Arthur Scott King, Jr., 84, of 30 Sullivan Drive, Canton, died Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at the United Helpers Canton Nursing Home after a short stay. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 3, 2007, at 4:15 PM from the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro, pastor of First Presbyterian Church Canton officiating. Calling hours will be Saturday from 2-4 pm at the funeral home, where the VFW Post 1231 Canton will stand color guard. Burial will be in the McKean Memorial Park in Bradford, PA on March 12, 2007 at 2:00 PM. Mr. King was predeceased by a brother William King. Born September 3, 1922, in Warren, PA a son of the late Arthur Scott and Reba Hurd King, Sr., he attended Bradford, PA area schools. He then entered the PA National Guard 112th Infantry in 1939 ***. On Feb. 17, 1941 he entered the 310th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division of the US Army. While in the Army during WWII he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and became a Prisoner of War; he was awarded with several medals including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation among many others, before being honorably discharged with rank of Sergeant on October 18, 1945. (call VFW for info ) On August 27, 1946, he married Rosemary Margaret Lloyd at the First Baptist Church in Orlean, NY with Rev. Shields T. Hardin as the celebrant. Mrs. King died June 5, 2004. After his military service, Mr. King became a police officer and motorcycle police officer for the City of Bradford, PA serving from 1948- 1956. Also in the late 1950’s he worked for Lauffenburger Construction Company in Bradford, specializing in stainless steel welding. The company primarily built and maintained oli storage tanks in the Bradford area. In the early 1960’s began his career with Corning Glass Company at the Bradford, PA Facility. Mr. King was instrumental in the start up of the security department as the company was securing various government contracts. He was later promoted to Production Supervisor of their newly emerging Fused Silica operation. Mr. King was also involved in the search for new plant locations in the state of New York. In 1966 Mr. King ,along with his family, relocated to Canton where he became part of the original management team for the newly constructed Canton Plant. Mr. King was well respected and admired by his fellow employees. In 1970 Mr. King opened with the George Hall Corp. opened the first “pump your-self” gas station and convenience store located on East Main Street in Canton. He later purchased Canton Taxi and renamed it Canton Taxi and Transportation, which he owned and operated until late 1987 when he officially retired. Mr. King was a member of various organizations including the Elks Club; the Canton Club, where he was a board member; the American Legion; the American Ex-Prisoners of War and most actively the Edward G. Seymour VFW Post 1231 Canton. Mr. King was an active life member of the VFW, serving as Commander from 1984-1993 (?). He was instrumental in restoring the club’s membership in his early years as Commander. He was a part-time bartender filling in when ever needed and often spent hours doing maintenance work. Due to his efforts, outstanding leadership and dedication to the club, the back room of the VFW was dedicated in his name. Mr. King was also All State Commander of the VFW for roughly five years in a row. He belonged to various bowling teams thru the years. In his early years in PA he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a baseball fan cheering for the NY Mets and any team who played the Yankees. Mr. King’s passion was golfing, he would play anytime he could. He belonged to many golf clubs including St. Lawrence Golf and Coutry Club and the Madrid Golf Club. While playing he won numerous trophies and got a hole-in-one in Madrid.

She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sanchez was predeceased by her father Doyle E. Remington in 2005. Born September 12, 1957 in Potsdam, a daughter of Mildred A. Brown Remington and the late Doyle Everett Remington, she graduated Colton-Pierrepont High School in 1975 and later graduated from Canton ATC in 1977 with an associates degree in veterinary science. She then went on to receive her bachelors degree in nursing from SUNY Canton. On January 5, 1979 she married Joseph W. Selleck. The marriage ended in divorce. On January 13, 2006 she married Nestor Sanchez in Bethesda, MD. Mrs. Sanchez worked in various veterinarian clinics in Potsdam, Massena and most recently in Maryland. She enjoyed playing tennis, reading and horse-back riding and had a love of animals.
Roberta McKenney Taylor, 94, Lemont , Illinois and formerly of 25 Park Street, Canton, died on Feb. 19, 2007 at the Lemont Nursing Home, Illinois. The funeral will be Feb. 24, 2007 at 10:30 am, at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton.

Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by two brothers, J. Manley McKenney and J. Richard McKenney. Born April 17, 1912 in Watertown, NY, a daughter of Winfred and Mildred Maybee McKenney, she was a graduate of Canton High School. In July 1929, she married Herman Rule “Squint” Taylor. Mr. Taylor died March 7, 1982. Upon graduation Mrs. Taylor worked doing office work at J.H. Maybee & Son, a coal and lumber business, in Canton. She later worked for Canton Central School as a secretary for 31 years from June 1943 until her retirement in 1974, where she served as secretary to Hugh C. Williams, the District Superintendent. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Study Club, the Postscript Club of the church and Daughters of the Nile. She was also an active member of the Historical Club, St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club and a life member of the St. Lawrence County Association of Educational Secretaries and a member of the State Association of Secretaries. Ruth R. Walker, 84, of 35 Riverside Drive, died Thursday, February 8, 2007, at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where she was a resident since Jan 16th. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norma Jean Coloton and husband Gary of Canton; one son, James Robert Walker of Felts Mills; one sister and brother-in-law, Norma Marjory Pease and husband Robert W. of Gowanda, NY; four grandchildren, Kevin J. Coloton and his wife Dominique of Silver Spring, MD, Kelly J. Coloton of Ogdensburg, William F. Walker of Felts Mills and James A. Walker of Lowville, NY; one great-granddaughter, Catalina Rose Coloton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Walker was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd S. Rose and William A. Rose; a sister, Dorothy Jean Graham and by a granddaughter, Kerrie Ann, who died Feb 14, 1977. Born October 29, 1922 in Stephentown, NY, daughter of Henry Arthur and Edith May Saxby Rose, she was a graduate of Lebanon High School in 1940 and later graduated in 1942 from Canton ATI with an Associates degree in Foods and Diet Therapy. On October 9, 1943 she married William Randall Walker in Stephentown, NY, with the Rev. Oscar Arnold, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating. Mrs. Walker met her husband while attending college and moved to Chipman area, where the couple ran a jersey cow farm. Mr. Walker died March 27, 1976. She first worked fulltime in food service at the Dunlop Nursing Home in Madrid starting in 1942, changing to part-time after her marriage, filling in when ever her help was needed. She then worked as an Avon Lady for 15 years. From 1968-1979 she worked for Madrid-Waddington Central School and from 1979-1983 she worked for Canton College, where she retired in 1983. Mrs. Walker was a member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Madrid, where she was a member of the PW Ladies (Presbyterian Women). She also volunteered for the Church and Community Worker Program. She was also a member of the St. Lawrence County Jersey Club. In her spare time, Mrs. Walker enjoyed knitting and refinishing furniture. She also collected antiques.

On August 27, 1940 she married Gerald F. Poole at Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. Beach as the celebrant. Mr. Poole died June 16, 1970. Mrs. Poole taught at the Alplaus School in Alplaus, NY and later at Canton, Central School, teaching kindergarten and first grade, retiring in 1975. She was also a member of Friends of the Canton Free Library.

On April 12, 1944 she married L. Everett Waite at the Zion Episcopal Church in Colton, NY with Rev. Walter P. Doty as the celebrant. Mrs. Waite worked at GLF ( Grange League Federation )in Canton, NY until 1946. Later she worked at Bangor Theological School, Bangor, ME, from 1960-1962. Upon moving to Batavia, NY she worked at Sears from 1967-1972. She was also a Ombudsman (spokes person) for patient rights at nursing homes in the Buffalo/ Orleans area, retiring in 1985. She also assisted her husband during his years as a Presbyterian Minister.
Bette Catherine Limpert Mayhew, , formerly of Canton, NY, died January 10, 2008 in Sun City, AZ. The funeral will be January 21, 2008 at 11 AM, at the St. Christophers Episcopal Church, Sun City, AZ.
