Jenkins, Richard "Dick"
Of Hendy Creek Rd. Pine City, passed away Thursday June 13, 2002 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following a brief illness at the age of 83.
Born on November 29, 1918 here in Elmira, Dick was the son of the late Arlie and Jenny Johnson Jenkins. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. Dick was employed for over 37 years with Bendix as a Layout Inspector until his retirement. He is remembered by his family and friends for having a strong work ethic, and was always willing to offer a helping hand. He enjoyed bowling with his friends and was a member of the Dixie Lanes Thursday Night League and the Moose Travel League. Active in the community, he was a devoted member of the Southport Kiwanis Club and previously the Elmira Moose Lodge # 517 before transferring to the Montour Falls Moose Lodge.
Surviving is he loving wife and companion of 33 wonderful years, Alyene Kehoe Jenkins of Pine City; their children, David & Barbara Jenkins; Richard & Patricia Jenkins; Lyle & Linda Wheeler; Sandy & George Ackerman; Ray Davies; and Ruth & Lewis Pipher; nineteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; brothers, James & Fran Jenkins; Daniel & Iva Jenkins; a sister, Clairbel Felko along with a community of well regarded friends.

Shroyer, Aaron B.
Formerly of Woodbine Ave. Southport passed away Sunday June 9, 2002 at Elcor Health Services following an illness at the age of 82.
Born on April 27, 1920 in Elmira, NY Aaron was the son of the late Boyd A. Shroyer and Olive Craven Lloyd. He served in the United States Army during WWII where he received a Bronze Service Star. Following the war he was employed as a truck driver with the Teamsters Union Local #529 and retired after 22 years of driving in 1982. Aaron married Kathryn Andrus on May 4, 1957 and they have spent the last 45 years together. He attended the Elmira Wesleyan Church for many years and his many interest included fishing, camping and gardening.
Surviving is his loving wife, Kathryn Andrus Shroyer; their children, Karen & George Shepard of Horseheads; Lecia & Charles Mould of Horseheads; Robin Buckland of Elmira; Julie Shroyer of Southport; an adopted daughter, Tina & Tim Castle of Lowman; Sharon Cox of PA; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale & Pat Shroyer of Horseheads; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce & Reggy Rody San Benito, TX; Lola & Roger Herrick of Southport; a sister-in-law, Helen & Samuel Confer of Ralston, PA; brothers-in-law, Kenneth & Alberta Andrus of Horseheads; Richard Brenza of Horseheads; eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many friends. Aaron was predeceased by his son, Donald E. Shroyer in 1966 and a sister, Arlene Brenza in 2001.

Of Elmira, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday June 5, 2002 at the age of 68.
Born on September 20, 1933 in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Adelbert and Mable Quackenbush Potter. She worked for the Office of the Aging in the Custodial Dept. for Diven School at one time. She enjoyed being outdoors and walking.
Surviving are her loving children, a daughter, Linda Perry of Elmira; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Tracy Meyers of Alexandra, VA; a granddaughter, Sonya Meyers; a sister, Pauline Travis; and a brother, Paul Potter; nieces and nephews.

Goodwin, Edward J. "Joe"
Formerly of Hendy Creek Rd. Pine City departed from this world on Tuesday evening June 4, 2002 at St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness at the age of 61.
Joe was born in Dennison, TX on February 22, 1941, the son of Adrian and Zelma Goodwin. He was employed by National Homes for many years as a
Mechanic. Joe enjoyed the challenge of auto racing and was known by many as a stock car builder for Pat Judson. Joe was an outdoorsman who spent many hours hunting and enjoyed time spent with his family and many friends.
Surviving is his former wife, Connie Grafius Boisselle and their loving son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Yvonne Goodwin of Southport; his cherished grandchildren, Danielle and Jim Goodwin; brothers, Larry (Donna) Goodwin of Elmira; Jerry (Betty) Goodwin of MO; and Don (Patty) Goodwin of MO; sisters, Bobbi Metcalf of WA; Betty (Leroy) Frady of TX; and Denise Gast of MO; Joe is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Jeff Goodwin, Jill (Gary) Baker, Jan Shaw, and Joy Collins along with close friends, Ross Wilson, Benny and Patty Cardamone. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Harold and Jim Goodwin.

