Richard Murray
Died On October 6, 2000
Richard R. Murray, 84, of Nevada, died October 6, 2000 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center. The son of Richard E. and Zelma Faye Sproull Murray, he was born July 22, 1916 in Montrose, MO. He was a graduate of the high school in Montrose, MO in 1934. He was united in marriage to Maxine Barnhart on December 20, 1936 in Montrose, Missouri and she preceded him in death October 25, 1998. Mr. and Mrs. Murray moved to Nevada, MO in 1942. He was first employed by Ellis Furniture and then the Richardson Motor Company. He later worked for the Myers Motor Supply and then the Wysong Motor Company. Mr. Murray also worked during most of this time as a projectionist for the Nemo and the Arbo Theaters. He became full- time projectionist at the Fox Theater and the Trail Drive-In in 1959. In 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Murray became two of the first four Emergency Medical Technicians in Nevada, Missouri, working for the Eichinger Funeral Home (which later became Milster Funeral Home). Mr. Murray served as a volunteer fireman for the City of Nevada for many years. Mr. Murray was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class. He assisted his wife for many years at the Sharing Table at the church. He was also a member of the Vernon County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He had served on their Board of Directors for over twenty years and served as their Disaster Chairman. He helped with many blood drives, even willing to use the "little red wagon" to pick up those who wanted to donate blood. Mr. and Mrs. Murray helped for many years with the coat and blanket drive. He was a member of the Missouri Firefighters Association and the Motion Picture Association. He served in the Civil Air Patrol during the forties and also served as an Assistant Scout Master. He was selected as Rotary Citizen of the Year in 1990 and was named to the Order of Distinguished Older Missourians in 1990. Mr. Murray loved to repair clocks, audio tapes, stereos and T.V.'s. He was a long time supporter of the Nevada High School Tiger Pride Band. He enjoyed attending their early morning practices and became an Honorary Band Parent on May 6, 1996. Survivors include 3 sons, Robert E. Murray and his wife Betty of Springfield, Missouri, Larry C. Murray and his wife Joyce of Wellsville, Kansas and D.J. "Jim" Murray and his wife Jenny of Leavenworth, Kansas. One daughter, Donna Iser and her husband Charles of Kansas City, Missouri and one brother, Larry L. Murray of Rifle, CO. 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren also survive. Mr. Murray was also preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Murray and his parents. Funeral services will be Monday, October 9, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Nevada with Rev. Stephen Barth officiating. Interment

Sue Mundy

Sue Laverne Mundy, 76, Sheldon, MO, passed away Sunday afternoon, November 11, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. She was born January 29, 1925, in Russellville, AR, to David Jefferson Morris and Abbie Dee Price Morris. She married Alfred Mundy, Sr. on August 3, 1944, in Russellville, AR, and he survives of the home. She was born and raised in Russellville, AR, and came to Vernon County in 1954 and has resided in the Sheldon area since 1957. She was a Baptist and a homemaker. Survivors in addition to her husband, Alfred, include two sons, Alfred Mundy, Jr., Sheldon, MO, and Thomas Edward Mundy, Golden, CO; three daughters, Sandra Sue Cromer, Knob Knoster, MO, Delores Ann Swearingin, Eagle Pass, TX, and Shirley Lee McKay, Marshall, MO; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Wayne Morris, and one sister, Lorraine Parsons, both of the state of California. She was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2001, at Sheldon Cemetery with Donald Swearingin officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Thursday at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO, where friends may call Tuesday morning and until the hour of service. Seigul "Sig" Mouser

