Born August 19, 1916, in Pyrites, NY a daughter of the late Edward and Bernice Dean Brooks, she attended Canton Schools. On August 31, 1937, she married Earl Planty in Malone. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm on the Canton-Morley Road from 1943 until 1976 when Mr. Planty retired. Mrs. Planty was also employed at the County Home under Mr. Finley from 1935 – 1937. She also worked at St. Lawrence University, Chaney Dining Hall in food service and later for Canton ATC from 1968 to 1983 when she retired. Mrs. Planty enjoyed farming, her gardens and especially her grandchildren.
Richard K. Race, 68, 901 Tracy Road, died on August 17, 2007 at his home in Morley. The funeral will be August 21, 2007 at 11:00 AM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Mr. Race died Friday, August 17, 2007 at his home while under the care of his family and Hospice and Palliative Care. He had been ill with pulmonary fibrosis and heart related problems. Born May 5, 1939 in Ogdensburg, the son of the late John W. and Susan Kenny Race, he graduated from Canton Central School in 1957 and from Canton A.T.I. in 1959. Mr. Race owned and operated a dairy farm on the Canton-Morley Road from 1962-1986. He sold the farm and went to work at KRAFT Foods in Canton, retiring in June of 2001 after 16 years of service. On August 12, 1989 he married Alice E. Guyette at the Morley Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Scott Thompson officiating. Surviving besides his wife are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Allan of Worcester, MA, Andrew and his wife Jennifer Filipowski Race of Winston-Salem, NC and Kevin Race and wife Amy of Fredericksburg, VA; three step-children, Robert Reynolds of Morristown, Mrs. Warren (Susan) Deuel of Fulton and Mrs. James (Wendy) Lewis of Syracuse; a brother-in-law, Lowell Nicholson of Heuvelton; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Ethel Nicholson, Mrs. Floyd (Edna) Newcombe and a niece Betsy Eggleston. Mr. Race enjoyed woodworking, watching the deer in his yard and doing crossword puzzles.

Jr. died Oct. 6, 1999 and a brother Courtland died Jan. 16, 1996. Born Feb. 13, 1920 in Pierrepont son of Everett John and Hazel Julia Fallon Ostrander he attended Colton and Canton schools. He married Kathryn Louise Strate, on May 25, 1943 at her parent’s home in Crary Mills. Mr. and Mrs. Ostrander were married 61 years, she died July21, 2004 The couple owned and operated a dairy farm on the Howardville Road until it was sold due to illness in 1951; he was later employed by Putman and Hawley Construction Company in Potsdam, where he was involved with the St. Lawrence Seaway Project. In 1961 he owned and operated the Langdon Farm at Langdon’s Corners until he retired. After retirement he worked at Canton Central School for approximately 10 years. Mr. Ostrander was an active member of the Crary Mills Presbyterian Church where he served on the church session; a Canton School Board member; member of the Crary Mills Grange and leader in the 4H Club “Husky workers”. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, family, and friends. After retirement he enjoyed trucking cattle and attending the DeKalb Cattle Auctions with his brother Court. Born May 28, 1954 in Glen Ridge, NJ, a son of Bryan Conway and Joyce Eleanor Kruger Ringo, he graduated Canton High School in 1972, where he was a member of the wrestling team, the orchestra and chorus. In 1976 he graduated SUNY Albany with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts. Mr. Ringo was a self-employed Coin and Collectables Dealer. He was a Professional Numismatic, dealing in Colonial coins, tokens, half cents and large cents. Prior to starting his own business he worked for a coin shop in Latham, NY. He enjoyed traveling around the United States and Europe buying and selling and most recently was an E-Bay trader online. He was a well known and respected member of the American Numimatics Society. Mr. Dawley was born March 5, 1951 in Ogdensburg, the son of Glenn Gordon and Eileen Ames Dawley, he graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School in 1969 and attended Oswego State University. He married Joan Lambert and later Glennwyn Stevens, both marriages ended in divorce. Mr. Dawley worked for St. Lawrence University Dining Hall during high school, started doing siding with Bellingers Roofing and later started his own business, GT Siding installing vinyl and aluminum siding, windows and insulation. He was a true craftsman residing and installing windows for the parsonage for the Canton United Methodist Church, also did siding at St. Lawrence University on some of there buildings and homes. He was hired by numerous residents of Canton. Mr. Dawley was a member of the Morley Fire Dept. and BPOE Ogdensburg 772 Some of his interests were raising appaloosa horses riding Motorcycles and having his solitude, he was known by many as a Quiet man. Born September 7, 1945, in Gouverneur, a daughter of the late Kermit Harrison and Marion Irene Neddo Woodward, she graduated Gouverneur High School in 1963, where she was a cheerleader and played in the marching band. Shortly after high school she entered the US AirForce where she served for one year. On February 12, 1965 she married Clifton Ronald Allen at the Methodist Church in Gouverneur. The marriage was celebrated by the Rev. Stanley Brown. The family resided in Gouverneur for numerous years. Mrs. Allen was employed as a retail manager for McCrory’s Dept. Store in Watertown starting in the late 70’s thru the early 90’s when she retired. Prior to her career with McCrory’s, she worked for Bradley Electric building vacuum cleaner motors for Eureka and Blue Luster. She also worked at Faichney’s Instrument Co. ,also in Watertown, where she was involved in the making of thermometers. She used to attend the BPOE Lodge in Gouverneur with her father in the mid 1960’s and enjoyed playing on a co-ed bowling league with her husband. Mrs. Allen enjoyed watching sports, especially football, golf and the Olympics, particularly the girls gymnastics. She also enjoyed bowling, watching deer, rabbits and hummingbirds and outdoor activities. She was always willing to help after a good day of hunting. Most recently her true passion was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also concerned for there well being.