Bette Catherine Limpert Mayhew was born February 16, 1918 in Ilion, NY, to Mathilde E. (Thaule) and Frederick L. Limpert and died January 10, 2008 in Sun City, AZ. She grew up in Ilion, graduating from Ilion High School in 1936. She attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY where she became a member of Psi Branch of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, graduating with a BS in 1940; she was also a member of mortarboard, an academic honorary society. She was an avid alumna her entire life, returning to the campus for her 65th reunion and serving in numerous ways over the decades. After graduating she became a Home Demonstration Agent with St. Lawrence County, traveling throughout the county assisting many of the families on farms with a variety of tasks. She and Karl M. Mayhew Jr. married on March 23, 1946 and lived in Canton, NY, about 40 years. Bette became Town Historian, involved in 4-H, worked tirelessly for the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club from the mid 50s through the early 70s, was active in Grace Episcopal Church, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and Canton Garden Club. Over the years she hosted foreign exchange students and visitors to St. Lawrence University. Bette returned to school in the mid 1960s to complete her teaching degree and then taught Home Economics in the Madrid-Waddington School District until retiring in 1979. She spent summers in Canton and winters in Sun City until 2001. She was very active in Sun City as a long-time member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, local president for AAUW and Kappa, a lawn bowler, a traveler within AZ and to nearby states. She also enjoyed trips across the USA, to Mexico, Europe, South America and Thailand. Since June 12, 2004, she’s been a beloved resident of Encore Senior Village at Peoria, a Specialized Alzheimer’s Care Community. Bette is preceded in death by her husband Karl Mayhew Jr. and her brother Fred (Fritz) Limpert. She is survived by her children: Stella Ardire and significant other Dave Renn of Tolleson, AZ; Grayce Elizabethe Mayhew of Sun City, AZ; James and daughter-in-law Sharon Mayhew of Vancouver, WA; and Karl Mayhew III of Ogdensburg, NY; her granddaughters: Meredith and grandson-in-law Carl Poggi-Jenkins of Flagstaff, AZ; Amanda Mayhew of Highlands Ranch, CO; and Grace Mayhew of Peru, NY; her great-grandson Alden Rhys Poggi-Jenkins of Flagstaff, AZ; her cousin Marge W. Mrs. Frank married James Merrill Frank on November 25, 1947, at the home of Walter Butler in Canton. Mr. Frank died Oct. 4, 1999. Mrs. Frank worked at JJ Newberry’s Store in Canton a year before her marriage, baby sat for many children in the Canto area for several years and owned and operated a children’s clothing store “Nana’s Kid’s” out of her home and later on Main Street in Canton with her daughter-in-law Laura. Mrs. Frank was a past member of the Canton Farm Bureau, St. Paul’s Alter and Rosary Society in Pyrites President and Board member of the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Was a communicant of St. Thomas More Newman Center and St. Mary’s Church in Canton. Mrs. Frank enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren knitting reading and gardening vegetables.

On May 6, 1950 he married Eva Baker at Dixison Landing, Ontario. Mrs. MacLennan died November 1983. For 21 yrs. from 1950-1971 he worked for Durkees Bakery then for Ward Baking Co., also known as Tip Top , for 8 years and eventually for Stroehmann Bakery, Potsdam, where he retired in 1990. Mr. MacLennan was a member of a number of organizations including, St. Mary’s Church, Canton, the VFW, Men’s Auxillary, Edward C. Seymour, Post 1231, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 2074 in Potsdam, the Moose Lodge in Potsdam and was a past member of the Canton Club. He also served as President of Evergreen Cemetery for two years and continued to serve as a board member. However, his true passion was serving his community through Canton Fire and Rescue, where he had been active since 1961 and served as member at large on the executive board.

Mr. St. Pier was devoted to his wife “Candy” with whom he’s been since August 28, 1974. The marriage took place at the couples home in DeKalb by Pastor Bill Scott. While working, he was a van driver for St. Lawrence County ARC and also worked part-time for Elmer and Edith Denesha in DeKalb prior to 1987. Mr. St. Pier was a past member of the DeKalb Jct. Volunteer Fire Dept., where he also served as Fire Commissioner; past member of the NY State Fire Police and he was a member the AMVETS, Post #11 in DeKalb. He enjoyed listening to the bands and the country music at the AMVETS, Post #11 in DeKalb, where he also enjoyed dancing. He was also a collector of pocket and wrist watchs, Zippo lighters and die cast muscle cars.

