Muccigrosso, Vincent "Vinnie"
A longtime resident of Sharr Ave. in Southport passed away peacefully, Saturday evening, April 29, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness at the age of 72.
A native of Elmira, he was the son of the late Dominico "Thomas" & Anna Muccigrosso. He was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy and Elmira College. He was a sales engineering manager for more than 40 yeas for Westinghouse & ISTC. Vinnie was formerly involved in Junior Achievement and served on the Elmira School Board and was their former president. He served his country in the US Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict and was a longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Surviving is his loving wife and companion of 49 years, Kathryn Chamberlain Muccigrosso; their daughters and sons-in-law, Susan & Greg Schultz, Athens, GA; Eileen Muccigrosso, Southport; Laure Muccigrosso, York, PA; Ann & Kevin Loveland, Dover, TN; Catherine "Kitty" Muccigrosso, Gastonia, NC; grandchildren, Pauline Oberg, Athens, GA; Michael Oberg, Atlanta, GA; Kevin Jr., Vincent and Stephen Loveland, Dover, TN; a brother and sister-in-law, Donato & Judy Muccigrosso, Liverpool, NY; sisters, Betty Ann Tota, Big Flats, NY; and Rose Merritt, Elmira, NY; several nieces nephews and wonderful neighbors and friends.

Lavalley, Alonzo
A longtime resident of Southport, NY passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Sunday Morning, April 30, 2006 at the age of 86.
Born on May 3, 1919, Alonzo was the son of Warren & Ida Lavalley. He served in the United States Army Airforce during WWII and the Korean Conflict, his plane was shot down twice over France. Alonzo graduated form Simmons Institute of Mortuary Science, Syracuse, NY and was a New York State Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. Well known within the profession, Alonzo gave great care to the families he served and is remembered for his kindness and compassion to others. He was a professional baseball pitcher, a member of the American Legion in Champlain, NY, a past president of the Eagles Club and a communicant of St. Mary's Church. His happiest times were shared with his loving family who survive and cherish his memory. His loving wife and companion of 68 years, Ina Lavalley; their children, Laura & Angelo Fusco, Pine City; Ltc USA Ret. A long time resident of the Gillett, PA community passed away at Robert Packer Hospital, Wednesday morning, April 26, 2006 at the age of 76.
Born in Corning, NY, Janet was the daughter of Elli & Margaret Becker Williams. Janet retired from Paper Magic, Troy, PA after 30 years of dedicated service. Her many interests included hunting, gardening and caring for her family. She was the loving wife and companion for sixty years to Edward Preston, Gillett; a caring mother to their children, Nelson & Georgia Preston, Sanford, FL; Carl & Faith Preston, Millerton, PA; and Michael Preston, Mansfield, PA; sisters, JoAnne & Richard Tice, Sylvania, PA; Bertha & Harley Fry, Muncy, PA; a brother, Robert & Connie Williams, Troy, PA; along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a community of friends.
In addition to her parents, Janet was predeceased by her two daughters, Marsha Elaine Preston and Margaret Becker Preston and her son, Edwin Preston.

Dembosky, Ruth Ann
A longtime resident of Personious Rd. passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 18, 2006 at her Pine City home.
Born on June 22, 1933 in Wellsboro, PA, Ruth was the daughter of Stephen & Anna Wahlan Kennedy and was the last living of her six siblings. She married William Dembosky on July 4, 1956 in Wellsboro, PA. Ruth was employed for many years at St. Joseph's Hospital as a Laboratory Technician. She was also a homemaker, loving wife and devoted mother to her children as well as the surrounding neighborhood kids. Ruth loved flower gardening and caring for her home.
Surviving is her loving husband of 49 years, Bill Dembosky; their children, Stanley K. & Cassie Dembosky, Ithaca; Steven & Estelle Knowles Dembosky, Horseheads; Anna & John Relihan, Syracuse; her pal and neighbor, Johnathan Gunderman along with a community of cherished family friends.

