Cisco R. Ortiz
Cisco R. Ortiz, 68, of Jacinto City, passed away June 9, 2003. Cisco was born March 28, 1935 in Weesatche, Texas to Eufemio & Vacilia Ortiz. He had worked for O&M Manufacturing for 38 years, retiring in 2000. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Yolanda in 2000. He is survived by children, Cisco Ortiz, Jr. & wife Michelle Nagle of Jacinto City; Dennis Ortiz & Lena Rohne of Deer Park; Eugene & Blanca Ortiz of Sugarland; John Ortiz of Jacinto City; Saraita & Jaime Doria of Jacinto City; Sylvia & Martin Rubio of Indianapolis, Indiana; Annette & Alan Snider of West Virginia; Jeanette Ortiz & Salvador Sanchez of Houston; Joanna & Steven Wright of Houston; and Judith & Jihad Dergham of Channelview; as well as sister, Santos Acosta of Bryan, Texas; 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services were June 12 at Carter Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Brockhan officiating.
Loma Lee Rodgers
Mrs. Loma Lee Rodgers, 90, of Galena Park, went to be with her Lord June 8, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forest A. Rodgers. She is survived by sons, Forest R. Rodgers of Galena Park; David F. Rodgers & wife Sally of Lake Charles Louisiana; as well as 4 grand-children and 3 great grandchildren. A private graveside service was held at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests donations be sent in her memory to Galena Park Methodist Church, 1712 2nd Street, Galena Park TX 77547.
Peggy "Sharon" Graham
Monday morning July 28, 2003, Peggy "Sharon" Graham went to meet her Lord. She was born Aug. 26, 1946 in Birmingham, Alabama. She resided in Houston, Texas and is survived by her husband of 41 years, Robert "Raymond" Graham; Children and their spouses, Dwayne & Sylvia Graham of Houston and Tim & Teresa Duensing of Kingwood; five grandchildren, Raymond, Bobby "Cord", and Michael Graham; Kristen & Kathryn Duensing; two brothers, Lawrence Lee of Birmingham, Alabama and Richard Lee of Bessemer, Alabama.
She worked for Channelview I.S.D. for 26 years and she will be remembered by family and friends for her wonderful smile and caring spirit to everyone she met. A Celebration of Sharon's life was held Thursday, July 31, 2003 at the Cathedral of Praise Assembly of God Church in Houston with Pastor Ronnie Jordan officiating. She was laid to rest in San Jacinto Memorial Park under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family requests donations be made to the Cathedral of Praise Church, 11303 C.E. King, Parkway, Houston Texas 77044.
John David Horton
John David Horton, 42, of Houston, passed away July 26, 2003. Born November 15, 1959 here in Houston. He is survived by sons, John Willie Horton, William Mein and Wesley Mein; mother of sons, Melinda ; mother, Martha Horton and father, William E. Horton; sister, Polly Jonas; and brothers, William Earl Horton, Dennis Wayne Horton, Robert Malcolm Horton, James Edward Horton and Mark Anthony Horton; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 30, 2003 in Christian Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas where he was laid to rest.
Orie Jackson Edwards
Orie Jackson Edwards, 80, of Pittsburg, Texas, formerly of Houston, Texas, passed away July 10, 2003. Mr. Edwards was born April 29, 1923 in Fulton, Arkansas to Claude J. & Lillian N. Edwards. He had retired from Armco Steel in Houston after 41 years. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred J. Baker Edwards; sons, Jack Edwards of Pittsburg, Texas; Jim Edwards of Omaha, Nebraska and Jackson Edwards of Beaumont, Tx; daughters, Jeanny Wooldridge of Grandbury, Texas; Carolyn Henson of LaPorte, Texas; Brenda Spreen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; & Dawn Edwards of Dayton, Texas; brothers, Doyle Edwards of Hughes Springs, Texas; and Wilton Edwards of Daingerfield, Texas; sisters, Almarene Cox of Hope, Arkansas and Virgie Hatfield of Dallas, Texas; as well as 18 grand- children and eleven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, July 12, 2003 in the San Jacinto Memorial Park Cemetery pavilion with Rev. Robert Massey officiating.
