James N. "Jim" Votra, 48, 1734 US 9W, Selkirk and formerly of 104 Miner Street, Canton, died on January 4, 2004 at his home. The funeral will be January 8, 2004 at 11:00, at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton.

Surviving are his parents, Elmer and Norreen Votra, Canton, his fiancée Gina Ryan, Selkirk; three sons, James and his wife Christina, Petersburg, NY, Shawn and his wife Carrie, and Dana R. both of Hoosick Falls,, one daughter, Lindsay Conant, Pa., three grandchildren,; one brother, Stephen E., Heuvelton; four sisters, Donna Mattice and her husband, David, Morley,, Robin Votra-Dafoe and her husband William, Canton, Tammy R. Brown and her husband Michael, Canton, Mary Jankiewicz, Camillus and several nieces and nephews. Born in Canton on June 3, 1955, he was a son of Elmer Nelson and Norreen Grace Andrews Votra and attended Canton High School. While in high school he was on the wrestling team, played football and baseball. During the 1970’s Mr. Votra worked at Kraft Foods in Canton. Then he went to work at the P & C Food Store in Canton until the early 1990’s. Mr. Votra moved to the Albany area where he worked as a mechanic and forklift operator at the Cargill Flour Mills at the Port of Albany until his death. An avid singer, he sang in the band “FireBurst”.
Charles E. Urban, 80, 9 State Street, Canton and Flagler Beach, Florida, died on January 10, 2004 at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home in Canton. The funeral will be Tuesday January 13, 2004 at 2:30, at the chapel at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home.
Burial will be in the spring at Elmwood Cemetery in Adams. Mr. Urban died under the care of his family and Hospice, Saturday afternoon at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since March 16, 2001. Surviving Mr. Urban are a daughter, Suzanne C. Urban, Ogdensburg,; a son, Charles D. Urban, Winter Park, Florida and formerly of Canton,; a very close cousin, Sally Wise, Gurnee, Illinois,; one brother Stanley J. Urban, Newburgh, and nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mr. Urban are two sisters Vera Kowalewski and Barbara Chute. Born April 3, 1923 in Port Chester, NY, he was a son of Stanley Jerome and Mary Alice Morgan Urban. While a teenager in the Westchester County area, he delivered newspapers and one of his customers was Ed Sullivan. Also, during the summers, he traveled by train around the country to help exercise polo ponies. May 2, 1948, he married Eunice Ann Parker at the home of his bride’s grandmother Anna Richardson in Ellisburg with Rev. O.T. Anderson, officiating. Mrs. Urban died July 8, 2001. The day after Pearl Harbor was struck, Mr. Urban enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II and then again in the Korean Conflict. After the World War II service, he received his GED. In 1974 and 1975, he earned two Associate Degrees in Applied Science from Canton ATC, while he was 51 and 52. In 1954, the couple moved to Canton, where Mr. Urban was manager of the Market Basket, and then opened up the Acme Market on Court Street in the late 1950’s. He became store manager for the Acme in Malone from 1959-1963. He later worked as purchasing agent and head of maintenance at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone. In 1967, Mr. Urban began work at Canton ATC as a senior stores clerk. He retired from SUNY Canton in 1985. As a retiree, Mr. Urban became very active in the Boy Scouts of America as a volunteer in the Seaway Valley Council and received the Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver Award in 1986. A former member of the Malone Elks Club and the Canton Rotary Club, he also served as President of the CSEA at SUNY Canton.
Alice C. Rogers, 82, United Helpers Nursing Home, Canton, died . The funeral will be December 24, 2003, at the First Prebyterian Church of Canton.

