Frances Hogsett

Frances Hogsett, 94, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2003, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO. She was born July 9, 1908, near Montrose, MO, in Henry County, to John A. Williams and Amiasetia Dixon Williams. Frances was a member of the Baptist church and has resided in the Nevada area since 1921. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer at the Nevada City Hospital, served as election judge and supervisor for many years, and volunteered at other civic organizations following her retirement form the Nevada State Hospital. Ms. Hogsett was employed in the grocery business for more than 25 years and served as a psychiatric aide at the Nevada State Hospital for 11 years before her retirement in 1973. She traveled extensively during her early retirement years and was proud of attaining her goal of visiting all 50 states as well as Canada and Mexico. Frances talked extensively about her fond memories of visiting relatives in Appleton City and Montrose, MO, and maintained close contact with her family and many friends in the Nevada area. Survivors include cousins, Gordon and Connie Dunlap, Prairie Village, KS, Jay Dunlap, Montrose, MO, Sue Iman, Blue Springs, MO, Mary Nichols, Nevada, MO, Opal Myers, Clinton, MO, and Donna Heumann, Mesquite, TX. She was preceded in death by her son, Doyle L. Hogsett, and one sister, Doris Peabody. Harry Holcomb

Harry B. Holcomb, 82, Moundville, MO, passed away Monday evening, September 16, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born December 19, 1919, in Nevada, MO, to John Holcomb and Carrie Winnerstine Holcomb. Harry was born in Nevada. He went to school in Iola, KS. He served in the Army for a time. Following the service, Harry worked for a time in Kansas City before returning to Nevada. He was a custodian for Nevada High School for a number of years, retiring from the high school in 1982. Mr. Holcomb also farmed in Vernon County most of his life. Survivors include one sister, Nada Grosshans, Longbeach, CA; three nephews, Bob Koch, CA, Tom and Jerry Holcomb, both of Nevada, MO; and one niece, Betty Neff, CA. He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Holcomb. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 .m. on Thursday, September 19, 2002, at Antioch Cemetery, Vernon County, MO, with Rev. Jaunita Hollandsworth

Jaunita F. Hollandsworth, 77 Nevada, MO passed away Saturday afternoon, May 11, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO following a lengthy illness. She was born August 23, 1924 in Stockton, MO to the late Jesse C. Anderson and Ida Evalena McClure Anderson. She was married December 5, 1943 in Stockton, MO to Ray Braxton Hollandsworth. He preceded her in death August 12, 1980. Ms. Hollandsworth spent most of her life in Cedar and Vernon County, MO. She worked at Key Work Cloths in Nevada for 27 years until her health with Arthritis forced her to retire. She was a Christian all of her life and had great faith in God. She placed her fellowship with the Evangelistic Center Church in Nevada until her health prevented her from attending the last several years. Survivors include two daughter, Betty Ginther and husband Garland, Fulton, KS, Dixie LeeMasters, Nevada, MO; four grandchildren, Christina Douglas, Mike White and wife Loree, all of Prescott, KS, Kyle LeeMasters and wife Rebecca, Nevada, MO, Fred Ginther and wife Trisha., Lee's Summit, MO; Nine great-grandchildren, Jacob, Clint, Sonny, Nichole, Ian, Alek, Quentin, Bryon and Stefani. Along with her parents and spouse, one sister Edna Trent preceded her in death. Della Holman

Della F. Holman, age 52, Nevada, MO passed away Friday evening, February 14, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born on March 5, 1950, in Nevada, to Henry Kenneth Smith and Hazel Irene Miler Smith. She was married to William R. Holman on November 26, 1981, in Springdale, Arkansas, and he survives of the home in Nevada. Della was a life long resident of Nevada. She worked at Nevada State Hospital eleven years, retiring in 1981. Survivors in addition to her husband William, include two sons, Thomas Earl Smith, of Manchester, KY and Rex Lee Holman, of Nevada, one daughter, Viola Holman, Nevada, eight grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Abner Smith, Compton Junction, and William Kenneth Smith, Nevada, four sisters, Patricia Robb, Nevada, Marilyn Spencer, Bronaugh, Peggy Lee Peterson, Topeka, KS, and Jacqueline Barrows, Blackwell, OK. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Herbert Howell

