, Betty Youngblood, Elizabeth Stancil, Cody Beatty and Edline Logan, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
His parents Gordon and Martha Johnson Brown and a son Billy Ray Brown precede him in death.
Funeral services will be 2 pm, Tuesday, July 17, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Heritage Memorial Gardens, Hwy 11, Westminster.

Seneca - Calvin Coolidge Marcus, 70, of 405 Overbrook Dr., died in Springfield, VA.
Born in Oconee County in 1936 he was the used car manager of S&S Auto Sales. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is wife, Betty Sue Head Marcus of the home, stepson Sgt. George B. Cain of Ft. Campbell, KY, stepdaughters Peggy L. Cain and Nancy Jane Cain both of Westminster, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, brothers James, Billy and Ralph Marcus all of Westminster and Bruce Marcus of Seneca, sisters Edna Dockins, Linda Chambers and Emily Carver all of Seneca.
His parents Lee and Ora Cordelia Lee Marcus, brothers Dean and Jack Marcus and sister Flora Long precede him in death.
Funeral services will be 11 AM, Saturday, July 14, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Calvary Church of God Cemetery.

Born in Oconee County, he was employed by Itron, Inc where worked in design qualification. David was a graduate of Tri County Tech. He was a member of Westminster Baptist Church, the Coed Sunday School Class and the Wheels of Faith Motorcycle Ministry.
Surviving are wife, Karen Moore Dickson of the home, daughter Brandyn Carlton and husband Jonathan of US Army National Guard, Pendleton, stepson Andy Bennett and wife Jennie of Westminster, step daughter Rachel Bennett of Westminster, sisters Barbara King and husband Frank of Seneca and Rachel Dickson Derrick of Westminster, two grandchildren Brooke Carlton and Drew Bennett.
His parents Jesse Rupert and Gladys Kelly Dickson and infant brother Donald Dickson precede him in death.

Born in Toledo, OH in 1962, he was a subcontractor for Larry Wellington. He was a veteran of the US Navy.
Surviving are wife, Diane Brooks Perry of the home, sons, Jacob and Blake Perry of Ohio, daughters Niki Corbett of Walhalla and Quicha Tannery of Westminster, brother James Perry of Michigan, sisters Linda Ossitifin and Cindy Harrelson of Michigan, father and mother-in-law, Charles and Betty Brooks of Westminster, brother-in-law, Jody Smith, sisters-in-law, Wanda Smith and Stacy Brooks of Westminster and five grandchildren, Riley Queen, Zoe Corbett, Tabor Harden, Kai Corbett, Kane Miller

Westminster – Mabel Cashin Whitmire, 91, formerly of 309 N. Ave. died shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
Born in Oconee County, she attended Westminster High School and was a member of Westminster Baptist Church, and a dedicated homemaker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar James “Eddy” Whitmire and son Robert Lewis Whitmire
She was the daughter of the late Ozzie Esmond and Janie Wyly Cashin, and had survived the loss of brothers Gordon Lamar (Westminster), Edward Thomas (Orangeburg), Frank Hall (Westminster), Albert Brandes (Villa Rica, Ga.), Henry Barkley (Westminster), and sister Ethel C. Dance (Toccoa, Ga.).
She is survived by her sister, Sarah Cashin Wilhelm of Clemson and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2007 in the First Baptist Memorial Park in Westminster. Reverend John McKnight will officiate.
The family will receive friends 1 – 1:45 p.m. Friday, at the Sandifer Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted.

Born in Oconee County in 1919, she was homemaker and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Homer, Ga.
Survivors include sons Harold Sheriff and wife Betty, Reverend David Sheriff and wife Rachel, Jimmy Sheriff and wife Faye, daughters Patricia Fullbright and husband Danny, Barbara Freeman and husband William, 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Her husband John Malcolm Sheriff, son John Wayne Sheriff, parents Samuel and Eloise Moore Tucker, brothers Ray, Charles and Marvin Tucker and grandson David Sheriff, Jr. precede her in death.
Funeral services will be 11 am Saturday, July 7, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will be 3 pm Saturday at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Homer, GA.

Born in Jefferson City, TN in 1919, Mrs. Stancil retired from J.P. Stevens Clemson Plant and was a member of Fair Play Church of God.
Survivors include sons Eddie L. Stancil of Fair Play, Rev. Larry E. Stancil of Townville, and Marty Stancil of Fair Play, daughters Jeanene Evans of Bowersville, GA, Avelene Brewer of Seneca and Sandra Harper of Fair Play, brothers Hobert Collins of Knoxville, TN, half-brothers Henry Ford Russell of Portland, OR and James Russell of Arizona, sister Gladys Cothran of Knoxville, TN, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Her husband, Rev. Robert Edgar Stancil and parents Henry McCorkle and Nellie Mae Wright Russell precede her in death.

