Mr. Judd died Friday morning at his home. Surviving are his wife Mary Ruth, two step-daughters, Marilyn Gibson, Watertown, Anita Harris and her husband Thomas, Ballston Spa and two step-grandsons, Michael Gibson and his wife Michelle, Brewerton, and Timothy Harris, Burlington, Vt., and nieces and nephews. Born in the same home he died in, in the town of Canton on July 28, 1917, he was the son of Almeron and Polly McLellan Judd. After graduating from Canton High School in 1936, he enrolled in many electrical classes at then Canton ATI. The training allowed him to own and operate a business called The Lamp Shop for many years. He was known to many people as “the Lamp Man”. On October 15, 1983, he married Mary Ruth Beaman in Crary Mills Church, with Rev. L. Everett Waite, officiating. Mr. Judd owned and operated a dairy farm most of his life. A very active member of the former Crary Mills Grange, he held many offices in the organization. Mr. Judd was a member of the International Stamp Club as an avid collector of stamps and also collected coins. A member of the Crary Mills Church, he also served as the Sexton of the Crary Mills Cemetery for many years, retiring in 2003 due to declining health. He was a member of the St. Lawrence Lodge #111, F and A M and had served as Master of the Lodge. He was a member of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association and was honored with the naming of Herbert F. and Mary Ruth Judd Gallery at the Silas Wright House.

Clarence A. Clutter, Jr., 92, of Winthrop Road, Syracuse, died Sunday, May 6, 2006, at the James Square Nursing Facility in Syracuse. He was the husband of Lillian Mae Clutter of Syracuse. A private graveside service will be held in the Fairview Cemetery, Canton, NY with Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice. He is also survived by a son, Clarence A. Clutter, III of Canastota, NY. Mr. Clutter was predeceased by three brothers, Jim, Bob and Dan Clutter. Born December 30, 1913, in Washington, PA, he was a son of the late Clarence A., Sr. and Mary May Robertson Clutter. Mr. Clutter attended Washington, PA Schools. On January 3, 1959 in Plattsburgh, NY, he married Lillian Mae Clark of Canton, NY. Mr. Clutter was a 22 year veteran of the US Air Force, serving in WWII. He later worked for Syracuse China Corporation in Syracuse.

She is also survived by a brother-in-law Giuseppe Cufari and wife Maria Sergi of Australia, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mrs. Sergi was predeceased by a brother, Graziano Spagnolo and a sister, Caterina Spagnolo. Born July 27, 1942 in Plati, Reggio Calabria, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Francesco and Elisabetta Zappia Spagnolo. Being the 6th child of 12, she helped raise the younger children while in Italy. Upon completion of her schooling she worked briefly as a seamstress before leaving her family and moving to her brother’s home in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada in 1961. While in Cornwall, she took English classes and worked as a seamstress. She also helped at her uncles restaurant, Zappias . On October 27, 1962, she married Saverio Sam Sergi in Cornwall, Ontario at St. Therese Catholic Church. The couple moved to Canton in 1966 and established Sergis Pizzeria in 1967 on Main Street in Canton, NY. The restaurant has hosted numerous events, gatherings and galas for both SUNY College and St. Lawrence Univ. as well as St. Mary’s Parish and the community. Mrs. Sergi also was a supporter of her families love of horses and would travel to various events , but her true love was the restaurant. Mrs. Sergi was also a woman of strong faith and was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church. She had strong morals and tried to pass the ways of the old country on to her family and to the many patrons of the restaurant, who she also treated as family. Mrs. Sergis life was devoted to her family, her children, her work and a host of friends.