Herbert Raymond 'Herb' Howell, died February 29, 2002 in Portland, OR. He was born on March 6, 1916, in Nevada, MO, to Hamilton Howell and Hallie Virginia Haas Howell. Herb's family was 'dirt poor', and in his Sophomore year he quit school to help support his family. They moved to Chicago, where Herb finished trade school. He first worked as a private secretary, and then entered the Armed Services during World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Chemical Warfare Service from 1941-1945. He attained the rank of Warrant Officer. During his professional career, Herb worked with insurances, moving to Seattle, and then moving to Portland where he worked for NW Insurance Company. After retiring, he served as an insurance consultant for the State of Oregon until the age of 80. He then devoted a great deal of time in oil and watercolor painting that he had not done for about 40 years. Herb was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church since he joined in 1975, and also held membership in Rotary International. Survivors include his longtime companion John Rushong; his sister Velma Scott, Lawrenceville, GA; one nephew, one niece, and caregiver, David Behrend. Committal services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO, with Pastor Kim Lekas officiating under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.
Mary Lou "Jadlot" Hudson

Mary Lou "Jadlot" Hudson, the daughter of George L. and Theda Bivins VanDyke, was born May 26, 1936 in Topeka, Kansas and died February 16, 2002 at McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Loren Hudson and he preceded her in death in December 1998. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, Jim Jadlot of Blacklick, Ohio, Roy "Chip" Jadlot of Nevada, Missouri, two daughters, Jeannie Shore of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Alberta DeWitt of Burden, Kansas, one sister, Linda Lolly of Debois, Wyoming, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday February 21, 2002 at Moore Cemetery with John Nichols officiating. Mildred M. Hughes, 89, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003, at Christian Health Care in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born March 12, 1913, in Rockville, MO, to George L. Bain and Margaret E. Merchant Bain. Mildred grew up in Rockville. She attended Rockville Elementary and Rockville High Schools. She worked as a seamstress in a tailor shop in Denver, CO, where she lived and worked most of her life. She was baptized in the Denver South Seventh Day Adventist Church in Denver, CO, in 1980. Mildred came to Nevada in 1991 where she has lived ever since. Survivors include one son, Dean Shultz, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Betty Gericke, Belton, MO, nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Glen Bain, Belton, MO, Jim and Don Bain, both of Rockville, MO, and one sister, Martha Strang, Auburn, CA. She was preceded in death by one son, Bob Shultz; one brother, Warren Bain, and one sister, Lorene Bain Lodike. Otha V. Hyder, 79, Nevada, MO passed away Thursday morning, February 20, 2003 at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born October 26, 1923 in Stockton, MO to Clarence A. Hyder and Sadie Elizabeth McClure Hyder. Mr. Hyder was raised in Stockton, MO. He spent some time in the state of California as a young man, but lived the majority of his adult life in the Nevada area. He worked at a variety of jobs dealing with farming. Survivors include one brother, Athel Hyder, Nevada, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Virgil Hyder and one sister, Thelma Hanson. Nadine Jadlot

Nadine Jadlot, the daughter of William B. and Sylvia I. Garland Glendening, was born April 15, 1928 in St. Clair County, Missouri and died April 18, 2002 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 74. Mrs. Jadlot was a graduate of Nevada High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to Walter S. Jadlot on July 16, 1950 in Nevada, Missouri and he preceded her in death in 1975. She had been employed as a secretary at the former Nevada State Hospital until her retirement in 1990. Mrs. Jadlot enjoyed making crafts and crocheting. Survivors include one daughter, Janet Zoglmann and her husband, John, of Milo, Missouri, one sister, Louise Scott and her husband, Scotty, of Nevada, Missouri, three grandchildren, Jackie Zoglmann, Jeremy Zoglmann and his wife, Mindy and Justin Zoglmann, three great grandchildren, Taylor Zoglmann, Weston Zoglmann and Kaitlyn Zoglmann Jenkins, two nieces, Debbie Bredlinger and her husband, Jerry, of Milo, Missouri and Marsha Ann Janes of El Dorado Springs, Missouri. Numerous aunts and cousins also survive. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one nephew, Wayne Scott. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Moore Cemetery with Pastor Mike Hutchens officiating. Friends may call at Evergreen Memorial Chapel from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday. Leonard "Bunker" Jester

