Mr. Durham was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and Harold. Born November 18, 1931 in Dekalb, he was the son of Cleland and Dorothy Hamilton Durham. He attended Dekalb High School. Mr. Durham was very proud to serve in the United States Air Force from May 1952 until April 1956 and in the United States Navy from August 1966 to March 1969. During the Vietnam War, he served two tours of duty with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 9, and received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a letter of commendation. On June 11, 1971 he married Betty E. Gilbert at the home of her mother in Dekalb Junction with Pastor Norman Love, officiating. Mr. Durham retired after 20 years of service for Hermon Dekalb Central School bus garage and also worked for Loopy’s Leather Shop in Dekalb Junction. He also enjoyed woodworking, building furniture, hunting and trapping.

In 1968, she graduated from Champlain Valley School of Nursing in Plattsburgh, then earned her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1973. On April 19, 1969, she married Timothy W. Wennrich at St. Assumption Church in Glens Falls. Mrs. Wennrich served as a Nurse in the United States Air Force from July 2, 1969, until she was Honorably Discharged as a First Lieutenant on July 31, 1970. After serving in the Air Force, she worked as a Registered Nurse of various organizations and businesses for 30 years. The couple moved to Canton, where Mrs. Wennrich became very active at the Banford Elementary School and helped initiate the Science Fair. They owned and operated the Bagel Depot on 109 Main Street from 1990-2000. She served as a Den Mother in Cub Scouts and served as a Boy Scout Leader. Mrs. Wennrich served on the Canton Democratic Committee, was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, the Canton Garden Club and worked with the local Habitat for Humanity organization. Mrs. Wennrich met daily with a women’s running club and several times a week with the Canton “Tea Ladies”. An avid outdoors person, she enjoyed hiking and canoeing.
Marion Kapples Spencer, 104, County Route 19, Trout Lake, NY, died on December 30, 2005 at the Kinneys Nursing Home in Gouverneur. The funeral will be Spring 2006, at the in the Spring at Trout Lake.
Marion K. Spencer, 104, of Trout Lake, died Friday evening at Kinneys Nursing Home in Gouverneur, where she had been a patient since mid-November. Mrs. Spencer was New Yorks 4th oldest retired teacher. A dedicated teacher, she has began her 35 year career in September 1920, three months after graduating from Clayton High School. She was one of three Seniors selected by the faculty that June to participate in an emergency summer teaching training program at Potsdam Normal School, designed to find and prepare apt students to fill in vacancies in the North Countrys one room schoolhouses. The flu epidemic of 1918 had decimated the teaching ranks. The school she chose was the Black Creek School btw Clayton and LaFargeville. She walked three and a half miles to her job much of the year and earned twenty dollars a week. In June 1923, she graduated from Potsdam with GOOD FOR LIFE teaching diploma and accepted a job in Mechanicsville, where she was also an assistant to the superintendent of schools. In June 1926, she and William C. Spencer,a Clarkson graduate from East DeKalb, were married at her aunt Harriet Burgess home in Clayton. The newylyweds were members of the school faculties in Hermon and DeKalb Junction for the next three years, then left along with many other teachers from the North Country for better paying jobs in the New York City area. From 1934 until their retirements in 1966, the Spencers were on the teaching staffs in Eastchester, NY. Born in Clayton on January 16, 1901, at the home of her parents, Thomas Patrick and Sara Garnsey Kapples, she kept her family and her hometown very much the center of her long life. Her parents died when she was a child and her mothers relatives took her and the four young children into their families. From the summer of 1938 until the summer of 2005, a camp at Trout Lake was her home. She often said Trout Lake was a miniature 1000 Islands to her. She loved having family and friends come to visit and frying perch and making bluberry pies were her specialty. Dropping everything for a game of cards was no problem either. Besides an annual visit to Clayton, she had been across the US many times, to the Canadian Rockies, Mexico, Ireland and Thailand. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and George Lehigh of Talcville, NY; daughter-in-law, Xiaomei Guan Spencer, East DeKalb; and grandchildren, Holly Snelgrore of Salt Lake, Scot Lehigh of Boston, Brett Lehigh of Alameda, CA, Christopher Spencer of Dallas, Kim Crabill of Portland, MN, Jocelyn Sagrati of Buffalo and Genifer Spencer of London, England.