Seigul “Sig” Mouser, 72, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday afternoon May 17, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada. He was born December 7, 1928, in Eufaula, OK, the son of Ernest Guy Mouser and America Elizabeth Gawf Mouser. He married Betty Lou Beisch on December 25, 1946, in Muskogee, OK. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1998. Sig graduated from Eufaula High School in 1946. He was a salesman in Oklahoma for a number of years before coming to Nevada in 1961 to manage Yeager Wholesale Drug Co. Several years later he became owner of the Nevada Auto Parts and El Dorado Springs Auto Parts Stores where he worked for many years until his retirement. Survivors include one son, Robert K. Mouser and wife Darya, Lake St. Louis, MO; one daughter, Linda L. Bussinger and husband, John, Nevada, MO; four grandsons, Michael Mouser, Ryan Bussinger, Matthew Mouser, and John B. Bussinger; two sisters, Ruth Palmer, Amber, OK, and Lynelle Emmons, twin sister, McCallister, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Leota Deacon. Graveside services will be at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, on Monday, May 21, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Steve Barth officiating. Audrey Elizabeth “Lingwood” Morris, 85, Baldwin City, KS, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away Monday morning, May 21, 2001, at the Olathe Medical Center in Olathe following a brief illness. She was born September 15, 1915, in Lacygne, KS, the daughter of Thomas Lingwood and Ollie Catherine Hodgson Lingwood. She married A. V. Morris on April 20, 1938, in Pleasanton, KS, and he preceded her in death on January 14, 1982. Mrs. Morris was born and raised around Lacygne, KS. She and her husband worked in evangelism and the ministry for a lifetime. She lived for many years in Nevada and pastored the local Church of God Holiness for a number of years. Survivors include one daughter, Rosetta Faye Barber, California state; one grandson, Lauren Barber, California state; one sister, Earline McGinnis and husband, Lee, Wellsville, KS; one nephew, Don McGinnis, Quenemo, KS, one niece, Sheri Baugh and husband, Joe, Mound City, KS; and a number of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Arthur & Donald Lingwood, her parents, and husband. Robert Moore

Robert Lynn Moore, 71, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, June 21, 2001, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO. He was born February 21, 1930, in Kalamazoo, MI, to Robert Frank Moore and Linnet Dorothy Jackson. Bob was born in Michigan and moved to Springfield at the age of two and to Kansas City at the age of 12. He graduated from Paseo High School in 1947. He attended Kansas City Junior College and graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order during his college years. He spent four years in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957. He was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church. Bob worked 16 years for First Finance Company in Nevada. He owned, operated, and managed a number of restaurants in his lifetime. Bob is survived by one sister, Carolyn J. Hall, Pittsburg, PA. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2001, at the All Saints Episcopal Church, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Mimi Savidge officiating. Carl Mitchum

Carl Dee Mitchum, 59, Nevada, MO, passed away suddenly Thursday morning, February 1, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. He was born October 7, 1941, in Nevada, MO, to Carl Compton Mitchum and Violet J. Watson Mitchum. Carl graduated from Nevada High School in 1959. He was a Baptist. He served in the U.S. Navy until his discharge and then moved back to Nevada where he spent the rest of his life. Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Mitchum (address unknown); mother, Violet Mitchum, Independence, MO; two sisters, Joy Hargrove, Austin, TX, and Deborah Welch, Independence, MO, seven nieces and nephews. Frederick W. Mitchell, 80, Deerfield, MO passed away Friday afternoon, February 16, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Eve, MO April 13, 1920 to the late Walter Jenkins Mitchell and Lena M. Beaman Mitchell. He was married November 8, 1942 in Eve, MO to Wilma Johnson Mitchell. She preceded him in death in 1968. Mr. Mitchell was born and raised in Vernon County, MO. He worked for a time for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS, before returning to Vernon