Rogers, Clifton Park,; three grandchildren, Jessica E. and Thomas A. Rogers, both of Potsdam, and Elizabeth C. Rogers, Clifton Park. Predeceasing Mrs. Rogers is a sister Phyllis Seaton, who died in 2002. Born in Belfast, Ireland on November 29, 1921, she was a daughter of Thomas Shellington and Mary Jane Jobes Cowan. After graduating from Brockville, Ontario in 1940, she then graduated from Brockville Business College in 1942. On September 20, 1947, she married Robert T. Rogers in the Brockville (Ontario) Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Rogers worked as a secretary for Philips Electrical Company in Brockville, until she married at which time the couple moved to Albany, then to Rome, NY, before moving to Canton in January 1954. The couple lived on East Main Street until they moved to Long Island in 1972. For 14 years the family owned a summer home on the St. Lawrence River in Morristown. In 1979, they moved back to Northern New York to live in Hannawa Falls. Recent illness had forced Mrs. Rogers to become a patient at Community Nursing Home and United Helpers Canton Nursing Home. In the mid to late 1960’s she and her husband returned to her beloved Ireland to visit relatives. Mrs. Rogers was an avid golfer and a long time member of the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club. She was also a member of the PEO Sorority and served First Presbyterian Church Session for a number of years.
Margaret L. Pierce, 87, 1225 County Route 35, Canton, died on Friday, April 9, 2004 at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home. The funeral will be Monday, April 12, 2004 at 10:00am, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Pierce , 65 Academy Street, Mexico, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one sister Edra Pierce, Riverside, Cal., and several nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mrs. Pierce are one grandson L. Steven Pierce, who died in March 1987, two brothers, Francis and John Briggs, two sisters, Mary and Pauline, and one daughter-in-law Susan, who died in January 2002. Born in the Town of Pierrepont on August 23, 1916, she was a daughter of Victor Ivan and Lillian Lydia Anderson Briggs. She graduated from Pierrepont Rural Schools and attended Potsdam High School. On February 22, 1936, she married Lee A. Pierce in Potsdam. Mr. Pierce died November 9, 2000. The couple lived in the Norwood area for many years, where Mrs. Pierce was a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the Lyra Chapter #230, Order of the Eastern Star in Norwood. Mrs. Pierce worked during the mid 1950’s until the early 1960’s at the Potsdam P and C Market as a cashier. In 1967, the couple moved to West Potsdam to the new home they had built. Mr. Pierce worked at Alcoa for over twenty five years. Mrs. Pierce was an avid flower gardener.

Predeceasing Mr. Taylor are one son Steven J. who died January 23, 2004, who died of an aortic aneurysm, two brothers Glenn and Kenneth Taylor and one sister Hazel Tupper. Born on January 19, 1920, on a farm in Pierrepont, he was a son of Orra Cecil and Florence Alma Briggs Taylor and graduated from Canton High School. He later attended Albany Technical Institute. On August 18, 1951, he married AnnaMae Thomas of Villa Park, Illinois at the Canton United Methodist Church, with Rev. Charles Williams, officiating. From March 22, 1944 until October 26, 1945, Staff Sergeant Taylor served in the United States Army Air Corp as a Tail gunner flying on the B-42’s, during World War II. For over forty years he worked in the milk and whey industry in Canton, Chateaugay, Heuvelton, and Canada. After that he enjoyed being a trusted handyman for many longtime Canton residents. An avid gardener, he ran a vegetable garden for his family and others for many years. Mr. Taylor loved the outdoors, farming and had also been active in the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club.
Raymond Marschat, 81, Highland Nursing Home, Massena, died on March 5, 2004 at Massena Memorial Hospital in Massena. The funeral will be , at the Graveside services in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery, Canton.

Surviving is his wife Sylvia of Highland Nursing Home, Massena. Born October 19, 1922, in New York City, the son of Stanley and Mary Rorach Marschat. Mr. Marschat attended school in Cannon, Conn. Mr. Marschat married Sylvia Sondri on April 24, 1952 at the Hermon Rectory. The couple moved to the Pierrepont area and ran a dairy farm until 1972 when the couple moved to the Morrell Road in Pierrepont. There they ran a farm until 1983 when the couple retired. The couple moved from the Morrell Road in 1999 when sickness forced the couple to move to a nursing home.

