James C. O'Neil, 81, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday morning, April 5, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. He was born October 6, 1920, in San Diego, CA. Mr. O'Neil was born in California and raised in Minnesota. He made his living as a truck driver. He came to this area in the early 1950's and spent the remainder of his life here. Survivors include two sons, James and Jay O'Neil, both of Lamar, MO; one daughter, Jennifer Taylor, Springfield, MO, seven grandchildren, numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. Mr. O'Neil was cremated. A committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO. Arrangements are by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Pearl O'Toole
Died On May 17, 2002
Pearl O'Toole, 86, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday night, May 15, 2002, at Christian Health Care. She was born May 17, 1916, at Metz, MO, to Melvin Shults and Rose Morris Shults. Mrs. O'Toole graduated from Metz High School on May 4, 1932. Following graduation, Pearl was employed at the ASC office from April 1933 to August 1937. On January 30, 1936, in Butler, MO, she was married to Irl Lee Harmon of Horton, MO. To this union one daughter was born, Patsy Adams who survives. Pearl was employed at the ASC office again from May 1942 to September 1955. She was married on January 8, 1955, in Lamar, MO, to Charles O'Toole who preceded her in death in 1972. She was employed at Renwick Insurance Agency from December 1955 to March 1983 when she retired. Her retirement years allowed her to travel extensively and enjoy the company of her many friends whose friendships she cherished. Pearl was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Pearl is survived by one daughter, Patsy Adams and her husband Leonard, Blue Springs, MO; two granddaughters, Nancy Rooney and her husband John, Scituate, MA, and Cindy Dickey and her husband Scott, Austin, TX; one cousin, Marie Sumner, Nevada, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O'Toole; one brother, John William Shults, and one sister, Mae Paxton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Scott Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Troy Payne

Troy Edward Payne, 80, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday morning, February 11, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, following an illness of several months. He was born March 10, 1921, in Harrison, AR, to Ross Payne and Nancy Wilkins. He married Margaret 'Peggy' Syme on June 16, 1946, in Bellefonte, AR, and she survives of the home. Mr. Payne was born and raised in Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the European Theatre of War. Following the service, he returned to Arkansas and worked for many years at the R.C. Cola Plant. He moved to Nevada in 1963 and went to work for Witt Printing in El Dorado Springs, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Church of Gold Holiness. In addition to his wife Peggy, survivors include two daughters, Patricia Agee and her husband, Del, Nevada, MO, and Janice Phillips and her husband, Jimmie, Carthage, MO; four grandchildren, Michelle Hogan and her husband, Andrew, Nevada, MO, Terrence Loudermilk, Nevada, MO, Melissa Williams and her husband, Daniel, Joplin, MO, and Melinda Gordon, Joplin, MO; three great-grandchildren, Chantel and Kimberlee Hogan, both of Nevada, MO, and Brayden Williams, Joplin, MO; one sister, Pearl Wiley, Aztec, NM, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Jim Gragg officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 6:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2002, at the funeral home. Randall Curtis Pennington
Died On August 25, 2002
Randall Curtis Pennington, the son of Lewis E. & Teresa L. Sullivan Pennington, was born March 31, 1983 in Nevada, Missouri and died August 25, 2002 near Dennis, Kansas at the age of 19 years, 4 months and 24 days. Randy was a graduate of Nevada High School in 2001 and was a two year all state and three year all conference wrestler. He was currently attending Labette Community College in Parsons, Kansas on a full wrestling scholarship. He was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard, Company C203 Engineer-Combat Battalion. He attended the United Methodist Church of Nevada. Survivors include his parents, Lewis and Teresa Pennington of Nevada, Missouri, one brother, Donny and his wife, Angie, of Joplin, Missouri, one niece, Haven Pennington, one nephew, Braxton Pennington, paternal grandmother, Louise Pennington of Kansas City, Missouri, and maternal grandparents, John and Reccie Sullivan of Nevada, Missouri. He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, Curtis Pennington and a paternal grandmother, Mary Gooden. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 29, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Hall officiating. Burial will be at Moore Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Barney B. Perkins
Died On October 14, 2002
Barney B. Perkins, the son of Edgar N. and Blanche Blevins Perkins was born July 12, 1922 in Desota Parish, Louisiana and died October 14, 2002 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 2 days. Mr. Perkins was employed in furniture sales until his retirement in 1984. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge 3770 and the American Legion. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2175. Survivors include one stepdaughter, Teresa Cronin of Jackson, Mississippi, one niece, Sharon Flowers of Atlanta, Georgia, a close friend, Rosalie Chambers of Moundville, Missouri and numerous cousins. Mr. Perkins was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one half-brother. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday October 16, 2002 at the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery with Rev. Ralph L. Clark officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Homer Pettibon
Died On November 27, 2002
Homer D. Pettibon, 85, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday morning, November 27, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center following a lengthy illness. He was born June 15, 1917, in Deerfield, MO, to Thomas Harrison Pettibon and Grace Harris Pettibon. He married Alice Pauline Kash on November 27, 1941, in Nevada, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Pettibon was born and raised in Deerfield and spent virtually his entire life here. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Nevada, MO. He worked for many years as a carpenter and also worked for Kapple's Plumbing for 15 years. Survivors in addition to his wife Alice, include two sons, Doug and Joe Pettibon, both of Nevada, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2002, at the Church of Christ, Nevada, with Pastor Taylor Francis officiating. Interment will follow in Deerfield Cemetery. Friends may call now and until 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Ferry Funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Fair Haven Children's Home in care of the Church of Christ, Nevada.

