Verland Eugene 'Gene' Judd, age 55 of Nevada, passed away , Friday, May 24, 2002 at the Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born on April 27, 1947 in Hiatville, KS to Kenneth L. and Elizabeth Heckman Judd. On October 14, 1969 he was married in Kimble, NE to Shirley Jean Batson and she survives of the home in Nevada. Gene grew up in Redfield, KS and graduated from high school in Ft. Scott in 1965. He worked for Extrusions, Inc. in Ft. Scott for 23 years. He came to Nevada in 1987. He was a foreman at Quality Products in Nevada for four years until illness forced his retirement in 1999. Gene was a member of the Countryside Assembly of God Church in Nevada and the Nevada Eagles Lodge. In addition to his wife Shirley, he is survived by one daughter, Michelle R. Adams of Ft. Scott, KS, one son, Michael Eugene Judd of Kansas City, MO, his mother, Elizabeth Judd, Redfield, KS, two brothers, Kenneth Judd of Viola, KS and Gary Judd of Redfield, KS, three sisters, Sharon Judd of Redfield, KS, Patricia Heckman of Bronson, KS, and Lavon Kent of Ft. Scott, KS, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth and one sister, Linda Hutchison. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at the Countryside Assembly of God Church in Nevada under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home. Rev. Ted Furry will officiate. Martin Monroe 'Mutt' Karr, 86, formerly of Sheldon, MO, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at Osage Care Center, Osage Beach, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 9, 1916 in California, MO, to Martin Monroe Karr, Sr. and Winnie Elizabeth Bilyeu Karr. He married Anna Louise Chadd on April 5, 1941 in Miami, OK, and she survives of the home. Mr. Karr was a farmer most of his career, residing near Sheldon, MO. In recent years Monroe and Louise enjoyed retirement at the Lake of the Ozarks, Osage Beach, MO area. Monroe was a member of the Dunnegan Grove Christian Church near Sheldon. He is survived by his wife, Anna Louise Karr of the home; one son, Martin Glenn Karr and his wife Betty Jean, Osage Beach, MO; one daughter, Connie Jolene Parker and her husband Frank, Mountain Home, AR; three grandchildren, Kerry Karr, Denise Ladyman, and Kevin Parker; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Emmett Karr, Whittier, CA; five sisters, Mary Hoodenpyle, Vinita, OK, Erma Van Every, Nevada, MO, Freda Van Every, Miami, OK, Alice Potts, Denver, CO, and Frances Chedshire, Ocean Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert Lawrence, Donald Lee, and Cecil Eugene; one sister, Anna Ruth, and one great-granddaughter, Erin Nicole Karr. Wilma V. Kash

Wilma V. Kash, the daughter of Zachary L. and Grace Barnes Childers was born April 11, 1915 in Weleetka, Oklahoma and died February 2, 2003 at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 21 days. She was united in marriage to Jesse Jones in 1934 and then married Leslie W. Robertson in 1941. For many years, Mrs. Kash was employed as a clerk at the Katz Drug Store in Kansas City, Missouri. She was also a seamstress. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Larry Robertson, Sr. and his wife, Teresa of Nevada, Missouri, a daughter, Kathryn McGhie and her husband, Dick of Willow Springs, Illinois, a brother, Chester Maloy of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and a sister, Leota Whitman of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Mrs. Kash was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a brother, Lloyd Childers, two sisters, Zampa Hancock and Wanda Childers and three grandchildren, Samantha Meagan Robertson, Janie Friedlie and Tracy Lynn Robertson Hutchinson. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2003 at Moore Cemetery with Mr. John Nichols officiating. George Keithley

George Blaine Keithley, 56, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2003, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, MO. He was born October 27, 1946, in Branson, MO, to Robert Eugene Keithley and Sheila Emma Josephine Cummings Keithley. George was born and raised in Taney County, MO. He came to Nevada in 1969 where he has lived ever since. For all of his working life, he was involved in the amusement business. Survivors include one brother, Neal Eugene Keithley, Fairland, OK; one sister, Ella Keithley, Nevada, MO, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Jack Keithley officiating. Judge H.A. Kelso
Died On August 11, 2004
