ANSTEY - Harold G., 79, resident of Port Washington since 1949, died August 15, 2000, after a long ill ness. Husband of the late Elean or Anstey, he is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Anstey of Port Washington, his sisters, Au drey Holwell and Joan Sharpe of Twillingate, Newfoundland and his brother Carl Anstey of Dart mouth, Nova Scotia. Mr. Anstey, a native of Newfoundland, served Great Britain, in Scotland, dur ing World War II, after which he immigrated to the United States (directly to Port Washington) with his wife and daughter. He was a longtime employee of the Sands Point Water Department from which he retired in 1991, al though he remained as a consul tant to the water district for many more years. He attended the former Cathedral Academy for 12 years, graduating with honors in 1955. US Army veteran of five years and honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant. Served as an engineer with US Army contracts/Dept. of Defense Logistics Agency. Beloved son, nephew, brother, uncle and friend. BLACKWELL - Margaret M. of Old Field, LI and New York City, died peacefully at home on Saturday November 25th after a long battle with cancer. Daughter of Ward and Dorothy Melville, she was born on April 13, 1919 in Brook lyn, NY. Her husband, James H. Blackwell, died in 1986. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Bunny Williams, of New York City, and stepson James H. Blackwell Jr., of Dover, MA, as well as his children Carter and Sarah. She is also survived by two brothers, Frank Melville of Norfolk, CT, and David B. Melville of Rum Cay, Bahamas, along with a number of nephews and nieces and their children. Mrs. Blackwell graduated from the Madeira School and attended Bryn Mawr College. She was an able horse woman, serving as MFH of the Smithtown Hunt, and she and her husband were co - founders of the American Driving Society. She continued her parents support of a number of causes in the Three Villages of Old Field, Setauket, and Stony Brook. Of particular interest to her was The Museums at Stony Brook now known as The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages. She served on the museum board for a number of years, and has been a member of the board of the Mel ville Charitable Trust since its in ception in 1990. BRYAN - Agnes K. (nee Kelly) died August 12, 2000 in Waterville, ME after a long illness at age 93. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY she received her Baccalaureate degree from St. Joseph's College for women in 1928; earned her Master's Degree from Columbia University and was a mathematics teacher in the NYC school system. Later she worked as a substitute teacher. Member of the Rosary Society of St. Vincent Ferrers' Church, Brooklyn and later at the Altar Rosary Society, St. Lawrence Church, Matawan, NJ. She was a daily communi cant for most of her life. In addi tion to being a homemaker she was devoted to her roles as Eucharistic Minister and sponsor of RCIA candidates. She was also active for many years as a volunteer including pastoral work. She traveled widely with her husband and delighted in making new friendships on thos trips. Predeceased by her husband of 64 years, John, by their son John Jr. and her brothers James and Joseph. CAVUTO - James A., 54, of Hazlet, NJ, on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. Mr. Cavuto was the Direc tor of Operations of A.A.N. Services, NYC. He was a member of St. Benedict's RC Church, Holmdel, NJ. He was a former baseball and softball coach for the Hazlet Youth Athletic League. He was a member of the National Italian American Assoc. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving with the 1st Air Cavalry Division from 1967-69. He had spent his entire career of 35 years in the cosmetic industry. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived in North Babylon, NY, before moving to Hazlet 25 years ago. He was predeceased by his father Angelo. COHEN - Jack on February 7, 2001 surrounded by his loving and caring family succumbed to cancer following a heroic and courageous battle. Jack is survived by his wife, Ellen, his childhood sweetheart who was devoted to him and by his cherished and much loved children, Wendy, Jonas, Todd and his adoring grandchildren, Hayley and Alec. His parents and siblings survive him. Throughout his life, as well as in his final months, he continued to share of himself. He inspired his family, friends, the medical community and his business associates with his tenacity, hope and caring for others as he struggled to overcome his illness and get on with living. D'ALESSANDRO - Dr. John G., 54, died on October 6, 2000. His wife, Peggy, son, Gene, and two daughters, Valerie and Mrs. Lori Kilada and son-in-law, Joseph Kilada, survive him. He is formerly from Glen Ridge, N.J., and is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Gene