Alfred Odell Fritts, 89, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday morning, January 8, 2002, at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, MO, following a brief illness. He was born November 23, 1912, in Montrose, MO, to Jess Rite Fritts and Sarah Grace Ramalia Fritts. He married Virginia Williams in 1935 in Rich Hill, MO, and she preceded him in death in 1946. He later married Helen Darlene Gibson Fritts in 1957 in Oklahoma, and she preceded him in death in 1989. Mr. Fritts was born and raised in the Rich Hill area. He was a member of the Methodist church. He worked for many years as plant manager for the City of Harrisonville Light Department. He came back to the Nevada area in 1968 and spent the remainder of his life here. Survivors include two sons, John Fritts, Greenwood, MO, and Robert Gene Fritts, Melville, AL, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith Miller, Butler, MO, Barbara Watson, Rich Hill, MO, and Zelma Bell, Gillette, WY. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and J.R. Fritts. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rich Hill, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends Thursday 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Marshall Gehring

Marshall A. Gehring, 57, Walker, MO passed away Wednesday morning, April 23, 2003 at Freeman West Medical Center, Joplin, MO following a brief illness. He was born January 17, 1946 in Aberdeen, SD to Clifford Gehring and Josephine Redl Gehring. He was married in Las Vegas, NV to Jackie M. Bryson. Mr. Gehring moved to Walker, MO in 1995 and lived the remainder of his life there. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1970. He was a member of the Nevada Fraternal Order of Eagles #3770. He was employed as a concrete finisher for Duffy Concrete in Nevada. Survivors include His wife, Jackie M. Gehring, Walker, MO; one son, Marshall Richard Gehring, Las Vegas, NV; one daughter, Suzette Marie Gehring, Las Vegas, NV; six step-children, one grandchild and 3 step-grandchildren; one brother, Darrell Gehring, Seattle, WA; one sister, Barbara Gehring, Seattle, WA. Mr. Gehring wished to be cremated and there are no services planned at this time. Arrangements were under the direction of Milster Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Jewell D. Geiger
Died On December 12, 2001
Jewell D. Geiger, the daughter of Jewell Dean and Virgie Milligan Stevens was born May 4, 1935 in Warner, Oklahoma and died December 12, 2001 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 66 years, 7 months and 8 days. She was united in marriage to Lee Arthur Geiger on September 5, 1952 in Paola, Kansas and he preceded her in death in March 1997. She was employed as an LPN in her early years. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church. Survivors include one son, Danny Geiger of Springfield, Missouri, one daughter, Sharon Harger of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, three brothers, Parker Stevens on Texas, Claude Stevens of Virginia, Larry Stevens of Muskogee, Oklahoma, two sisters, Evelyn Lemcool of Arkansas, Alta Bell of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, three grandchildren, William Harger, Dana Tipper and James Cramer, three great grandchildren, Kalynn Snodgrass, Trentin Harger and Abrianna Harger. She was also preceded in death by one brother and her parents. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday December 17, 2001 at the First United Pentecostal Church of Nevada, Missouri with Rev. Charles Swiney officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Hwy. 54 East at Hickory, Nevada, Missouri.

Roy Gicante
Died On March 24, 2003
Roy B. Gicante,66, Nevada, MO passed away Monday, March 24, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness. He was born January 6, 1937 in Stonewall, Mississippi to John B. Gicante Sr. and Gladys Katherine Pritchett Gicante. Mr. Gicante, as a young boy lived in both MO and AR, where he worked on several farms. He moved to Kansas City, MO in 1960 and worked in the food service industry. He came to Nevada in 1991 and lived the remainder of his life here. Survivors include four brothers, John Gicante Jr., Peculiar, MO, Peter Gicante, Belton. MO, Harry Gicante Nevada, MO, Norman Gicante, Denver, CO; one sister, Mary Stump, Joplin, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kathlene Vanderwerf. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Reverend Terry Mosher officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Nevada. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday and until the time of service at Ferry Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Bonnie Jo Gintz

Bonnie Jo Gintz, 77, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday, March 21, 2003, following a lengthy illness at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center, Nevada. She was born March 9, 1926, in Springfield, MO, to Carl and Gettie Warden. She married Arnold Lewis Gintz on May 30, 1957, in Marshfield, MO, and he preceded her in death on May 8, 2000. Bonnie was born and raised in Springfield, MO. She lived in Mt. Grove and Lamar nearly all her life. She ran a day care in Lamar for 12 years. She was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lamar. Survivors include one son, Walter Gintz, Lamar, MO, two daughters, Brenda Gire, Lamar, MO, and Leslie Bogart, Sheldon, MO, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda Crane, Rogersville, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, parents; two brothers, Leland and Norman Warden, and one sister, Vivian Rogers precede her in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 2003, at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Lamar, MO, with Rev. George Haag officiating. Mary Ellen Goforth