Ethel Pettibon
Died On April 26, 2002
Ethel Mae Pettibon, 75, El Dorado Springs, MO, passed away Friday morning, April 26, 2002, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs following an illness of several months. She was born on July 7, 1926, in Deerfield, MO, to Elmer Wolfe and Blanche Schibrel Wolfe. She was married to Wendell D. Pettibon on July 7, 1944, and he preceded her in death in 1997. Ethel grew up in Deerfield and graduated from Nevada High School in 1944. She lived most of her adult life in El Dorado Springs. She did upholstery work out of her home, worked in real estate, and sold Avon at various times. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker. Ethel is survived by two sons Larry Pettibon and his wife Betty, Mulberry, KS, and Ronald Pettibon and his wife Rhonda, of El Dorado Springs; two daughters, Carolyn Ann Alexander and Judy Faye McGuirk, both of El Dorado Springs; one sister, Edith Dirks of Moundville, MO, thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. In addition to her husband Wendell, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Lana Gay Gray in 2000, and two brothers, Willard and Everette Wolfe. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday , April 29, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Howard McPeak officiating. Interment will follow in the Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield, MO. Friends may call from now until the hour of service on Monday at the funeral home.

William Phelps

William Earl Phelps, 84, Walker, MO, passed away Monday, February 17' 2003, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital, El Dorado Springs, MO, following a brief illness. He was born May 18, 1918, in Drew, MS, to Henry Phelps and Letha Templeton Phelps. He married Marguerite Milligan on June 19, 1940, in Nevada, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Phelps was born and raised in Mississippi. He came to Vernon County following his marriage and has spent the remainder of his life here. He made his living primarily as a carpenter and also did some trucking. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Vicksburg, MS. Survivors in addition to his wife Marguerite, of the home; two sons, Larry Phelps, Bath, IL, and Lanny Phelps, Walker, MO; two daughters, Letha Geer, Nevada, MO, and Tena Phelps, El Dorado Springs, MO, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Myra Garrett, one grandson, two brothers, and one sister. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO, with Tim Brewer officiating. James Pippin
Died On March 1, 2002
James Less Pippin. 80, Nevada, MO passed away Friday, March 1, 2002 at St. John's Medical Center, Joplin, MO following a lengthy illness. He was born October 17, 1921 in Garland, KS to the late James Lislie Pippin and Gracie Bell Halfhill Pippin. He was married in 1945 in Ft. Scott, Ks to Mabel Oyer Pippin. She preceded him in death May 1980. He married Wilma Henry Pippin April 23, 1982 in Miami, OK. She survives of the home. Mr. Pippin was raised in this area. He was a member of the Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the European theater of war. After the service he returned to Nevada where he made his living as a mechanic. He also owned and operated the Rainbow Gardens Night Club in Nevada for 23 years. He was a membe of the American Legion, Post #2 in Nevada. Along with his wife Wilma, survivors include, two sons, James Martin Pippin, Nevada, MO, Russell Eugene Pippin, Nevada, MO; three step-children, Lila Leann Carriker, Asheville, NC, Melba Boyd, Kansas City, MO, Randall Blystone Lincoln, AR; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Forgey, Olathe, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and four brothers, Bert, Bill, Frank and Jack Pippin. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Reverend Clyde Wishon officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada with full military honors. Friends may call after noon on Sunday and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home. Edna G. Place, the daughter of Willard P. and Tillie Ozenberger Crosswhite, was born August 25, 1918 in Walker, Missouri and died July 26, 2002 at Moore-Few Care Center at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 1 day. She was a graduate of Walker High School in 1936. She graduated from Kansas City Cosmetology School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Richard E. Place Sr. on November 19, 1939 in Nevada, Missouri and he preceded her in death May 13, 