She was predeceased by her husband John P. Zeh on March 21, 1997 and a son, Rev. Warren Rodee Zeh on January 31, 1996. Born January 5, 1927, in Canton, NY a daughter of the late Bernard and Etta Aldous Rodee she was a graduate of Canton High School, class of 1944 and later from Canton College in 1946. On September 3, 1949, she married John P. Zeh in the Brick Chapel Church, Canton. The couple moved to Oneida, NY in 1951 and stayed until 1964 when Mr. Zeh took work in Horseheads. Mrs. Zeh was a long time resident of Canton, Oneida and Horseheads, NY, where she was active in each area Presbyterian Church, including the Brick Chapel Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Horseheads, where she served as an Elder and a Deacon. She was also a member and Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Oneida Chapter, as well as, actively involved in both Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and also several Bridge Clubs. Prior to her retirement from the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Dietary Department in Elmira, NY, she worked (before marriage) at New Rochelle Hospital in the Hudson Valley area and later at Schuyler Hospital in Horseheads.
Everett H. VanHyning, 84, formerly of Heuvelton and Lisbon, died on December 11, 2007 at United Helpers Nursing Home in Ogdensburg. The funeral will be Saturday, December 15 from 2 to 4, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Mr. VanHyning owned and operated from 1960-1970 three grocery stores in the area, named VanHyning’s Grocery located in Canton, Langdon Corners (CraryMills) and in Lisbon. He later went into the antique business until 1985, when he retired and moved to Heuvelton. The business was known as Van’s Antiques located along the St. Lawrence River in Lisbon, NY. He collected primitive and wood-working and unusual tools, as well as, early American furniture. Mr. VanHyning was a member of the St. Lawrence Lodge # 111 Masons in Canton since 1945. Born on March 7, 1934, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Harry Decker Johnston and Lillian Clara Howard, she graduated from Newtonville High School in Massachusetts in 1951. She then graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1955 where she was a member of the Tri-Delta sorority, and also received her master’s degree in education from the same institution. She married James A. Chisholm on September 3, 1955 at the Lancaster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Selch. Mr. Chisholm died November 7, 2000. Mrs. Chisholm started her teaching career at Canton High School the day after her marriage as a Math and Science teacher and taught for over 30 years. She was the first teacher In Canton to teach 9th grade algebra, to advanced 8th grade students. After retirement, she enjoyed taking numerous classes at SUNY Potsdam. She was a member of the Canton Garden Club, Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey, Investment Club, Study Club, Retired Teachers of New York State, Post-Script with the Presbyterian Church in Canton, and St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club. An avid SLU Hockey Fan, she had many of the Hockey player’s family’s stay at her home for various games and functions. Mrs. Chisholm summered at the family home at Point Comfort in the Town of Morristown on the St. Lawrence River, having the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner in August for 40-50 guests in attendance. She also enjoyed traveling and cruising. As a longtime bridge player, Mrs. Chisholm enjoyed playing with friends in Canton, and also “Lunch Brunch” with the ladies. Her love for animals, especially “King” and her other golden retrievers, were also prevalent in her life. Her positive outlook on life will be greatly missed by all.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Skelton, who died May 25, 2003; three sisters, Mildred Murray, Marion Cassens and Margaret Munson; two brothers, Lloyd and George Brown; and a cousin, Clisson Brown. Born January 28, 1923, in the town of Canton, son of the late Leon David and Harriet Almira Shaw Brown, he graduated Canton High School, where he served as Class Treasurer and was active in Future Farmers of America. On August 28, 1948, he married Jane Elizabeth Woodworth at the First Baptist Church in Canton with Rev. A.J. Coffey as the celebrant. Mrs. Brown died June 8, 1999. After high school Mr. Brown bought property on the Canton-Russell Road and started and ran a dairy farm until mid 1950’s. He then owned and operated a gas station at the current site of the Kunoco Store on the Canton-Russell Road. He sold the station to Beth Gibo in 1959. Later in 1959 he founded owned and operated Brown’s Dodge which he ran until 1973, when he sold the business to Bill Perry, and retired at the age of 50. He later sold real estate part- time for Plumbly Real Estate. The couple wintered in Claremont, FL for many years until 1999, when the couple moved back to Canton. Mr. Brown was an active member of the Canton and Claremont Rotary Clubs, where he sold the most tickets for the pancake breakfasts. He was also a member of the Morgan Horse Association, the New York State Blue Bird Association and the First Baptist Church, Canton, where he also served as a Deacon for many years. Mr. Brown had a farm pond built on his property in the shape of the State of New York. He raised “Boxer” dogs and “Morgan” Horses and enjoyed showing them. While on the farm