Hazel Hope Smith
Mrs. Hazel Hope Smith, 86, of Channelview, went to be with her Lord, July 9, 2003. She was born April 5, 1917 in Lecompte, Louisiana to Darius & Emily Saunders. She married Helem C. Smith on August 18, 1938. She was a resident of Channelview since 1944 and a 41 year member of Memorial Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a nursery worker for 25 years; She was active, as well, with the Senior Citizens at the V.V. Ramsey Community Center.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, H.C. Smith of Channelview; son, Charles David Smith of Channelview; daughters, Addie Louise Smith of Houston and Gayle Doris Evans of Copley, PA.; brother, Otis E. Saunders of Channelview; and sisters, Raines Holden of Turkey Creek, Louisiana and Joycie Cope of Patterson, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Glenn Smith in 1997.
Services were Friday, July 11, at Memorial Baptist Church in Channelview with Rev. Bruce Whitmire & Rev. Jack Bailey officiating. She was laid to rest in San Jacinto Memorial Park under the direction of Carter Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Gene Scarbrough, Don Scarbrough, Roy Gonzales, Richard Silva, Jim Millican & Paul Beight.
Justin Dean Wright
Justin Dean Wright, 22, of Hahnville, Louisiana, formerly of the North Channel area, passed away suddenly August 29, 2003. Justin was born May 4, 1981 here in Houston. He is survived by father & stepmother, Billy & Patty Wright of Houston; mother & stepfather, Vanessa & Scott Constantin of Rayne, Louisiana; brothers, Christopher Wright of Houston and Nicholas Strother of Deer Park, Texas; grandparents, Gene & Sharen Kelley of Alvin, Texas and Calice & JoAn Constantin of Rayne, Louisiana; aunts & uncles, Jackie & Mike Clapper & sons, Beth & Floyd Barnes & Zack, Rhonda Kelley, and Dana & Larry Gerahian & family.
Services were held Tuesday evening September 2, 2003 at Carter Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Haymon officiating. Justin was laid to rest Wednesday morning in San Jacinto Memorial Park.
Ruby Phillips
Mrs. Ruby Phillips, 83, of Pasadena, formerly of Houston, went to be with her Lord, August 19, 2003. She was born November 22, 1919 to Edward & Willie Farrill in Rockland, Texas. She had worked as a custodian for Jacinto City Elementary retiring after 23 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister Gena Metzler, grandson August W. Kalmus, Jr. and by her beloved husband Basil Phillips. She is lovingly survived by son, Chuck Phillips of Jacinto City ; daughters & sons-in-law, Kay & Vernon Thomas of Pasadena; Sharon & Kenneth Dunsmore of Galena Park ; Susan & Edward Gammon of Shelton ; and Sandra & A.W. Kalmus of Victoria, Texas. She also leaves three brothers, J.D. Farrill of Votaw, Texas ; R.C. Farrill and Edward P. Farrill both of Houston ; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A celebration of Ms. Ruby's life was held 10 a.m. Friday, Augsut 22, at Carter Funeral Chapel with Pastor James Morris officiating. She was laid to rest in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Woodville, Texas.
Annie Champion
Mrs. Annie E. Champion, 86, of Channelview, went to be with her Lord August 12, 2003. Mrs. Champion was born July 6, 1917 in Redlands, California to Everette & Frances Martinez. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dee Champion in 1981. She is lovingly survived by son & daughter-in-law, Donald & Shirley Champion; daughters & sons-in-law, Susie & Carl Savage; Patsy Spiers and Mary Ann & Robert Reed. As well as by sister, Esther Avila, twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. A celebration of Annie's life was held Friday, August 15, 2003 at Bayshore Baptist Church in Channelview with Pastor Kris Minefee officiating. She was laid to rest in San Jacinto Memorial Park under the direction of Carter Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were Buddy Blevins, Andrew Pflueger, Kyle Patterson, Jason Minefee, Tim Neely and Ted Lewis. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
David Oneal Brownell
David Oneal Brownell, 55, of Channelview, passed away following a tragic accident Sept. 17, 2003. He was born January 12, 1948 in Baskin, Louisiana to David O'Neil & Luz Brownell. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man, dedicated to his family, and to helping children. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He was a 27 year resident of the North Channel area and at the time of his death was employed by Pro Tire Co.; and for the past 13 years he was a Santa Claus for Ms. Claus Productions, appearing at various malls and events throughout Houston. Preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lucy, earlier this year, Mr. Brownell is survived by his wife Karen, whom he married Oct. 26, 1973; sons, David Brownell, Jason Brownell, Val Pacheco and Robert "Bobby" Pacheco, all of Channelview; daughters, Mary Turner and Terry Bohte, both of Magnolia; Doreen Shields of California; and Angie Grace Pierce of Clear Lake; father, David O. Brownell of Bastrop, Louisiana; brothers, Ricky Brownell, Mike Brownell and Donald Brownell all of Channelview; sister, Toni Gautreaux of Channelview; grandchildren, Ashley Mandjuano, Desiree Pacheco, Lauren Pacheco, Romeo Pacheco, Cassie Overland, Gwen Overland, Nicolas Bohte, Leeandra Bohte, Felicia Bohte, Amber Shields, Dallas Grace, and Sidney Grace; close friends Deryl & Deborah McKenzie; other relatives and many, many friends.
