Charlene Levaugh Smith, 66, Overland Park, KS, passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 20, 2002, at the Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS, following a brief illness. She was born December 19, 1935, in Milo, MO, to John Franklin Levaugh and Anna Lee Gose Levaugh. She was married to Leon Smith on October 27, 1956, in Nevada, MO, and he survives of the home in Overland Park. Charlene grew up in Milo, MO, and graduated from Nevada High School in 1953. For the past 28 years, she has lived in Johnson County, KS. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Johnson County Christian Church in Overland Park, KS. She was a homemaker and was loved by all family and friends who knew her. Survivors in addition to her husband Leon, include two daughters, Jonna Cole, Overland Park, KS, and Leanna Walkowiak of Lenexa, KS; her mother, Anna Lee Levaugh of Milo, MO, sister, Velma Allene Long, Overland Park, KS, and two granddaughters, Rachel and Megan Walkowiak, both of Lenexa, KS. Samuel Lofquest

Samuel Lawrence Lofquest, 78, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday morning, March 11, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, following a short illness. He was born July 24, 1923, in Stuart, NE, to Aaron Lawrence Lofquest and Sarah Ann Green Lofquest. He married Betty Bell Montgomery on December 9, 1948, in Stuart, NE. She preceded him in death on October 2, 1991. Mr. Lofquest served in the Army during WW II in the Philippines and Japan. He came to Nevada in 1953 and worked for Nevada State Hospital for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post #1000, Jefferson City, MO, and the VFW Post #2175 in Nevada, MO. Survivors include three daughters, Linda Sims, Doris Marsh, and Karen Davis, all of Nevada, MO; one son, Lawrence Lofquest, Nevada, MO; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty and his parents. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2002, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, with Rev. Elsie Logan

Elsie Elaine Murdoch Logan, 86, El Dorado Springs, MO, formerly of Montevallo, passed away Tuesday morning, November 26, 2002, at Community Springs Healthcare, El Dorado Springs, MO, following an extended illness. She was born March 13, 1916, at the family farm near Edgerton, KS, to Robert Murray McCheyne Murdoch and Grace Elsie Haynes Murdoch. She married John A. Logan on January 2, 1941, in Ponca City, OK. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1972. She and her family moved to Lyndon, KS, in 1918. Elsie attended rural school and then graduated from Lyndon High School in 1943. She was employed by Palace Clothing in Topeka and attended Strickler Business School. Following her marriage, she and her husband later moved to Kansas City where she was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank. In 1958, they purchased a farm at Montevallo, MO. After retirement, they moved to the farm where she expanded her talent for ceramics and set up a home business 'Antique Doll Reproductions'. Her business grew in ceramic and porcelain dolls and became international. She also took a passionate interest in community affairs; opening and running The Old Country Store at Montevallo for many years. She was interested in community service. One of her projects included the restoration of the Old School in Montevallo. Elsie wrote a weekly column for the Nevada paper and did many things to promote the whole community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nevada. Elsie suffered a stroke on August 2, 2000, and remained in nursing home care until her death. She always maintained her faith in God, country and family. God has blessed her in many ways and she will be greatly missed. Survivors include one sister, Rosemary Stewart, Osage City, KS, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death in addtion to her husband John, by one brother and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Interment

Donna Lee Love, 55, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday, May 9, 2003, at St. John's Hospital, Joplin, MO. She was born February 24, 1948, in Rochester, NY, to Robert Edwin Koester and Helen Marie Paul. She was married to Vernon Howrey, Sr. and later she was married to William E. Love on September 8, 1990, in Nevada, MO. He survives of the home. In addition to her husband William, she is survived by two sons, Vernon Howrey, Jr., Deerfield, MO, and Jimmy Howrey, Springfield, MO, three step-grandgrandchildren, and two brothers, David Cargill, Dallas, GA, and Donald Koester, Medina, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Pastor Mike Hutchens officiating. William "Bill" Lowry