County, where he farmed for a lifetime. Ada Faye “Willhoite” Melton, 86, Sheldon, MO passed away Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2001 at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO following a lengthy illness. She was born October 13, 1914 in Jerico Springs, MO to the late James Willhoite and Jennie Humphrey Willhoite. She was married December 25, 1936 in Lamar, MO to Carl Melton who survives of the home. Mrs. Melton was a member of Sheldon Christian Church, Sheldon, MO and worked at the Sheldon School as a cook for 28 years, retiring at the age of 70. Along with her husband, Carl, survivors include two sons, Gary Melton and wife Carol, Lamar, MO, Tom Melton and wife Beverly, Sheldon, MO; one daughter, Leta Chrisenberry and husband Harold, Garland, TX; four grandchildren, Darrell Chrisenberry, Ryan Chrisenberry, Deanna Melton and Dakota Melton; two step-grandchildren, Bonnie Behrend and Troy Holzbach; two great-grandchildren, Carl “Chris” Chrisenberry and Wyatt Chrisenberry; five step-great-grandchildren, Conner Sitzes, Darek Gamble, Jakob Hilzbach, Keaton Holzbach and Samantha Sitzes; one sister, Loretta Burmeter, Lamar, MO; many nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Lydia Belle Means, 97, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday morning, January 28, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO. She was born November 1, 1903, in Wheatland, OK, to William Benton Tiner and Merti Ella Wynn Tiner. She married James Delmar Means on November 7, 1926, in Hominy, OK, and he preceded her in death in 1944. Mrs. Means was the oldest of eight children. She was baptized a Christian. She grew up in Oklahoma before coming to Nevada with her husband in 1930. She managed Beisly’s for a number of years following her husband’s death until she retired in 1984. She volunteered at Spirit and Truth Christian Center for many years following her retirement. Survivors include one daughter, Nelda Jo McAdoo, Nevada, MO; four grandchildren, Sharon Turner, Nevada, MO, Cathy Wilheim, Wichita, KS, Nick McAdoo, and Jack McAdoo, both of Nevada; four great-grandchildren, Eric Turner, K.C., MO, Mark Turner, Nevada, MO, J.R. Wilheim, New York, NY, and Zachary McAdoo, Republic, MO; one great-great-granddaughter, Lydia Brynn Turner, K.C., MO, and one younger sister who resides in California. Everett Lee McWilliams, 91, Sheldon, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 6, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born September 24, 1910, in Barton County, MO, to Adam Francis McWilliams and Blanche Elizabeth Gilmore McWilliams. He married Mabel Danley on October 21, 1933, in Nevada, MO. She preceded him in death on November 18, 1997. Mr. McWilliams was born and raised in Barton County. He moved to Sheldon in 1944 and spent the remainder of his life there. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Sheldon, MO. He made his living primarily as a mechanic. After retirement, he worked for many years at the Sheldon School recently receiving recognition for 18 years of service. Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Mankins and Betty Bobbett, both of Augusta, KS; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd McWilliams, Nevada, MO, and Glenn McWilliams, Parsons, KS. Milford Ivan “Bill” McKenzie, 69, Lamar, MO, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2001, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born March 2, 1932, in Liberal, MO, to Alvin McKenzie and Florence Kellogg McKenzie. He married Thelma Pressler on December 12, 1961, in Lamar, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. McKenzie was born and raised in the Liberal-Lamar area and spent virtually his entire lifetime in the Barton County area. He made his living as a welder working for Thorco in Lamar for 39 years, retiring in 1995. Survivors in addition to his wife, Thelma, include on son, David A. McKenzie, Lamar, MO, five daughters, Kandi Boston, Lebanon, MO, Catherine Logsdon, Lamar, MO, Darla McKenzie, Key West, FL, Melissa Popp, Pittsburg, KS, and Susan Weber, Milford, MO, four grandsons, one great-grandson; one brother, Marvin McKenzie, Lamar, MO; two sisters, Alvenna Valentine, Lamar, MO, and Mary Jane Kaderly, Belton, MO; one stepbrother, Leo Taft, Jr., Milford, MO; two stepsisters, Rosalee Casey, Lockwood, MO, and Mary Lou Taft, Joplin, MO, 23 nieces and nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Roy; one sister, Mildred Lindsey, and one niece, Cindy Gray. William McDermott