A long time resident of the Fassett and Gillett, PA communities went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at his home following an extended illness at the age of 77.
Bill was born on July 9, 1928 in Reading, PA son of Clair & Nida Hill Jordan. He was an over the road tractor trailer driver, logging countless miles across the country. Bills interest included hunting and family gatherings at his home. Surviving is his cherished wife and companion of 60 years, Harriett Landon Jordan along with their loving children, Robert E. (Virginia) Jordan, Elmira; William Dale Jordan, Carolyn Jordan, Linda (Dave) Thomas, all of Gillett, PA; Vicki (Ed Kent) Jordan, Wellsburg; and Theresa (Arthur) Hogan, Caton; 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a dear aunt, Erma Clark, Wellsburg; a sister-in-law, Virginia Cornish, Millport; a brother-in-law, Mervin (Bonnie) Landon, Gillett, PA; longtime friends, LaVern & Charlotte Rose, Elmira; Jim & Mary Borman, Millport.

Riley, Iva B. (Anna)
Passed departed this world the day following her joyous birthday celebration on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the age of 87. Iva was born on April 7, 1919 in Elmira, daughter of Elmer & Gertrude Criss Osborn. She married Sylvester L "Buster" Riley on September 28, 1935. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her both husbands, S. L. Riley and Clifford Doty; her siblings, Myrtle Wood, Alma Sawyer Munson Cook and Melvin D. Sawyer and her beloved daughter, Eleanor Riley Cummings.
Iva was employed for many years at Corning Inc. she was an avid hunter and enjoyed caring for her large family who survive. Her nine children, Beverly R (Tom) Dates, Corning; Leroy G. "Butch" (Patti), Caton; Joseph R. (June) Riley, Caton; Carol R. (Edward) Robbins, Sagetown; Shirley (Dave Scouten) Riley, Caton; David L. Riley, Caton; J. Stoner, Sheldon B.
A much loved minister and preacher of the Southern Tier Church of Christ went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday April 5, 2006 in Lawrence, MA very unexpectedly at the age of 84.
Sheldon was born on December 27, 1921 in Scottsdale, PA son of the late Park & Cora Billheimer Stoner. He married the love of his life Naomi Gorham in 1953. Together they spent their lives serving the Lord and laboring in the Southern Tier Church of Christ, 351 E. Thurston St. Elmira, NY 14901 where family and friends will be received on Saturday morning, April 8, 2006 between the hours of 10 - 12 noon. Funeral services will follow the visitation time on Saturday at 12 noon. Also a memorial service will take place at the church on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Sheldon attended Eastern Christian Institute, NJ before laboring in the church for over 40 years. He lived to see their sanctuary completed in 2000. His many interest, included gardening and traveling to visit his large family who survive and cherish his memory.

A long time resident of Southport, passed away very unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at the Robert Packer Hospital following complications from heart surgery.
Born on April 16, 1922 in Elmira, Virginia was the daughter of Charles & Annabelle Lisk Morseman. She was married to William T. Held Jr. on September 14, 1940 and he predeceased her on October 17, 1999. Virginia was employed by Westinghouse for many years. She was a homemaker who enjoyed caring for her home and family who survive and cherish her memory. A son, Rodney (Lori Kerbein) Held, Elmira Heights; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra & Edward Miele, Southport;
five grandchildren including her caregiver and friend, Tonya Perry; three great grandchildren, a brother, Charles (Marvyne) Morseman, Erin; a sister, Betty McCarthy, Bentley Creek, PA; a brother-in-law, George (Marilyn) Held, Pine Valley; sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Frank) Bober, Southport; Shirley (Joseph) Jessick, Mechanicsburg, PA; Marilyn (John) Woodhull, Pine City; along with several nieces and nephews.
Virginia was cremated at the Northern Bradford Crematory and her ashes will interred with her husbands in Woodlawn National Cemetery.

Of Elmira passed away Saturday evening, March 18, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness.
June was born on May 10, 1922 daughter of John & Eva Misner.
She was predeceased by her loving husband and companion, Leonard V. Houghtaling following 54 years of marriage on February 13, 2001. Her many interest included working closely with her husband in their wood working business, gardening and caring for her home. June was a gifted seamstress who made many gowns by hand.
Surviving is her family who cherish her memory, Susan & Tim Robinson, Springwater, NY; John Houghtaling, WA; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at her families convenience.
Wheet, Francis W. Jr.
A longtime resident of Batavia St. Southport passed away on Monday, March 13, 2006 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age of 78. Fran was predeceased by his parents, Francis & Lydia Davies Wheet along with his granddaughters, Tara and Stephanie Wheet.
Surviving is his loving family who survive and cherish his memory, His wife and companion of 23 years, Evesta Wheet; children, Gary (Susan) Wheet, Mark (Sarah) Wheet and Thomas (Irene) Wheet; sisters, Lois Stocum, Ruth Reinbold, Norma Kakritz and a brother, Dean Wheet, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Fran was employed with the United States Post Office in Elmira and retired after 26 years of dedicated service. A WWII and Korean War Veteran, he was a past commander and lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 154. When not enjoying quiet times with his wife at his camp during the summertime, Francis would be out playing golf and was a distinguished member of the "Hole In One Club".
Frans wishes were to be cremated with no viewing and have a private memorial service held at his families convenience.