William "Bill" Lowry, the son of Paul K. and Grace E. Bowen Lowry, was born September 14, 1934 in Vandalia, Missouri and died May 15, 2003 at Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 1 day. Mr. Lowry was united in marriage to the former Marvel S. Strehlow on June 26, 1952 in Kansas City, Kansas. He was employed as a chemical operator for Proctor and Gamble until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the body of Christ. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Marvel, of the home, two sons, Douglas Lowry and Robert Lowry, both of Kansas City, Kansas, four daughters, Paula Lowry of Raytown, Missouri, Patricia Markley of Joplin, Missouri, Pamela Weishaar of Marysville, Washington, Elizabeth Lowry of Kansas City, Missouri, one sister, Marilyn Downey of Grain Valley, Missouri,14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Mr. Lowry was preceded in death by a son, Gregory and a brother, James Lowry. Funeral services will be Sunday, May 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Mosher officiating. Austin Cole Lukenbill, age five, of Nevada died suddenly Sunday, April 14, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident near Deerfield, MO. He was born May 6, 1996, in Nevada, MO, the son of Roger D. Lukenbill and Christina Mayfield. Austin was a kindergarten student at Bryan Elementary School in Nevada. Frederick Lukenbill

Frederick Lukenbill, the son of George and Ida Mae Weddle Lukenbill, was born September 12, 1911 in Guymon, Oklahoma and died July 1, 2002 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 19 days. He was united in marriage to the former Mary Evelyn Hicks on May 9, 1929 in Fort Scott, Kansas and she preceded him in death March 2, 1990. Mr. Lukenbill was employed on the MKT Railroad as a lineman from 1945 to 1958. He was then employed as an assembly line producer for the Allis Chalmers Implement Company of Independence, Missouri from 1960 until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Nevada and The United Steel Workers of America. Survivors include four sons, Robert D. Lukenbill of Texas, Leonard "Jack" Lukenbill of Harrisonville, Missouri, David Lukenbill of Arizona, Frank Lukenbill of Gladstone, Missouri, four daughters, Marjorie Hammontree of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, Mary Lukenbill of Nevada, Missouri, Linda Fanning of Humansville, Missouri, Sharon Brocka of Branson, Missouri, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was also preceded in death by three sons, Elmer, Roger and Charles. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday July 6, 2002 at Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood, Missouri with Mr. John Nichols officiating. Leota Lyons

Leota Adele Lyons, 95, Columbia, MO, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away from this life Tuesday night, January 1, 2002, at Columbia Manor, Columbia, MO, where she had made her home for the past 14 years. She was born September 7, 1906, in Lexington, NE, the second of eight children to Harvey D. Vilott and Ethel Izora Shively Vilott. After moving to Nevada, MO, she worked in the railroad office for a number of years. It was in Nevada that she met her baseball player, George T. Lyons. On April 22, 1929, Leota and George were married in Nashville, TN, and lived on a farm southwest of Nevada until they moved into town in 1946. George preceded her in death on August 12, 1981. Leota was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and Nevada baseball supporter/fan. Survivors include one son, George T. Lyons, Columbia, MO, and two daughters, Sally G. Darnell, El Dorado Springs, MO, and Zona N. Gates, Springfield, MO, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband of 52 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, one sister, and a son-in-law, Kenneth W. Roy Victor Mallette age 43 of Oswego, Ks, formerly of Nevada passed away on Friday April 11, 2003 at St. Johns Regional Medical Center in Joplin following a lengthy illness. He was born May 29,1959 in Gloucester, Mass to Roy W. Mallette and Carol Ann Thomas Mallette. Roy lived in Nevada for a number of years during the 1970's and 1980's. He was currently residing in Oswego, KS. Survivors include his mother, Carol Conard of Nevada, two sisters, Carole Hawn of Pittsburg, KS and Josephine Wallace of Clarksville, TN, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and one sister, Frances Mallette. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Edna Mae Manes, 75, Nevada, MO passed away Friday, May 23, 2003 at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO following a brief illness. She was born June 8, 1927 in Bolivar, MO to William Hembree and Bessie Cora Turner Hembree. She was married March 11, 1946 in Bolivar, MO to James B. Manes. He preceded her in death February 3, 1980. Mrs. Manes was raised in Bolivar, MO and spent her youth there. She came to Nevada in 1952 and spent the remainder of her life here. Survivors include one son, James R. Manes, Clinton, MO; two daughters, Joyce Miller, Nevada, MO, Carol Manes, Nevada, MO; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother Willie Hembree, Aurora, MO; one sister, Betty Price, Springfield, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, an infant brother and one sister, Evelyn McDermott. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Newton Burial Park in Nevada with Ray Dean Scism officiating. Sylvia Lee Mason, age 89 formerly of Nevada, passed away Saturday December 15, 2001 at the Licking Manor Care Center in Licking, MO following a short illness. She was born October 15, 1912 in Hardy, AR to Ester Wilburn and Anna Hanna Shultz Wilburn. In 1938 she was married to Edgar Mason in Naylor, MO and he preceded her in death in 1962. Sylvia came to Nevada in 1942 from Hardy, AR where she lived until 1988 at which time she moved to Edgar Springs, MO. She a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church and worked at Fanning's Nursing Home in Nevada for a number of years as an aid. She has resided in the Licking Manor Care Center for the past eight years. Survivors include one sister Goldie M. Bates of Sullivan, MO, two nieces, and two nephews. She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother Cecil Wilburn in 1995. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment

Ella I. Maxwell, 93, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday night, March 3, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born January 4, 1909, to Arthur Leroy Powell and Verna Townsend Powell. She married John Frank Maxwell on October 16, 1932, in Nevada, MO. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1993. Mrs. Maxwell was a graduate of Nevada High School in 1928. She was employed for 34 years by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1964. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Vernon County Historical Society and the Vernon County Humane Society. There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one brother. Darlene Maynard, 68, Metz, MO, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her home in Metz, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born December 30, 1934, in Springfield, CO, to Walter Wayne Hunter and Ruby Graham Hunter. She married Jim Maynard on March 28, 1952, in Bentonville, AR, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Maynard was born in Colorado but spent most of her formative years in Ogden, UT. She came to Missouri in 1949. Following her marriage, she lived in a number of locals, returning to this area in 1998 and spent the remainder of her life here. She was a member of the Twin Falls, ID, Presbyterian Church. She was past President of Twin Falls, ID and Pocatello, ID Jayceettes, and Grandview, MO Wrestling Booster Club. Survivors in addition to her husband Jim, of the home, include two sons; Randy Maynard, Hume, MO, and Rick Maynard, Sand Point, ID; one daughter, Sheri Maynard, Lake Geneva, WI, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Delbert Dean Hunter, Independence, MO, and one sister, Jean Hunter, Bangkok, Thailand. She was preceded in death by one brother, Darrol Wayne Hunter. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. David Martin officiating. Nicholas Dale McAdoo, 48, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday morning, July 19, 2002, follow a sudden illness. He was born June 19, 1954, in Nevada, MO, to Harlan Peter McAdoo and Nelda Jo Means McAdoo. Nick lived his whole life in Nevada. He loved his family, dog, and his home. Survivors include his parents, Harlan P. and Nelda Jo McAdoo, Nevada, MO; two sisters, Sharon Turner and her husband, Norman, Nevada, MO, Cathy Wilheim and her husband John, Wichita, KS; one brother, Jack McAdoo, Nevada, MO; four nephews, Eric Turner, Kansas City, MO, Mark Turner, Nevada, MO, Zackary McAdoo, Republic, MO, J. R. Wilheim, New York City, NY; two great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Dellmer McAdoo, and his grandmother, Lydia Means. Harlan Peter McAdoo

