On June 17, 1955, she married Thomas M. Calnon, an employee and subsequently President of the First National Bank of Canton. The ceremony was held at the rectory of the Richville Baptist Church, by her father, who was pastor of the church. Mrs. Calnon was extremely active for more than 30 years as a member and fund-raiser and volunteer officer of the American Heart Association, Local Chapter. In this connection was named Canton VFW Citizen of the Year. As a member and charter member of the Canton Area Zonta Club, she raised funds, through a holiday auction, for the Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center, resulting in $5,000 donated, for which she received an award at her 80th birthday celebration this year. Mrs. Calnon was an extremely avid St. Lawrence University Hockey Fan where she helped establish and became a charter member of the Saints Hockey Boosters. She also acted as Treasurer of the Evergreen Cemetery for a time. For many years the couple owned a summer cottage on Chapman Point in Morristown.

Jane "Betty" McCartney Hilton, 86, Canton, NY, died on July 7, 2004 in California. The funeral will be Friday, August 27, 2004 at 2:00 PM, at the Evergreen Cemetery.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Canton on August 27, 2004 at 2:00 PM. Betty is survived by three daughters, Carol Cavanaugh of Tucson, Arizona, Kathleen Rice and husband Kyle of Phoenix, Arizona, and Susan Salnick and husband Steve of Groveland, California; two brothers, John McCartney and wife Dorothy of Westtown, Pennsylvania, and Robert McCartney and wife Margaret of East Melbourne, Australia; three grandchildren, Kyle Rice II and wife Lee of Silver City, New Mexico, Valerie Rice Enderlin and husband Carl of Pasco, Washington, and Theresa Cavanaugh Arneson and husband Keith of Waldorf, Maryland; six great-grandchildren, Jesse Rice of Silver City, New Mexico, Casey, Aaron, and Mirina Enderlin of Pasco, Washington, and Sarah and Kyle Arneson of Waldorf, Maryland; one niece, Elaina McCartney of Ithaca, New York; and three nephews, Michael McCartney of West Falmouth, Massachusetts, Scott McCartney of New York City, and Brent McCartney of East Melbourne, Australia. She was preceded in death by her stepson, Richard E. Hilton. After graduating from the old Canton High School, Betty attended Syracuse University for three years before venturing far from home with her best friend, Helen Van Ornum, to study business and secretCourier science at Katharine Gibbs School in Boston where she graduated. While at Syracuse University, she was a member of Theta Alpha Phi and was president during her junior year. Betty was then appointed to a secretCourier position with the federal government in Washington, D.C., just prior to World War II. There she met R.E. (“Dick”) Hilton, a native of Finland and an accountant for the federal government, and they were married on November 29, 1941. Betty and Dick lived and worked in the Washington area for many years until they retired and moved to Florida in 1975. In 1990, they moved to Arizona, where Dick died later that year. Betty then moved to San Jose, California, to be closer to family. She lived there until 1998, and then moved to Sonora, California, where she lived until her death, exactly 14 years to the day after Dick’s death. Betty loved to read Agatha Christie and Jane Austen novels and was an avid crossword puzzle solver. But most of all, she loved her family. She had a sweet, nurturing soul and survived many of life’s challenges with an unfailing sense of humor and a gentle strength. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Betty, Dick, and their three girls spent many happy summers in Canton visiting the St. Lawrence Inn and at Cranberry Lake. One of Betty’s favorite quotes from Garrison Keillor expresses how she felt about home, family, and Canton: “God in his grace had removed our town beyond the force of time, beyond change, and placed it on a hill by a blue lake on an eternal perfect day in mid-September where those whom we love will always be as they are now.”
