Predeceasing Mr. Besaw are one son Clayton G. Jr., who died during childbirth, one sister, Claire Romano, three brothers, Frederick, Gilbert, and Willard. Born in Canton on April 15, 1926, he was a son of Gilbert Gerald and Mabel Elizabeth Wheeler Besaw and graduated from Canton High School in 1942. While in high school, he played football and still worked 2-3 part time jobs. Later on he would often take various courses at Cornell University. He served in the United States Navy on a submarine during World War II in the Pacific Theater from 1943-1945. After returning to Canton in 1945, he started working at Loblaw’s Grocery in Ogdensburg as a grocery boy. Mr. Besaw continued to work with the company until he retired as District General Manager in 1977. In 1978, Mr. Besaw started working at the St. Lawrence County Department of Real Property as the Deputy Director, retiring in 1988. An avid sports fan, he was a supporter of the St. Lawrence University Womens’ Hockey Team. He also enjoyed Canton Pee Wee Hockey. Among his most enjoyable interests was music and art, rock collecting and was an accomplished photographer.

Predeceasing Mr. Mallam are two brothers Duncan and James and one sister Elizabeth. Born December 29, 1913 in Niagara Falls, he was a son of Edward Douglas and Elizabeth Duncan Mallam and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1932. On December 28, 1938, he married Mary Louise Rice in Williamsfield, Illinois. After earning his BA in 1936, he completed his Masters in 1938 and then received his PhD, in 1941, all from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Mallam then taught at the University of Colorado for a brief time before entering the United States Army on April 17, 1942. He continued service after the war in the Army Reserves and obtained the rank of Captain before his discharge in 1953. In 1946 the family moved to Canton, where he accepted the position of History Professor at St. Lawrence University. After retiring from St. Lawrence in 1978, an award was created in his honor, recognizing the outstanding senior majoring in history, the William D. Mallam, Senior History Majors Award. Mr. Mallam was a very active member and often published articles in the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, the American Historical Association and the St. Lawrence County Historical Association. He was also a long standing member of the Canton and St. Lawrence County Democratic Committee and was a member of the American Association of University Professors. Mr. Mallam had a lifelong interest in the game of tennis, both as a player and a fan.
Mary Louise Mallam, 90, 37 Riverside Drive, Canton, died on December 27, 2005 at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home. The funeral will be January 2, 2006 at 11:00 AM, at the Gunnison Chapel on St. Lawrence University Campus.

Born December 19, 1915, in Galesburg, Illinois, a daughter of the late Glenn M. and Edna Coolidge Rice, she was valedictorian of the class of 1932 at Williamsfield (Ill.) High School and graduated magna cum laude in 1936 from Knox College, Galesburg. She received her Master’s Degree in 1937 from the University of Illinois and began her doctoratework at the University of Minnesota. On December 28, 1938, she married William Douglas Mallam in Williamsfield, Illinois. Mr. Mallam died October 15, 2003. The couple moved to Canton in 1946, where they both were employed by St. Lawrence University. Dr. Mallam was a history professor and Mrs. Mallam was the Librarian at the Owen D. Young Library. Mrs. Mallam was an active member of the League of Women Voters; she was a Board member and instrumental in the creation of North Country Reference and Research Resources Council, now called Northern NY Library Network. She was also a member of the St. Lawrence County Historical Society and Friends of Owen D. Young Library. Mrs. Mallam enjoyed playing Bridge and traveling abroad. Carol Belshaw, 66, Williston, South Carolina, died Saturday, September 27, 2003 at the Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC. The funeral will be Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 9:45 a.m., at the Crary Mills Cemetery.
Surviving are mother Irene G. Kyle of Williston, S.C.; two daughters and son-in-laws Tami and Charles “Chuck” Reynolds of Williston, S.C.; Carolyn and Robin Decker of Cortland, NY; One sister Mrs. Adam ( Martha) Helmer of Canton, NY. She is also survived by five grandchildren. She is predeceased by one son William Robert Belshaw, who died shortly after birth. Born January 17, 1937 in Pierrepont, NY, the daughter of William Theodore & Irene Margaret Guyette Kyle. She was a 1954 graduate from Potsdam High School, she attended Rochester Business Institute. On December 24, 1958 she married Robert John Belshaw in Georgia. Mrs. Belshaw was employed with Bell Telephone in Potsdam, secretary at Potsdam Central High School and in the Art Department at SUNY Potsdam, before moving to South Carolina in 1980 where she worked at a Chem- Nuclear also a secretary. Mrs. Belshaw was member of the Victory Baptist Church, South Carolina

He was most recently a representative for Gallagher Fence of Houston, TX. Mr. O'Connor was a member of the New York State and New England Farm Dealers Association and a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Canton.
Maria D. Lennon, 66, 31 Irish Settlement Road, Colton, died September 1, 2003 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, VT. The funeral will be Friday, September 5, 2003 at 11 a.m., at the St. Mary's Church in Canton.