Eleanor Virginia Christenson Erickson, 98, 15 Church Street, Canton, died on April 4, 2006 at her sons home in Canton. The funeral will be April 8, 2006 at 2:00 PM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Eleanor was born on the family property at 295 Tremont Avenue in Orange, New Jersey on July 10, 1907, to Wilma Josephson and Josef Christenson, Swedish immigrants who settled in Orange. Josef establish a contracting business, having been trained as a mason to the King of Sweden. Mrs. Erickson attended Orange High School and Simmons College from which she and her sister Lillian both graduated in 1929. Eleanor worked for a time at the Collegiate School in Passaic, NJ, until the Great Depression forced its closing. She then was employed for a time by B. Altman and Co. before beginning a family. In 1932, she married John Raymond Erickson of Newark, NJ, an engineer at the Bell Labs, and they lived at Mosswood Court in Orange where they maintained beautiful gardens. Eleanor became a leader in the communities of Orange and East Orange. She was for many years President of the East Orange Garden Club which sponsored community beautification programs and formalized the first Dont Be A Litterbug campaign, a national movement, for which she was honored by the City of East Orange. She was a champion flower arranger and judge who competed successfully at the State level on numerous occasions and was greatly respected by her peers for her creative skills and horticultural knowledge. For 30 years she chaired the committee of Associated Garden Clubs of New Jersey that placed flower arrangements once a week in every occupied room of the massive East Orange Veterans Hospital to brighten the lives of veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars. She was the Flower Lady and the State Garden Club of New Jersey paid tribute to her at her retirement. In 2000, by decree of the Mayor of Orange, she was named a Woman of the Year at the age of 92 as a role model for young women. Her leadership and love sustained the Fellowship of Devine Truth for nearly 20 years in the spirit of concern for the lives of people and animals around her. She welcomed many a stray cat into her home during that mission. She was a member of the White Eagle Lodge of Montgomery, Texas. She was also a lifelong member of the Hillside Presbyterian Church where she taught kindergarten and headed the Flower Committee for 32 years. It is noteworthy that she was the first women to be elected Elder at her church, a mark of the respect with which she was held by her peers. The Hillside and Valley Presbyterian Womens Group gave her their Woman of the Year Award as well. Although she made many friends during her endeavors, some of the strongest and longest friendships were with the summer inhabitants of Camp Randolph in Highgate Springs, Vermont. This part of the North Country on Lake Champlain was where she renewed her spirit for a couples of weeks each year. There Eleanor and Ray and their three sons, J. Mark of Canton, New York, Ray J. of Toronto, Canada, and Glenn E. and his wife Jane of Maplewood, New Jersey, the family convened each year to relax and reconnect, enjoying the sanctuary of the nearby Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge Eleanor Erickson passed away on April 4, 2006, at home in Canton, NY where she attended the First Presbyterian Church. She leaves her three sons, Mark, Glenn, and Ray, daughterinlaw Jane, four grandchildren, Julianne Mae Bond, Thomas Alexander, Meredith Lane, and Lance Tarn, a nephew, Nils Arthur and niece, Mareka and their families. Eleanor was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Ohlson, and a brother, Arthur Christenson, and by her husband of 60 years, John Raymond. Born August 10, 1910, in Lisbon, NY she was a daughter of the late Alfred O. and Anna Putney Carr, she attended Lisbon area Country Schools. Prior to her marriage to John O’Haro in 1950, she helped her father operate the A.O. Carr General Store located on the Ogdensburg Road, Route 68. Mr. O’Haro died May 7, 1961. Later she married Walter M. Bowers on November 13, 1972 in Canton. Mr. Bowers died March 11, 1992. Mrs. Bowers did domestic work for many families in and around the Canton and Flackville areas. Mrs. Bowers will be most remembered for her flower gardens. She had numerous varieties of flowers planted around her Morrill Road home, where she lived from 1972 to 1996. Mrs. Bowers also enjoyed helping others when able.

