Margaret B. Maybee, 97, 37 Riverside Drive and formerly of 43 Gouverneur Street, Canton, died October 19, 2005 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam. The funeral will be Monday October 24, 2005 at 11:00, at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Maybee died Wednesday afternoon, October 19, 2005, at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Predeceasing Mrs. Maybee are two brothers Irwin and Glen, two sisters Mary Watson and Helen Williams and one great-great grandson, Ryan Scott Gaines. Born on July 13, 1908 in the town of Potsdam, she was a daughter of Albert Edward and Cora Beckwith Buffham. After graduating Salutatorian at Madrid High School in 1925, she attended Potsdam Normal School. On September 3, 1926, she married Nelson Arthur Maybee in Norwood with the Justice of the Peace, officiating. Mr. Maybee died December 31, 1961. During World War II, Mrs. Maybee worked at her husbands business, J.H. Maybee and Sons, a coal and lumber business in Canton. She later worked at the Queensboro Milk Plant in Canton. Then in the early 1970’s, she was the bookkeeper at Bellinger Roofing where she continued to work until her health forced her to retire in the early 1990’s. Mrs. Maybee was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and acted as secretary for the Silas Wright Grange in Canton for over 50 years. For many years she served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Evergreen Cemetery in Canton. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, she was an avid golfer and past member of the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club, bowled in various bowling leagues at Gray Lanes in Canton and enjoyed playing Bridge. James M. Hull, 87, Grove Street, Gouverneur, died on October 9, 2005 at EJ Noble Hospital in Gouverneur. The funeral will be October 12, 2005 at 11:00 AM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Laura Cryderman of Manassas, VA ; a sister, Marion Hull Venton Antonelli of Chaumont; a companion of several years, Julanne Alt of Gouverneur; 8 nieces and nephews and a cousin, Winifred Hull Wagner. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, who died in 1989, his daughter, Linda Hull, who died in 1985 and a sister, Marguerite Hull Reamare Mocumber. Born February 2, 1918, in Canton, NY, he was a son of the late Ivan and Elsie Higgins Hull. He attended schools in Canton and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1938. He married Helen E. Scott, daughter of Herbert and Alice Scott of Hammond in 1940. Later that year he joined the war effort and was employed in the aircraft industry in Buffalo and remained there until the wars end. For several years he worked for Rushmore Paper on Prospect Street in Gouverneur in the Maintenance Department. In 1951, the Hull’s purchased their first “Trotting Horse” and in 1956 went into horse racing full-time. Mr. Hull was active in horse racing from Florida to Canada. They purchased land in Canton in 1968 and built a home and “Standard-Bred” training center. He was a member of the United States Trotting Assoc. and was a well-known and respected Horseman. At area Fair’s he was routinely asked to be a Timer for the races, as well as, a trophy presenter. Mr. Hull retired in 1981 and lived in Canton until his wife’s death in 1989. The remaining years of his life he spent his winters in Hawkinsville, GA training horses and his summers in the North Country.

Mr. Williamson was predeceased by a daughter Elizabeth Fox, who died in 2003. Born July 2, 1921, in Bronx, NY, he was a son of the late Harold Everett and Grace Gould Thompson Williamson. He was a 1939 graduate of AB Davis High School in Mt. Vernon, NY. He was employed by the Chemical Bank and Trust Co. in New York City from 1940 to 1943, leaving there to enter the United States Army Air Force. Later he studied at the American Institute of Banking and graduated from Columbia University in 1943. Mr. Williamson was a member of the 1963 graduating class of the Graduate School of Savings Banking at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Mr. Williamson was a veteran of the Army Air Force serving as a B-17 Pilot in the Eighth Air Force in England and flew 35 missions during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Then in 1945, Mr. Williamson went to work at Eastchester Savings Bank in Mount Kisco. Mr. Williamson retired from Eastchester Savings Bank as President in 1989. He continued to serve as a Trustee on the Board of Directors for a few years more. On April 1, 1945 he married Ruth Phemia Messer, with Rev. William C. J. Weidt in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard in Mt. Vernon. The couple moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina in early 1990’s and then moved to Canton in November 2004, due to declining health, to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Nordberg. Mr. Williamson was a past member of the Advisory Board of the Mount Vernon Salvation Army, worked with the United Way of Westchester County, the Westchester Country Club, the Rotary Club in Mount Vernon, and the Band Leader in the Williams Band in the Greater New York City area.