A resident of Linden Place, Elmira passed away Thursday evening June 1, 2006 at his home with his loving family by his side at the age of 76. Born March 27, 1930 Francis was the son of Robert O. & Novilla G. Fenton Matthews. Mr. Matthews served in the United States Army. He was employed as a truck driver most of his life having retired from Shulman's. Franny enjoyed fishing, golfing, family time and is remembered for his sense of humor. Genaway, Catherine
Age 89, died peacefully May 23, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital whose care she had been under for the past few days. Catherine was born February 22, 1917 Parmenter Hill, Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania daughter of John Jones and Alice Mae Orton. They soon moved and she was raised on the family farm in the Seeley Creek Valley, Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania and attended Millerton High School where she excelled in athletics. She was employed at the Dixie Barbecue and Earl and Jerry's in Elmira. Catherine married June 30, 1956 in Elmira, New York, Lester Wilbur Genaway and they made their home for many years at 757 Chester Street, Elmira. Their long time summer home was in Hector, New York on Seneca Lake. She is survived by her husband; two brothers, Raymond Jones and his wife Julia of Pine City and John Jones, Jr., and his wife Marilyn of Wells Township; nephews and nieces, Beverly Jones Wess of Fairport, New York; David Jones of Shokan, New York; Robert Nash of Endicott, New York; Patricia Nash of Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey; Alvin Jones of York, Pennsylvania; Ardys Jones Ross of Pine City; Margaret Jones Hastings of Port Richey, Florida; Mary Beth Jones Corwin of Endicott; Deborah Jones Morgan of Wells Township; Jeffrey Jones of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania; Alan Jones of Wells Township; Brenda Jones Cuer of Pine City; Bonita Jones Collins of Elmira; J. A resident of Carriage Estates, Elmira passed away peacefully, Friday morning, May 19, 2006 while in the care of St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness.
Dorothy was born on November 11, 1920 in Nineveh, NY daughter of Charles E. & Pearl M. Keach Tripp. She was employed for many years at the Remington-Rand. Her many interests included her many collectibles and caring for her home. A sports fan, Dorothy played basketball in her younger years and was a NASCAR fan. Surviving are her four loving sons and their families, Allen C. & Mary Jo; Chandler, AZ; Robert L. & Donna C.; Pine City; James R. & Donna F.; Elmira; and Richard L. & Mary Jean, Mooresville, NC; fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews and many family friends.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Charles E. & Pearl M. Keach Tripp; her husband, Robert L. VanDeBogart; her daughter, Sandra Campbell; a granddaughter, Michelle Nichols her twin brother, Donald Tripp; brother, Charles Tripp; sisters, Thelma Austin and Wilma Parsons; and a friend and companion, Richard Benedict.