Cory, Joseph S.
Of Montour Falls and formerly of Big Flats was reunited with his cherished mother in Heaven on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center where he had been a patient following an illness at the age of 41.
Joe was born in Niagara Falls the son of Robert and Sabatina Sagaria Cory. He was formerly employed by Glen Industries and presently by Challenge Industries of Ithaca. His many interests included NASCAR, enjoyed working in his yard, and was a collector of sorts. His warm smile and unique sense of humor would lighten a any room he entered.
Joe is survived by his loving family and many cherished friends, his father, Robert (Sheila) Cory of Big Flats; a sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer & Rex Mahosky of Elmira; a step sister, Anastasia Cory; Joseph's maternal grandfather, Carmelo Sagaria; his aunt and God Parents, Pietrina & Angelo Sementelli of Corning; additional aunts, Angela (Tim) French; Antonietta (Currado) Palumbo all of Corning; Juita (Arvid) Coole of Perkinston, MS; Glenna Mattiuz of Cleveland, OH; uncles, Sabato Sagaria of Columbus, OH; Mario (Jan) Sagaria of Dayton, OH; and Neil Cory of Perkinston, MS; along with several cousins.
Joe was predeceased by his loving mother, Sabatina Sagaria Cory in 1999.

Janeski, Michael J. Sr.
Went home to be with the Lord on Saturday January 18, 2003 here in Elmira at the age of 51.
Born in Elmira, Michael was the son of the late James E. & Katherine E. Branch Janeski. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy and joined The United States Army where he served both as enlisted and in the Army Reserves. He was a life long Correctional Officer serving over 24 years with New York State Corrections where his last position was at the Elmira Correctional Facility. He was planning to retire in November of this year. His many interest included his team, The New York Yankees, photography, taking vacations with his loving children, and time spent with his pets.
Surviving are his children, James T. Janeski of Columbus OH; Michael Janeski Jr. of Elmira; and Jill Janeski of Binghamton; a sister, Loretta (Don) Deane of Elmira; a brother, James (Karen) Janeski Jr. of Elmira; nieces, Tammy Deane of Auburn; Sally Deane of Painted Post; nephews, Ron Janeski of Baltimore, MD, Jeff (Tari) Janeski and Thomas Janeski of Elmira, Joe (Hunter) Janeski of Boiling Springs, SC; special buddies, Jake McKerrow and Gary Lido along with many cherished friends.

Wells, Vivian
Formerly of the Wellsboro and Daggett PA communities; passed away Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Manor in Bradford County following an illness at the age of 95.
Born on May 25, 1907 in Mosherville, PA; Vivian was the daughter of the late, William John & Grace Little Hungerford. Her husband of over 62 years, Roger H. Wells predeceased her in 1988. She enjoyed recording her family history in a journal which she kept. Her love of Nature and bird watching filled her days along with keeping up with community events.
Surviving is her son, Kenneth (Sherri) Rice of Towanda, PA; seven grandchildren; a sister, MyrtleViele; a brother, Arthur Raymond Hungerford; nieces & nephews including, Linda Lathrop of Fassett, PA and Carol Gilpin of Goulsboro, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, Vivian was predeceased by her son, Mark Gee; her brothers, Ralph, Jasper, & William A. Hungerford; and a nephew, William G. Hungerford.