1983. She was a self-employed beautician for over 51 years, retiring in 1990. Edna was a member of First Baptist Church, Past President of the Nevada B.P.W. and the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include one son, Richard E. Place Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Nevada, Missouri, two daughters, Linda K. Evans and her husband, Lanny of Viburnum, Missouri, Patricia Ann Cosgrove and her husband, Jim of Springfield, Missouri, one brother, Ralph Russell Crosswhite of Anaheim, California, one sister, Wilma Crosswhite Robb of West Palm Beach, Florida, four grandsons, Linden Ray Evans, Lane Mark Evans, Lyle David Evans, John Randall Pierceall, seven great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Sharon Crosswhite of Nevada also survive. Funeral services will be Monday, July 29, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Dr. William C. Cox officiating. Burial will be at Moore Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Ministry of First Baptist Church in care of Evergreen Memorial Chapel, P.O. Mark Plumb
Died On June 24, 2002
Mark Douglas Plumb, 42, Kansas City, KS, passed away on June 24, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born April 25, 1960, in Englewood, CA, to William Plumb and Kathleen Doris Ryan Plumb. Mark was born and raised in California. He moved to Missouri 10 years ago to the Nevada-El Dorado Springs area. While living in Nevada, he worked for a short time for Nevada Mental Health. Then he moved to Kansas City, KS, where he has lived for seven years. He was a Program Director for Main Stream in Bonner Springs. He was a longtime member of NA & AA. He is survived by one daughter Shannon Plumb, Fayetteville, AR; stepfather, Don Jenkins, El Dorado Springs, MO; one sister, Linda Sousa, Chino, CA, and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen Jenkins. Memorials services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating.

Don E. Pollock

Don E. Pollock, the son of John Dale and Pearl Winans Pollock, was born August 19, 1954 in Van Wert County, Ohio and died November 10, 2002 in Asbury, Missouri at the age of 48 years, 2 months and 21 days. Mr. Pollock was a graduate of Spencerville High School, Spencerville, Ohio, Class of 1972. He was united in marriage to the former Cathy L. Siler on February 24, 1973 in Spencerville, Ohio. He was employed by 3M as an Advanced Technologist and Training Coordinator. He was a two time 3M Eagle Award winner and also had received the 3M Pyramid of Excellence Award. Mr. Pollock was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He attended the Presbyterian Church. He was a former Pack Master and Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. He was an avid NASCAR and race car enthusiast. Survivors include his wife, Cathy, of the home, three children, Brian and Josh, of the home, and Danielle of Columbia, Missouri, his mother, Pearl Pollock of Haines City, Florida, three brothers, Gary Pollock and his wife, Loretta, of Glencoe, Minnesota, John Pollock and his wife, Janie, of Ottawa, Kansas, and Robert M. Pollock of Bronx, New York, one twin sister, Debra Delano and her husband, Robert, of Charlotte, North Carolina, two nephews and four nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, John Dale Pollock and one nephew, Jason McMichael. Funeral services will be at 2:00 Thursday November 14, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Greg Ferree officiating. Burial will be at Moore Cemetery with full military honors. Al Porter, 51, Pittsburg, KS, formerly of Sheldon, MO passed away on Friday, March 1, 2001 in Pittsburg following a sudden illness. He was born November 15, 1950 in Pinkney, MI to Charles and Eva Porter. He was married to Bessie Clemons Porter who preceded him in death in 1972. Mr. Porter had lived in Sheldon, MO for 14 years before recently moving to Pittsburg, KS. He was employed at DeLange Seed House Inc., Gerard, KS for the past six months. Prior to that he had worked at Sheldon Seed Company for fourteen years. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Porter, Sheldon, MO, Travis Rasmussen, Quincy, IL, Dallas Porter, Diamond, MO; three daughters, Brandy Porter, Diamond, MO, Missy Stewart, Stanton, MI, Samantha Fallot, Pittsburg, KS; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Leroy Porter Stanton, MI, Robert Porter, Stanton, MI; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO with Rev. Paul Mooney officiating. Interment will follow in Tolson Cemetery, Sheldon, MO. Robert Prewitt