L. D'Alessandro, and two sisters, Ms. Diane Murphy and Mrs. Susan Harriott and husband, Rex Harriott. He was a respected psychologist with a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from St. John's University. Dr. D'Alessandro earned the highest honor awarded to psychologists, a "Diplomate in Clinical Psychology." He was active in both private and public practice in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. He was the supervising psy chologist at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center and a forensic expert for the Nassau County Department of Mental Health. He has resided in Port Washington since 1979 and was a member of the Port Washington Yacht Club. He enjoyed sailing and power boating on L.I. Sound and was active in trapshooting, hunting, skiing, biking and tennis. He is mourned by his family, friends, col leagues and all the lives he has touched. DiFLORIO - August, a resident of Plattekill, NY since 1977 died Tuesday, August 15, 2000. During WWII he worked for Grumman and during the Korean War he worked for Republic Aviation. From 1944 through 1995 he pursued a career as a comedy actor, as a comedy waiter and "Italian General" featured in Candid Camera and the Merv Griffin Show. He was the widower of Helen Slensky DiFlorio whom he married April 2, 1938. The son of the late Camillo and Anna DeLutis DiFlorio. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Fretmann of Baldwin; one son August J. DiFlorio of Massapequa; two sisters Jean Tonna of Astoria and Faye Russo of Lake City, Florida; six grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. HILL - Joseph E. on September 28, 2000, formerly of Mineola, L.I. from complications of emphysema with his wife of 61 years at his side. He was born on August 20, 1912 in Coney Island to Joseph and Georgie Edna Hill. He is a direct descendant of William Yarrington who fought in the Revolutionary War in the 2nd Regiment New York. His powder horn is exhibited at the Long Island Historical Society. A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, he married Mildred Catherine Dawe at Christ Church in Brooklyn on September 23, 1939. During WWII, he worked in shipyards converting cargo ships to troop carriers and for Sperry in Great Neck for over 30 years as a marketing rep. He was an avid Mets fan and longtime supporter of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Both a son and grandson are graduates. He is survived by his devoted wife, two sons, Donald and Charles, both of Croton and seven grandchildren: David, Kristen, Morgan, Lauren and Bronwen of Croton, Danille of NYC and Lt. Trevor of Fort Polk, LA. A memorial service will be held on October 21 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. in Breslau Cemetery, Lindenhurst. Mr. Kelly was born and raised in Port Washington, L.I. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Manhasset, L.I. and St. John's University, Queens. In the course of his working career, he managed a complex of apartments in Flushing, Queens. He also maintained his own accounting firm and income tax service until the time of his death. Mr. Kelly was active in community affairs, serving as vice president of the Lindenhurst School Board from 1975 to 1978. He was a sup porter of local Little League football and baseball as coach, um pire, and referee. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. He is survived by Roberta, his wife of 39 years and their five children, Peggy Gaare, Mary Beth Henderson, Tom, Maureen Rossi, and Michael and by ten grandchildren, ages 3 to 18 years. He is also survived by his brother, Sean; sisters Mary Ingraham and Catherine Egan and his mother-in-law, Marge Buraczenski.

LUNTEY - Beverly Weber, died August 14, 2000. She was born and grew up in Spokane, Washington. She graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in Journalism and worked as a reporter for the Spokane Chronicle. She also took graduate work at Northwestern University and wrote a weekly column for the Spokane Chronicle for 20 years. She and her husband moved to New York in 1948. For many years, Beverly was Social Secretary for Mrs. William S. (Babe) Paley. Later, she filled the same responsibilities for Mrs. Fosberg, another of the famous Cushing sisters. Beverly has been active in the community, serving as President of the North Shore Branch of the American Association of University Women, member of the Sands Point Garden Club, the Plandome Women's Club, and an Elder of the Roslyn Presbyterian Church. She was an active participant in Womens Golf at the Sands Point Golf Club. She served on the Board of Helen Keller Services for the Blind and was Co-chair man of the Operating Committee. She was on the Board of the University of Idaho Foundation. She participated for many years on the Student Loan Committee for Port Washington. She has been a member of the Shelter