he enjoyed making maple syrup and being in the woods amongst the wildlife he was so fond of. In his earlier years enjoyed fox hunting, and skeet shooting out back of the dealership, while in his later years he enjoyed building blue bird houses. Mr. Brown is the last of his generation of family and will be remembered for his dry sense of humour which included the teasing of his close friends and neighbors. Born February 24, 1921 in Canton, NY, a son of the late John Henry and Elizabeth Fitzgerald Leonard, he graduated DeKalb High School in 1939. He later attended Professional Schools through Aetna Insurance Co. Mr. Leonard was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII from 1942 to 1945. He attained the rank of Sergeant. On July 31, 1943, he married Dorothy Gilson Todd in Blytheville, AR. Mr. Leonard was Director Emeritus of Canton Federal Savings and Loan (North Country Savings Bank). He also ran an insurance agency on Main Street, Canton for 50 years and was a founding partner of Dompnier - Leonard Insurance and Real Estate in 1946. He was Past President of Canton Lions Club; Past member of the Canton Fire Department; and member of the BPOE Ogdensburg. Mr. Leonard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Canton. He was actively involved in the formation of the Canton Pee Wee Organization in the early 1950’s.

Lawrence F. Fountain, 80, of 4191 S.H. 56, died Friday, November 2, 2007 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born September 16, 2007, in the town of Clare, a son of Basil and Elsie Curtis Fountain, he attended the one room schoolhouse in West Pierrepont, NY. Mr. Fountain was drafted into th US Army in 1945 serving two years as an Army Corporal in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1947 at Ft. Dix, NJ. He later reenlisted in the Army in 1950 and served in the Marshall Islands, for 14 months after being in Hawaii, the Johnson Islands, Japan and Korea. He received his second honorable discharge on Aug. 14, 1953. Through “Operation Recognition” , a joint venture of the federal gov’t and the state education department for students who left high school to serve their country before graduating, Mr. Fountain was presented his high school diploma on March 17, 2007, at a ceremony conducted at his home in the presence of his very proud family. On December 22, 1952, while in the service, he married Betty Green, his wife of nearly 55 years, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Fountain was employed at various places including the Town of Pierrepont Highway Dept. He and his wife later owned and operated “Betty’s Bar & Grill” in Cooks Corners and also “Betty’s Tavern” in South Colton. Mr. Fountain is an Honorary Member of the Pierrepont Fire Dept. and a past member of the Cold Springs and Campbell Hill Hunting Clubs, as well as, the Boondockers Snowmobile Club, the Potsdam VFW and a life member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans). He also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family playing cards, hunting, fishing and cooking. Surviving in addition to his wife Betty of South Colton are three sons, Dale and Helen Fountain of S. Colton, Randy Fountain and wife Kathy of North Carolina and Larry Dean Fountain of Colton; three daughters, Judy and Gene Aldous of Colton, Sally Long af Pierrepont, and Shelly Brennan of Manlius, NY; three brothers, Allen Fountain of Syracuse, Arnold and wife Emma of Russell and Raymond and wife Joyce of Pyrites; two sisters, Beverly “Betty” Beachard of Russell and Belva “Joan” Matthews and husband Howard of Illinois; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Born in Chicago, Ill on July 9, 1929, she was the daughter of Leland K. and Margaret Cook Thomas and graduated from York High School in Villa Park, Ill. On August 18, 1951, she married Orrin L. Taylor in the Canton United Methodist Church, with Rev. Charles Williams, officiating. Mr. Taylor died April 3, 2004. For seven years from 1984-1991, she worked as a teacher’s aide for St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES. Mrs. Taylor then worked at the Bing Stevens Store in Canton. A former Den Mother for Cub Scouts, she was a member of the Canton United Methodist Church and enjoyed camping, cross country skiing, reading, gardening and was an avid supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Mr. Simmons was predeceased by a son Rory Simmons who died as an infant; six brothers, Schuyler, Clinton, Alfred, Hudson, Donald and Jay; five sisters, Phoebe Todd, Marjorie Fenton, Beulah Simmons, Mildred Johnson and Geraldine Simmons. Born March 20, 1937 a son of the late Jasper and Flora Richer Simmons, he attended Kendrew School and later Heuvelton School. On December 17, 1965, he married Bonita Tynon at the Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg, NY. The marriage ended in divorce. Mr. Simmons worked for KRAFT Foods in Canton and later for his brother, Donald Simmons Construction in Heuvelton as a carpenter. He most recently worked for Brang Construction a concrete construction company in Fayetteville, NY until 1984 when illness was forced into early retirement. He was a past member of the AMVETS in Heuvelton and was an avid NASCAR fan with his favorite driver being Clint Bowyer #07. He also enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting around the area, as well as, playing cards mostly Pedro, Pitch, Hearts and Liar’s Poker. He especially enjoyed his family.