Robert Samuel Prewitt, 88, Walker, MO, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, MO. He was born July 21, 1914, in Walker, MO, to Samuel Prewitt and Betty Edwards Prewitt. He married Bonnie Adale Jones on June 21, 1942, in Butler, MO, and she survives of the home Bob served in the U. S. Navy for 2 years in the 1940's in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Walker Christian Church, Walker, MO. During his working life, he was a trackman and fireman for the MK&T Railroad. He also worked as a boiler room technician at Nevada State Hospital. He was an avid musician. Survivors in addition to his wife, Bonnie, include one daughter, Norma Campaneris, and one granddaughter, Carmen Campaneris, both of Overland Park, KS. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2003, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO. Friends may call now and until 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Janet Price
Died On October 23, 2002
Janet Gay Barton Price, 65, of Bethel, Pa., formerly of Nevada, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., from complications of a stroke suffered Oct. 8. Mrs. Price was the daughter of the late Allie and Alfred Barton of Nevada. She was born May 23, 1937, in St. Joseph, Mo. Janet attended Nevada schools, and was a 1955 graduate of Nevada High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., in 1959. Mrs. Price was a registered medical technologist on the laboratory staff at Reading Hospital in Reading, Pa., at the time of her death. She and her husband Robert E. Price, who survives, were the first couple to be married in the present United Methodist Church in Nevada on Oct. 22, 1961. Janet, who loved animals, was devoted to the family's beloved border collie Dexter and supported many organizations concerned with the humane treatment of animals. Also she was an avid Democrat. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Price is survived by one son Greg, Bethel, Pa.; several cousins including Allen Laflen, Bronaugh; Mrs. Barbara (Barton) Rawlings, Junction City, Kan.; David Barton, San Antonio, Texas, and Glenna (Harden) Zumwalt, Shawnee Mission, Kan. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at the Nevada United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Ralph Clark. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family suggests memorial contributions to your local humane society or charity of choice.

Geneva Rabon

Geneva Rabon, the daughter of George W. and Effie L. Dyer Belcher was born November 19, 1913 in Lebeck, Missouri and died May 13, 2002 at Christian Health Care of Nevada at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 24 days. She was united in marriage to Joseph H. Rabon on October 14, 1933 in Stockton, Missouri and he preceded her in death November 16, 1994. Mrs. Rabon was employed as a sales person at the former J.C. Penney's in Nevada, Missouri for over 30 years, until her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Nevada and a member of the Naomi Ruth Sunday School Class. She was past president of the Nevada Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and a member of the Missouri Pacific Boosters Club. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Scotten and her husband, Dwight of Nevada, Missouri, Jo Anne Banta and her husband, Steve of McKinney, Texas, three brothers, Orville Belcher of Warsaw, Missouri, Ralph Belcher of La Cygne, Kansas, Bill Belcher of Webb City, Missouri, two sisters, Wilma Kasal of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota and Ruby Guinn of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Floyd and Carl Belcher and one sister, Georgia Louise Belcher. Funeral services will be held Thursday May 16, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Dr. William C. Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. William Howard 'Willie' Rackley, Sr., 65, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday night, November 5, 2002, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, following a short illness. He was born June 14, 1937, in Bronaugh, MO, to James Martin Rackley, Sr. and Lillie A.R. Hartzfeld Rackley. He married Betty Sue Hill on March 22, 1956, in Nevada, MO. She preceded him in death on July 26, 1998. Mr. Rackley was born, grew up, and attended schools in Bronaugh, MO. He moved to Nevada at an early age where he has lived the remainder of his life. He worked at Key Industries in Nevada for a number of years. Survivors include one son, Willie H. Rackley, Jr.; one daughter, Loretta Sue Rackley, both of Nevada; three brothers, Charlie and Joe Rackley, both of Independence, MO, James Rackley, Wendyville, MO; three sisters, Neoma Clardy, Malvern, AR, and Audrey Jones and Lillie Weber, both of Independence, MO. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Paul and Ralph Rackley, and one sister, Erma Ewing. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Dr. William Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