Funeral Services were conducted in Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Rob Morris, of River Pointe Church, officiating. Cremation followed the service.
Dorothy Allene Koppa
Dorothy Allene Koppa, known to many as Aunt Rene or Mom-maw, 84 of Richmond, formerly of Houston, went to be with her Lord September 15, 2003. She was born May 15, 1919 in Floresville, Texas. Mrs. Koppa had lived in the Northshore area most of her life and was a charter member of Woodforest Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John William Koppa, Sr., by sons, John William Koppa, Jr. and Tommy Gene Koppa. She is survived by son & daughter-in-law, Tom G. & Libby Koppa of Sugarland; brother, Wayne Dennis and sister, Letha Mae Gann, both of San Antonio; and sister-in-law, Della Wofford of Conroe, Texas; grandchildren, Kent Koppa & wife Tammy, Chris Koppa, Kristin Koppa Strain & husband Chris, and Kerry Koppa; as well as great-grandchildren, Macey Koppa, Brooke Koppa, Blake Strain and Madison Strain. Services were 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at Carter Funeral Chapel with Rev. John A. Brady officiating. She was laid to rest in a private interment
in San Jacinto Memorial Park.
Elva Hernandez
Elva Hernandez, 63, of Houston passed away October 23, 2003 in Pasadena, Texas. She was born November 4, 1939 in Runge, Texas to Francisco & Edubigues De Los Santos. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Juan Alberto Hernandez of Houston; sons, Juan Alberto Hernandez, Jr. and Jose Angel Hernandez both of Houston; step-daughter, Angie Munoz of Houston; brothers & sisters, Frank DeLosSantos and Rosa Martinez both of Houston; Gloria De Los Santos, Arnulfo DeLos Santos, Arnoldo De Los Santos, all of Corpus Christi; Olga Mendiola and Jimmy De Los Santos also of Houston; as well as by several grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday October 25, at Carter Funeral Chapel with Father Robert Carlson of Our Lady of Fatima as celebrant. She was laid to rest in San Jacinto Memorial Park.
Edward Thomas Helbert
Edward Thomas Helbert, 85, of Houston, went to be with his Lord October 21, 2003. He was born February 17, 1918 in Rogers, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II with service in the U.S. Army. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and was captured 13 days later where he was confined to a German POW camp for 12 months. He married Antha L. Register on April 3, 1942 and moved to Houston in 1949, later settling in the North Channel area in 1954.
He was a member of Uvalde Baptist Church where he was ordained a deacon in 1956. He retired from Texaco after 32 years; was a member of the POW Gulf Coast Chapter and was an active volunteer at the VA Hospital and the Leon Grayson Center. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Antha Helbert; son & daughter-in- law, Tom & Sally Helbert; brother, J.C. Helbert; and sister, Bertie Faye Gandy; as well as 5 grandchildren, Brian & Sue Helbert, Dean & Laura Hobbs, Wes Hobbs, Deann Hobbs and Will Hobbs; and great-grand-children, Zack Hammers, Tyler Helbert, Justin Helbert & Lily Hobbs.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday October 27 at Uvalde Baptist Church, with Rev. Galen Cooper officiating. Interment
followed in Houston National Cemetery with full military honors by the V.F.W. District 4 Memorial Team under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Bettye Louise Waters
Bettye Louise Waters, 83, of South Houston, passed away October 20, 2003. She was born July 24, 1920 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Horace & Margaret Waters. She is survived by son, John Blau of South Houston; daughter-in-law, Darlene Owens, brother, Wayne Waters; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
A graveside service was held Monday, October 24, 2003 in South Park Cemetery in Pearland, Texas under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