Harlan Peter McAdoo, 76, the son of Clarence J. and Zella Maude Babcock McAdoo, was born October 28, 1925 in Cleveland, Oklahoma and died September 4, 2002 at his residence. Mr. McAdoo lived in Iowa and Kansas before coming to Nevada, first in 1935 and permanently in 1939. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1943, missing the graduation ceremony so he could take an exam for the military. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving on the destroyer escort U.S.S. Rinehart for seven trips across the Atlantic protecting convoys of men and supplies bound for Europe. He was also stationed in Guam, returning home in 1946. Mr. McAdoo was united in marriage to Nelda Jo Means on November 29, 1947 in Nevada, Missouri. After working briefly as an auto mechanic, he was employed by the United States Postal Service in 1948, where he remained until 1977. He was a letter carrier, clerk, supervisor of mail and acting postmaster, the latter in Lamar, Missouri. From 1954 to 1965 he served in the National Guard, winning two state championships in .45-caliber pistol shooting competition and one in .22-caliber. He was a charter member of the Community Christian Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, he was an expert hunter and fisherman and excelled at woodworking, from whittling to carpentry. He is survived by his wife, Nelda Jo of the home, two daughters, Sharon Turner of Nevada and Cathy Wilheim of Wichita, Kansas; a son, Jack Edwin of the home; four grandsons, Eric Turner of Kansas City, J.R. Wilheim of New York, New York; Mark Turner of Nevada and Zackary McAdoo of Republic, Missouri; two great granddaughters, Lydia and Hannah Turner of Kansas City, and one great grandson, Brock Turner of Nevada. Mr. McAdoo was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Joe Dellmer in 1973 and Nicholas Dale in 2002. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Mr. John Nichols officiating. Interment

Jennie Etheline McClintick

Jennie Etheline McClintick died of heart failure on March 11, 2003 at the Joe Clark Residential Care Home, where she had resided for just over one year. Etheline, as she was known, was born on February 12, 1917 near Brookfield, Missouri, the daughter of Harriet Estella and William Altie McClintick. Her mother passed away when Etheline was only nine days old and Altie remarried and fathered seven more children. Four of those siblings survive Etheline's passing; two brothers, Ellis B. McClintick of Bellevue, Nebraska and Robert R. McClintick of Indian Wells, California, two sisters, Betty L. Portwood of Dallas, Texas and Byrdie M. Hogendorn and her husband, Edward of Amarillo, Texas, a multitude of nieces, nephews, and their children and a host of friends. Etheline resided in a number of rural communities in Kansas and Missouri, before moving to Nevada in October 1951. She loved Nevada and kept herself fully informed about its people, its politics and its business. She lived the simple life and worked hard and saved her pennies. She never married and had no children. She rarely travelled and was a dedicated homebody. Her home and her garden were her passion and she maintained those assets until she fell and broke her hip two years ago. Since then she has lived in a nursing or assisted living home. There she was still austere and simple and loved by all who knew her. Etheline will be sorely missed by her many friends and relatives. Graveside services will be held at Moore Cemetery on Friday, March 14, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Eldon Shaw officiating. The family will receive friends at Evergreen Memorial Chapel from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Ruby McConnaughey

Ruby L. 'Tiny' McConnaughey, 73, Moundville, MO, passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 13, 2002, at her home in Moundville following an illness of several weeks. She was born March 25, 1928, in Nevada, MO, to Warner Otis McDowell and Augusta Jane VanLoon McDowell. She married J. R. McConnaughey on May 28, 1947, in Ft. Scott, KS. He preceded her in death on November 23, 1992. Mrs. McConnaughey was born, raised, and spent all of her life here. She graduated from Nevada High School. She was a member of the Church of God Holiness, Deerfield, MO. She worked for 17 years in the meat department of Village Market, retiring in 1984. Survivors include one son, Randy McConnaughey, New Bern, NC, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert and Bill McDowell, both of Nevada, MO; two sisters, Eva Capelle and Doris Cullor, both of Ft. Scott, KS, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, James W. McConnaughey; one brother, Charles H. McDowell, and one sister, Kathryn Hayes. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Deerfield Cemetery with Rev. Bill Smith officiating.
