Gilbert McDowell

Gilbert Oliver Crismon McDowell,84, Nevada, MO passed away Wednesday morning, December 11, 2002 at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Gilbert was born December 1, 1918 in Crocker, MO to Anthony Leonard Crismon and Augusta Jane Van Loon Crismon. He was married November 28, 1949 in Bentonville, AR to Irene Adkins McDowell. As a young boy he moved to Vernon County with his mother and stepfather, Otis McDowell. He graduated from Pleasant Ridge School and began farming at an early age. In December1941 he joined the U.S. Navy. Throughout World War II, he served as a Navy Air Force metal-smith, spending time in Hutchinson, KS, the South Pacific and the Philippines. After the war, he taught naval aviation metal-smithing in San Diego, CA until his honorable discharge in November 1946. After working as a tool and die maker, aviation mechanic and real estate salesman, he went back to farming. From 1959 to 1999, he owned and operated McDowell Pecan and Catfish Farms north of Nevada. He retired to Nevada in 1999. He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge #564 and a founding member of the Southwest Missouri Nut Growers Association. In 1983, he was named Regional Tree Farmer of the year. Gilbert had two federal agricultural patents on pecan varieties, including pecan sorters and crackers. He loved to hunt, fish and tinker in his workshop. Gilbert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lola Irene Adkins McDowell, of the home; four children, Leon McDowell, Metz, MO, Laurie Atwood, Nevada, MO, Teresa Hawkins and Carolyn Hadley, both of Huntsville, AR; eight grandchildren, Sherri, Steven, Bill, Branden, Eric, Josh, Colton and Makalia; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Cullor and Eva Capelle, both of Fort Scott, KS; one brother, Bill McDowell, Nevada, MO; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2002 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO with Reverend Paul Mooney officiating. Interment
will follow at National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS. Friends may call from now and until the time of service at Ferry Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. The Elks memorial service will precede the visitation at 6:45 p.m.. The family suggests memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Glenn McElwee

Glenn O. McElwee, 79, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday night, February 6, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 22, 1922, in Carrolton, MO, to Elmer McElwee and Bess Frye McElwee. He married Izola Lenora Houdeshell on September 8, 1962, in Kansas City, MO, and she preceded him in death on July 12, 1995. Mr. McElwee made his home in Vernon County most of his lifetime. Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Wilson, Lancaster, CA, and Linda Etter, Joplin, MO; six grandchildren, and one sister, Elma Hawkins, Sierra Vista, AZ. Lydia McMillan

Lydia Mary Davidson McMillan, age 95 of Austin, TX and formerly of Nevada died at the Heritage Duval Gardens care facility in Austin, TX on December 11, 2002 of natural causes. She was born on February 12, 1907 at the home, five miles east of El Dorado Springs, MO. She is the only survivor of the four children of Samuel Edward and Laura Elizabeth Pace Davidson. She out-lived all of her immediate family. On July 27, 1935 she married Ralph Preston McMillan. They had two children, a son, Dr. O. David McMillan and a daughter, Sharon Yvonne McMillan-Farnham. Ralph died September 1, 1960. A graduate of El Dorado Springs High School, Mrs. McMillan attended Southwest Baptist College at Bolivar, MO, and then at Southwest Missouri State Teachers College at Springfield, MO. She received a lifetime teaching certificate from the state of Missouri. She taught eight years in Cedar County rural schools. She was then employed as a social worker by the state of Missouri, being the first County Relief Director of Cedar County. After further training in Joplin, MO, she served as St. Clair County Welfare Director for 15 years, then 13 years as Vernon County Director of Family Services until her retirement in 1972. In 1927 she was saved and then was baptized into Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church at Pacetown, MO. Each time she moved her residence; she also moved her membership to First Baptist Church in Joplin, to First Baptist Church in Osceola, and to First Baptist Church in Nevada until her death. She loved her Lord and remained faithful to Him. Her goal in life was to always be kind, regardless of circumstances. She served in various ways at church as Sunday School Teacher, District Director of Missouri, and leader of Church Training Director of bus ministry and of Ministry to the homebound. Other memberships included, Missouri State