Born June 2, 1954, in Bayshore Hospital, Long Island, NY a son of Peter and Barbara Rodee Laspina, he graduated from Central Islip School in 1972, James then went to Cornell University receiving a Bachelors of Science Degree in Agricultural Science in 1976. After graduating he went to work on a dairy farm south of Buffalo, NY On May 1, 1982, Jim married Paula J. Milliron in Eden, New York. In September 1983 the family moved to St. Lawrence County to help on the family farm, Brick Chapel Acres, in the Town of Canton. He later became a member of the Brick Chapel Church. In May of 1985, Jim began his 20 plus year career at LeBerge & Curtis, Inc. on the North Russell Road in Canton as a well respected mechanic. He was a very dedicated employee, always arriving to work early to either start a fire in the shop, start the coffee or get a head start on putting parts away and the days work load. In addition to his service to LeBerge & Curtis, he was dedicated to the service of his area farmers and friends, often helping them on weekends and nights. Jim enjoyed the outdoors whether it was hunting, cutting firewood or just being in the woods. As a child and young man Jim enjoyed visiting and helping on the family farm. He was referred to as a great dad by his children.

Bill was pre-deceased by a sister Lucille Jenack, who died in 2001. Born on January 14, 1929, in the Town of Pierrepont son of the late William B. and Bernice Riley Briggs, he attended Crary Mills Rural School and Canton High School. Mr. Briggs married Venita Elizabeth St. Dennis at the St. Mary’s Church Rectory in Canton on July 7, 1948. He worked as a Labor Foreman for many years, mostly through Local 322 Laborers Union, Massena. Mr. Briggs was involved in the construction of numerous St. Lawrence University Campus buildings including the Owen D. Young Library. He was later highered as the first worker for the new Canton ATC Campus. Bill had previously worked for the Racquette River Construction Co. during the constructing of the St. Lawrence Seaway and for the Murnane Construction Co. for a number of years. He had also been a code enforcement officer for three years for the Town of Pierrepont. Bill lived in Crary Mills most of his life, moving to Canton in 2001. He was President of the Crary Mills Cemetery from 1997 until the present, where he spent countless hours ensuring the upkeep of the cemetery. He was a 50 year member and charter member of Local 322 Laborers Union International as well as a member of the Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department. From 1969-2000, Bill and his father-in-law, Herbert St. Dennis, owned a hunting camp on the White Road in the Town of Clare. In addition to hunting, Bill enjoyed fishing and his vegetable garden. He also enjoyed gathering and boiling sap with his half brother’s ( Richard Briggs) Sugar Bush.

Mr. Forbes worked on the family dairy farm in the Ogdensburg area until the age of 17. He then went to work on a dairy farm in the Gouverneur area. Later Mr. Forbes went to work as a mechanic at Hobkirk GMC in Ogdensburg, before going to work for Mace Motors in Canton and then Peters’ Ford Sales. Upon leaving Peters’ Ford, Mr. Forbes became a self-employed mechanic, retiring in 1993. Mr. Forbes was a member of the St. Lawrence County Fire Police and the Fireman’s Assoc. of the State of New York. He was also a member of the West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Dept. for nearly 40 years, where he was honored as Fireman of the Year in 2003.

Born February 3, 1911, in Massena, NY, daughter of William and Lottie Mae Becker Somers, she attended Massena Central School. Mrs. Olin went to work for NY Bell Telephone Co. in 1927 at the age of 16 first in Massena and later transferred to the Canton Office on East Main Street in 1930. She took up residence at Clark’s Rooming House on Goodrich Street. She made $ 8.00 per week and $ 6.00 went for room and board. She married Glenn W. Olin on September 29, 1940 and resided at 12 Goodrich Street, where she remained for 65 years when illness took her to the United Helpers Nursing Home on Main Street, Canton. Mr. Olin died in March of 1961. Mrs. Olin was a homemaker, a book-keeper for Glen’s business (Olin’s Garage at 3 West Main St.), a seamstress, a landlady to St. Lawrence and ATI students, a neighbor and friend to many on Goodrich St., and lastly the greatest mother in the world in the eyes of her son, William. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and reading mystery novels.