Clifford and Verniez Leona Spies Stokes. After graduating from Carson Long Military School in New Bloomfield, Pa. on June 3, 1953, he attended Canton ATI, now SUNY Canton. He served in the United States Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in April 1963. On March 5, 1960, he married Ruth Van Iderstyne at the First Presbyterian Church in Gouverneur, with Rev. Merritt W. Updyke, officiating. Mr. Stokes owned and operated the family run business Northern Abstract Corporation, an Abstract and Title Insurance company, that had been founded by his father. His daughter Sandra, continues to run the operation. Mr. Stokes built a camp on an island in Trout Lake that his father had bought in the early 1930’s. He was an avid enthusiast of his family camp and Trout Lake in general and had been a member of the Trout Lake Association. A hand tool buff, he meticulously maintained the records and manuals of his collection of tools. He also was known as a car buff, and attended the Detroit Auto Show for many years.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Twichell and her husband David, 90 Comanche Drive, Falmouth, MA, 02540, Joanne Jones and her husband Kevin, 4 Patricia Avenue, Exeter, N.H., 03833, one granddaughter, Sarah Anne Twichell, Atlanta,two grandsons, Geoffrey Piskor Chase and his fiance Eva Wenzel, Freiburg, Germany, Nathan Piskor Twichell, a senior at SLU, Falmouth, Mass. Graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Middlebury College in 1937, he earned his Ph.D. at Syracuse University in 1950. In 1939, Mr. Piskor joined the staff of Syracuse University as a personnel counselor. In 1941, he became an instructor and in 1960 was promoted to full professor. While at Syracuse, Dr. Piskor also served as dean of men, vice president and dean of student services and faculties. In 1969, he became vice chancellor and provost, and later that year, he left to become the 14th president of St. Lawrence University. Canton and North Country communities to whom he devoted 25 years of service after his retirement from St. Lawrence in 1981, where recipients of his powerful impact. The same impact St. Lawrence received during his years of leadership of the University his mark is everywhere. When he retired in 1981, he and Anne, and again then later Frank himself, began to have the same kind of impact on the Canton community the place they decided was their home. Its hard to think of an important project or need in our community that missed their attention, through leadership and through quiet philanthropy that, over time, has added up to an amazing level. At the time of his death, he was serving as Honorary Chairman of the Canton Free Library Centennial Campaign. Dr. Piskors presidency saw tremendous growth of the University. While he was president, St. Lawrence grew from serving roughly 1,400 students to become a 30 building complex serving 2,000 students. Among the historical milestones that took place during the Piskor presidency are 1970, the Augsbury Physical Education Center and Leithead Field House were built. 1974, St. Lawrence became the first college in America to establish its own study program in Kenya. Two additional international programs, in Canada and England, were added to St. Lawrences options under Dr. Piskors leadership. 1979, The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery is dedicated 1980, the new 4.2 million dollar addition to the Owen D. Young Library, the Torrey Wing, opened. In addition to his devotion to St. Lawrence, Dr. Piskor was extremely active in his community. Among the organizations and businesses benefiting from his participation and leadership were the E.J. Noble Foundation, the Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, the E.J. Noble Hospital, Canton Potsdam Hospital, the St. Lawrence County Boy Scout Council, the Canton Rotary Club, the Syracuse University Library Associates, the Citizens Foundation of Syracuse, the Middlebury Alumni Council, the Syracuse Symphony, the Plymouth Congregational Church, the St. Lawrence County Bank, now Community Bank, Syracuse Savings Bank and Niagara Mohawk. Dr. Piskor received many honors and awards during his career, including honorary degrees from St. Lawrence, Middlebury, Syracuse, Alfred University, Clarkson University, Colgate University and Westminster College. He also was awarded the Syracuse University Library Associates Post Standard Award for Distinguished Service, the Canton ATC College Council Chairmans Award, the Award for Distinguished Service to Education from SUNY Potsdam, the Canton Potsdam Hospital Board of Directors Service Award and the Good Scout Award from the Seaway Valley Council for Boy Scouts. The Canton Rotary Club named him a Paul Harris Fellow, its highest honor, in 1989. In May, Dr. Piskor was to receive a St. Lawrence University North Country Citation for his decades of service to the region. Poet Robert Frost was a personal friend of Dr. Piskors. The two met in 1935, when Dr. Piskor worked as a kitchen assistant at Middleburys Breadloaf School for writers. It began a lifelong interest in Frost and his work; St. Lawrences Frost Collection in the rare books area of Owen D. Young Library was given to the University by Dr. Piskor. Dr. Piskor also gave his Edward Arlington Robinson Collection in addition to etchings by artist Martin Hardie and a collection of works by author Marianne Moore to the library. He also established the Anne and Frank Piskor Scholarship. Upon his retirement, faculty and staff established the Frank Piskor Faculty Lectureship in his honor, and trustees at that time established the Frank Piskor Professorship, held today by English professor Thomas Berger. Dr. Piskor loved traveling to Switzerland with his wife Anne, and their visits to their cottage in Maine. He also enjoyed walking at the St. Lawrence University Fitness Center.