Judge H.A. Kelso, the son of John W. and Mariam Belle Hereford, was born September 6, 1911 in Alma, Nebraska and passed away Wednesday August 11, 2004 at 1:40 p.m. at the K.U. Medical Center at age 92. He attended SMSU, then known as Springfield Teacher's College and the University of Colorado in Boulder. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1937 with a Doctor of Juris Prudence Degree. He returned to Nevada and was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Vernon County in 1938. He served in WWII in the U.S. Army as Tech Sergeant with the Judge Advocate's Office. Judge Kelso was united in marriage to the former Doradee Steward on September 20, 1940. In 1948 he was elected Probate/Magistrate Judge and Acting Juvenile Judge. In 1960, Governor John Dalton appointed Judge Kelso to the bench as Judge of the 28th Judicial Circuit. He was also an Honorary Colonel on Governor John Dalton's staff. He served as Judge of the 28th Judicial Circuit until retirement in 1976. In retirement he served as a Senior Judge with the Ethics Commission. Judge Kelso served in many leadership roles in the community and in his church. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nevada and especially loved the years he spent teaching his Sunday School class. He was also a member of Ducks Unlimited, Vernon County Bar Association, and the Missouri Bar Association. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts, a charter member of the Nevada Jaycee's, and was on the steering committee for the Nevada Centennial celebration. He was an avid farmer, pecan grower, hunter and fisherman. He was a dedicated conservationist and voted Farmer-Sportsman of the Year in 1966. Judge Kelso was a man of integrity with a great capacity for love and walked humbly with his Lord. He is survived by his wife, Doradee, of the home, three daughters, Maridee Kelso Devore and her husband, Earl, of Ottawa, Kansas, Constance Kelso Beaver and her husband, Robert, of Nevada, Missouri, and Sylvia Kelso Tucker and her husband, Laurence, of Liberty, Missouri. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Memorial services for Judge Kelso will be Sunday August 15, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the United Methodist Church or the H.A. and Doradee Kelso Scholarship Fund at Nevada High School. Service arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
Robert Kemper

Robert Lynn Kemper, 75, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2002, at his home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born Mary 20, 1927, in Newton, KS, to Jesse Bolton Kemper and Agnes Mae McDougal Kemper. He married Noreta P. Bittner, on December 24, 1967, in Nevada, MO, and she survives of the home. Bob served in the U.S. Navy. He was a Deacon of the Calvary Baptist and Pine Street Baptist Churches, Nevada. He was the bus ministry director for Calvary Baptist for 20 years and for Pine Street Baptist for five years. He was Royal Ambassador Leader (mission organization for boys) for Calvary Baptist for several years. He also served for many years at church camps. Survivors in addition to his wife Noreta, include one daughter, Julie Anne Kemper, Nevada, MO, and one sister, Janet Koch, Olathe, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jack, and his wife, Jane. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Reverends John Nichols and Lon Brown officiating. Interment

Viola Kennedy

Viola Jessie Kennedy, age 83 of Nevada, passed away on Friday January 10, 2003 at the Barone Alzheimer's Care Unit in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born on May 15, 1919 in San Benito, Texas to Louis Scholle and Jessie Noble Scholle. On March 16, 1941 she was married to John Lewis Kennedy and he preceded her in death on May 31, 1984. Viola came to Vernon County at the age of 14 and has lived nearly all of her life in Vernon County. Viola worked at both the El Dorado Springs R-2 School System and Cottey College in Nevada for many years. She also worked at Camp Gallilee in El Dorado Springs during the summer for a number of years. She was a longtime member of the Montevallo Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Sheldon Order of the Easter Star Chapter #245 where she was Past-Matron and a 50 year member. She was also a Charter member of the Montevallo Jolly Homemakers Club. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ellen Hobbs of Hertford, NC and Florence Hedges of Nevada, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three brothers Royce Scholle of Eldridge, MO, Kenny Scholle of Smithville, MO, and Norval Scholle of Carrolton, MO, and two sisters, Bernadine Cozads of Buffalo, MO and Sharon Morse, Grain valley, MO. In addition to her husband John Lewis Kennedy, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son Lewis Kenneth Kennedy in 1969 and one brother, Louis Scholle Jr.. James M. Kenny Sr. 71, Nevada, MO, formerly of Oyster Bay, NY passed away Saturday, May 3, 2003 at his residence in Nevada. He was born December 4, 1931 in Glen Cove, NY to the late John Kenny and Mary Duffy Kenny. Mr. Kenny was a lifelong Catholic. He graduated from Oyster Bay High School, Oyster Bay NY. He was a fifty-year member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Oyster Bay Fire Company #1 since 1953. He moved to Nevada in October of 2000 and lived the remainder of his life here. Survivors include one son, James Kenny Jr. Harwood, MO; one daughter, Sharon Kenny-Didden, Nevada, MO; five grandchildren; four brothers, John Kenny, Oroville, CA, Martin Kenny, Rockford, IL, Christopher Kenny, Floral Park, NY, Michael Kenny, Palm Beach, Fl; one sister MaryEllen Leveling, Oneonta, NY. Lenore Kerr, the daughter of William and Allie Hollingsworth Stacy, was born October 8, 1920 in Cass County, Iowa and died September 12, 2002 at the Barone Alzheimer Care Center in Nevada, Missouri at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 4 days. She was a graduate of Bridgewater High School in Bridgewater, Iowa in 1938. She was united in marriage to Harley T. Kerr on December 8, 1944 in Greenfield, Iowa and he preceded her in death April 30, 1978. She was a homemaker. She was also a member of the Bridgewater Christian Church. Survivors include two nephews, Paul Stacy of Littleton, Colorado and Tim Stacy of Nevada, Missouri, one niece, Ann Munsterman of Arvada, Colorado and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Elbert "Ned" Stacy and Delmar Stacy. Graveside services will be Monday September 16, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. at the Massena Center Cemetery, Massena, Iowa with Rev. David Clark officiating. Roy Kirby, age 89, of Nevada passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born on May 23, 1912, in Mammoth Springs Arkansas, to Ewing and Alice Owens Kirby. He was married to Rosalee Rutherford on March 29, 1948, in Fort Scott, KS, and she survives of the home. Roy grew up in Arkansas. He served in the Army during WWII in the infantry. During his service, he was a P.O.W. in Germany for three years. Roy worked as a painter nearly all his life. He and Rosalee came to Nevada from Denver, CO in 1980 where he has spent the remainder of his life. Survivors in addition to his wife Rosalee, include three sons, James Kirby, Denver, CO, Robert Kirby, Plano, TX, and Ronald Kirby, Hepler, KS; one daughter, Linda Hoeschen, Denver, CO; one stepdaughter, Betty Wheeler, Denver, CO, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Val Kirby, Strawberry, AR, John Kirby, Austin, TX, Odell Kirby, Nevada, and two sisters, Dorothy Warren, and Charlotte Earnest, both of Nevada. Christopher G. Kish, 82, Caplinger Mills, MO, passed away Thursday morning, August 22, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following an illness of several months. He was born January 21, 1920, in Fairfax, MO, to Herbert Austin Kish and Marguerite Colhour Kish. He married Marvel Caroline Welborn on July 12, 1950, in Rochester, MN, and she survives of the home. Mr. Kish grew up in Mason City, IA, and attended school in Mason City. He served in the Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre of War. He was injured during the war and returned home, a disabled veteran. Following the war, he lived most of his life in Missouri, including Milo, MO. Survivors in addition to his wife, Marvel, include six sons, Jimmy and Robert Kish, both of the home, Tommy Kish, Jonesboro, AR, Ronnie, David, and Gene Kish, all of N. Wilkesboro, NC; four daughters, Mary Kish, of Greece, Betty and Linda Kish, both of N. Wilkesboro, NC, and Brenda Kish, Little Rock, AR; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. One brother and one son preceded him in death. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2002, at Newton Burial Park. Monty W. Koehn, 42, Walker, MO, passed away Tuesday evening, August 13, 2002, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage, MO, following an illness of several months. He was born March 24, 1960, Stafford, KS, to Melvin Laverne Koehn and Viola Fern Smith Koehn. He married Lisa J. Wilkins on September 2, 1995, in Walker, MO, and she survives of the home. Monty grew up in Walker, MO, and attended the Walker R-4 Schools and was a member of The Living Faith Mennonite Church. He drove a truck for various companies throughout the country before returning to Walker in 1994 at which time he became manager of Metz Grain (Harwood