Born February 21, 2007 in Dickinson Center, a daughter of Homer Arthur and Amelia Duquette Dennis, she attended Dickinson Union School and later received her GED in 1996. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Canton. On October 12, 1947, she married Howard Albert Shorette at the home of Howard’s parents in Malone, NY. Mrs. Shorette had worked at Santamorr’s Flower Shop for 12 years and was also a domestic for area families for a number of years. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and caring for the family home, as well as, sewing, baking and cooking.

Mr. Rogerson was predeceased by a son Peter. Born December 9, 1940 in Stoke-on Trent, England, he was the son of Cuthbert Harry (MD) and Bettie Freeman DSc. He and his family moved to Baltimore, MD, in 1946 and he graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic School in 1958, received his bachelor’s degree from Haverford College in 1964 and his PhD in molecular biology from Dartmouth College in 1969. On April 27, 1960, he married Phoebe Hope Northrop in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Rogerson taught at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania from 1970-1976. In 1976 he moved his family to Fort Valley, Georgia, to head a research group studying biologic nitrogen fixation. In 1979 he joined the biology faculty at St. Lawrence University. While at St. Lawrence he chaired the biology department from 1979 to 1986. In 1992 he received the Maslow Award for excellence in teaching. Mr. Rogerson retired in August of 2003 at the rank of full Professor. Mr. Rogerson had been an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Canton since 1979. He served on the vestry, as a warden, as a chalice bearer, as a lay Eucharistic minister, and in numerous other capacities. For him, one of the most satisfying ministries was accompanying the rector on visits to shut-ins. He also was active in Episcopal Cursillo. He was a volunteer reader for the sight-impaired at North Country Public Radio. One of Mr. Rogerson’s passions was the Family cottage on Tomahawk Island in Georgian Bay, Ontario. He spent as much time there during the summer as he could. Enjoying boating, canoeing, fishing, and kayaking. The ambience and the scenery never ceased to delight him. It was a wonderful time to read and listen to music. Another of his passions was travel. In April and May of this year he traveled from Brazil to Greece.

He is also remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Davis was predeceased by two sisters Naomi Kuhl and Lorene Swiger and a brother Hoy Davis. Born April 18, 1911 in Guff, West Virginia, son of the late William Lee and Ida May Leasburg Davis, he was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army and US Navy from 1944 to 1945. On October 27, 1934 he married Macy Elizabeth Mouthorp at the Canton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Carter as the celebrant. Mr. Davis along with his wife ran the greenhouse at the NY School of Agriculture ( SUNY Canton ) until its closure. He later received his electrician’s certificate and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union # 910. The couple also ran a hobby greenhouse at their home for over 60 years. Most recently Mr. Davis enjoyed going to McCarthy’s and the Cascade for coffee and to try his luck at Quickdraw. He also enjoyed a good joke and was known to joke and tease various friends and neighbors.

Later she graduated Canton ATI in 1935. In the late 1930’s working as a Dietician for Beechnut Foods during the World’s Fair, Mrs. Donnelly met James A. Donnelly. The couple married on November 26, 1938 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in NYC. Mr. Donnelly died May 30, 1982. Mrs. Donnelly was a long time resident of 8 Lawrence Avenue, Malone. While in Malone, she was a communicant for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She also enjoyed her vegetable gardening.

On June 30, 1984, she married Ronald T. Van Brocklin at the Colton United Methodist Church. The marriage ended in divorce. Mrs. Van Brocklin worked for over 35 years in the food services at St. Lawrence University, as a cook and cashier, retiring in early 2006. Mrs. Van Brocklin enjoyed her family and friends and the many friends and students she met while working at St. Lawrence, often hearing from them. She also enjoyed area casino slot machines, flower gardening and traveling.