Mary Ellen Goforth, 76, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday morning, March 2, 2003, at her home in Nevada as the result of an accidental fire in her home. She was born December 11, 1926, in Littlefield, TX, to Foree Patterson Tomlinson and Amanda Hermine Bohot Tomlinson. She was married to Milton G. Freeze and he preceded her in death in 1987. Later she married Charles H. Goforth on April 1, 1989, in Nevada, MO. He also perished in the fire in their home. Mrs. Goforth was born and raised in Texas. She came to Nevada in 1965 with her husband, Milton. She was a homemaker most of her life. Mary Ellen was a past member of the Calvary Baptist Church and the Nevada Eagles Lodge. Survivors include one son, Mike Freeze, Richards, MO; two daughters, Michelle McMinn, Delray Beach, FL; Shelly Enlow, New Jersey, four grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. In addition to her husband, Milton, she was also preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev Jim Wilson officiating. A private committal will be held at Green Lawn Cemetery, Rich Hill, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Charles Goforth

Charles Henry Goforth, 60, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday morning, March 2, 2003, at his home as the result of an accidental fire in his home. He was born January 7, 1943, in Lucerne, CO, to Harvey C. Goforth and Oleta Mary West Goforth. He married Mary Ellen Freeze on April 1, 1989, in Nevada. She also passed away March 2, 2003, as the result of the fire. Mr. Goforth grew up in the Bates County area and was a graduate of Butler High School. He lived nearly all his life in Bates and Vernon Counties. He was a member of the Nevada Eagles Lodge. Survivors include three sisters, Bernice Praiswater, Nevada, MO, Joyce Blackmore, Kansas City, KS, and Barbara Ketterman, El Dorado Springs, MO; one stepson, Mike Freeze, Richards, MO; two stepdaughters, Michelle McMinn, Delray Beach, FL, and Shelly Enlow, New Jersey, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Edward Harvey Goforth. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Henry Gordon

Henry A. Gordon, 80, Moundville, MO passed away at his residence Sunday evening, May 5, 2002. He was born March 24, 1922 in Sheldon, MO to the late Oscar Gordon and Clara Maude Stolz Gordon. He was married July 31, 1948 in Bronaugh, MO to Glenna Bley Gordon who survives of the home. Mr. Gordon was raised in Vernon County, MO and spent virtually his entire life here. He graduated from Bronaugh High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II serving in the Pacific Theater of War. After the war he returned to Vernon County where he made a living in heavy construction. He was a member of the Community Christian Church, Nevada, MO. Along with his wife, Glenna, Survivors include two sons, Monty Gordon, Moundville, MO, Rusty Gordon, Ft. Scott, KS; two daughters, Pam Kindred, Kempton, PA, Leah Carter, Ft, Scott, KS; seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Galon, Donald, Bob and Mark Gordon and two sisters, Faye and Carol Gordon. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Community Christian Church in Nevada with Reverend Wes Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Welborn Cemetery, Moundville, MO. Friends may call from now and until the 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Carl Grabowski
Died On October 8, 2002
Carl Grabowski, the son of Carl and Pearl Balke Grabowski was born April 7, 1911 in Chicago, Illinois and died October 8, 2002 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 1 day. Mr. Grabowski was united in marriage to the former Olga Govedarica in 1936 in Chicago, Illinois and she preceded him in death in 1981. He was an employee of the American Woodcarving Company in Chicago from 1940 to 1953. He was then employed by W.J. Sheppard and Company in Chicago until his retirement in 1965. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Sahagian of Naperville, Illinois, Denise Walker of Nevada, Missouri, three sons, Carl Grabowski of Bensenville, Illinois, Gary Graboski also of Bensenville, Dennis Grabowski of Addison, Illinois, five grandchildren, Russell, Billy, Jeff, Tammy and Dale, and two great grandchildren, Carly and Billy. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Dempsey and one sister, Katy. Private interment will be in Chicago. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Mildred Greenlee
Died On January 31, 2002
Mildred Addie Greenlee, 99, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, January 31, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center following a lengthy illness. She was born November 12, 1902, to Mr. and Mrs. Adam Shields. She was married to Lyle Lyndon Greenlee on June 21, 1923, in Horton, MO, and he preceded her in death on August 12, 1986. Mrs. Greenlee was raised in Vernon County and spent the majority of her life here. She was a member of the Horton Methodist Church. She was a homemaker, but also sold Avon for many years. Survivors include one son, David Greenlee, Nevada, MO, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Ralph Erwin Greenlee; four brothers, Orby, Chester, Jim, and Leroy Shields, and two sisters, Leota Compton and Letha Shields. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Lela Mae Gustafson