Surviving are husband Clarence George Hawkins of the home, sons George Bradley and James Michael Hawkins of Seneca, daughters Frances Smith, Daisy Lynn Cannon and Cathy Ann Cannon all of Seneca, sister Joyce Baxton of Seneca, cousins Lisa Chapman, Greg Hawkins, Genia Hawkins and Scott Hawkins and one grandchild, Misty Renee Hunnicutt.
Her parents Ernest and Eugenia Craine precede her in death.

Westminster – Hattie McGuffin Freeman, 95, of 247 Burt Freeman Dr., died Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
Born in Helen, GA in 1912, she had worked at Oconee Mills for several years. Mrs. Freeman was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a member of Clearmont Baptist Church and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are daughters Hazel McCall of Westminster, Sara Sims of Seneca and Mary Ann Holden of Walhalla, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
Her husband, the late Williams Burt Freeman, son James Leroy Freeman, grandson Barry McCall, great grandson Michael Leopard, parents Lawrence and Sue Bell Pitts McGuffin, four brothers and two sisters precede her in death.
Funeral services will be 3 PM, Sunday, August 26, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Clearmont Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in Oconee County in 1919, Mrs. Carver had retired from the textile industry having worked for 10 years at Beacon Mfg., and later at Richland Garment Plant. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving are sons Roy Carver and wife Brenda of Savannah, GA., and Charles Carver and wife Judy of Seneca, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and half-brother Carlize Lee of Westminster.
Her husband, John Henry Carver, parents Bert and Sally Harbin Lee and eight siblings predecease her.
Graveside services will be 3:30 pm, Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Park.

Westminster – Dewey Ryal Bowen, 88, of 5857 West Oak Hwy, died Friday, August 24, 2007 at his home.
Born in Oconee County in 1918, Mr. Bowen was a member of the Westminster Rotary Club; he was a Paul Harris Fellow and a founder of the Westminster Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, a member of the Cattleman’s Association and Bethel Baptist Church. He was the owner of B& B Pipeline Company.
Surviving is wife Lula Bess Keese Bowen of the home, sons Dewey Keese Bowen of Walhalla, John Ryal Bowen and Edward Eubanks Bowen both of Westminster, daughters Mahala Bowen Moore of Colbert, GA., and Peggy Bowen Moore of Westminster, brothers John Hulan Bowen of Mobile, AL, sister Ethelda Bowen Ables of Sanford, FL, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 4-6 pm, Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. A private family burial will be held on Monday, August 27, 2007 in the Bowen Family Cemetery.

Seneca – Betty Emma Crymes Leroy, 78, of 455 Lawrence Bridge Rd., died Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenville County in 1929, Mrs. Leroy was a homemaker.
Surviving are sons Floyd Clifton “Nut” Leroy, Jr., Donnie Wayne Leroy and James Richard “Rick” Leroy all of Seneca, daughters Sarah Brown and Betty Johnson both of Seneca, sister Frances Beech of Hickory, NC, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two expected great grandchildren.
Her husband, the late Floyd Clifton Leroy, son Billy Edward Leroy, parents Bub and Delia McJunkin Crymes, brother James Crymes and sister Willie Mae Justice predecease her.
Funeral services will be 11:30 am, Saturday, August 25, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Oconee Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 am, Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. The family is at their respective homes. Flowers are accepted.

Longwood, FL - Ken Alan Gregory, 48 of 232 Tolgate Trail, passed December 25, 2006 away in Florida.
Born in Encino, CA he was employed as a computer engineer with Universal Studios in Orlando. He was a veteran of the US Navy as a nuclear technician. Mr. Gregory was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts and attained his Eagle Scout Award at the age of 14.
He is survived by his wife Debra George Gregory, son Robert regory and daughter Michelle Gregory, parents Robert and Velma Smith Gregory and sister Kim Caroenas and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, January 5, 2006 at Heritage Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Hwy 11, Westminster, SC.

Lance Lindenfield

Westminster, S.C. – Lance Michael Lindenfield, 66 of 107 Point Place Dr. died Monday, August 20, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1940; he lived in the Hackettstown area over ten years. Mr. Lindenfield was a Mason and a Cub Scout Leader. He was a foster parent in New Jersey and Georgia and volunteered in many civic organizations in addition to being a counselor on a drug help line. Mr. Lindenfield was a member of the Mountain Park Masonic Lodge #729 in Stone Mtn., GA. He was a manufacturing sales representative and has owned and operated a vacuum cleaner business.
His wife, Margarite Padula Lindenfield, daughter Kris Abouyan of Canton, GA and brother and sister in law Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Padula survive him.
His parents, Fabian and Evelyn Levowsky Lindenfield, predecease him.
Graveside services will be 2 pm, Friday, August 24, 2007 at Hackettstown Union Cemetery in Hackettstown, New Jersey. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 pm, prior to the service at the Cochran Funeral Home in Hackettstown, NJ where Masonic rites will be given. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Hospice of the Foothills Foundation, 390 Keowee School Rd., Seneca, SC 29672.