Long time Canton resident Dr. Robert Thomas (“Doc”) Rogers, 85, of Sullivan Drive, Canton, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at the Fletcher-Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington, Vermont. There will be a private memorial service held at the convenience of the family. Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton is handling arrangements. Dr. Rogers’ wife of 56 years, the former Alice Jane Cowan, pre-deceased him on Dec. 21, 2003. The couple were married September 20, 1947, in the First Presbyterian Church in Brockville, Ontario. He is survived by his loving sons and daughters, Robert Thomas Rogers II, Potsdam, Geoffrey Cowan Rogers and wife Sandy, Clifton Park, Jennifer Gail Rogers and husband Joe Jubinville, Canton and Lynn Ann Rogers, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and his loving grand children, Jessica Erin Rogers, Thomas Alan Rogers and Elizabeth Cowan Rogers. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Seaton. From 1954 to 1972, Dr. Rogers was the Director of St. Lawrence County Laboratories and supervised laboratories in Canton, Potsdam, Massena, Gouverneur, Star Lake and Ogdensburg. He also consulted for the St. Lawrence State Hospital and the E.J. Noble Hospital in Alexandria Bay. He was a member of the St. Lawrence County Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the American Medical Association, the College of American Pathologists, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. He also served as President of the New York State Association of Public Health Laboratories. In 1972, Dr. Rogers accepted a position as pathologist at the Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip. New York. In 1976, he left the Good Samaritan to become Director of Laboratories at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Smithtown, New York. Dr. Rogers returned to the North Country in 1979 to serve as Director of Pathology for the Canton-Potsdam Hospital and Massena Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1988. Born July 26, 1920, in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, he was a son of the late George M. and Clara MacFarlane and attended grade school and high school in Brockville. Dr. Rogers pursued his undergraduate and medical school studies at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario from 1939 to 1945. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in fall of 1943 while attending medical school. On May 6, 1946, he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp by King George the Sixth. He was stationed outside of Montreal, Quebec where he served as medical officer aboard trains transporting German POWs from POW camps in northern Ontario to Halifax, Nova Scotia for transport back to Europe. He also served as medical officer aboard trains moving European war brides and families from Halifax, Nova Scotia, as far west as Vancouver, British Columbia. He was promoted to the rank of Captain after six months of active duty. Dr. Rogers did his Pathology Residency at Bender Hygienic Laboratories in Albany, New York beginning in 1947. In 1952 and 1953, he was Director of the City Laboratory in the Rome and Murphy Memorial Hospital in Rome, New York. During that time, he also served as pathologist for the Rose Hospital, the Oneida County Hospital, the Rome State Hospital and the Griffiss Air Force Base Hospital. While in Canton Dr. Rogers was on the teaching staff of St. Lawrence University in association with the Approved Medical Technology School. He was advisor to the Canton Agricultural and Technical College Associate Medical Technology Program and he was one of approximately 20 pathologists nationwide asked to attend a conference on the use of radio isotopes in diagnostic medicine at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Dr. Rogers was an advisor to the St. Lawrence Chapter of the Regional American Red Cross of Syracuse, and was advisor and on the Board of the St. Lawrence Chapter of the American Cancer Society. He served as a Director of the Boy Scouts of St. Lawrence County and as Director of the St. Lawrence National Bank (now Community Bank System). Dr. Rogers was a Mason and a Shriner and enjoyed his Hobby Farm on the Finnegan Road in Canton.
Albert Halouska, 79, 293 Judson Street Road, Canton, died on June 27, 2006 at his home in Canton. The funeral will be June 30, 2006 at 11:00 AM, at the Crary Mills Cemetery.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 30, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Crary Mills Cemetery, at Langdon Corners, Canton with the Rev. William G. Hart officiating. Surviving are his wife Jean Louise Butterfield Halouska; a daughter, Patti Prouty and husband Jeffrey, Canton; a son Robert Halouska, Canton; two brothers, Ralph, Arnold, NE and Glenn and his wife Marion of Sargent, NE; a sister, Ethel Smith, Witchata, KS; and a sister-in-law Lela Halouska of Cozad, NE. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Halouska was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence, Joe and Milford, as well as, three sisters, Gladys, Nellie and Veva. Born September 2, 1926, in Arnold, Nebraska, he was a son of the late Frank and Rosa Mary Beckler Halouska; he graduated from Pleasant Hill High School, Arnold, NE. On May 17, 1952, he married Jean Louise Butterfield at the First Methodist Church in Waynesville, Missouri, with Rev. John A. Bolen officiating. Upon graduation he entered the US Army and served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in October of 1952. He then went to work at Bates International Harvester in Broken Bow, NE as a mechanic and later went to Sargent, NE to work for Wayne Penney International Harvester. In 1962 Mr. Halouska went to work at Robinson Farm Equipment on Riverside Drive in Canton, where he worked for Art Robinson and then Roger McBath for 16 years before going to work for LeBerge & Curtis in the late 1970’s, where he retired in 1997 at the age of 70. The couple lived on West Street in Canton for about 17 years and for the past 23 years at 293 Judson Street Road also in Canton. Mr. Halouska enjoyed playing the guitar, gardening and working on his hobby farm where he raised beef cattle. He was a member of Edward C. Seymour Post 1231, VFW where he enjoyed playing in the Post Band when it was located on Main Street in Canton.
Kermit M. Exelby, 67, 2176 Ridge Road, Fabius, NY, Town of Pompey, died on June 5, 2006 at his home. The funeral will be June 10, 2006 at 11:00 am, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Mr. Exelby was predeceased by both parents, a sister, Dolly Tracy and a niece, Julie Leonard. Born March 31, 1939 in Ogdensburg, New York, the son of Harry and Bessie Jones Exelby, he graduated from Lisbon Central School in 1956 where he played in the band and was a member of the Future Farmers of America. He married Avis Leonard on September 12, 1959 at the Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Dobbie, officiating. As a young man, he drove a milk truck hauling milk cans. Later on he drove school bus for Lyle H. Flack for contract to Lisbon Central School and did charter trips on contract with the bus line for St. Lawrence University and Lisbon Central School. He also concurrently owned and operated a dairy farm in Lisbon until moving to Pompey in 1986. Since 1986 he had been employed by Case Supply Inc., a kitchen and plumbing supply business located in Syracuse where he worked as a truck driver. Mr. Exelby was a member of the Waddington Lodge #393 Free and Accepted Masons and Fulton Chapter #OES, both of Waddington. He enjoyed hunting, friends, family and neighbors. Kermit was a loving husband, great father, good friend and someone you could connect with instantly. He was a genuine, honest, giving and caring man who was well respected by family and friends. He was a joy to know and touched many lives. Words cannot express this great loss.