Lela Mae Gustafson, 78, Sheldon, MO, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2003, at her home in Sheldon following a lengthy illness. She was born June 6, 1924, in Elora, AL, to Herman Smith and Mary Mason Smith. She married Edward Gustafson on November 10, 1956, in Harvey, IL, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Gustafson was born in Alabama and spent the majority of her life in Alabama. She came to Sheldon three years ago and has resided there since. Survivors in addition to her husband, Edward, include one son, Donald Gustafson, Steger, IL; two daughters, Diana Brzuchowski, Crete, IL, and Melody Rea, Oregon City, OR, nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Margaret Wooley, Wake Village, TX. She was preceded in death by one child. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO, with Elvin Winans, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery. Lavon Hackett
Died On February 2, 2003
Lavon M. Hackett, 85, formerly of Nevada passed away at the Appleton City Nursing Home in Appleton City, MO following a short illness. He was born on October 3, 1917 in Iola, KS to Thomas John Hackett and Laura Snyder Hackett. On November 13, 1936 he was married in Independence, MO to Hazel J. King and she survives in Appelton City. Lavon came with his family to Nevada from Ft. Scott in 1931. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1935. He served in the USS Navy during WWII. Lavon farmed most of his working life on his farm near Nevada until his retirement in 1993. He has lived in Appleton City for the past year and a half. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Nevada. In addition to his wife Hazel, he is survived by one son, Gary Hackett and his wife Edna of Appleton City, two granddaughters, Carolyn Bishop of Eldorado Springs and Lorrie Hackett of Clinton, MO, one grandson Tom Hackett of Nevada, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Leona Houk. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Dr. Eldon Shaw, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the Moore Cemetery, Nevada. Those who wish may contribute to the Moore Cemetery Association or the First Christian Church in his memory.

Willa Sutcliffe Hallam

Willa Mabel Sutcliffe Hallam, 88, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO, following a brief illness. She was born April 17, 1914, in Deerfield, MO, to Charles David Soward and Josie Belle Grant Soward. She was married to Milo Sutcliffe on February 2, 1933, in Ft. Scott, KS, and he preceded her in death on May 11, 1978. She was later married to Clarence Hallam on August 12, 1983, in Nevada, MO, and he preceded her in death on January 24, 1995. Willa was born and raised in the Deerfield area. She worked for many years as an LPN in various towns in Kansas and Colorado. Later she served as a nursing home administrator in Harrisonville, MO. She returned to Nevada in 1980 and worked for a time at Nevada Manor, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Community Christian Church, Nevada, MO. She was an avid seamstress. Survivors include three sons, Milo Sutcliffe, Joplin, MO, Donald Sutcliffe, Freeman, MO, and Robert Sutcliffe, Richland, MO; four daughters, Sarah Alexander and Margaret Anderson, both of Nevada, MO, Dorothy Brown, Niangua, MO, and Izeta Person, Deerfield, MO, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Ross Sutcliffe, and three grandchildren, Mark D. Sutcliffe, Joella W. Strecker, and Kimberly Ann Ferieancek. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Wes Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO. Marlyn Lee Hanson, 72, Nevada, MO passed away Thursday evening, February 28, 2002 at Christian Health Care Center, Nevada, MO following a lengthy illness. He was born February 4, 1930 in Whiteside County, IL to the late Harry F. Hanson Jr. and Viola Belle Huggins Hanson. He was married December 23, 1951 in Abingdon, IL to Mary Ann Krohn Hanson who survives of the home. Mr. Hanson was born and raised in Illinois. He was a member of the Methodist church. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in ceramic engineering. While in Illinois he worked for Abingdon Pottery and Peerless Pottery Companies. He moved to Nevada in 1973 and worked for Crane Plumbing in Nevada as Plant Manager until his retirement in 1995. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a former member of the Nevada Regional Medical Center Board of Directors. He had once been named Nevada's Boss of the Year. Along with his wife, Mary Ann, survivors include, two sons, Alan Hanson, Rochester Mills, PA, Mathew Todd Hanson, Centralia IL, two daughters, Pamela Cox, Lynnville, IN, Penny Austin, Nevada, MO, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, Dianne Henzen, Clinton, IA. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Dr. William Cox officiating. Interment will follow at Click Cemetery in Nevada. Barry Lee Harnden, 55, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon March 5, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following an illness of several months. He was born February 15, 1947, in Wichita, KS, to Donald Allen Harnden and Dorothy Inis Halsey Harnden. He married Cassie J. Bush on December 24, 1971, in Wichita, KS, and she survives of the home. Mr. Harnden was born and raised in Wichita, KS. He served in the Navy 1964 to 1967 during the Viet Nam Conflict. He served on the U.S.S. Sutherland and the U.S.S. Agerholm. He then served in the Naval Reserve until 1970. He has worked for Hammersley Trucking for the past 12 years. Survivors in addition to his wife Cassie, include two sons, Michael K. Harnden, Wichita, KS, and Royce A. Harnden, Wichita, KS; one daughter, Shanda L. Harnden, Wichita, KS; two granddaughters; mother, Dorothy Harnden, Wichita, KS; one brother, Dennis Harnden, Somerset, PA; one sister, Lana Barkman, Evansville, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial services will be held at West Side Christian Church, Wichita, KS, on Monday, March 11, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. with committal services in Attica Cemetery, Attica, KS. James Harper