Mrs. Mead was predeceased by an infant brother Ronnie Long Stanley. Born February 26, 1936 in Highland, IL she was a daughter of the late James Rudolph and Martha Rose Long Stanley, she graduated Edwardsville, IL High School in 1954. On October 29, 1954, she married Raymond “Joe” Mead at the Scott Air Force Base Chapel in Illinois with Chaplain Lt. USAF Kenneth J. Nettles as the celebrant. Mrs. Mead worked for the Army Air Force Exchange System in Tacoma, Washington, while her husband was overseas serving in the USAF. She and the family then returned to Canton where she worked at Canton Elementary School in the cafeteria. The family also lived in New Zealand for roughly three years before moving back to Canton and building a home on the Old DeKalb Road. Upon her return she went to work for Britt’s, then Ames Department store. Later she took a management position at Bouyea’s Bakery. The couple sold their home in 2002 and became “snow birds” traveling the US in the fall and winter months in the travel trailer. During the months of April through October they stayed at their home on the Tully Road. Mrs. Mead enjoyed traveling with her husband visiting family along the way, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, as well as, canning vegetables and making jellies. Elizabeth “Libby” Pike Jones, 94, of 65 E. Main Street, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007 at her home while under the care of her daughter and Hospice and Palliative Care. She was predeceased by a brother, John Pike in 1978 and a sister, Virginia Homer in 1977. Born September 18, 1912 in Boston, Mass, daughter of the late Frederick and Elsie Gordon Reid Pike, she graduated Girls Latin School in Boston in 1930. She then went to Mt. Holyoke College where she graduated in 1934. While there she spent her junior year (1932-1933) in Munich, Germany and witnessed Adolf Hitler coming to power. On July 2, 1941 she married Harriman Jones in Boston. Mr. Jones died October 6, 1986. Mrs. Jones taught German at Westbrook Jr. College in Portland, ME from 1938-1941 and worked as Catalogue Librarian, responsible for cataloguing both German and Dutch books, at Widener Library at Harvard University in Cambridge from 1943-1957. In 1957 the family moved to Canton, NY where she joined the staff at St. Lawrence University Library until her retirement in 1978. Mrs. Jones had also lived in France on three different occasions, 1965-66, 1970-71 and 1978-79, with her husband who was Director of the Junior Year Abroad Program of St. Lawrence University. In July of 2006 she participated in Story Corp Interview, which was co-sponsored by Nat’l Public Radio and the Library of Congress. Some of her hobbies and interests included travel, especially to museums in Europe and reading until illness forced her to stop. After the death of her husband, she was very fond of her pets, her first cat “Tommie” and later “Blackie Jones”.
Mary Ruth Judd, 88, formerly of Farnes Road, Canton, died on September 10, 2007 at her daughters home in Watertown. The funeral will be September 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM, at the Crary Mills Presbyterian Church.