She was predeceased by a sister Aileen Hutchinson, who died April 22, 2005. Born February 15, 1917, in Mallorytown, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Frederick Henry and Vivian Osier Nowlan, she attended Canton High School. Mrs. Lambert was married to Edward “Choppy” Lambert (who died Jan. 16, 1984) on March 28, 1937 at the Canton United Methodist Church, with Rev. Carter officiating. She lived on the Sykes Farm for a time, worked at the St/ Lawrence Bookstore and also Bing Stevens Store for Paul Clement, retiring in 1979. Mrs. Lambert was a past member of the Grasse River Senior Citizens and also the Ladies Auxillary of the VFW, where she held all the chairs at least once.

He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Grant of North Norwich, who died in January of 2005. Born July 3, 1926, in Norwich, NY, he was a son of the late Harold Oliver and Laura Elizabeth Kinny, he graduated from Norwich High School in 1944 and joined the US Army serving in WWII from 1944-1946. In 1949, he graduated from New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences (Utica Tech) in Utica, NY with an associate’s degree in Retail Business Management. In 1950 he married Lois Hofer in Beaver Falls, NY at the family home. Mrs. Lois Ferguson died in 1981. He then married Jane Grandaw Mousaw in December of 1983 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton. She died in 2000. Mr. Ferguson retired as Office Supervisor from KRAFT Foods in Canton after 28 years of service. He previously worked for American Stores in Lowville for 6 or 7 years and also Nortz & Virkler Ford for a short time. He was a past member of the VFW , Edward C. Seymour, Post 1231 in Canton, the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club, First Presbyterian Church of Canton and the Madrid Golf Club. He enjoyed watching Yankee baseball and was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. He was a goal judge for Men’s Hockey at St. Lawrence University for many years and also a long-time Pee Wee baseball coach in Lowville and in Canton.