Nicoll, Aurelia, M. "Terri"
A long time resident of Marstons Mills, MA passed away on Sunday morning, January 19, 2003 in Elmira, NY, under the care of her daughter Beth, husband Chuck Morrill, with kind support from Southern Tier Hospice.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 15, 1924, Terri was the daughter of the late Leonard & Marion Windstein. She married William Nicoll in 1947, who passed away in 1998. Because of William's employment they lived in many areas of the country including, New Jersey, Illinois, California and since 1981, on Cape Cod, MA. An active and vibrant lady, Terri enjoyed bowling with the Ladies Tuesday AM League in Hyannis, MA. She was well known on the Cape for her gift of flower gardening. Terri was a member of many gardening clubs and won numerous awards for her outstanding gardening talents. Even through her long battle with cancer she remained vibrant and strong.
Surviving are her loving children, daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Chuck Morrill of Elmira, NY; son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Nicoll of Gibsonia, PA; step-sons William (Carol) Nicoll, Frederick (Jerilyn) Nicoll, and very close family friend, Ruth Nicoll all of NJ; grandchildren, David (Brenda) Charbonneau, Renee Charbonneau, Joshua and Shawn Nicoll, and Nancy (Will) Rustia; Terri's sister, Mary (James) Ross of Pittsburgh, PA; brothers, Bernard Windstein of Pittsburgh, PA; and Larry (Linda) Windstein of Ellicott City, MD; nieces, nephews and loving friends, including her canine companion "Bijou", whom she adored.
Terri will be cremated at the Northern Bradford Crematory. A Memorial Service will be held on Cape Cod at a later date. Because of their wonderful care and support, the family has asked that memorial donations be sent to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 E. Corning, Rd. Corning, NY 14830 .
Hills, Leon F. Jr.
A longtime resident of Horseheads passed away on Wednesday evening January 15, 2003 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age of 56.
Born on June 13, 1946 in Blossburg, PA, Jr. was the son of the late Leon & Harriet Button Hills. He was employed for over 32 years at Kennedy Valve as a Forklift Operator. He enjoyed motor sports and was a NASCAR fan. Jr. enjoyed auto mechanics and attending stock car events with his many friends.
Surviving is his loving brother and sister-in-law, Thomas & Janice Hills of Elmira; his aunt, Betty Button of Tioga, PA; nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Tim Hills. A companion and friend of many years, Judy Fish of Horseheads along with her family; Judy's mother, Cora Fish; Judy's brothers, Danny, Bobby, Lester, and Charlie Fish; Judy's sisters, Helen Fish & Betty Hoyght and special niece, Victoria Fish and a nephew, C.J. Fish.
Jr. was predeceased by is parents, Leon & Harriet Button Hills in 1983 along with his brother, John Hills in 1986.

Becraft, Kathryn
A longtime resident of Three Rivers Health Care Center in Painted Post passed away Wednesday afternoon January 15, 2003 following a long full life at the age of 107.
Born in the year of 1895 on February 1st in Elmira, Kathryn was the daughter of Walter and Sophia Doane. During her long life, which bridged three centuries, she was witness to many of the events stored in libraries and read in history books. She out lived three husbands and worked in food service as a waitress until she retired in the mid 1960's from the Stanton Diner in Corning. She was a former member of the American Legion Bentley Post # 443 of Elmira. Kathryn was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Corning. Through out her life she enjoyed her family and time spent with her many friends.
Surviving is her daughter-in-law, Clara Vincent of Elmira; grandchildren, Gary (Mary) Vincent of Timonium, MD; great grandchildren, Jennifer & Dan MacKerchar of Churchville, PA and Jonathon Vincent of Morgantown, WV and Timonium, MD; a niece, Eleanor Sprague of Horseheads; and a nephew, George Weaver of Elmira; She is also survived by cherished friends, Phyllis & Sam Robinson of Corning. In addition to her parents and three husbands Kathryn was predeceased by her son, Walter Vincent in 1997.

Born on March 15, 1924 in Elmira, Bea was the daughter of Frank & Grace Peterson Orme. She was the wife of James L. Guest who predeceased her. During her life, Bea enjoyed traveling, going to Rodeo's and playing Bingo with her friends. She cherished her family and took joy in their company.
Bea is survived by her loving children, a daughter and son-in-law, Thelma & Daniel Myers; a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick & Barbara Quail all of Wellsburg; 8 grandchildren & 21 great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald & Beattie Ann Orme of Bath; along with nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Bea was predeceased by her sister, Betty Bailey and her brother's, Robert, Ernest & Paul Orme. Hobczuk, Nikolaj "Nick"
A longtime resident of Pine City passed away very unexpectedly on Friday January 3, 2003 at the age of 53.
Nick was born on December 13, 1949 in Germany the son of Nicholas & Anna Hucul Hobczuk. He served his country during the Vietnam War as a Helicopter Mechanic receiving numerous service awards and medals. Nick married Bonnie Wixson on April 1, 1972 here in Elmira. Together they have enjoyed the last 30 years of their lives together in Pine City, caring for their home. Nick was employed by Amthor Steel of Elmira as a draftsman. His many interest included reading and world events. He was a longtime communicant of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church and was a member of the American Legion Clarence Oliver Post # 154. His wit and sense of humor were cherished by those he knew.