Leonard C. 'Bunker' Jester, 74, Milo, MO, passed away Wednesday evening, July 10, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born September 8, 1927, in Dierks, AR, to John A. Jester and Pearl Jewell Jester. He married Ethel Compton on June 5, 1966, in Walker, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Jester came to Milo in 1965 with his family from Kansas City, MO, and has lived there ever since. He served in the Army following WW II. He was with the railway division in Japan. He spent most of his working life farming in the Milo area, retiring in 1990. In addition to his wife Ethel, survivors include one son, Donald Jester, of the home; four daughters, Teresa Womack, Bonner Springs, KS, Elizabeth Fahnestock and Amelia Caviness, both of Milo, MO, and Jurea Jester, of the home; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one brother, Billy Jester, Kansas City, MO; three sisters, Maezel Brown, Miami, FL, Dorothy Jean Boughman, Milo, and Betty Jo Sinski, Angleton, TX. . Gladys Mae Johnson, 89, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born September 11, 1913, in Walker, MO, to John Gilbert Willson and Ada Mae Langford Willson. She married Charles H. Johnson on September 9, 1940, in Kansas City, MO. He preceded her in death in August 1975. Mrs. Johnson grew up in Nevada and attended Stanton School in Walker, MO. She lived in Kansas City for 40 years and came back to Nevada in 1978. She was a volunteer for Nevada City Hospital Women's Auxiliary, a member of the United Methodist Church, and the Helping Hands Goodwill Sunday School Class of the church. She worked as a hotel waitress all her working life. Survivors include one sister, Thelma Story Boyd, Nevada, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, R. L. Evelyn Vivian Johnson, 69, Nevada, MO, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born December 25, 1933 in Moundville, MO to Brooks Koster Johnson and Elizabeth Gulliford Johnson. Evelyn grew up in Moundville attending school there, and graduated from Bronaugh High School in 1951. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Human Relations/Youth Agency Administration from Missouri Valley College, in Marshall, MO and a Master of Science Degree in sociology from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN. Her employment included Dean of Students, Cottey College, Nevada; Associate Professor at Salem College, Salem, WV; Associate Director Admissions, Missouri Valley College, Marshall, MO; Executive Director, Four Winds Council of Girl Scouts, Augusta, KS; Executive Director, Sunflower Council Campfire Girls, K.C. KS.; Executive Director, Nevada Vernon County Chamber of Commerce 1983-1989, Nevada, MO; Career Center Specialist/Claims, Lincoln National Insurance Co., Ft. Scott, KS, and retired from Ft. Scott Community College in 1998. She was a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church where she taught Sunday School. She was secretary of the Nevada Griffon Baseball Team Board. She also served on the University Extension Council and the Boy Scouts of America National Council. She received the 'Service Is Golden' award for outstanding service to fellow workers at Lincoln National Insurance; William Spurgeon Award for outstanding service to the Explorer program of Boy Scouts of America and Who's Who Among Students of American Colleges and Universities as an undergraduate. She is survived by one brother, John S. Johnson, Kansas City, MO; sister-in-law, Ramona Johnson, Rockwall, TX, nieces, Stephanie Hughes, Kim Vyers, Judy Anders, Carole Clark, Candice Lynch; nephews, Rick Johnson, John Elton Johnson, C. G. Johnson, Clifford Johnson, and Curtis Johnson; and cousins, Ronda, Jeff, and J. L. Post, all of Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James L. and Clinton G. James R. Johnson