James L. Harper, age 54 of Webb City, MO died on Friday, September 27, 2002 at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin following a sudden illness. He was born on October 4, 1947 in Nevada, MO to Herschel Woodrow Harper and Mary Katherine Gibson Harper. James grew up in Nevada and attended Nevada High School. He served in the United States Navy for 3 years as a Sea-Bee. He spent his whole working life as a truck driver. He was currently employed by Sitton Truck Line of Joplin, MO. He is survived by one son, Dyon Harper of Holden, MO, two daughters, Raquel Harper of Fresno, CA, and Lisa M. Harper, three grandchildren, two brothers, Thomas E. Harper, Kansas City, MO and Richard R. Harper of Moriarty, NM, four sisters, Paula Ricker, Omaha, NE, Kathleen Ellifritz, Springfield, MO, Carolyn Sue Rutledge, Kansas City, MO, and Beverly Rodelander, Duenweg, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Aaron Harper in 1998. Funeral Services will held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2002 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Esther Belle Harper, 90, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Shannon Medical Center, San Angelo, TX. She was born March 27, 1912, in Topeka, KS, to William J. Dealy and Almira Hill Dealy. She was married to Virgil L. Harper on March 27, 1937, in Topeka, KS, and he preceded her in death in 1970. Esther was a graduate of Topeka High School in Topeka, KS. She came to Nevada with her husband in 1947. Esther was a homemaker. Her memberships included the Community Christian Church, Nevada, the Rebekah Lodge since 1957 of which she was District Assembly President and past District Deputy President, and a Red Cross Volunteer. In 1992, she moved to Texas to live near her daughter. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Gonterman and her husband, Louie, San Angelo, TX, and Susan Adams and husband, Jack, Olathe, KS; five grandchildren, Debbie Gonterman Epley, Burleson, TX, Mark Gonterman, San Angelo, TX, and Kim Gonterman Key, Ft. She was preceded in death by one son, Larry V. Harper in October 6, 1978, and one grandson, Travis Harper in June 26, 1990. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Dr. Eldon Shaw, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO.

Robert W. 'Bob' Harris, 46, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born April 27, 1956, in Nevada, MO, to Frank A. Harris and Betty Sue Byrnes Harris. Bob was born and raised in Nevada. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1974 and attended college in Kansas City, MO. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Aurora, MO. All of his working life was spent in medical technician work for various hospitals in Missouri. Survivors include his father, Frank Harris, of the home; one brother, Mike Harris, Blue Springs, MO; uncle, Bill Byrnes; aunt, Ada Bell; and one niece, Ashley Harris, all of Nevada, MO. Other survivors include three uncles, Ernest Harris, El Dorado Springs, MO, Carl Harris, Thurman, IA, and Paul Harris, Albuquerque, NM; one aunt Lorene Davis, El Dorado Springs, MO; and numerous cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Sue, in 2000; maternal grandmother, Margaret Byrnes; and paternal grandmother, Lydia Harris. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Dr. William Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 7:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church Building Fund in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