Born in Columbia Cross Roads, PA on July 12, 1912, Frances was the daughter of Tracy & Lucy Dillon Wilson. She was employed by St. Joseph's Hospital as a Nurses Aide. Frances was a life long member of the Gillett Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and caring for her home & family.
Surviving is her loving son & daughter-in-law, Earle & Janet Stanton of Elmira; her grandchildren Dawn & Theodore Aikman of Breesport; Randy & Lorraine Stanton of Corning; Edward & Debra Stanton of Breesport; Ronald & Susan Stanton of Elmira; nine great grandchildren & one great great grandchild; a sister, Elizabeth Hausman of FL; a brother, Richard Wilson of NE; several nieces & nephews. Frances was predeceased by her first & second husbands, Edward C. Stanton & Edson Rynearson, her infant son, Wilson Stanton, brothers, Gaylord & Loren Wilson, and a sister, Esther Thomas.

will take place in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy, PA.
McCarthy, Daniel W.
A devoted community servant of Elmira's Southside passed away very unexpectedly on Saturday November 16, 2002. Born on September 1, 1935 here in Elmira, Dan was the son of the late Owen P. & Loretta M. Bebble McCarthy. He graduated from Southside High School in 1953 and attended Eckels Mortuary School at Temple University, graduating in 1958. Mr. McCarthy was the proprietor of the McCarthy Funeral Home which he operated for many years. The McCarthy's served many families throughout the area in their time of grief. Dan also devoted much of his time to The Ancient Order of Hibernians of Chemung County where he was a Past President and Steward. Dan was a former Committee Chairman for the Democratic Party. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary's Franklin St. Church where he was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He worked Bingo and served on the parish council for many years. Dan also served on the Parochial School Board where he was a past President. A loving father and grandfather, Dan enjoyed time spent with his family and many friends and brothers at the Hibernians.
Surviving is his loving friend and the mother of his children, Marjorie McCarthy; their children, a daughter & son-in-law, Eileen & Mark Ruppenthal of Horseheads; sons & daughters-in-law, William & Jennifer McCarthy and Kevin & Colleen McCarthy of Elmira; a granddaughter, Lindsay McCarthy; along with numerous cousins and cherished friends.

A longtime resident of Wilawana Rd. Wellsburg area, passed away Monday evening November 11, 2002 in the Tioga Nursing Facility following an illness at the age of 74.
Born on July 11, 1928, Ralph was the only child of John & Alice Burt Tanner. He was a self employed dairy farmer who proudly operated his family dairy farm which has been in operation for over 100 years. Ralph was a member of the Farm Bureau, a former Town Councilman for Chemung, and was awarded the honor of "Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year". Together with his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia Ameigh Tanner and their son, Dwight they have carried on the family business into a new century. His many interest included hunting, flea markets and time spent with family and his many friends.

A longtime resident of Elmira passed away Sunday morning, November 10, 2002 at St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness at the age of 79.
Born in Jamestown on June 17, 1923, Reynold was the son of the late Ernest and Floy Ribbing Beckman. He served in the United states Navy during WWII. After returning home he along with his father opened their family cookie business, Beckman & Sons which he operated for over 47 years. He also was well known by many as "Cookie", driving a school bus for the City of Elmira School District for 8 years. He married his loving wife, Mellicent Keim Beckman on October 9 1958 in Hornell. He was a longtime member of the Elmira Baptist Church of Elmira, was proud of achieving the level of 33rd degree Mason, enjoyed playing golf, bowling, hunting, and volunteering at the soup kitchen. Always remaining active he especially enjoyed time with his loving family and friends.
Surviving is his loving wife of 44 years, Mellicent Beckman, and their children, Rand S. (Connie) Beckman of Belmont; Darcy (William) Pulos of Alfred; Reynold K. (Donna L.) Beckman of Pine City; Jill B. (Thomas J.) Grannis of Elmira; Todd (Loretta) Beckman of Vancouver, WA; grandchildren, Randy Beckman, Nathan & Nicole Aguiar; Andrew & Zackary Beckman; Jessica & Emily Grannis; Alexis, Fred, Todd, & Scott Beckman; nieces & nephews including a cherished nephew, James Beckman and longtime family friends. He was predeceased by his two infant brothers and his brother and business partner along with his wife, Richard & Virginia Beckman.