Lennon and her husband Wearn Heinz, Pipersville, Pa., Kathleen E. Willow Grove, Pa. and one son; Dennis M., Willard, NY. Predeceasing Mrs. Lennon are two half-brothers, Elwood Voell and Thomas Voell. Born in Abington, Pa. on September 3, 1936, she was the daughter of Anton and Francis Meehan Borras. She graduated from Canton High School. On October 23, 1953, she married Wilbert Edward Lennon in Centerville, Maryland. A member of the Franciscan Order, she took the name Paula Francis, after she was novitiated in 1963 and admitted to the Holy Profession in 1965 to the Third Order of St. Francis. Mrs. Lennon was a member of the Needle Crafters Guild of America, Member of the Board of Directors of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and assisted at the Warminster, Pennsylvania church rectory in the Nativity of Our Lord Church. Prior to moving to the Pierrepont Area in 1975, she was employed as the Assistant Manager of the Stars & Strips Shop in Peddlers Village, PA. From 1989 until 1995, Mrs. Lennon and her husband ran the Stone Metal Farm Antiques Plus shop.
Mrs. Eleanor J. Kelly, 93, 35 Riverside Drive and formerly of 21 Fairlane Drive & 37 Judson Street in Canton, died Friday, June 6, 2003 at Massena Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 12:15 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Canton.

Predeceasing Mrs. Kelly are one step-son Thomas J. Kelly, one step-granddaughter, Lori Kelly and one brother Carlton Jamieson. Born in Canton on July 15, 1909, she was the daughter of Frank Carlton and Mabel Morrow Jamieson and graduated from Canton High School in the 1920’s. After attending St. Lawrence University she then graduated from Canton ATI with an Associates degree in Nutrition. On February 11, 1935, she married Homer Thomas Kelly at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton. Mr. Kelly was President of the First National Bank of Canton and died December 28, 1991. After first working at the Grammar School Cafeteria, she was summoned by Hugh C. Williams to establish the New High School Cafeteria for the opening in 1953. Mrs. Kelly retired in the mid-1950’s from Canton Central School. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, Mrs. Kelly was superintendent of the Sunday School at the church, for a number of years. Mrs. Kelly was a long time member of the Empire Chapter # 68, Order of the Eastern Star and had been a social member of the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club and enjoyed playing Bridge.

Born February 16, 1953, in Plattsburgh, New York, a son of Lois Frederick and Clara Margaret Ayotte Agoney, he attended Ellenburg School and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. On October 25, 1986, he married Lisa May Sherman at the Canton Club. Prior to entering the Army, Mr. Agoney was employed as a carpet layer. Following his release from the armed services, he was employed by the Town of Saranac as a snow plow/truck driver and with the Department of Mental Hygiene at the Wassaic Developmental Center as a food service worker before being forced to retire due to poor health.

Also surviving are her maternal grandmother, Katherine Gourley, Sarasota, Florida, paternal grandparents, Henry J. and Yvonne Hinman, Sr., Sarasota, Florida, two nephews, Henry and Jack Hinman, also of Sarasota, and a niece and nephew, Alexander and Emily Hinman, Charlotte, N.C. Born in Bangor, Maine on March 22, 1965, she was the daughter of Henry Jackson Hinman and Ellen Elizabeth Gourley Hinman, Jr. After graduating from Carrabec High School in 1983, she received her bachelors degree as a mechanical engineer from the University of Maine, School of Engineering in 1987. She worked as a mechanical engineer at Alcoa in Massena from 1987-1989, before moving to Canton. For a number of years, she worked at Adirondack Land Surveying. Most recently she worked as a partner with Mickey Flores and Debbie Thacker in Cybertrail Outfitters in the web sight design business, located in Canton. A New York State Licensed Guide, she loved the outdoors, paddling her kayak and working around her home that she designed and built herself, as she was an accomplished woodworker.