Born on June 9, 1925 in Sidney, NY, he was the son of Richard Harold and Maude Knapp Dunne and graduated from Sidney High School in 1943. After serving in the Armed Forces after high school, Mr. Dunne graduated from Alfred University in 1949 and then earned his Masters in Education in 1950 from Alfred. He later took courses at Syracuse University, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Potsdam. On August 26, 1950 he married Hannelore “Lori” Bremser at the Congregational Church in Sidney. Mr. Dunne held various teaching, supervisory and administrative positions throughout New York State and was also a teacher and administrator at Exxons School in Aruba from 1954-1959. Then in 1960-1968, he worked as an administrator and served as Curriculum Coordinator at Norwood-Norfolk Central School. In 1968, Mr. Dunne started teaching History at SUNY Canton. He retired as a full professor in 1985. After retirement, Mr. Dunne enjoyed working with his flower and vegetable gardens and woodworking. Mr. Dunne was a member of the UUP, the United University Professor, and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. He was a past member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Jeffery B. Burke, 48, 5908 CR 27, Canton, died on September 3, 2005 at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville. The funeral will be Friday, September 9, 2005, at the Canton United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Burke, Meridian, Idaho, two sons, Loyd James Burke and his wife Apryl, Belgrade, Montana, Thomas “Tom” LaBrake II, Canton, one daughter, Heather Anne Burke, Houston, Texas, his mother-in-law, Jean Cornell, Canton, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jyl Adams, and her husband Randall, Boise, Idaho, Jacque Matthews and her husband David, Las Vegas, Nevada, three nieces and one nephew. Born on December 2, 1956 in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of James Eflin and Maudie Mae Dearlove Burke. After graduating from Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1974, he completed two years of college at the Community College of South Nevada. On November 22, 2000, he married Ellen Cornell LaBrake in Flint, Michigan. Mrs. Burke died July 13, 2005. On January 6, 1976, Mr. Burke entered the United States Air Force and served as an aircraft structural maintenance technician and then a vehicle operations supervisor. He was discharged from the military on August 31, 1992. Mr. Burke served in Operation Desert Storm. After serving in the military, Mr. Burke worked as a Civil Service Employee at Yermo Marine Corp Base in California. From 1997 early 2000, he worked at Barrick Gold Strike Mine in Elko, Nevada, where he operated and maintained a haul truck. In late 2000, he moved to Canton and worked at Waste Stream Management. For the past year and one-half, Mr. Burke worked as a supply technician at the Clarkson University ROTC program. Mr. Burke was a member of the Edward C. Seymour Post 1231, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Canton, a member of the Canton United Methodist Church and a member and Secretary of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club USA, Chapter N, Northern New York, Canada, and Vermont. He was a past member of the Checker Pit Club; a club of off road races in Southern California.

She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren. Born September 6, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late Hartley and Dorothy Willis Gardner. Mrs. Parker grew up in the Boston area and graduated from Newton High School. On May 23, 1942, she married Francis D. Parker in Boston, Mass. After WWII, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio until 1951 when they moved to Canton, NY. While in the Canton area she was active in the academic community as well as the farming community. In 1957, she moved to College, Alaska where they lived for six years. She and her husband also lived on Grand Island, NY for three years before returning to Canton in 1966. She lived on the Canton-Russell Road until moving to Partridge Knoll in 1999. While working, she was a secretary and also a receptionist for St. Lawrence University’s Health Center, but mostly she enjoyed the role of homemaker. Mrs. Parker’s interests and activities included the outdoors and wildlife, bird watching , knitting painting, flowers and travel. She was also involved with the cub scouts and was a den mother at one time. She also did a good bit of volunteer work where she saw fit.