William Joseph “Bill” McDermott, Sr., 82, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2000, in Sheldon, MO. He was born September 14, 1918, in Polk County, MO, to Michael John McDermott and Ellen Reilly McDermott. Mr. McDermott was raised in Polk County and lived most of his life there. He had lived in Sheldon the past 3 ½ years. Surviving children include Eleanor Willson, Nevada, MO, Betsey Medearis, Sahuarita, AZ, Regina Sewell, rural Sheldon, MO, Bill McDermott, Jr., Sheldon, MO, and Patricia Olson, Plymouth, WI. Also surviving children from a second marriage include, JoAnn Adams and John McDermott, both of Nevada, MO, Linda Gammon, Sheldon, MO, Norma Smith, Excelsior Springs, MO, several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother. Graveside services will be Friday, December 29, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Bolivar, MO. Gladys Maxwell

Gladys Katherine Maxwell, 91, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday night, December 21, 2000, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born October 22, 1909, in Marshall County, KS, to James Franklin Rowland and Mary Bessie Hanson Rowland. She married Leon Maxwell on April 26, 1931, in Axtell, KS. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1986. Mrs. Maxwell was a graduate of Maryville High School and of Cottey College. She taught school in Frankfort, KS, prior to her marriage. Following her marriage, she and her husband spent most of their married life in Nevada where she worked in the Maxwell Stores as a checker and bookkeeper until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Nevada, and the Athenas MFWC. She was also active in “Make Today Count” (a support group). For many years, she volunteered in Community Outreach. Survivors include four grandchildren, Todd Maxwell, Kansas City, MO, Kimberlee Bishop, Tulsa, OK, Kristi Tackett, Tulsa, OK, and Andrea Maxwell Hernandez, Lawrence, KS, three great-grandchildren, and one brother, Kenneth Rowland, Louisville, KY. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Herd, and one son, Thomas Maxwell. Albert Joseph Martinez, 77, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday evening, November 4, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 11, 1923, in Albuquerque, NM. He married Adrian Frances Beringer in September 1953, in Scotia, NY. She preceded him in death on January 4, 1998. Albert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He served in the Navy during WW II in the South Pacific for 11 years from 1942-1953. He worked as a mechanic most of his lifetime. He has lived in Nevada the past 30 years. Survivors include one son, Stacy Martinez, Preston, MO; one stepdaughter, Charlotte Goddard, Nevada; five grandsons, Wayne Ring, Joplin, MO, Shawn and Jeff Ring, both of Nevada, MO, David Goddard, Wichita, KS, and Michael Goddard, state of Kansas; three granddaughters, Tina McNeece, Milo, MO, and Ashley Martinez, K.C., MO, and Tina Sitz, Milo, MO, 18 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Buddy Ziegler, and one sister, Charlotte Mann, both of Albuquerque, NM, and several nieces and nephews. Mildred V. Martin, 95, Walker, MO, passed away Tuesday morning, March 6, 2001, in Walker, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born August 27, 1905, in Nevada, MO, to Jacob Souders and Sarah Myers Souders. She married Codie W. Martin on July 30, 1927, in Nevada, MO. He preceded her in death on July 21, 1981. Mrs. Martin was born and raised in Nevada, MO, and spent virtually her entire life here. She was a Baptist. She worked for Montgomery Ward in her early years and then worked for Camp Clark during WWII. She later was also employed by Edmiston’s clothing, Maxwell Locker, and General Adjustment Bureau. She volunteered as a scheduler for the Oats Bus for many years. Survivors include one daughter, Lois Stinnett, Walker, MO, three granddaughters, Karen Lamke and Kassia Smith, both of Walker, MO, and Janice Petty, Nevada, MO, and two great-grandchildren. Caroline “Lena” Margaret Post Martin, 92, Raymore, MO, formerly of Moundville, MO, passed away Wednesday morning, November 28, 2001, at Foxwood Springs Living Center, Raymore, MO. She was born January 8, 1909, near Moundville, MO. She married Clarence Welborn Martin on March 24, 1933, and lived on a farm near Moundville for 60 years She was a member of the First Christian Church, Nevada. Survivors include three sons, James Martin, Redfield, KS, Bill Martin, Raymore, MO, and Roy Martin, Lancaster, CA; one daughter, Eleanor Fine, Independence, MO; as well as 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Elmer Post, Nevada, MO, and one sister, Lucille Pettibon Butner, both of Nevada, MO. Alvin Longstreth

Alvin Meredith Longstreth, 89, Moundville, MO, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2000, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness. He was born on November 19, 1911, in Richards, MO, to Ray Fred Longstreth and Laura E. Graves Longstreth. He was married to Bonnie R. Ledgerwood on March 5, 1960, in Springfield, MO, and she survives of the home. Alvin graduated from Nevada High School in 1931. He served in the United States Navy from 1938-1945. He served on the U.S.S. Mississippi during WWII as a Chief Pharmacists’s Mate. He was a member of the Sylvandale Baptist Church and Osage Masonic Lodge #303. He was a 4-H leader and 4-H project leader for many years. Alvin owned and operated Longstreth’s Supermarket in Nevada from 1945-1958. He worked at the Nevada State Hospital as an LPN for 20 years retiring in 1972. He has also been involved in farming for the past 40 years. Survivors in addition to his wife, Bonnie, include two sons, Ronald Longstreth, Clear Creek, KY, and Kent Longstreth, Moundville; two daughters, Carmen Patty, Olathe, KS, and Juanita Longstreth, Moundville, MO, three grandchildren, Meredith Nicole Patty, Brook Meredith Longstreth, and Barron Longstreth, and one brother, Claude Woody Longstreth, Pittsburg, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Winford Longstreth, and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with John Nichols officiating. Interment
will follow at Newton Burial Park. Friends may call from Tuesday afternoon until the hour of service on Thursday. Noel Farris Long, age 67 of Stillwell, KS, passed away suddenly Thursday afternoon, February 8, 2001, at St. Luke’s South Hospital in Kansas City, KS. He was born November 8, 1933, in Caney, KS, to Clinton and Gladys Long. He married Allene Levaugh on December 19, 1958 in Nevada, MO and she survives of the home in Stillwell, KS. Mr. Long graduated from Caney High School in Caney, KS. Following high school he served in the United States Army. Following his service in the Army he graduated from Coffeyville Community College. He then received his masters degree from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS. He retired from the Shawnee Mission West High School after thirty years of teaching. He was a member of the Johnson County Christian Church, Overland Park, KS. He and his wife had lived in the Kansas City area for the past 38 years. Survivors in addition to his wife, Allene, include one son, Gary Long, of the home; one sister, Dorothy Sinksen, Corinth, NY; mother-in-law, Anna Lee Levaugh, Milo, MO and one aunt, Louise Levaugh, Nevada, MO. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister in addition to his parents. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at the Milo Cemetery, Milo MO with Rev. Anne G. Logan, age 86 of Nevada, MO, passed away on Friday morning, October 20, 2000, at Christian Health Care in Nevada following a short illness. She was born July 25, 1914, in Columbia, MO to Lucius Franklin Childers and Frances Mabel Norman Childers. On April 14, 1935 she was married to Gay Barton and he preceded her in death in 1989. On April 26, 1997 she was married to George Logan and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2000. Ann graduated from Hickman Mills High School in Columbia, MO in 1932. Following her marriage to her husband Gay in 1935 they came to Nevada where she has lived ever since. She worked at Farm & Home Savings in Nevada for ten years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada. She was also a past president of the Nevada PTA, a Girl Scout Director, a member of the Lares Club, Past President of P.E.O., and a Red Cross Volunteer. Survivors include one son, David F. Barton of San Antonio, TX, one daughter Barbara Rawlings, Junction City, KS, one brother, Norman Childers, Gainsville, FL, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Steve Barth and Rev. Scott Hall officiating. A private committal will follow at Newton Burial Park. Junior Carl Leer