A longtime resident of Southport went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday evening, May 14, 2006 at his home in the care of his loving family following an illness at the age of 85.
Born on December 18, 1920 in Horseheads, Jesse was the son of Jesse G. & Florence Dilmore VanAmburg. He was a loving husband and companion to Rena Mae Rickner for over 62 years. Together they raised a loving and Christian family who cherish his memory, his children, Roy VanAmburg, Campbell; Patricia & Roger Pollen, Elmira; and Eileen & David Batrony, Southport; four grandchildren, James (Colleen) Pollen; Kathy Pollen, Jeffery Ripley Jr. and Jessica Batrony; two great grandchildren, Kyle and Darren Pollen; brothers, Raymond VanAmburg and George Blanchard, both of Horseheads; along with several nieces and nephews. Jesse was predeceased by is daughter-in-law, Donna VanAmburg on June 30, 2003; his brother, Robert VanAmburg and his sisters, Lillian McCarthy and Zella Tidwell. He served his country during WWII in the Army Air Core. He was employed for many years by American LaFrance and also by A&P Foods. In serving the Lord he was a long time member of the Elmira Christian Center. He found great enjoyment while fishing at his family's cottage on Lamoka Lake. was born on September 19, 1924 in Troy, NY, fully took the hand of his Savior and crossed over into the heavenly world on May 8, 2006. Bill is survived by his wife, Lillian Parmelle Hollis; along with her brother and sisters, Carl & Dorothy Parmelee, Phyllis & Henry Welshans; Mildred & Bud Carrol; Bill's children, Brian, Bob and Beth; two daughters-in-law, Erin and Carol; his grandchildren, Brandi, Andrew, Amy, Stephanie, William, AnaCarpri; great grandchildren, Bailey and Kiran; many nieces and nephews. Gehrig, Elizabeth J. "Bea"
A long time resident of the Southport community passed away Saturday evening, August 12, 2006 at her Carter St. home.
Born on October 13, 1922 in Dubois, PA Bea was the daughter of Thomas & Lena Maxwell Heatley. She was a homemaker who enjoyed word puzzles, a baseball fan who followed the NY Yankees and enjoyed caring for her home and her family. Surviving is her loving husband and companion of 32 years, Norbert "Norb" Gehrig and their children, DOn & Barb Crawford, Cicero, NY; Carole "Jean" & Charles Hults, Elmira; Ron & Fran Gehrig, New Paltz, NY; and Amy & Bob Crosbie, Port Charlotte, FL; sisters-in-law, June Heatley, Millport, NY; and Elsie Price, Ithaca, NY; several grandchildren including a very special caregiver, Liza Davis; great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Bea was also predeceased by her brothers, Tom, George and Jim and a sister, Geraldine.
Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport, on Tuesday August 15, 2006 between the hours of 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Caywood's following the evening visitation at 8:15 p.m. Interment
will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY on Wednesday morning at the families convenience.

Genaway, Lester Wilbur
Age 86, recently of the Chemung County Nursing Facility, formerly of 757 Chester St. Elmira, NY died Tuesday morning, August8, 2006. Lester was born on November 30, 1919 in Chateaugay, NY son of Wilbur D. & Lila M. Genaway. Lester moved with his family to Elmira where he graduated form Southside High School in 1938. He became a Mason in 1946 as a member of Ivy Lodge F. & A. M. Lester married June 30, 1956 in Elmira, NY to Catherine Jones who died May 23, 2006. Their long time summer home was in Hector, NY on Seneca Lake where Lester spent many hours fishing. Lester and Catherine were both avid bowlers. He owned Genaway Wholesale, a glove, hosiery and general merchandise business, located at 403 S. Main St. Elmira. He was a member of Cashmere Grotto and Christ United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his sister, June Dickinson, Bridgeport, CT; a brother, David Genaway and his wife, Inez, Canfield, OH; a sister-in-law, Mary Genaway, Fairfield, CT; nephews, John Sheehan, Millville, NJ; John Genaway, Escondido, CA; nieces, Joanne Cusano, Stratford, CT; Sharon Easton, Austintown, OH.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lester was predeceased by his sister, Norma Sheehan and a brother, Earl Genaway. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the excellent care of Lester and Catherine. in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira next to his beloved wife Catherine.
Halm, Eileen Schusler
A long time resident of Lower Maple Ave. Elmira, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 3, 2006 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility at the age of 80.
Born on March 24, 1926, Eileen was the daughter of Joseph & Minnie Kakritz Schusler. She was married to Clifford Halm in 1950. Eileen was employed by Westinghouse in Horseheads until her retirement. Her many interests included fishing at her families cottage on the Thousand Islands, cooking and spending quality time with her family.
Surviving is her loving family, husband and companion, Clifford Halm, Elmira; their children, Pamela & Michael Quick, FL; Patty Hazen (Ron Perry), Lowman; Peggy & James Chapman, Horseheads; Michele Hughes (Duane Storch), Horseheads; and Michael & Debbie Halm, FL; nine grandchildren, Mikie Quick, Christopher Hazen and his girlfriend, Beth Anderson, Andrew Hughes and his wife Samantha, Eric Hughes, Matthew Chapman, Carolyn Chapman, Geoffrey Chapman, Nicholas Halm, Camry Halm; a great grandson, Anthony Hughes; sisters, Marion Justic, Alice Keough and Dorothy Schusler; along with several nieces, nephews and family friends. Eileen was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Halm.