She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Peters was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond, Ralph and Chester Moore. Born May 12, 1920, in Canton, she was a daughter of the late Rollin and Myrtle Hendricks Moore. She was a graduate of Canton High School and the Watertown School of Commerce. Mrs. Peters later took Real Estate Classes at Canton A.T.C. as well as H&R Block Income Tax Awareness training. Mrs. Peters was married to James J. Finnegan on February 8, 1941 in Canton, NY. Mr. Finnegan died in WWII as a POW. She later married Alton K. Peters on Sept. 22, 1945, in Ithaca, NY. Mr. Peters died in 1996. She was employed as a Legal Secretary for Attorney Sydney Kitay in Canton and also was a Real Estate Broker with United Farm Agency from 1978- 1982 and was owner/operator of Peters Mobile Home Park from 1955 to 1977. Mrs. Peters also did volunteer work for the Office of the Aging. She was also involved with the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s International Bowling Congress, where she was Secretary and Delegate to the State Convention Bowling Assoc. for 5 years.

Born June 12, 1925 to Sumner and Charlotte Cornell Pierce on the family homestead on Route 11, Potsdam, he attended area rural schools and graduated from Potsdam High School in 1943. He married Anna Van Hyning Woods on April 26, 1975 . She died April 29, 1992. Then on January 1, 1993 he married Alberta LaDue Crotty at the home of Margaret Hance in Rensselaer Falls by Effie Stiles. After graduating from high school, he immediately went to work on the family dairy farm. He ran the farm until he retired in late 1979 but continued the Maple Sugar Bush portion of the business on the family property even through this past spring. The couple also owned and operated Pierce Homestead Bed and Breakfast for the past 12 years. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s he served as a legislator on the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators, where he was on the Highway Committee.
Winifred "Fredi" Free, 74, 4746 SH 68, Canton, died on Sunday July 17, 2005 at her home. The funeral will be Thursday, July 21, 2005, at the St. Johns Episcopal Church, 500 Caroline Street, Ogdensburg.

Predeceasing Ms. Free was a brother, Roger Free who died August of 1995. Born April 26, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY, she was a daughter of the late Montague and Maude Laura Hickek Free. She attended Roosevelt Hight School in Hyde Park and gradutated from the Univeristy of Vermont, Burlington, in 1952 with a degree in psychology. In 1957 she received a master of education degree from New Paltz University College and she attended Albany State University Library School. From 1952-1953, she was the assistant to the librarian at Vassar College Library in Poughkeepsie then taught first grade in Utica and Hyde Park schools unitl 1958. After working as a civilian teacher in the United States Air Force in Germany, North Africa and Libya from 1958-1960, she returned to southern New York State to teach near New Paltz for a short time. She was then appointed assistant librarian for Canton Agricultural and Technichal Institute in 1962. Ms. Free taught pre-first, first and second grade at Canton Elementary School until she retired in June 1986. A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ogdensburg, she served on the Alter Guild and was a member of the Church Vestry. She was also a member of the Daughter of the Kings. She was a dog obedience instructor, and owned and operated the Regency Shelties, a kennel at her home and was a member of the St. Lawrence Valley Kennel Club.
Ellen Jean Burke, 45, 5908 CR 27, Canton, died on July 13, 2005 enroute to a Billings, Montana medical center in a medical helicopter. She had earlier been a passenger on a motorcycle in which the rear tire blew out causing her to eventually be ejected from the bike.. The funeral will be July 19, 2005 at 11:00 am, at the Canton United Methodist Church.