Predeceasing Mrs. Hall are two sons, Gar Hall, who died in 1987 and Robert who died in 1996. Born in Gouverneur on November 2, 1914, she was the daughter of Dr. Charles P. and E. Blanche Allen Henderson and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1931. In 1936, she graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Nursing. On February 21, 1937, she married E. Calvin Hall, DVM, at the home of her parents in Gouverneur. Dr. Hall died on December 27, 1965. During the late 1930’s Mrs. Hall worked at Potsdam Hospital as a registered nurse. She also worked as a volunteer for blood drives for the American Red Cross. Mrs. Hall worked with her husband in the veterinarian practice for many years, until Dr. Hall died in an automobile crash. The couple lived and ran the vet practice on 15 State Street and then Mrs. Hall moved to 47 Spears Street. She moved to Colorado Springs to be near her grandchildren in June of 2001. Mrs. Hall was a former member of the Canton Club, the St. Lawrence University Golf and Country Club, and Women’s International Bowling Congress.
Thomas L. Finch, 77, College Street, Canton, died Thursday December 18, 2003. The funeral will be Monday December 22, 2003 at 2:00, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church.

Surviving are his wife Frances, one step-daughter, Kathryn and her husband, John “Jack” O’Gorman, Cincinnati, Ohio; one step-son Douglas Chilson, Cambridge, Mass.; one grandchild, two nephews, Anthony Finch, Madison, Wisc. And David Finch, Corvallis, Ore. Predeceasing Mr. Finch is one brother John, who died in 1988. On June 7, 1980, he married Frances Kathryn Low Chilson at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, with Rev. Max A. Coots, officiating. Born November 26, 1926 in Madison, Wisconsin, he was a son of Vernor Clifford and Louise Lassford Finch and graduated from Wisconsin High School in 1945. In 1954 he received his bachelor’s and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Wisconsin. After two years of teaching at Union College in Schnectedy, Dr. Finch joined the faculty at St. Lawrence University in 1957 and was professor of physics until his retirement in 1989. He was interested in musical acoustics and did research on pipe organ acoustics with Arthur Benade at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and with Wilson Noelle at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Dr. Finch was an accomplished organist, and served as organist of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Canton from 1963 to 1989. He pursued a life-long interest in historic pipe organs, serving eight years as a vice president of the Organ Historical Society. He was presented with the Society’s Distinguished Service award in 1990. He attended 45 of the Society’s annual conventions, which are held in different parts of the country to feature area distinguished organs. In 1970 he organized one of the conventions here in the North Country, with Canton as the base. In recent years he and his wife added European tours to visit organs, including France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, and most recently Sweden.
Phillip L. Rexford, 78, 1759 County Route 25, died December 11, 2003. The funeral will be convenience of the family, at the Pierrepont Hill Cemetery.

The couple also raised a grandson, Max “Punky” Jr.; two Brothers, Frederick, of Canton and Lakeland Florida, and Sidney of Colton, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mr. Rexford was born October 7, 1925 in South Colton, the son of Lee A. Rexford and Georgea Phillips. He enlisted in the US Navy while a senior at Colton Pierrepont Central School serving in the US Navy from December 29, 1943 until he was Honorably Discharged on May 4, 1946 obtaining the rank of Fire Control man third class. He was a recipient of the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal. He returned to Colton in 1946 to complete his senior year of high school and graduated from Colton-Pierrepont Central School with the Class of 1947. Mr. Rexford was married to Ruby M. Steen at the Canton United Methodist Church on April 22, 1948 with the Rev. Dobbie officiating. After graduation, Mr. Rexford was employed by Beth Gibbo at the Canton Grand Union and in the early 1950’s he and his father began the Rexford Saw Mill and then ran his own Sand and Gravel business. In 1962, he was appointed Town of Canton Highway Superintendent, a position Mr. Rexford was later elected to until his retirement in 1983. He then pursued his hobbies of making early American replicated furniture as well as carving and painting birds and figurines and did bead work. He also was owner of a gun shop during a ten year period in the 1960’s and early 1970’s., while enjoying muzzle loading and pistol shooting. Mr. Rexford was a former member of the F & AM lodge 111 of Canton.