Division) where he has been the past eight years. He was a member of the Nevada Eagles Lodge #3770 for 15 years. He was an avid fisherman, mushroom hunter, and loved to sing. Helen Marie Koester, 75, Nevada, MO passed away Thursday evening, September 19, 2002 at Freeman West Medical Center, Joplin, MO following a lengthy illness. She was born April 30, 1927 in Munford, NY to the late Frank Paul and Rachel Wendy Martin Paul. Ms. Koester was raised in the state of New York. She came to Nevada in 1975. She had worked at the Nevada State Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1989. Survivors include one daughter, Donna Love, Nevada, MO; two sons, Donald Koester, Medina, NY, David Cargill, Dallas GA; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Paul, Hamlin, NY, Norman Paul, Nevada, MO; and one sister, Betty Reid, Munford, NY. Also surviving are her maternal grandparents, David and Connie Phillips, Nevada, MO; paternal grandparents, Debi Purtle, Nevada, MO, and Don Landreth, El Dorado Springs, MO; maternal great-grandparents, Don and Betty Stukesbary, Nevada, MO, Phil and Mary Phillips, Donna, TX, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Jenna Ogle; maternal great-grandmother, Dorothy Porter, and one uncle, Johnny Phillips. Gary Lee 'Jake' Ledbetter, 50, Nevada, MO, formerly of Pleasanton, KS, and Denver, CO, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2002, in Nevada, MO. He was born May 9, 1951, in Fullerton, CA, to Marvin Walter Ledbetter and Edith Ruth Bogle Ledbetter Bourassa. Gary grew up in the Southern United States, living in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. He served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict. Following military service, he worked in law enforcement for the Drug Enforcement Administration and Department of Justice. He moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1981 where he met his wife, Connie Reasch of Arvada, Colorado. He operated his own private investigation service in Denver prior to moving to Pleasanton, Kansas, in 1977. Currently he was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for Champlin Trucking, Rich Hill, Missouri. He was a member of the Lions Club of Pleasanton, Kansas. Survivors include his wife, Connie, of the home, two sons, Clayton and Kyle Ledbetter, of the home, one sister, Jeanie Chance, Pleasanton, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Daonne in 1984 and his mother in 1999. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton, KS. Interment

Frankie Leonard, Sr., 90, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday morning, February 5, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center following an illness of several months. He was born June 23, 1911, in Nevada, MO, to Eddie A. Leonard and Bessie Pearl Carey Leonard. He married Janice E. Shaffer on September 5, 1964, in Las Vegas, NV, and she survives of the home. Mr. Leonard was born and raised in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School. He was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church, Nevada, MO. He worked for 25 years as a federal poultry inspector in California and Missouri retiring in 1976. Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Carla Oaks, Gaylord, MI, and Debbie Williams, Nevada, MO; three grandchildren, Timmy, Jeremy, and Brian Williams, all of Nevada, MO, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Fankie Leonard, Jr., three sisters, Anna May Williams, Georgia Leonard. and Jesse Smith, and one brother Howard Osborne.. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2002, at Moore Cemetery. Pastor Kelly Kiger will officiate. Ora Mae Lessen, 94, Lamar, MO, passed away Thursday night, July 18, 2002, at Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar following a sudden illness. She was born January 17, 1908, in Vernon County, MO, to Frank Kelly and Cordelia King Kelly. She married Charles Lessen on November 2, 1931, in Nevada, MO. He preceded her in death on November 19, 1975. Mrs. Lessen was born and raised in Vernon County and spent the majority of her life here. She was a member of the Church of The Nazarene and was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Kistner, Lamar, MO; one son, Kenny Smith, Nevada, MO; six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia Mae Lessen; one grandson, Robby Kistner, two brothers, and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Pastor Rex Scoles officiating. Interment
will follow in Moore Cemetery. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 7:00-8:00 Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