In 1934 he received his Masters degree from Boston University School of Theology . On July 27, 1935, he married Marion Ella Steves at the home of her parents in Needham Heights, Massachusetts. Mrs. Scouten died April 20, 2002. Together, Rev. Scouten and his wife served parishes in Chartley, Massachusetts, before returning to New York State to serve in Parish, Newport, Minetto, Beaver Falls, Willowvale, Sandy Creek, Ogdensburg and finally the Malone United Methodist Church, from which he retired in 1975. The couple moved to Annapolis, Maryland, where they resided for 26 years, before moving to Canton in 1999 to be near their daughter Susan and lived at the Partridge Knoll retirement residence. Rev. Scouten was an avid outdoorsman and an FAA Licensed Airplane Pilot. While living in Ogdensburg, he owned several airplanes, one of which was a float plane. He was a member of the Malone Flying Club. A member of the Northern New York Conference of the United Methodist Church, he served as chairman for the committee for ecumenical concerns and then the Nominating Committee for Conference Trustees.

Born September 12, 1910 in Needham, Mass. she was the daughter of Kelsey and Mariah Armstrong Steves and graduated from Needham High School in 1928. On July 27, 1935, she married E. Kendall Scouten at the home of her parents in Needham Heights, Massachusetts. Mrs. Scouten graduated cum laude from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. and did her nursing training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. She served as District Nurse in Boston. From 1958-1961 served as School Nurse Teacher at Sandy Creek Central School, then from 1961-1967 at Ogdensburg Free Academy, and then as District Nurse at the Franklin County Department of Social Services in Malone from 1967-1975. The couple then moved to Anapolis, Maryland, where they lived until 2000, when they returned to Northern New York to live at Partridge Knoll on Sullivan Drive in Canton. Mrs. Scouten was a member of the Canton United Methodist Church and a past member of the Newport New York chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is predeceased by one brother, Robert Murray Conant in 1951 and stepmother Kathleen McCarthy Mead Conant who raised her after her mother passed away. Born in Ilion, NY on June 8 1945, she was the daughter of Clarence Grovsner and Mildred Elizabeth Murray Conant. After graduating from Canton High School in 1963, she joined the United States Marine Corps in 1964 and remained there until December 18 1970 as a Staff sergeant. Shortly after, Miss Conant graduated from Canton ATC in 1972 with an AAS in Accounting. She worked 1 year at Seaway National Bank and continued on to work for 30 years at the Jefferson Rehabilitation center. Miss Conant was a member of the AMVETS Post 11 and the Eskimo Chapter of the NY State Camping Club. She enjoyed fishing in the Oswegatchie River and camping.