Born on November 18, 1903 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Harry and Freda Woehler Browne. Ms. Browne graduated from Canton High School in 1921 and the Crane School of Music in Potsdam in 1925, where she majored in piano; her teacher was Helen Hosmer. At the age of two, the family moved from Brooklyn, to 2 Church Street in Canton. The home offered a vista on various people visiting on the street-such as Kim Gannon (author of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”), the Mother and son (Kirk Douglas-given name was Isadore Dempskey) and Tony Bennett, who also visited the house. Her father, Harry Browne had a meat market and grocery store on Main Street for 40 years. At the early age of five, Ethel contracted polio which left her wearing braces for the rest of her life. After graduating from Crane, she taught piano in her home until the late 1960’s for as many as 30 students a week. She also had roomers from St. Lawrence University and Canton ATI, now SUNY Canton. At the time of her death she was the oldest living member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.
Marianne J. Wennrich, 58, 24 Goodrich Street, Canton, died Friday, December 16,2005 in Canton. The funeral will be Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at 12:00, noon, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton.

Born April 4, 1947 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of Francis and Alba Pezzulo Angelo and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Glens Falls in1965. In 1968, she graduated from Champlain Valley School of Nursing in Plattsburgh, then earned her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1973. On April 19, 1969, she married Timothy W. Wennrich at St. Assumption Church in Glens Falls. Mrs. Wennrich served as a Nurse in the United States Air Force from July 2, 1969, until she was Honorably Discharged as a First Lieutenant on July 31, 1970. After serving in the Air Force, she worked as a Registered Nurse of various organizations and businesses for 30 years. The couple moved to Canton, where Mrs. Wennrich became very active at the Banford Elementary School and helped initiate the Science Fair. They owned and operated the Bagel Depot on 109 Main Street from 1990-2000. She served as a Den Mother in Cub Scouts and served as a Boy Scout Leader. Mrs. Wennrich served on the Canton Democratic Committee, was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, the Canton Garden Club and worked with the local Habitat for Humanity organization. Mrs. Wennrich met daily with a women’s running club and several times a week with the Canton “Tea Ladies”. An avid outdoors person, she enjoyed hiking and canoeing.
Iris May Sayer Cote, 88, 37 Riverside Drive, Canton, died on December 12, 2005 at her home. The funeral will be December 15, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.

Surviving are her daughters, Barbara Johnson of Honeoye, NY and Claudine Smith and husband Michael, DVM of Potsdam; two brothers, Robert and Wendell Sayer; one daughter-in-law, Katy Cote of Penfield, NY; 13 grandchildren, Christopher, Scott and Dale Cote and Diane Nacci, Eric, Curt and David Johnson, Guy and Tadd Mitchell and Stephanie Westbrooke; Claudett Rekedal, Pauline Roche and Travis Phillips; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman Cote, Sr. ;a son, Norman Cote, Jr. and a daughter, JoAnn Mitchell. She also had two brothers, Burton and Ronald Bill Sayer die in WWII. Born June 3, 1917, in Brier Hill, NY, she was a daughter of the late Frank B. and Claudia May Weatherup Sayer. She was a graduate of Brier Hill High School. While living in Brier Hill she was business manager for the family dairy farm from 1963 - 75. After the farm was sold she and her father purchased the Brier Hill Laundromat. Mrs. Cote married Norman Louis Cote on November 2, 1946 in Rochester, NY. While in the Rochester area she worked for KODAK. Prior to moving to Canton four years ago she lived in the Centennial Terrace in Ogdensburg and prior to that she owned a home in Brier Hill. She was a past member of the Brier Hill Firemans Auxillary. She also actively sewed and and liked knitting x-mas stockings and other gifts for family and friends.