While in California he met his wife, Susan. The couple moved to Texas in the 80’s before moving to the West Pierrepont area in 1989. In the early until the late 90’s Mr. Herndon worked as a carpenter, employed by Office For The Aging, St. Lawrence County. Prior to that he worked as a landscaper/ gardener in California. Mr. Herndon enjoyed science fiction and medieval movies and books. He also enjoyed animals.

Wylie, all of Jacksonville, Florida. Three brothers and their wives, Ben and Juanita, Rossville, Georgia, William and Jean, Houston, Texas, and James and Jimmie Ann, Adairsville, Georgia. Predeceasing Mr. Brackett are his wife Marian, who died August 20, 1998, two brothers, Raymond and Daniel, and one sister Sarah Callaway. Born on February 5, 1923, in Dalton, Georgia, he was a son Daniel F. and Edna Lavina Hair and graduated from Cohutta High School in 1940. In 1943 he graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1970 he earned his Masters from St. Lawrence University. Mr. Brackett enlisted in the United States Army on June 8, 1942 and served until February 18, 1945. He continued to serve in the US Army Reserves until 1968, when he retired as a Major. On October 25, 1947, he married Marian Moore in Pasadena, California, with Rev. John F. Scott, officiating. In 1947 moved to Canton to assume the duties as Manager of Kraft Foods, where he served for 15 years. Mr. Brackett then went to work in the Business Office at St. Lawrence University, and later became the director of Budgets and Assistant to the Vice President for Business, retiring in 1986. From 1970-1998, Mr. Brackett served as Clerk of the Canton Central School District. He served as the Town and Village Historian in 1993. His community spirit and desire to serve the community was evidenced by serving a very active role in the committees and programs he worked with to include the United Fund of St. Lawrence County, long time member and served as President from 1961-62 of the Canton Rotary Club, American Cancer Society, the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, the Canton Garden Club, Out-A-Fit Hunting Club, Stillwater Club of Canton, the First Baptist Church and served on the Monsignor Griffith J. Rose Akins, 79, South Burlington, Vermont and formerly of Canton, died on March 2, 2006 surrounded by her family at the home of her son and daughter-in-law. The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family, at the date to be announce later, there will be a joint memorial service for her and her husband, Lee, in May.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Marsha Akins of Canton; three daughters, Claudia Dwyer of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Lori and Mark Cartmill of Paul Smiths, and Lisa Akins and Gary Richter of Huntington, Vt.; eight grandchildren, Matt and Brandi Akins of Bucks Bridge, Mike and Anna Akins of Seattle, Wash.,Josh Cartmill of Paul Smiths, Chelsea Dwyer of Cape Elizabeth, Nick Dwyer, a junior at James Madison University in Virginia, Erin Cartmill, a senior at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., Connor Cartmill of Paul Smiths and Kai Richter of Huntington; a brother, Edward and Lou Parisella of North Haven, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Lee, who died just a week earlier on Feb. 21, 2006. The couple had spent the last three years in South Burlington, Vt., so they could be closer to their youngest grandchild, Kai Oakley Richter. Mrs. Akins was born April 27, 1926 in Schenectady, the daughter of Onorato and Helen Parisella. She graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1944. While attending a U.S.O. dance with her friends, she met her future husband, who was attending Union College through the U.S. Navy’s V-12 program. In November of 1945, she married Lee Oakley Akins in Schenectady. The couple spent several years in Schenectady where their first three children were born. They then spent three years in Gillford, Conn., and moved to College Street, Canton in December of 1957. In 1972, they moved to the Russell Road. In 1988, following Mr. Akins’ retirement from the civil engineering business, the couple moved to Florida. They spent many years in the Hobe Sound area of Florida, returning to the North Country during the summer to spend time with their children and grandchildren at the family camp on Trout Lake. Mrs. Akins was a homemaker and enjoyed golfing, traveling, playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved cooking Italian dishes for her family and passed many recipes down to her children and grandchildren. Lee Oakley Akins, 82, Canton, died on February 22, 2006 at the home of his son and dau-in-law in Canton. The funeral will be announced, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