Surviving are his parents, Brad and Meg Aldous, two brothers; Nathan Bradford, age 4, Ryan Charles, age 2, his maternal grandparents, Harold “Hal” and Sue Bullock, Canton, paternal grandparents, Everett and Janet Aldous, Canton, maternal great grandmother, Emma Rose, Canton, paternal great grandmother, Mary Aldous, Canton, three uncles; Glenn Bullock and wife Shelia, Canton, Joe Bullock, Canton, Everett Aldous, Taiwan, three aunts; Amy Bortnick and her husband Chip, Beth Larrabee and her husband Rob, all of Canton, Penny LaClair, Laguna Nigel, Ca. and cousins. Master Aldous was Baptized on May 31, 2003 at St, Mary’s Church in Canton.
William W. Fuller, 97, 42 Stone Meadow Drive, Bridgewater, Massachusetts, died Friday November 28, 2003 at Braemoor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brockton, Mass. The funeral will be at 12:15 pm, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Fair View Cemetery in Canton. Calling hours will be Tuesday morning from 10:00 until 12:00 noon. Surviving Mr. Fuller is his wife, Louise, of Bridgewater, Mass; a daughter, Elizabeth “Liz” Fuller and her husband, Robert Jiovanoni, of Bridgewater. Mr. Fuller was predeceased by a daughter, shortly after her birth in 1942. Born on March 9, 1906 in Canton, New York, a son of Charles I. Fuller and Mary Rexford, he graduated from Canton High School in 1924 as the class Valedictorian. He later went on to graduate from Clarkson University with a major in Civil Engineering in 1928. He married Louise Rexford at the Methodist Church Parsonage on August 22, 1936, in North Bangor, New York. Upon graduating from Clarkson, Mr. Fuller worked for US Steel in New York City as a bridge designer in the American Bridge Division for over thirty years; In New York State, he was a certified professional engineer. He and his wife lived in Cranford, New Jersey for many years. Together, they later moved to Bridgewater, Mass. in 1990 to be closer to their daughter. Mr. Fuller was a member of The St. Lawrence Lodge F & AM #111. His Grandfather, Rev. Whitfield, was the first pastor of the Free Association Church of Pierrepont.
Ronald W. "Ronnie" Weekes, 79, 236 Judson Street Road, Canton, died Tuesday January 27, 2004 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. The funeral will be Monday February 2, 2004, at the St. Mary's Church Canton.
Burial will be in New Boston Cemetery in Barnes Corners in the spring. Mr. Weekes died Tuesday evening at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, where he had been a patient since Friday night. Calling hours will be Sunday afternoon and evening 2-4 and 6-8 at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton, where the Canton Fire Department will meet at 7:00 Sunday evening and the Gouverneur Elks Club will hold a service at 7:30. Surviving are his wife Elaine, three sons and daughters-in-law; Marshall and Dixie, Canton, John and Phyllis, Geneva, George and Janet, Bowoinhan, Maine, five grandchildren, Jeffrey Weekes, Canton, Mrs. George (Jennifer) Kimble, Canton, Karen Weekes, Canton, Julia Weekes, Massena, Brandon Weekes, Maine, one sister; Genevieve Rupert, Carthage, twelve (12) great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mr. Weekes are two sons Joseph and Fredrick and one brother James. Born on June 29, 1924 in Harrisville, he was a son of William Leslie and Maude Maybee Weekes and attended West Carthage Schools. On July 24, 1943, he married Elaine Marie LaJoy in St. James Church in Carthage. Mr. Weekes served in the National Guard, before moving to West Main Street in Canton in the early 1950’s. He first worked on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, then worked part-time for Frank Mace at Mace Motors. He then went to work with “Red” Curtis, before he started his own business in the early 1960’s. Mr. Weekes ran the Chevron Gas Station on East Main Street, had a body shop on the Judson Street Road and did driveway and parking lot snow plowing. Then in the later 1960’s he obtained the Polaris Snowmobile Dealership which he operated out of the Chevron Station, until he moved it to the site of his home on the Judson Street Road. He continued to run the business and expanded it to include ATV’s, snow removal and lawn mowing equipment, until his death, with his son Marshall and his grandson Jeffrey. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member for 24 years of the Clear Pond Club in the town of Clare. He also was a founding member of the Canton Sportsman’s Club, where he was an instrumental leader in the building of the Building and served as president. An Exempt Member of the Canton Fire Department, Mr. Weekes recognized the inadequate building conditions at the Court Street Fire Station and was very proud to be the first independent business person to make a major contribution to the “Friends of the New Canton Fire Station”. Mr. Weekes was one of the honored people to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony with a gold shovel given by the Fire Department and the “Friends” Committee. Mr. Weekes was both a Charter and a Life Member of the Gouverneur Elks Club. He also sponsored a Pee Wee Baseball Team and Dick Woodley’s Race Car.
Bettie V. Gilson, 80, 35 Riverside Drive, died January 21, 2004 at home. The funeral will be Friday January 23, 2004 at 11:00am, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Brick Chapel Cemetery in the spring. Mrs. Gilson died early Wednesday morning at her home under the care of her family and Hospice. The Canton Fire Department will meet at 6:30 and the VFW Ladies Auxillary Post 1231 will meet at 7:30 at the Funeral Home, Thursday evening. Richards, North Bend, OR, Sheila Gilson, Germany, Tina Todd, Canton, fourty (40) grandchildren,; fourty-two (42) great-grand children; two great-great grandchildren, four brothers and their wives, Howard and Joan Matthews, Princeton, IL, Harold and Joanne Matthews, Sherrill, Roland and Shirley Matthews, Canton, Duane and Barbara Matthews, Rensselaer Falls; two sisters Alice Blackmer and Ellen Janack, both of Canton and several nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mrs. Gilson is a daughter Beatrice Mace, a great-grandson, Gregory Shawn Laddison, and one brother Merton Matthews. Born June 17, 1923 in Canton she was a daughter of Harold James and Olive Mary Moore Matthews and attended Canton Area Schools. On June 28, 1941, she married Donald Raymond Gilson at the home of her parents. Mr. Gilson died December 16, 1985. The couple ran a dairy farm on the Pink Schoolhouse Road. Mrs. Gilson enjoyed gardening, sewing and baking. She was a very active member of the VFW Post 1231 Ladies Auxillary, for 18 years, where she was awarded both the Betty Hammond and meritorious awards. An active community volunteer for many groups and organizations including the Grasse River High-Rise community, she also made several dozen blankets for the “Binky Patrol”.