Junior Carl Donald Leer, 70, Metz, MO, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2001, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, MO, following a short illness. He was born on June 9, 1930, in Vernon County to Alfred H. Leer and Hattie Belle Boblett Leer. He was married August 25, 1956, in Nevada to Mary Burchell and she survives of Nevada. Junior was a lifelong resident of Vernon County. He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for seven years. He also worked at the Rich Hill Rendering Plant for seven years. He was involved in construction and was also employed by the Metz School and Pallet Company in Nevada until his retirement in 1993. Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia Johnson, Nevada, MO; two sons, Troy Leer, Moundville, MO, and Jimmie Leer, Bronaugh, MO; three grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by twelve brothers, three sisters, and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at Balltown Cemetery, Horton, MO, with Pastor Genevieve Guinn officiating. Edna Leeper

Edna Mae Leeper, 100, Nevada, MO passed away Saturday morning, November 11, 2000 at Moore-Few Care Center following a lengthy illness. She was born December 5, 1899 in Nevada, MO to the late George Finis Kibler and Flora Ussary Kibler. She was married May 18, 1918 in Nevada, MO to Albro C. Sheets. He passed away July 28, 1929. She later married Silas F. Leeper March 1935 in Stockton, MO. He passed away in October 1962. Edna wa a lifelong resident of Nevada. She raised four children during th Great Depression by taking in laundry in her home. She went to work at the Missouri State Hospital, Nevada, MO in 1942 and retired in 1962. She was a member of the Community Christian Church and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the WW I Veterans Auxiliary, all in Nevada, MO. Survivors include two sons, Herbert A. Sheets, Witchita, KS, Glen K. Sheets, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Joy Mynatt, Nevada, MO; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild; one brother, George F. Kibler Jr., Witchta, KS. Along with her parents and spouses, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia L. Mitchem, and two grandchildren. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at Milster Funeral Home with the reverend Wes Anderson officiating. Interment

Ruth Leavell

Ruth C. Leavell, 92, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday morning, March 2, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a short illness. She was born November 18, 1908, in Sheldon, MO, to John Tucker McCutcheon and Effie Correll McCutcheon. She married Ray Harold Leavell on October 19, 1933, in Leavenworth, KS, and he preceded her in death on August 1, 1961. Mrs. Leavell graduated from Sheldon High School in 1926. She received her Associate Arts Degree from Cottey College in 1928, Bachelor of Arts degree from Pittsburg State Teachers College, Pittsburg, KS, in 1933 as well as a Masters of Education Degree in 1964. She taught school in Liberal, rural Vernon and Barton Counties, Milo, and Nevada for a total of 34 years, retiring in 1972. She attended the United Methodist Church in Nevada. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers’ Sorority, and D.A.R. Survivors include one son, Don Leavell, Sheldon, MO; three granddaughters, Sherri Simmons, El Dorado Springs, MO, Starla Leavell, Nevada, MO, and Shelli Randall, Pittsburg, KS; three great-granddaughters, Kaili Simmons, Kinli Simmons, and McKenzi Randall; two great-grandsons, Andrew Leavell and Kaiden Simmons, and one niece, Gail Delent, Kensington, MD. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Buchanan. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2001, at the Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, MO.