Hungerford, Arthur Raymond
A well know resident of the Fassett, Pa community passed away peacefully, Friday afternoon, July 14, 2006 at home at the age of 88.
Born on December 16, 1917 in Elmira, Ray was the son of William J. & Grace Little Hungerford. He was married to Wanda Holcombe in 1944 and she predeceased him in 1992. He was employed by Ward LaFrance and later by A&P Foods as a HV&AC Technician for nearly twenty years. A Veteran, Ray served in the United States Army during WWII. He was an accomplished homebuilder and stone mason. Surviving are his loving daughters, Linda Lathrop, Fassett, PA and Carol Gilpin, Goulsboro, PA; a sister, Myrtle Viele, Horseheads; four grandchildren, Richard & Becky Lathrop, Roger & Ginger Lathrop, Ryan (Jamie) Durfee and Travis Durfee; several great grandchildren nieces, nephews and many family friends.
Ray was predeceased by his son, William Guy Hungerford; a sister, Vivian Wells; brothers, Ralph, Jasper and William Hungerford.

Box, Russell Stevens "Steve"
A much loved resident of the Southport community passed away very unexpectedly on Thursday morning, July 13, 2006 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following a brief illness at the age of 48.
Born here in Elmira, Steve was the son of Russell & Sibyl Box. He attended Elmira Free Academy graduating in 1976. He married his companion and loving wife, JoAnn Cartwright on August 11, 1979. Steve was the proprietor of Box & Moore Storage Inc. until joining Keck's Food Service where he was the Bakery Sales Director. Steven was a current member and secretary of the Retail Bakers Association of New York State. His many interests included sailing on Keuka Lake with his father and was a former member of the Keuka Lake Yacht Club, He enjoyed Indy racecars, possessed a wonderful sense of humor, was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and lifelong member of the Southport Fire Department. A supportive husband and father, Steven loved vacationing with his family who survive and cherish his memory.
His wife of 26 years JoAnn Cartwright Box, their children, Mallory and Brian Box both at home. Stevens parents, Russell and Sibyl Box, Elmira; his sister, Janet (Tom Crane) Box-Panksepp, Elmira; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clifford "Popo" & Betty "Nema" Cartwright, Elmira; a sister-in-law, Linda Donovan, Big Flats, brothers-in-law, Paul & Karen Cartwright, Montour Falls; Robert & Sandra Cartwright, Saco, ME; Clifford & Erica Cartwright, West Palm Beach, FL; nephews and nieces, including Jules Panksepp, Bradley (Angela) Cartwright and a nephew and godson Christopher Cartwight along with a community of friends including his neighbors, Allen & Mary Pratt and his many colleagues. Steven was predeceased by his uncle and mentor, George Box.

Gromes, Richard A.
Residing at Westover Hills Park, Wellsburg passed away, Thursday morning, July 6, 2006 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age of 67.
Born on March 26, 1939, Richard was the son of Frederick & Gertrude VanLuven Gromes. He married Bonnie Spear in 1975 and they have shared thirtyone wonderful years together. Also surviving are children, Richard A. Jr. (Jennifer) Gromes, Elmira; Ronald A. (Kimberly) Gromes, Wellsburg; and Jolena (Douglas Ames) Gromes, Elmira; six beloved grandchildren, Cassandra, Brittney, Natalie, Peyton, Mitchell and Douglas "DJ";
sisters, Eleanor White and Margaret Dimmitt; a brother-in-law, Charles Spear; and beloved friends, Walt & Shirley Vandermark Richard was predeceased by his son, Randolph Gromes, sisters, Cora "Liz" Hutchings and Harriett Sickler.
He was a truck driver for many years. A loving family man and father, he opened his home to many foster children and was active in Division for Youth. He took enjoyment in watching his family play softball. Richard enjoyed socializing with his many friends and attended the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church.

Naylor, Raymond H. Sr.
A long time resident of Sayre, PA passed away peacefully, Monday, July 3, 2006 at the Robert Packer Hospital following an illness at the age of 51.
Born on April 7, 1955 in Laredo, TX son of Raymond L. & Barbara Ripley Naylor. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. His many interests included, coin collecting, antiques, playing his guitar, and was an avid artist.