CANTON - Funeral services for Lee Oakley Akins, 82, formerly of Canton and a native of Lisbon, will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. Mr. Akins died Wednesday night (Feb. 22, 2006) at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, surrounded by his family. He had been under the care of Hospice for several weeks. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose; a son and daughter-in- law, James and Marsha Akins of Canton; three daughters, Claudia Dwyer of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Lori and Mark Cartmill of Paul Smiths, and Lisa Akins and Gary Richter of Huntington, Vt.; eight grandchildren, Matt and Brandi Akins of Bucks Bridge, Mike and Anna Akins of Seattle, Wash.,Josh Cartmill of Paul Smiths, Chelsea Dwyer of Cape Elizabeth, Nick Dwyer, a junior at James Madison University in Virginia, Erin Cartmill, a senior at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., Connor Cartmill of Paul Smith’s and Kai Richter of Huntington; two sisters, Helen Paxton of Lisbon, Arlene and James Hogan of Hudson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, James Akins, who died during World War II. Mr. Akins was born on June 20, 1923 in Lisbon, the son of John Lee and Evelyn Laundrie Akins. He spent most of his childhood on the family farm, Glebe Road, Lisbon. His friends growing up referred to him as Oakley. He graduated from Lisbon High School and did a year of post-graduate work at Ogdensburg Free Academy before spending a year at Clarkson University. In 1945, he graduated from Union College and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant and called up for active duty during the Korean Conflict. In November of 1945, he married Rose Parisella in Schenectady. The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary this November during a joint reception following their grandson’s wedding. After their first three children were born, the couple spent three years in Connecticut before moving to College Street in Canton. They spent most of their married life on the Russell Road, Canton. Mr. Akins ran his own Civil Engineering business for many years in Canton. Part of his career was spent with his partner Joe Tisdel and he then formed Akins & Associates. Some of his engineering designs in the North Country include the Massena Arena, the village of Canton’s water plant, and a number of water and sewer systems for North Country municipalities. He retired in 1988, and the couple moved to Hobe Sound, Fla., where they spent most of their retired life. Always needing something to work on, the long-time engineer decided to go back to work part-time for the Creech Engineering firm in Stuart, Fla. He enjoyed golfing, summers at the family camp in Trout Lake, watching New York Giants Football, talking politics, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. Clisson E. Brown Jr., 85, 6157 County Route 27 and formerly of 11 Brewer Road, Canton, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam. The funeral will be Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 11:00 am, at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Lawrence Funeral Home. There will be a Masonic Service at 6:00 on Friday evening at the Funeral Home, conducted by the St. Lawrence Lodge #111, Free and Accepted Masons. Predeceasing Mr. Brown are two sisters Harriet Lorence and Jean McKibben. Born in Canton on the family home on the Pierrepont Road on January 19, 1921, he was the son of C. Everett and Jessie MacLellan Brown. Having graduated from Canton High School in 1938, he graduated in 1940 with an Associated degree in Agriculture from then Canton Agriculture and Technical Institute, now SUNY Canton. He also took classes from Cornell University. On April 12, 1946, he married Barbara Annette Tripp at the United Christian Church in West Carthage, with Rev. Lyman Achenback, officiating. For many years he ran the family dairy farm in the corner of the Pierrepont Road and the Brewer Road, until he sold it to his son Mark in the mid 1990’s. In addition to running the dairy farm, he also worked for the US Department of Agriculture in the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) for thirty four (34) years retiring on September 27, 1986 as District Director. For over fifteen years the couple traveled in the winter to Naples, Florida, with their group of close friends. Mr. Brown was a long time member of the St. Lawrence Lodge # 111, Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the Retired Persons from ASCS and a past member of the Farm Bureau.