Carl G. Sauter, 86, of 37 Riverside Drive, Canton and Bonita Springs, FL, died Monday, November 21, 2005, at his Canton home. Born February 26, 1919, in Nyack, NY, he was a son of the late Andrew and Monica Sauter. He was a graduate of Nyack High School, class of 1935 and N.Y.U. in 1939 with Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. Mr. Sauter spent his working years at A. Sauter Company Wholesale Florists on 6th Avenue in New York City with his father, three brothers and cousins. He was veteran of the US ARMY serving with the 367th Field Artillery Battalion, where he was stationed in Hawaii and Japan during the war years. On February 12, 1949 he married Helen P. Sauter at the St. Ann’s Church in Nyack. The couple moved to Front Street in Upper Nyack where his many hobbies included HAM Radio(WB2AMO), wooden boat building, fishing, gardening, crossword puzzles, computer games, reading and just relaxing. Mr. and Mrs. Sauter became “snowbirds” in 1984 after his retirement, spending half their time in Bonita Springs, Florida. They began spending their summers in Canton, NY in 2002. Mrs. Sauter died March 16, 2003. Surviving are one son, Robert Sauter “Radio Bob”and wife Jackie; two grandchildren, Steven and Michael Sauter, all of Canton; five nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by his wife and three brothers, Henry, William and Andrew. There will be a private graveside service in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack, NY at a later date. Frederick W. "Bud" Wilson, 67, 338 County Route 11, West Monroe, and formerly of Canton, died on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at his home in West Monroe. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at the convenience of the family, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Canton. Calling hours will also be at the convenience of the family. If friends desire contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice. Surviving are one brother, Roy Orin Wilson, Potsdam, 3 sisters Myrtle W. Dafoe Butterfield, Canton, Viola M. Corner, Elmira and Constance L. Busco ,Liverpool . He is predeceased by a sister, Mary Wilson who died in 1985. Born May 16, 1938 the son of Orin William Wilson and Beulah Mae Hubbard, he attended Canton High School and achieved his GED while serving in the Air Force. He enlisted in the air force in 1959 and was honorably discharged on June 15, 1967 from the Edwards Air Force Base, California as a Rocket Propulsion Laboratory specialist. Mr. Wilson came back to Canton after his enlistment in the U.S. Air Force and worked at the Canton IGA, later worked at Don Place Meat Market as a meat cutter, he then moved to Syracuse area where he worked as a supervisor at several apartment buildings and later went to work at St. Joseph Hospital in Syracuse for nearly 15 years retiring in 2003. Norene A. Noble, 70, 801 Racquette Road, Potsdam and formerly of Canton, died on Saturday November 19, 2005 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam. The funeral will be Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at the convenience of the family, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Parishville, New York . Calling hours will be Tuesday afternoon and evening 2-4 and 7-9 at the Lawrence Funeral Home. Noble and her companion Martin Myers, Canton, MI, eleven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by three brothers George, Resart, and Milford Watson and two sisters Patricia Rockwood and Ruth Richards. Born on August 18, 1935, the daughter of Clayton H. Watson and Hannah E. Clement, she attended Parishville-Hopkinton School and later took her High School Equilventicy Test. From the mid to late 1980’s Mrs. Noble was a cook for Bishop Brzana at the Diocese of Ogdensburg. A healthcare worker, she worked as a Certified Nurses Aid at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home until retiring in the mid 1990’s she was a past member of the 4-H Club in Parishville. Ruth E. Williamson, 82, 40 West Main Street, Canton, died on November 4, 2005 at UHCNH. The funeral will be November 7, 2005 at 4:00 PM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 7, 2005 at 4 pm at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton, NY, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2005, at 2:00 PM in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY. Surviving are her two daughters, Margaret Nordberg and husband Dr. Robert of Canton, NY and Joan Volpe and husband Robert of Cary, NC; a sister, June Messer of Hilton Head, SC; nine grandchildren; a son-in-law, Edward Fox of Kansas City, KS; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Schwab of Hilton Head, SC. She was predeceased by her husband, John E. Williamson, who died October 5, 2005 and a daughter, Elizabeth Fox who died in 2003. Born on August 10, 1923, in Mt. Vernon, NY, she was a daughter of the late William Beattie and Astrid Moe Messer, she graduated from Pelham, NY High School in 1941 and later from the Katherine Gibbs SecretCourier School in New York City. On April 1, 1945 she married John E. Williamson with Rev. William C.J. Weidt officiating in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard in Mt. Vernon, NY. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Williamson was employed as a secretary for Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. and later with American Airlines. She was also involved with volunteer work thru the Northern Westchester Hospital and thru the Hilton Head Regional Hospital. She also taught Sunday School for 30 years in Mt. Kisco at the Hillside Church. She was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church and the Community Bible Study Group. Mrs. Williamson was also a great cook and a avid gardener. The couple moved to Hilton Head, SC in the early 1990’s and then moved to Canton, NY in November 2004, due to declining health, to be near their daughter andson-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Nordberg.
