James Mock
December 5th, 2004
James was born to Arthur and Ester Mock on December 17, 1925 in Camdenton county Missouri about ½ mile from the homesteaded farm of his grandfather Mock. He was born James Hubert Mock, however when his dad went to register all his children for a ration book during World War II, he forgot his middle name, so he said just put down HENRY. So, he has been called JIM HENRY ever since.
James was raised on the homesteaded farm until he went to Kansas City to get his first “real” job. He was working at the Pickwick Hotel scrubbing the floor when the president of the hotel noticed his extra large hands and asked him how old he was? He said that he was 18 years old and the president told him to get a hair cut, finger nails cleaned and a uniform and to report back to him for a different job. When he returned to the president he said that with hands that large James had to be 18 and changed his position to BELL HOP.
James met Mary “Lee” Brooks on a blind date set up by his brother, Norman, at the Jordan church. After a three month period he and Lee were married. All their friends and family said “it would never last”, 60+ years later they proved them wrong.
Three months later he was inducted into the United States Army at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He was stationed on the Hawaii Island and packed and loaded to go to Saipan when the “A Bomb” was dropped. So his orders were cancelled and he was sent to Camp Crowder where he was honorably discharged as a Supply Staff Sergeant on May 15th, 1946. He was always very proud of his service to HIS country.
James & Lee moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1947, then on to Independence, MO where they lived and raised two daughters, Sharon & Karen.
James worked several different jobs during his life, however, he worked and retired from Shoco Awning Company, Independence, Mo. During the last 10 years of employment James & Lee worked together night and day. They had the opportunity to retire when they were still young, a little over 23 years ago, and got to do some traveling and fishing that they had always wanted to do.
James & Lee were very proud of their gardening ability. They always had a very productive garden and loved to give away the various produce to all their friends and relatives. He would never sell any of his huge tomatoes because he believed that they were gifts from God. However, if someone insisted on paying for the produce, James would not take the money and ask them to just put the money into the offering plate on Sunday morning.
James is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary “Lee”, of the home, two daughters, Sharon Jobe and her husband, Steve and Karen Caskey, and her husband, David, all of Blue Springs; one sisters, Edna Greene, of Raytown and one brother, Norman Mock of Independence, four granddaughters, and twelve great-grandchildren.
James was a devoted Christian and family man. He always showed his love and took great pride in his family. He was a very caring and kind gentleman. He enjoyed visits from his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, but was happiest when the great love of his life, Mary Lee, was by his side. James will be missed by his family and all that knew him.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Cross Timbers, Missouri. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M., Wednesday, at the Reser Funeral Home, 101 W. Main Street, Warsaw, MO.