Mary Ruth (Beaman) Judd died on September 10, 2007 in the loving company of her daughter, Marilyn Gibson, with whom she had made her home since April. Born September 13, 1918 in Malone, Mary Ruth was the eldest child of Daniel Walker Beaman and Beatrice Reynolds Beaman. She was predeceased by her brothers Paul, Frank, and Donald Beaman. Mrs. Judd was the widow of Herbert F. Judd of Crary Mills, New York, whom she married October 15, 1983 and who died May 5, 2006. She was the former wife of Carl S. Marney and lived many years in Ogdensburg. Mary Ruth is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Gibson of Watertown and Anita Harris and husband Thomas of Ballston Spa, her beloved grandsons, Michael George Gibson and his wife Michelle of Brewerton, and Timothy Ross Harris and his fiancée Stacey of Saratoga Springs, her sister, Lucile Beaman McGarrah of Media, PA, her sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Beaman, widow of Frank, and Sarah (Nancy) Beaman, widow of Donald. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, by Herb’s family in Crary Mills, and by her faithful friends who brought her joy and with whom she shared many, many laughs. Mary Ruth graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1935 and from Canton ATI (SUNY) in 1938 with a degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Alphi Chi Omicron sorority. She remained in close contact with her classmates from both schools and was named Distinguished Alumna at SUNY Canton in 1986. Mary Ruth provided the Alumni Office with updates on SUNY alumni until her health declined. Genealogical research and local history were passions she shared with her husband, Herb, and they both enjoyed a long-time relationship with the St. Lawrence County Historical Association where they were avid volunteers and to which they were pleased to bequeath their collection of historical documents and artifacts Mary Ruth’s research formed the basis for a number of articles in the Quarterly, and she liked nothing more than unraveling a truly knotty historical puzzle. Herb and Mary Ruth were honored by the SLCHA with life memberships and the dedication of the Herbert F. and Mary Ruth Judd Gallery at the Silas Wright House in 2002 after more than 40 years of service. Staff and volunteers of SLCHA became her extended family. Mary Ruth loved sewing and gardening, going to auctions, finding treasures, especially antique sewing machines, to restore, her precious dogs and cats, talking with school children about lifestyles in days gone by, and keeping up a lively correspondence with old and new friends and fellow researchers. As a mom in Ogdensburg, Mary Ruth was active in PTA, led a Brownie troop, worked and volunteered at the AB Hepburn Hospital and with the Red Cross. As matriarch of the Beaman family, she was the glue which united us. When one member sneezed in Pennsylvania, “Bless you’s” rained in from family across the country. Family was her delight and her comfort. Mary Ruth was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Magna Charta Dames. Her research revealed that she descended from Susanna Martin, one of the Salem “witches,” a distinction she enjoyed thoroughly. She was a member of the CT Genealogical Society, the St. Lawrence Valley Genealogical Society, Franklin County History and Museum Society, and Daughters of Union Veterans. She was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ogdensburg. Friends and family are invited to call from 10-11 am on Saturday, September 15 at the Crary Mills Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will follow at 11:00. At her request, friends are invited to share funny stories and memories of Mary Ruth at the service or at the luncheon to be held immediately following at the Church. Burial will be in the Crary Mills Cemetery. The family gratefully acknowledges the tender care of Dr. Sandra McCloy and both Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley and Hospice of Jefferson County, and asks that memorials be directed to either of those organizations or to the St. Lawrence County Historical Association.
Robert Francis "Franny" Demers, 59, 237 Buck Brook Road, Russell, died on August 29, 2007 under the care of his family and Hospice at the home of his daughter, Tiffany, 6817 CR 27, Canton. The funeral will be private, at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jane (Miller) Demers; a daughter, Tiffany Demers and her companion, Jerry Foster of Canton; a son, Robert Todd Demers of Clare; his father and step-mother, Francis “Chappy” and Beverly Demers of Ogdensburg; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Laurie Demers of Ogdensburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly (Demers) and John Newman of Boca Raton, Fl. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Demers; his mother, June Demers; two sisters, Trudy (Demers) Rodriguez and Martha (Demers) Castleman; a brother-in-law, George Miller and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Marckel. Mr. Demers was born in Ogdensburg on June 26, 1948, the son of Francis and June Demers. He attended Ogdensburg schools. He married Jane Miller on Nov. 10, 1966 at the Chapel of the Bells in Reno, Nevada. He was an SP5 Medic in the U.S. Army and was a disabled Vietnam Veteran. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Demers enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking and spending time with his family and friends.