Island Yacht Club, the Gardiner's Bay Country Club and the Shelter Island Union Chapel for nearly 20 years. She was also a member of the Fiscal Advisory Committee for the Village Club of Sands Point. She is survived by her husband, Eugene H. Luntey, and her son Kirk of Ardmore, PA. The funeral service will be private with a memorial service planned for September. She wanted and had her flowers in her lifetime. MIDDLETON - Neil on November 27, 2000, age 64; forty year resident of Lindenhurst, NY with his wife Gail. From the time he was sixteen, working after school and on weekends, until his retirement, due to illness a few years ago, Neil Middleton worked nearly his entire life for the same company as a route salesman servicing restaurants and trendy establishments on the east end of Long Island. More often than not his work schedule required 75 or more hours per week. He did leave the company for two years while serving in the United States Army but returned after his honorable discharge from the service in 1958. He met his wife Gail while she was a student at Farmingdale College. They married in 1956 and had two children; Scott who is an Attorney in Ronkonkoma, NY and Karen who is a Stock Broker in Melville, NY. Neil Middleton taught his children, the value of hard work, responsibility, loyalty, honesty and devotion to family and friends. He is survived by his wife Gail of Lindenhurst, his son Scott and daughter-in-law Elena of Lake Grove, NY. MOSEMAN - Mary Elizabeth (nee Oleksiak) on April 6, 2001 (formerly of Bellmore and Roosevelt) passed away peacefully in her 84th year. The one and only true love of the late Herbert Moseman. Mary was the mother of two devoted daughters, Barbara Ann Washelm of Setauket and Mary Lou (Sandie) Boerum of Sayville. Over the years, Mary took pleasure in spoiling her seven grandchildren, Barbara Ann, Mark, Kurt, Susan, Sharon, Sandra and Stacy. She delighted in her seven great-grandchildren as well, Melanie, Torin, Tyler, Laura, Trevor, Kira and was especially proud at the recent birth of Evan. Dear friend of Carlene Parson, Pat and "Red" Norland. Mary, one of five, was the daughter of Kosnstanty and Mathilda Oleksiak, who inspired her love of cooking and her hair dressing career. She was by nature a caring person, who was there at a moment's notice for those in need. Her passion for gardening, the time she took for her feathered friends, wonderful sense of humor, frank manner and fun loving spirit will remain with us always. We take solace in knowing she has been reunited with Herb, and imagine that the pigs' knuckles sauerkraut and beer taste even better in Heaven. O'BRIEN - Mary (Marion), age 76, of Gilboa, NY died Friday, January 12, 2001. Born May 15, 1924 in New York City, she was the daughter of Elizabeth and Patrick Kennelly. She married Daniel O'Brien on March 4, 1944. A resident of Gilboa since 1956, they owned and operated the Water fall House in Gilboa for 27 years. She was a member of St. Philip de Neri Church of Grand Gorge for 45 years. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Edward Weidman (Maureen) of Grand Gorge, Irene O'Brien of Napa, CA, Mrs. Ronald Bartow (Colleen) of Wilmington, NC, Mrs. William Byrnes (Tara) of Holbrook, NY; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. OLSON - Ruth Beckwith, a resident of Sands Point for 45 years and wife of former Sands Point Mayor, Roy C. Olson, on July 28, 2001, in Hilton Head, SC, at the age of 96. The daughter of George Granville Beckwith and Annie Tupper Beckwith, Ruth Agnes Beckwith was born on March 30, 1905 in Boston, MA, where she lived until her marriage to Roy C. Olson in 1929. She and her husband moved to Great Neck, NY in 1941 and to Sands Point in 1952, where Mrs. Olson resided until her move to The Cypress in Hilton Head, SC, in 1997. An avid gardener, nature-lover, animal-lover, prolific painter of landscapes and creator of exquisite needlepoint artistry, Ruth Olson enthusiastically dedicated her life to community service. She was a volunteer Nurse's Aide at North Shore Community Hospital, a member of the great Neck Community Scholarship Committee, a member of the North Shore Branch of the AAUW, and a long-time member of the Sands Point Garden Club, where she served as president from 1961 to 1963. Mrs Ol son is survived by her cherished daughter, Natalie Holland, of Massapequa, NY, five beloved grandchildren and eight adored great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10AM on Saturday, August 11, at the Con gregational Church on Northern Blvd., in Manhasset. O'SHEA - Philip J., 62, of Freeport, formerly of Garden City, peacefully at home on Thanksgiving Day after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Ethna Crowcock O'Shea. Insurance Agency of Garden City and Freeport for 30 years. Mr. O'Shea was also a member of Lloyd's of London. In recent years he was a