Teachers Association, American Public Welfare Association, Eastern Star, and as a 42-year member of Business and Professional Women's Club of which she served as president in 1963-64. Mrs. McMillan was preceded in death by her beloved grandfather, Rev. Ike N. Pace, her parents; all three of her brothers, Nathan Edward, Samuel Wilburn ('Dick'), and Harold Aldine ('Cap'); her husband and her daughter, Sharon Yvonne McMillan-Farnham. Survivors are one son, Dr. O. David McMillan, Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Troy Y. Farnham, Austin, TX, Stacy F. Wilhoit, El Dorado Springs, MO, and O. David McMillan Jr., state of California, and two great-grandchildren, Trevor Elliston Farnham, Austin, TX and Shadell A'Vonne Wilhoit, El Dorado Springs, MO. Bette McQuay

Bette Rae McQuay, 79, Garden Grove, CA, passed away February 6, 2002, in Anaheim, CA. She was born February 6, 1923, in Salt Lake City, UT, to John Albin Johnson, Jr. and Thelma May Stevens Johnson. She married Ralph Junior McQuay on November 17, 1946, in Los Angeles, CA, and he preceded her in death on December 29, 2001. Mrs. McQuay grew up and went to school in Salt Lake City. She moved to Los Angeles after finishing school where she met and married Ralph McQuay. They moved to the St. Louis, MO, area for a period of time. She then moved to Osawatomie with her family before returning to the Los Angeles area where she lived for the remainder of her life. Bette's family was her life; she was a homemaker, spending all of her time caring for her family. Survivors include one daughter, Jenette Parker, Shawano, WI, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends; five brothers-in-law, Doyle McQuay and his wife, Merna Hermitage, MO, William 'Chip' McQuay and his wife Marilyn, Hermitage, MO, Bob McQuay and his wife Marie, Osawatomie, KS, Wilbern McQuay and his wife Ritz, Stockton, MO, and Ronald McQuay and his wife, Nonie, Stockton, MO. Ralph McQuay
Died On December 29, 2001
Ralph Junior McQuay, 74, Santa Anna, CA, passed away Saturday night, December 29, 2001, at Royale Health Care Center, Santa Anna, CA, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 2, 1927, in Doniphan, MO, to Richard E. McQuay and Cordelia Vance McQuay. He married Bette Rae Johnson McQuay on November 17, 1946, and she survives of Garden Grove, CA. Ralph grew up and attended school in the St. Louis, MO area. He worked at the St. Louis Ship Builders and Steel Company before entering the Merchant Marine service for two years prior to his service in the Navy from October 29, 1945-October 27, 1947 where he served as a ship fitter third class. He received the WW II Victory Medal. Upon being discharged from the service, he and his wife returned to the St. Louis area for a period of time. They then moved to Osawatomie, KS, where he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1954 Ralph and his family returned to the Los Angeles, California, area living and working for the remainder of his life. Survivors in addition to his wife Bette, include one daughter, Jenette Parker, of Shawano, Wisconsin; one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter, five brothers, Doyle McQuay and his wife Merna, Hermitage, MO, William 'Chip' McQuay and his wife Marilyn, Hermitage, MO, Bob McQuay and his wife Marie, Osawatomie, KS, Wilbern McQuay and his wife Rita, Stockton, MO, and Ronald McQuay and his wife Nonie, Stockton, MO. Sisters Mary Needham and her husband Rex, Lane, KS, Sharon Martin and her husband Jim, Lane, KS, and Violet Adams and her husband Kenny, Nevada, MO, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Juanita Merle McQuay and Patsy Jane Richey. Committal services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Moore Cemetery on Saturday, January 12, 2002. Dorothy Rodieck McReynolds, 81, Overland Park, KS. passed away Wednesday morning March 6, 2002, at the home of her daughter, following a lengthy illness.. She was born July 30, 1920 in Vernon County, MO. to Hilton Combs and Hattie Jane Stover Combs. She married Everette Rodieck in June 1940, they lived and farmed in the Harwood, MO. area until his death in 1977. She married Walter McReynolds in 1982 and lived in Nevada, MO until March 2001 when they moved to Overland Park, KS. Mrs. McReynolds retired from Nellie Don after working there 30 years. She is a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Survivors in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Donna Goetting, Overland Park, KS., Sharyn Perkins, K.C., MO. Two stepdaughters, Sarah Groves, Newton, IA., Ann McReynolds-Zeinet, Pringle, S.D., one stepson, David McReynolds, Russell, IA. and three granddaughters, ten step-grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Lloyd McWilliams