James R. Johnson, 64, Sheldon, MO, passed away Thursday night, February 7, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born March 30, 1937, in Vermillion, SD, to Edwin Earhart Johnson and Ova Mary Case Johnson. He married Donna Mae Chamberlain in 1955, in Vermillion, SD, and later married Barbara Jean Watters on March 17, 1989, in Miami, OK, and she survives of the home. Mr. Johnson was born and raised in Vermillion, SD. He graduated from Meckling High School in Meckling, SD, in 1955. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He worked for many years as a self-employed trash hauler. He later was a truck driver as well as a barbecue wood hauler. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He came to Vernon County in 1989 and spent the remainder of his life here. Survivors in addition to his wife, Barbara, include two sons, Marty Johnson, Meckling, SD, and Dan Watters, Pontiac, MI; five daughters, Cindy Johnson, Nevada, MO, Cheri Belleweg, Vermillion, SD, Theresa Jarrell, Nevada, MO, Judy Reppehagen, Fowlerville, MI, and Amy Watters, Nevada, MO; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandson, one brother, Garry Johnson, Canton, SD, and his mother, Ova Mary Johnson, Vermillion, SD. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Cory Dean Burrell. John Johnson

John Will Johnson, 95, Horton, MO, passed away Sunday morning, September 15, 2002, at his home in Horton. He was born September 5, 1907, in Nevada, MO, to Frank F. Johnson and Leatha Olive DeAtley Johnson. He married Hazel Louise Burgoon on October 16, 1938, in Tulsa, OK. She preceded him in death on September 20, 1999. Mr. John was born and raised in Vernon County and spent virtually his entire life here. He was a member and elder of the Rinehart Christian Church, Richards, MO. He made his living as a farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Metz School Board for more than thirty years and served as treasurer for much of that time. He was an avid bowler and continued to bowl into his 90's. Survivors include one son, Gary Johnson, Horton, MO; one daughter, Karen Hendrix, St. Louis, MO, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Hazel, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Thelma Marie Johnson, 79, Nevada, MO passed away Monday morning, October 21, 2002 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born January 30, 1923, on a farm near Moundville, MO to the late Ralph Waldo Campbell and Bertha Clay Davis Campbell. She was married August 26, 1945 in Ft. Scott, KS to Darrell Walter Johnson. He preceded her in death June 20, 1998. Mrs. Johnson was raised in the Moundville and Bronaugh area. She was a 1942 graduate of Bronaugh High School and attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, MO. She taught school for three years. She resided in the Deerfield and Ft. Scott areas before moving to Nevada in 1950. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Nevada, but had attended the Church of the Nazarene in Nevada for many years. Survivors include one daughter, Virginia M. Kroening, Saratoga, CA; two sons, Robert R. Johnson, Fulton, MO, and Richard D. Johnson, Nevada, MO; two grandchildren, Kristin B. Harper and Justin A. Johnson, both of El Dorado Springs, MO; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn L. Johnson, Hunter D. Harper, Justin T. Johnson, Haden D. Harper and Shaeffer B. Johnson, all of El Dorado Springs, MO; five step-grandchildren, 15 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sister, Grace V. Palmer and Marjorie B. Coughlin, and three brothers, Ralph W. Campbell Jr., Elwood R. Campbell and Melvin G. Campbell. Bobby Gene Johnson, Sr. 71, Harwood, MO, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 7, 1932, in Oak Grove, MO, to Wiley Teal Johnson and Edna Mae Davis Johnson. He was married April 24, 1959, in Nevada, MO, to Barbara Jean Phillips. Mr. Johnson was born and raised in Oak Grove, MO. In 1950 he graduated from Levasy High School in Oak Grove. He came to Vernon County in 1973 and lived the remainder of his life here. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Garton Farms, Moundville, MO, for 18 years. He also was a welder. Kenneth L. Jones, 88, Deerfield, MO, passed away Thursday morning, March 21, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada. He was born February 1, 1914, in Muscatine, IA, to Fred Jones and Elma Hilton Jones. He married Thelma Brandt on April 24, 1954, in Kansas City, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Jones graduated from East High School in Kansas City, MO, in 1932. He was a U.S. Postal worker for 30 years in Kansas City and moved to Deerfield, MO, in 1980, where he has spent the remainder of his lifetime. He was a member of the Church of God Holiness, Deerfield, MO. Survivors in addition to his wife Thelma, include one son, Robert L. Jones, Independence, MO, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald R. Jones. Committal services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at Ft. Scott National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS, with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Friends may call now and until 1:00 p.m. Monday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Those who wish may contribute to the Church of God Holiness in his memory.