Jerram, L. Genevieve "Pete"
A long time resident of the Seeley Creek community passed away Tuesday evening, October 22, 2002 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility at the age of 90 following an illness.
Pete was born on September 13, 1912 in Turbotville, PA daughter of the late William and Cora Fullmer Shade. She was the loving wife for over 57 years to G. Wilton "Bill" Jerram. Pete enjoyed being active; dinning out, playing cards, and caring for her home brought her much enjoyment through the years.
Surviving is her loving stepdaughter and friend, Mary Jerram of Seeley Creek; a sister, Frances Miller of Lewisburg, PA; nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews.
Pete was predeceased by her husband, Bill Jerram; a sister & brother-in-law, AllaVesta & Ralph Ketcham; brothers & sisters-in-law, Clarence "Bud" & Ruth Shade, Doyle & Mildred Shade; and a brother-in-law, Emerson Miller.

Miller, Nancy F. "Nana"
Formerly of Sherman Ave. Southport, passed away peacefully, Sunday June 15, 2003 surrounded by her loving family at the Chemung County Nursing Facility following an illness at the age of 81.
Born here in Elmira on October 14, 1921, Nancy was the daughter of the late George Sr. & Susie Dodge Fleming. She married Walter Miller in 1940 and he predeceased her in 1988. Her interest included reading and crossword puzzles. She was active in the Wellsburg Senior Citizens Group and was a member of the Wellsburg United Methodist Church. Nancy was a homemaker who enjoyed caring for her loving family which survive her.
A daughter and son-in-law, Shirley & Charles Sullivan, Wellsburg; sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Jr. & Sherry Miller, Elmira; John & Rita Polk, Elmira; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward & Sharon Fleming Elmira; seven grandchildren & six great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Nancy was also predeceased by her brother, George Fleming Jr. and her grandson, Brad Polk.

Miller, Frederick Sr.
A longtime resident of Holdridge St. in Southport, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday June 9, 2003 with his loving family by his side at the age of 83.
Fred was born here in Elmira on December 31, 1919 son of Harold R. and Gladys Young Miller. He married the love of his life Caroline Austin on June 29, 1949 here in Elmira. Fred was known for being a hard worker. He was the proprietor of Kennedy Trucking for over 35 years retiring in 1978 after traveling countless miles throughout our community. His many interest included the love of nature, hunting, and cherished memories of his loving family which survive him.

Shaw, Brandon D.
A resident of Rockwell Avenue, Horseheads passed away Saturday morning, May 10, 2003 from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 18. Born on July 14, 1984, he was a 2002 graduate of Horseheads High School, Brandon accomplished a lot in his short life. He keep active with bowling and was awarded a scholarship as well as many trophies. Always creative and artistic, He was a painter and wrote poetry. Brandon collected baseball cards and enjoyed playing basketball. His pride and joy was his silver 1999 Honda Civic which he spent many hours customizing. He was employed at the Quick Fill Gas Station in Hanover Square where he worked with his friends. His smile and sense of humor were gifts he freely shared.
He is the loving son of Jan Goodwin Shaw of Horseheads and Daryl Shaw of Millport. Also surviving Brandon are his maternal grandparents, Larry & Donna Goodwin, Elmira; maternal aunts, uncles and cousins, Jill (Gary) Baker with Kyle & Kurt Baker, Horseheads; Joy Collins with Cassie & Molly Collins, Ovid; Jeff Goodwin with Jordon Goodwin, Pine City; paternal aunts, uncles and cousins, David (Kristen) Shaw with Allen, Mark & Craig Shaw, Acworth, GA; Donald (Jean) Shaw with Donnie & Julie Shaw, Elmira; Dale (Linda) Shaw with Jason & Heather Shaw, Elmira; Brandon's best friend and companion, Katie Sophia, Horseheads; along with a community of awesome friends. Brandon was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Ernest & Laura Shaw.