Lloyd A. McWilliams, 86, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday January 7, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following an illness of several months. He was born July 6, 1915, in Sheldon, MO, to Adam Francis McWilliams and Blanch Elizabeth Gilmore McWilliams. He married Annie M. Brown on July 25, 1936, in Girard, KS, and she survives of the home. Mr. McWilliams was born and raised in the Sheldon area in Barton County. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He farmed in Vernon County most of his life. He came to Nevada from the Sheldon area in 1979. He managed the Gabriel Car Wash for 16 years. Survivors in addition to his wife Annie, include one brother, Glen McWilliams, Parsons, KS; three nieces, Betty Bobbett and Ruth Mankins, both of Augusta, KS, and Barbara Nugen, Edgerton, KS, and two nephews, Glen and Tom McWilliams, both of Parsons, KS. He was preceded in death by one brother, Everett McWilliams in 2001. Mr. McWilliams preferred no services, but he requested for his many friends to remember times that they might have spent together, such as at the car wash or maybe visiting around the square. Anna Bell McZegle, 76, Kaufman, TX, formerly of Vernon County, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Kindred Hospital, Dallas, TX, following an illness of a few weeks. She was born May 15, 1926, in Edmond, OK, to William T. Anderson and Georgia Hebbe Anderson. She married Edward McZegle on August 3, 1942, in King Fisher, OK, and he preceded her in death on June 9, 1996. Mrs. McZegle was born and raised in Oklahoma. She came to Vernon County in 1945 and spent virtually the rest of her life here. She has resided in Kaufman, TX, for the past three years. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, Edward McZegle, Sheldon, MO, and John McZegle, Dallas, TX; four daughters, Patsy Hannen, Kansas City, KS, Linda Clouse, Fayetteville, AR, Janet Sackreiter, Kaufman, TX, and Shirley Collins, Dallas, TX, nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Jeffrey Scott McZegle, 35, Sheldon, MO, died at his home in Sheldon on Wednesday, April 24, 2002. He was born November 3, 1966, in Kansas City, MO, to Edward Leroy McZegle and Karen Lynn Beattie McZegle. Jeffrey grew up in Dallas, TX, and graduated from high school in Texas. He came to Sheldon five years ago. He was a labor foreman and heavy equipment operator for T. J. Lambert Construction in Dallas for six years prior to coming to Sheldon in 1997. He made his living farming on the family farm in Sheldon. Survivors include his parents, Edward and Karen McZegle, Mesquite, TX; one sister, Lisa Ann Irvin, Kaufman, TX; grandmother, Anna Bell McZegle, Kaufman, TX, one uncle, several aunts, nieces and cousins. Carl Amos Melton, 92, Sheldon, MO passed away Friday morning, January 25, 2002 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO following a brief illness. He was born March 11, 1909 in Zodiac, MO to the late Charles Thomas Melton and Mary Elizabeth Annabeth Rapp Melton. He was married December 25, 1936 in Lamar, MO to Ada 'Faye' Willhoite. She preceded him in death May 27, 2001. Mr. Melton was raised in Vernon County. He graduated from Sheldon High School in 1927. He attended Drury Business College, Springfield, MO for two years on a lifetime scholarship. He was a member of the Drury basketball team. He started farming during the Great Depression with horses after working in Iowa in the cornfields for two years. He was a lifetime resident and farmer of the Sheldon Community. Lavern Edward Merchant, 71, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday morning, November 8, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born October 13, 1931, in Vernon County, MO, to Orville Lee Merchant and Ruby Ruth Beaver Merchant. He married Ruth Evelyn Howell on March 12, 1955, in Nevada and she survives of the home. Mr. Merchant was born and raised in Vernon County and spent virtually his entire lifetime here. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1948 to 1952. He worked for the Nevada Fire Department for 23 years, retiring in 1986. Survivors in addition to his wife Ruth, include two sons, Hank Merchant, Moundville, MO, and Rick Merchant, Nevada, MO; two daughters, Karren Smith and Cheryl Peavler, both of Nevada; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Ronald Burnett, Lee's Summit, MO, and Donald Burnett, Belton, MO; and one half sister, Kathleen Berry, Boston, MA. May Mische, age 102 of Nevada, MO, passed away early Thursday morning, May 9, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. She was born on July 15, 1899, in Cook County, TX, to David Joseph Emery and Martha Carolyn Lynd Emery. She was married to Daniel Fredrick Mische on November 1, 1925, in Nevada, MO. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1961. Mrs. Mische came to Vernon County, MO, with her family at an early age where she lived all her life. She was a graduate of Nevada High School in 1918. She taught school in the rural Vernon County schools for seven years. She had become a member of The Church of The Nazarene in recent years. Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Mische, Nevada, MO, and one sister-in-law, Evelyn Emery, Nevada, MO. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Pansy Emery, and one brother, Marvin Emery. Robert Neil Mitchell, 75, Nevada, MO, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 12, 1927, in Ft. Scott, KS, to Walter Jenkins Mitchell and Lena Mae Beaman Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was raised in the Deerfield area and spent his entire life in this area. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Nevada. He is survived by one brother, W. G. Mitchell, Nevada, MO; one sister, Ada Jean Hughes, Independence, MO; and several nieces and nephews. Wilma Ruth Mitchem, 79, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO, following an illness of several months. She was born February 26, 1924, in Schell City, MO, to John W. Walker and Maggie L. Clark Walker. She married Everett L. Mitchem on March 8, 1943, and he preceded her in death on September 28, 1998. Mrs. Mitchem was born and raised in Schell City and was a graduate of Schell City High School. She and her husband farmed for a number of years in Schell City before coming to Nevada in 1975 where she has lived ever since. She is survived by one son, Gene Mitchem, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Wanda Durham, Rich Hill, MO; two brothers, Johnnie B. Walker, and Raymond A. Walker, Clinton, MO, 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Fred Walker, and one great-grandson. Lawrence 'Winfred' Mooney, 93, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday, December 13, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a short illness. He was born October 11, 1909, in Foxtown, KS, to Lawrence Mooney and Lula Maye Goss Mooney. He married Gracie I. Springer in 1928 and was later married to Velma Brundridge whom preceded him in death on March 12, 1995. Mr. Mooney was born and raised in Foxtown, KS. He attended Longacre School and Moundville High School. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Nevada, MO. He retired from Nevada State Hospital in 1971 after working for 22 years. He also farmed in the Moundville area most of his life. He had made his home in Nevada since 1952. Survivors include one son, Robert Mooney, Nevada, MO; three daughters, Patsy Weber, Moundville, MO, Lois Mooney, and Betty Williams, both of Independence, MO; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandsons; one stepson, Vernon Brundridge, and numerous step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Velma; brother, Earl Mooney; two sisters, Gladys Stanback and Mary Ann Lindley, two grandchildren; one stepson, Elmer Brundridge, and one stepdaughter, Alice Reedy. Myrl M. Mooneyhan age 93, Nevada passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2003 at the Barone Alzheimers Care Unit in Nevada following a short illness. She was born on December 5, 1909 in Montevallo, MO to Otto R. Bright and Daisey Banker Bright. On October 2, 1938 she was married in Nevada to Olen Russell Mooneyhan and he preceded her in death in 1976. Myrl graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1929 and taught school in rural Cedar County for 7 years. She has resided in Nevada since 1975 having moved from Bronaugh. She was a longtime member of the Bronaugh Christian Church and later attended the Community Christian Church in Nevada. She was active in the Nevada Senior Center. Survivors include one son Tom Mooneyhan of Nevada, three grandchildren, David Mooneyhan of Stillwater, OK, Dana Redburn of Nevada, and Lisa Tanner of Virginia Beach, VA, one sister, Norma Shearburn, Nevada, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and four sisters. Mary Ruth Moore, 74, formerly of Bronaugh, MO, passed away Wednesday morning, January 22, 2003, at the ABC Health Center in Harrisonville, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 15, 1928, in Vernon County, MO, to Oliver Clinton Cliffman and Ruby Deanna Couch Cliffman. Mary was born and raised in Vernon County and spent the majority of her life here. She was a member of the Bronaugh Baptist Church, Bronaugh, MO. She has resided in Harrisonville since 1992. Survivors include one daughter, Deanna Moore, Carthage, MO; one brother, Roy W. Cliffman, Bronaugh, MO, three nephews, and one niece. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment
will follow in Worsley Cemetery, Bronaugh, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends Saturday, January 25, 2003, at 9:30 a.m. and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