Charles "Charlie" Darling, 85, 36 County Route 34, Bucks Bridge, died on April 19, 2007 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam. The funeral will be April 23, 2007 at 11:00, at the Bucks Bridge Community Church.

Born on Feb. 16, 1922 in Syracuse, the son of Charles and Pauline Foster Darling Sr. and graduated from Madrid High School in 1941. Mr. Darling married Wava Blanche Bradley on May 9, 1957 at the Madrid Methodist Church with Rev. Wilber O. Hull, officiating. Mrs. Darling died Nov. 29, 2000. Mr. Darling owned and operated the family dairy farm from the time of his graduation from high school until June 1981. He also drove milk truck for Racquette Acres Dairy Farms in Potsdam, drove school bus for Madrid- Waddington Central School and also Canton Central School, then Lyle Flack Bus Line. He also drove ambulance for R.B. Lawrence Ambulance in Canton from the mid 1980’s through the mid 1990’s. He also helped run the IBA warehouse with lifelong friend and neighbor Bill Allen in Baraboo, Wis. The couple ran Lazy River Farm Camp Ground at Bucks Bridge. Mr. Darling was an Honorary Member of the West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department, member of the St. Lawrence Lodge #111, Free & Accepted Masons, a Charter member of Boy Scout Troop 27 of Canton, a Life member NNY Volunteer Firemen’s Association, a life-long member of the Bucks Bridge Community Church, member of the Neuro Stroke Support Group at Clarkson and a member of Good Sam Camping Club. Among Mr. Darling’s past memberships, he was a past member of the St. Lawrence County Fire Police, a past Boy Scout Master in Norwood, Madrid and Bucks Bridge, a former member of the Empire State Farmers Future Farmers of America, a New York State Brown Swiss Breeders Association, a National Assoc. of Basketball Officials and member of the ASA Baseball and Softball Officials. Mr. Darling owned his own airplane and was an appriate pilot and avid aviator and served as a Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol and a past President Flying Farmers of America. Mr. Darling was an avid Canton Minor Hockey, Canton High School and St. Lawrence University Hockey Fan.
Ruth Clark Cook, 81, Albuquerque, New Mexico, died on March 25, 2007 at her residence in New Mexico. The funeral will be Private, at the Evergreen Cemetery.
Ruth Clark Cook, 81, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, formerly of Canton, NY, died March 25, 2007 at her residence. Born August 28, 1925, in Ogdensburg, NY, daughter of Hugh and Alma Boehrig Clark, she graduated Canton High School and later St. Lawrence University majoring in Biology. In 1947 she married Lewis Townsend Cook, Jr. Mr. cook died in 2003. The couple lived in Canton briefly before relocating out of the area. While working, Mrs. Cook was a social worker. The couple had a camp at Cranberry Lake, NY which they visited annually for quite a few years. Surviving are two daughters, Martha R. Cook of Albuquerque, NM and Susan F. Vaughn of Rio Rancho, NM; two grandchildren, Stephen and Sarah Klages of NM. Burial will be held privately.