She graduated from Canton High School in 1978 and later graduated from Miami, Florida Travel School. On November 22, 2000, she married Jeffrey Bruce Burke in Burton, Michigan with Judge Richard L. Hughes, officiating. A prior marriage to Thomas J. LaBrake ended in divorce. After working as a secretary at Styles Bridges Associates, she worked as a travel agent with World Wide Travel in Massena and Potsdam. In the spring of 1988, Mrs. Burke went to work at Clarkson University at the Andrew Schuler (sp?) Human Resource Center, then in 1999 transferred to the United States Air Force ROTC Program to be the Executive Secretary. Recently she had received the Outstanding Civilian Employee for the Quarter Award for Cadet Command from the United States Air Force. Mrs. Burke was a member of the Canton United Methodist Church, where she served as a trustee and sang in the choir. She was awarded an honor from the Potsdam Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. Her memberships also included the VFW Auxiliary Edward C. Seymour Post 1231 and the North Country Fiddlers Association since the age of 15. Mrs. Burke was a former member of the Potsdam Kiwanis Club.
Leo James McCuen, 63, 236 Church Road, Potsdam, died on July 4, 2005 at Canton Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam. The funeral will be Friday, July 8, 2005 at 1:00 pm, at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Bohnet. Born August 6, 1941, in the town of Potsdam, he was a son of the late Roy John and Ruby Blanche Castleman McCuen. Mr. McCuen assisted in the running of the family dairy farm on Church Road in the town of Pierrepont. He was an equipment operator for the town of Pierrepont Highway Dept. for 18 years. Then he was appointed Superintendent for a short time after the death of Lawrence Tupper. He later worked for St. Lawrence County SWDA until illness forced him to retire in 1997. He was a member of the NRA; AARP; and a past member of the Shanty Hill Hunting Club.

Mrs. Aldous was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Robinson and a Great-Grandson, Drew Aldous who died in 2003. Born June 4, 1925, in Pyrites, NY, she was a daughter of the late Millard Mason and Gladys Ivyviolet Edwards France. She graduated from Colton High School in 1941 and attended Potsdam Normal School. Mrs. Aldous married Kenneth Everett Aldous, June 4, 1945 at the Canton United Methodist Church Parsonage, with Rev. Dobbie, officiating. Mr. Aldous died Dec. 25, 2000. Mrs. Aldous and her husband ran the family dairy farm in the town of Pierrepont until the mid 70’s. Mrs. Aldous worked as a nurse’s aid at E.J. Noble Hospital in Canton and later worked as an aid for the Moongate Nursing Home. Mrs. Aldous also drove school bus for Canton Central School for about 10 years.

Mrs. Collins was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Loose; three brothers, George Collins, Elton Collins and Charles Collins; and by a niece, Sally Hollister. Born August 15, 1911, in Canton, she was a daughter of George and Mildred Witherbee Collins. She was a graduate of Canton High School. Prior to retiring from the Gran View Restaurant in Ogdensburg, NY she worked for numerous area restaurants in the tri-county area. In her spare time she enjoyed shopping, playing the lottery and going to BINGO at the Canton High Rise.
Kenneth F. Hollenbaugh, 54, 5 Elm Street, Canton, died on June 13, 2005 at his home in Canton. The funeral will be June 17, 2005 at 11:00 AM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Surviving are his son, Matthew Earle Calvin Hollenbaugh of Canton; his wife Linda Sue Hollenbaugh of Canton; three brothers, Earle E. Hollenbaugh, Jr of Baltimore, MD, David Hollenbaugh and wife Maryann of Downsville, NY, Daniel D. Hollenbaugh and wife Janet of Madison, Alabama; a sister, Nancy Heath and husband Ashley of Swindon, England; one half brother, Charles A. Bosman and wife wife Marsha of Interlaken, NY; and a half sister, Marion Lewis of Salem, NY. Born December 7, 1950, in Oneida, NY, he was a son of Earle Eugene Hollenbaugh of Canton and the late Elizabeth Ann Kaine Hollenbaugh, who died in 1988. He was a 1969 graduate of Canton High School. He later graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1973 and received Master’s degree in Education in 1974. Mr. Hollenbaugh married Linda Sue LaBarge Hollenbaugh on August 15, 1987 in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University with Rev. Max Coots officiating. Mr. Hollenbaugh was a veteran of the US Army Infantry Division receiving the rank of Lt. Col. He was commissioned into the US Army thru the ROTC program at St. Lawrence University. He also taught at Fort Drum as Lt. until 1999. While serving with the Nat’l Guard he was in charge of taking the Nat’l Guard from Malone to responded to the Denemora Prison Strike in the mid 70’s, taking control of 9 cell-blocks. At the time of his death he was employed as a Seargant Correction Officer for the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton. Mr. Hollenbaugh was actively involved in Boy Scout Troop #27 and for a short time Troop #62. He was also active in the Gray Lanes Bowling Leagues in Canton and a member and coordinator of the Civil War Round Table also in Canton.
Mary Jane Scott, 59, 37 Riverside Drive, Canton, died on May 31, 2005 at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home. The funeral will be June 4, 2005, at the Funeral Home.