Professor of Insurance at Queens College and adjunct Professor at Kingsborough Community College. Phil's greatest personal accomplishment was being the Owner/Manager and Coach of the O'Shea Slammers SemiPro Baseball Team. Well renowned, they won 825 out of 1000 games, playing from British Columbia to Hawaii. Many of his players went on to play on the professional level. Philip J. O'Shea was the son-in-law of the late Francis E. Crowcock who was memorialized on November 9, 2000 in the Newsday series ''A Generation's Legacy''. SOBIN - Antoinette A. Surrounded by family in her recently adopted Honolulu home, Antoinette(Nettie) Agresti Sobin passed away on the eve of her 85th birthday. Born on June 13, 1916 in Manhattan, Antoinette Agresti was the fifth child born toArmando and Marietta Agresti, who emigrated from Italy. Mrs. Sobin was determined to be educated even though the family lost its main breadwinner Armando when he was only 44 years old. She was graduated from Hunter College High School in January 1934, earned a Bachelor of Arts in January 1938 and a Master of Arts degree from Queens College in 1955. On July 4, 1939,Antoinette Agresti married Irving Sobin, raised two children,Dennis and Judy and created a life of work, fun songs and travel. They began their life together in Richmond Hill, Queens and ended it in Merrick, NY. After she was widowed, Mrs. Sobin and Clifford Spellman of Deer Park became companions. She often referred to this period of her life as her princess days. Mrs. Sobin retired from the New York City Board of Education, having served as a Teacher, Principal and Assistant Superintendent. After retirement, Antoinette served as Deputy Director of Labor Relations for the City of New York, as a New York State mediator and then as a consultant to various education projects, including the Training and Upgrading Program of the New York City Transit Authority and the Transport Workers Union in cooperation with the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Antoinette is survived by her children, her sister Rose Schiavone, her grandchildren Emma and Vance Lime, Antoinette Lilley, Darrin and Mylene Sobin and Teague Sobin and by her great-grandchildren Alexander and Tristan Sobin. Funeral Services for Mrs. Sobin will be held on June 19 at the N.F. Walker Funeral Home, 2039 Merrick Ave., Merrick with visiting from 2-5 and7-9pm. SOHL - John, of Syosset, a language teacher and leader in the American Association of Kidney Patients, died of heart failure Thanksgiving Day after a long illness at St. Francis Hospital, Roslyn. He was 54 and had been hospitalized for eight weeks. A lifelong resident of Long Island, Mr. Sohl courageously battled the complications of diabetes for nearly 30 years and never lost his indomitable spirit. After a kidney transplant in 1988, he joined the Long Island Chapter of AAKP and worked tirelessly on behalf of kidney patients, putting out the organization's newsletter and serving as its Executive Director from 1988 to 1991. A natural-born teacher, Mr. Sohl, who was educated at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, taught German in Nassau Community College Adult Education and English as a Second Language at the Hicksville Adult Education Program. He previously taught Spanish and German at Brookside Junior High School in Merrick. Despite his failing health in recent years, he took pleasure and pride in introducing the English language and American customs to countless immigrants in his adult classes. Mr. Sohl was born in Jamaica, N.Y., on April 5, 1946, to Mary nee Davidson and John Sohl, Sr. His mother died when he was 17, and his father, a German immigrant who operated a business in Rockville Centre, died in 1973. Because of his German roots and close contact with relatives who remained behind in Germany, Mr. Sohl took a leadership role in Long Island's German - American community. He was the founder and leader of Dev Heimatstamm. A talented raconteur with a quick wit who found humor everywhere, Mr. Sohl entertained family and friends with stories about his youth, his classes and even his illnesses. It was not unusual to find guests staying until late into the night in his living room or patio as they listened to his stories and memories. Mr. Sohl married the former Barbara Becht, whom he always referred to as the "light of my life" on July 24, 1971, at St. Edward the Confessor Church in Syosset. He is survived by Barbara, who is Director of Customer Service at Broadview Networks in Long Island City. Also surviving is his beloved dog and constant companion, Casey. Mr. Sohl is also survived by his beloved sister, Betty Walters of Bohemia; his brother, Robert Sohl of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his uncle, Henry Sohl of Oradell, N.J.; fifteen nieces and nephews; sixteen great - nieces and nephews, and three great-great-nieces and nephews.