After graduating from Canton ATC in 1942 and service in the US Army, he also graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY with a Chemical Engineering Degree. On June 27, 1948, he married Betty Jane Paro at the Grace Episcopal Church in Canton, NY. Mr. Golding was employed by Vanderbilt Minerale Corp, Division of R.T. Vanderbilt Co, in New York, Kentucky and Connecticut for 45 years, starting as Plant Engineer, then as Plant Manager, General Manager, Salesman, and Vice President of the VMC Manufacturing Division before retiring in 1993. He was a member and past president of the Industrial Management Club, Norwalk, and a charter member of the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He was a charter member of the Century Club and member of the Board of Directors of the Canton College Foundation and a member of the SUNY Canton Alumni Council. In 1990, The Cleo J. Golding Scholarship was established at SUNY Canton. He participated in the establishment of the Clarkson Class of ’47 Endowed Scholarship. Mr. Golding played basketball and baseball in college and was a member of Zeta Alpha Phi fraternity. He was a member of Pasttimes Athletic Club in Norwalk and enjoyed playing golf, sports in general, summers on the St. Lawrence and traveling.

A memorial service for Ruth R. Walker, 84, of 35 Riverside Drive, who died Thursday, February 8, 2007, will be held Saturday, May 5, 2007, at 11:00 AM at the Scotch Presbyterian Church, Chipman Road, Madrid with Pastor Noel Allen officiating. Burial will be held privately in Madrid Cemetery. Box 291, Canton, NY 13617. Mrs. Walker died at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where she was a resident since Jan 16, 2007. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norma Jean Coloton and husband Gary of Canton; one son, James Robert Walker of Felts Mills; one sister and brother-in-law, Norma Marjory Pease and husband Robert W. of Gowanda, NY; four grandchildren, Kevin J. Coloton and his wife Dominique of Silver Spring, MD, Kelly J. Coloton of Ogdensburg, William F. Walker of Felts Mills and James A. Walker of Lowville, NY; one great-granddaughter, Catalina Rose Coloton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Walker was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd S. Rose and William A. Rose; a sister, Dorothy Jean Graham and by a granddaughter, Kerrie Ann, who died Feb 14, 1977. Born October 29, 1922 in Stephentown, NY, daughter of Henry Arthur and Edith May Saxby Rose, she was a graduate of Lebanon High School in 1940 and later graduated in 1942 from Canton ATI with an Associates degree in Foods and Diet Therapy. On October 9, 1943 she married William Randall Walker at the home of Mrs. Walker’s aunt in Stephentown, NY, with the Rev. Oscar Arnold, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating. Mrs. Walker met her husband while attending college and moved to Chipman area, where the couple ran a jersey cow farm. Mr. Walker died March 27, 1976. She first worked fulltime at the Dunlop Nursing Home in Madrid starting in 1942, changing to part-time after her marriage, filling in when ever her help was needed. She then worked as an Avon Lady for 15 years. From 1968-1979 she worked for Madrid-Waddington Central School and from 1979-1983 she worked in food service for Canton College, where she retired in 1983. Mrs. Walker was a member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Madrid, where she was a member of the PW Ladies (Presbyterian Women). She also volunteered for the Church and Community Worker Program. She was also a member of the St. Lawrence County Jersey Club. In her spare time, Mrs. Walker enjoyed knitting and refinishing furniture. She also collected antiques.
Cleo J. Golding, 82, 6801 West Poly Webb, Arlington, Texas and formerly of Canton, died on March 8, 2007 at Community Hospice Loving Hearts Home in Arlington, Texas. The funeral will be May 25, 2007 at 2:15 pm, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Margaret H. Stalder, 84, 303 Chapman Point, Morristown, died on March 8, 2007 at Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown. The funeral will be March 12, 2007 at 10:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.
Funeral for Mrs. Margaret H. “Peg” Stalder, 84, 303 Chapman Point, Morristown and Naples, Florida and formerly of 2 Crescent Street, Canton, will be Monday morning 10:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Morristown. Mrs. Stalder died Thursday morning March 8, at the Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown. Born on February 15, 1923 in the town of Orleans, she was the daughter of Gifford and Mary Marie Getman Haller. She graduated from Lafargeville High School in 1941 and then attended Watertown School of Business, On June 18, 1949, she married William D. “Bill” Stalder in the Concordia Lutheran Church in Watertown, with Rev. Frederick Vogt, officiating. Mr. Stalder died November 7, 2004. Mrs. Stalder was the lead trumpet player for the Lafargeville High School Marching Band at the dedication of the opening of the Thousand Islands Bridge, an event attended by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mrs. Stalder worked at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Watertown, then at the Farm Bureau in Ithaca, before she and her husband moved to Canton in 1952. After her husband purchased Carl Witherbee’s share of Witherbee and Whalen, a monument, burial vault and septic tank business on Hodskin Street, Canton in 1955, she assisted in the Business Office. While in Canton, she was a past board member of the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club, active in the Canton Republican Women’s Club involved in the Canton High School Student Exchange Program. In 1963, the couple purchased a camp in the village of Morristown. Later the couple wintered in the Vanderbilt Beach section of Naples, Florida. In the past Mrs. Stalder enjoyed snowmobiling at the Stillwater Club in the town of Clare and fishing at Club Mekoos in Quebec. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home.

