In Memory Of Jean Clark
1923 - 2005
Jean W. Clark passed away on November 69, 2005 in Tempe Arizona.
Jean was born in Caruthers, California in 1923 and adopted at birth by John and Myrtle Whiteside. She spent her childhood in Glenn, California, attending Glenn Elementary and Princeton High School. She received her nurses training at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco during World War II.
Her first nursing job was at Enloe Hospital in Chico. She arrived in the Fall River Valley with her husband, Tom Hollinger, and her two children, Dick and Kathy, in 1950. Shortly, thereafter, with the necessity to support her two children alone, she worked for Dr. Mayer in his practice. As the local doctors came and went, she also worked for Drs. Bostwick, Howlett, and Nugent. After Mayers Memorial was opened, she worked in the hospital that she was instrumental in bringing to fruition. Her favorite part of nursing was being in the emergency room.
Jean married Dudley Clark in 1954 and became active in the ranching business at the family farm, Tudud Ranch. At about the same time, Jean became a Shasta County school nurse, and serviced all of the schools in eastern Shasta County. On the weekends, she worked at the hospital and was a frequent volunteer on ambulance runs from Mayers Memorial to Redding. To keep her nursing license current, Jean attended night school at Shasta College on night every week.
Jean was proud of the fact that she was involved and continuing care of three generations of local families. She was Social Services before there was such a thing. She knew who the needy families were and personally delivered food, clothing, and toys at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
With her marriage to Dudley, his daughter Susan became a member of the family. After the age of twelve, Susie spent the rest of her summers in the Fall River Valley, and eventually married a local rancher, Steve Knoch, and became a permanent resident. She and her step-mom enjoyed coffee together at Jean's most mornings.
In the early 70's, Jean and Dud became interested in the Mexican life style. At the urging of Lucio Cordova, a long-time ranch employee, they visited San Pedro de la Cueva in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Falling in love with the pueblo, they bought a house there. To stay busy in Mexico, Jean operated an exclusive fishing camp in San Pedro, catering to renowned bass fishermen from all p[arts of the U.S. who would fly in on their private planes. She provided home-cooked meals, beds, and fishing boats to her clientele, which included Ray Scott, the founder of Bass Masters, Mr. Coleman, who was known for his camping supply equipment and Larry Bell, of Taco Bell, among others.
In Mexico, Jean became acquainted with a whole new group of close friends, including other Americans and many influential locals in Sonora. She really enjoyed her time in Mexico, especially dancing on New Years Eve in the Plaza.
Being so proud of the fact that she was adopted, Jean 'adopted' Lucio and became grandmother to Monica, Chris, and Andy. Jean was lovingly known as "Gram" to all of her grandchildren: Rodney, Kimberly, Monica, Stefanie, Joshua, Chris, and Andy. For at last seven years, Gram and the grandkids went on trips together in her motorhome. Parents weren't allowed, but they all heard about the great times. She was also a very proud great-grandmother to Marah, Bandon, Ellie, and Katelyn.
After Dudley's passing in 1982, and in her retirement, Jean remained active in the community. She bought a house on the golf course and became active in the Fall River women's golf group. She continued her services volunteering on ambulance runs, and was also a Red Cross volunteer during the Fountain Fire.
In 1991 Jean bought a winter residence in Ajo, Arizona and became a permanent resident in 2002. Again, she involved herself in the local community and became active in the Lady Elks and the Chu Chu Club in Ajo. Here she met a whole new group of people: some snowbirds and many local residents, who called her one of their own.
All who knew Jeanie remember her as a lady who was always active and a person whom one could depend on for whatever help or comfort was required.
She will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. She leaves her three children, Richard Hollinger and wife Lin of Camarillo, Kathy MacFarlane and husband Michael of Ajo, AZ, and Susie Knoch and husband Steve of Glenburn. She is survived by the seven grandchildren previously mentioned and the four great-grandchildren also mentioned. She leaves her closest remaining relative, cousin Frank Dillard and wife Millie of Hawaii.
A celebration of her life will be held on November 29th at noon in the Veterans' Hall in Fall River Mills, following a private graveside service at Pine Grove Cemetery. A memorial service will also be held in Arizona at the Ajo Elks Lodge on January 4, 2006.
Jean has passed on but will never be forgotten.