Surviving are her two children, Dennis Scott and wife Jennifer of Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and Kimberly Reed of Canton; three brothers, John Caswell of Grand Island, NY, Claude J. Caswell of Madrid, NY and David Caswell of Schuylerville, NY; five sisters, Beatrice Jones of Fitzgerald, GA, Alice Pharoah of Russell, NY, Elizabeth Gibbs of South Colton, NY, Rose Fifield of Hermon, NY and Doris Pearce of North Tonawanda, NY; and six grandchildren. Ms. Scott was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Candice Scott. Born April 17, 1946, in Canton, NY, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Freida Jaycox Caswell. She attended Canton Schools and graduated from the Springvale Academy in Michigan. She later graduated from the Syracuse Beauty School and received her beautician’s license in New York State. Ms. Scott started her career with a Beauty Shop in Hermon and later worked for area shops in Canton, Potsdam and Gouverneur. She later opened her own shop called the Razor’s Edge in Canton, which she owned and operated until the mid to late 90’s when she had to retire due to illness. Ms. Scott was an active member at the Seventh Day – Adventist Church in Canton. She had been a volunteer at the United Helpers Canton Nursing Home and in her childhood days she was active in the 4-H and the Grange. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets and x-mas gifts for family members. She also enjoyed reading the Bible, various other books and spending time with her grandchildren.
Charles "Charlie" M. Mills, 95, 136 Church Street, Hermon and formerly of Morley and Poughkeepsie, NY, died on May 24, 2005 at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home. The funeral will be May 26, 2005 at 4:00 pm, at the Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. William Hart, pastor of Seven Steeples, officiating.
Calling Hours will be Thursday for 1:00 to 3:45 at the funeral home. Burial will be Friday May 27, at 11:00 A.M. at the Maryland Cemetery, Maryland, New York. Mills and fiancé Kerry Lauer, Maryland, many grandchildren, several niece and nephews. Mr. Mills is predeceased by 2 brothers, Fred Mills and Harvey Mills. Born of September 21, 1909, in Bloomville, New York, the son of Eliphlet and Louisa Mae Conover Mills, he attended Bloomville area schools. Mr. Mills was married to Mary Young , she later died and he married M. Gail Tarbell Mills. In the early 1930’s he and his brother owned and operated the Mills Bros. Trucking Co. and later went to work for the Penn Central Railroad where he worked for 32years as brakeman retiring in 1974. Mr. Mills became a licensed real estate broker working with the Fellnor Realty Inc. in Raymondville, N.Y. later for the Home Comfort Reality in Hermon. Mr. Mills also had a small farm in the Morley area in the early 70’s. Mr. Mills was a member of the St. Lawrence Lodge 111 F&AM of Canton, the United Transport Union for 32 years; he enjoyed watching Billy Graham, received his pilot’s license in his late teenage years and later flew twin engine planes in the Poughkeepsie and Newburg area. Bernice Irene Tupper, 95, 118 State Highway 310, Canton, died May 21, 2005 at her home. The funeral will be May 24, 2005 at 10:00 A.M., at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Leland Taylor Born on March 14, 1910 in Canton, the daughter of George and Lucy Hewitt Taylor, she graduated from Canton High School. On October 30, 1928, she married Franklin Tupper, at the Methodist Church in Canton. Mr. Tupper died April 5 1997. Mrs. Tupper ran the family farm on State Highway 310 from 1928 until retiring 1972.