James A. Todd, 80, of 59 Gouverneur Street, Canton died March 7, 2007 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center, Burlington VT., where he had been a patient since March 2nd. Funeral will be Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 1:00 PM from Brick Chapel Church, Canton with the Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro , pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Canton officiating. Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 9th and Saturday, March 10th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Canton. Surviving are three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Francis and Arloween Todd of St. Cloud, Florida, Lawrence and Joan Todd of Gouverneur, Richard and Mary Todd of Colton and Julie Todd of Canton; two sisters Eleanor Rood of Rochester and Avis Ragan of Canton; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mr. Todd will also be remembered by a devoted neighbor and friend, Emmy Westdijk of Canton. He was predeceased by one brother, Albert Todd and one sister, Thelma McCollum. Born March 3, 1927 in the Town of Pierrepont, a son of Austin James and Flossie Mae Robinson Todd, he attended Howard School District #6 thru grade 8 in Pierrepont and graduated Canton High School in 1944. Mr. Todd furthered is education at the Albright Art School in Buffalo graduating with honors in 1948. From there he went to Buffalo State Teachers College graduating with honors and receiving his Bachelor’s in Art Education in 1949. In the summer of 1954 he graduated St. Lawrence University with a Master’s of Education in School Administration. He had also took classes at SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Geneseo, RIT in Rochester and a Spanish Institute in Saltillo, Mexico. Mr. Todd was a veteran of the US Army serving from 1946-1947 and was sent to Korea with Co. 132nd Infantry Regiment 7th Division occupation forces in Chun Chon prior to the Korean Conflict. He later joined the US Army Reserves serving from 1952-1955 where he earned the rank of Sergeant and was an instructor from 1954-1955. During his extensive 35 year teaching career, Mr. Todd taught at Williamson Central School in Williamson, NY in Wayne County from 1949-1984. He started teaching art grades 1 thru 12 ; later just grade 9-12th ; and in 1968 just high school when he started teaching public speaking. He was also Director of Adult Education in the early 50’s. He held various offices in the local and county Art Teachers Associations; he was President of Williamson Central School Faculty Assoc., Wayne County Art Teacher’s Assoc. and the Central Western Zone Art Teacher’s Assoc. He also taught Drama; directed, produced, built sets and did make-up for school and class plays and musicals as well as, organized the Drama Club. He also was a Class Advisor and Student Council Advisor; Year Book advisor; Junior High School Bowling Team Coach; and chaperoned numerous, dances, trips and parties. Some of the honors he received through out his years of teaching were Teacher of the Year 1980, Board of Education Distinguished Educator 1981 and Year Book Dedication 1982 among others. Mr Todd was involved with numerous Memberships and organizations including: Life Member of National Education Association; life member of NY State Retired Teachers Assoc; NYSUT; member of Wayne County Retired Teachers Assoc.; Member of Noerthern Zone and Central Western Zone Retired Teachers Assoc.; member and three President of St. Lawrence Area Retired Teachers; Life member of Hermon Heritage and Norfolk Historical Society; American Legion Post #1342 of Lisbon, NY; Member of Heuvelton Historical Assoc; Pulaski Historical Assoc.; St. Lawrence County Historical Assoc. and the Pultneyville Historical Assoc. He was also a member of Salmon River Fine Arts Center, Pulaski, NY; Alpha Honorary Society and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society; Aulumni of Sigma Tau Gamma National Fraternity; Alumni of Buffalo State Teachers College (SUNY Buffalo); member of the Canton Goldenaires Barbershop Chorus, where he was Vice President for Membership 4 years and named Barbershopper of the Year in 1997; Member and President of the Pultneyville Players. Mr. Todd was a Life Member of Brick Chapel Church in Canton, where he was an Elder and Trustee. Community Services included Friends of the New Canton Fire Station and Christmas Holiday of Lights Committee in Canton. Mr. Todd sponsored a boy in Ecuador since 1998 through Children International and also sponsored a boy through Foster Parents before the Vietnam War. In his spare time Mr. Todd enjoyed teaching Calligraphy; collecting cups and saucers of all sizes and varieties. He also enjoyed poetry and wrote four books; “Memories and Musings”, “More Memories and Musings”, “Chocolate Cake & Mustard” and “Hokey Diddle”. He also enjoyed his camp on Higley Flow in South Colton since the 1950’s.
