Mabel Agnes Rowland, 102, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday night, February 10, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO, following a brief illness. She was born April 13, 1899, in White Horse, OK, to Ransome O. Palmer and Cynthia S. Weeks Palmer. She married John W. Hall on January 23, 1924, in Osborne, KS, and he preceded her in death in July 1954. She later married John W. Rowland on May 13, 1960, in Nevada, MO, and he preceded her in death in November 1969. Mrs. Rowland was one of 10 children. She graduated from high school in Osborne, KS, and moved to Missouri in 1946. She was a member of the Church of God Holiness, Deerfield, MO. She was a homemaker and mother. Survivors include two sons, Claude William Hall, Harwood, MO, and Raymond 'Pete' Hall, Milo, MO; one daughter, Irene Pawley, Nevada, MO, nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl Palmer, Elkland, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters (one was a twin), three brothers, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Interment

Frances Royston

Frances Mildred Royston, 94, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday night, March 11, 2002, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, following a brief illness. She was born September 18, 1907, in Pattonsburg, MO, to John Sims Duerson and Artelia Caroline Lowrey Duerson. She married Durward Royston on February 17, 1926, in Gallatin, MO, and he preceded her in death on August 25, 1977. Mrs. Royston was a member of Heath Chapel Church in Northern Missouri since 1943. She moved from McFall, MO, in 1948, to Sheldon, MO. Then she came to Nevada in 1961. Mrs. Royston worked at Nevada State Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1972. She liked to cook and enjoyed her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Willodean Plymell (Harold), Hays, KS, and Carolyn Gordon (Jack), Nevada, MO; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Durward, she was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Paul Mooney officiating. Interment

Stephen J. Ruddick

Stephen J. Ruddick, the son of Loren Britt and Bessie Mae Brown Ruddick, was born May 14, 1920 in Crane, Missouri and died December 28, 2002 at Moore-Few Care Center at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 14 days. He was united in marriage to the former Betty L. Brown on September 3, 1947 in Nevada, Missouri and she preceded him in death December 31, 2000. Mr. Ruddick was employed as a custodian and bus driver for the Nevada R-5 School District until his retirement in 1986. He was a WWII Veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force in Panama. Mr. Ruddick was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and an Auxiliary Policeman for the Nevada Police Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church and helped found Nevada R.E.A.C.T. He was an avid C.B. Radio enthusiast, using the handle, "Missouri Mule." Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Smith and her husband, Richard, of Milo, Missouri, two grandchildren, Kimberly See and Michael Smith, one great grandchild, Andrew See and one half-brother, Charles Ellis of Crane, Missouri. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday January 2, 2003 at Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Dr. William C. Cox and Mr. John Nichols officiating. Marvin "Hap" Rutledge

Marvin Walker 'Hap' Rutledge, 86, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday morning, March 19, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a brief illness. He was born September 25, 1915, in Ketterman, MO, to James Rutledge and Myrta Frances Walker Rutledge. He married Lois A. Garrett on January 31, 1945, in Ft. Scott, KS, and she survives of the home. Mr. Rutledge attended the Green Valley School at Ketterman, MO. He was a member of the Horton Methodist Church. He served in the U. S. Army from 1942-1943 during WW II. Mr. Rutledge lived in Vernon County nearly all his life. He was a self-employed farmer and trucker for 35 years. He later managed the sawmill in Horton, MO, for 17 years, retiring in 1987. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Survivors in addition to his wife Lois include two sons, David Rutledge, Nevada, MO, and Gearald Rutledge, Peculiar, MO; three sisters, Inis May and Marcena True, both of Nevada, MO, and Helen Dean, Horton, MO, 10 grandchildren, Brenda Knutter, Eddie, Josalyn, Justin, Jerid, and Terrinie Rutledge, Rhonda Woods, Brian Jolley, Jourdin and Amy Burns; three great-grandchildren, KaSandura and David Knutter, and Neal Karr, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Walker Rutledge, in 1989, his mother and father; three brothers, Jim, Cyril, and Merle Rutledge, and one sister, Maysel Gafner. Ernest M. 'Ernie' Salter, 74, Chattanooga, TN, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the Life Care Center of East Ridge, East Ridge, TN. He was born July 6, 1928 in Detroit, MI to Claude M. Salter and Henrietta Lindenstruth Salter. He was married August 19, 1957 in New Castle, WY to Ann E. Eckley Salter. She preceded him in death March 12, 1992. Mr. Salter was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired teacher from Cottey College, Nevada, MO. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Linden Salter and husband Fabian Bedne, Nashville, TN, Martha Salter, Chattanooga, TN, Sara J. Salter and husband Sean Donnelly, Highland Ranch, CO; three grandchildren, Gabriel Bedne and Olivia Bedne, both of Nashville, TN and Benjamin G. Salter, Chattanooga, TN. Darrel Sander, the son of Herman and Esther Borkowski Sander was born June 6, 1935 in Manning, Iowa and died at his residence in Moundville at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 21 days. Mr. Sander was a graduate of Omaha Technical High School, Omaha, Nebraska in 1953. He was united in marriage to the former Joan Larimore on November 26, 1958 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Sander was employed as a pattern maker for Omaha Steel and then moved to Moundville in 1969. He was last employed as maintenance supervisor for the Nevada R-5 School District, retiring in 1997. Mr. Sander attended the Sylvan Dale Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Joan, of the home, two daughters, Joanel Friedli and her husband Ed of Centrailia, Missouri, Jill Clay and her husband, Tracy, of Nevada, Missouri, one son, Daroan Sander and his wife, Martha, of Nevada, Missouri, his mother, Esther Sander of Moundville, Missouri, and seven grandchildren. Two sisters, Karen Graser and her husband, Bob, of Papillion, Nebraska, Marlene Cihacek and her husband, Richard of Omaha, Nebraska, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Sander was preceded in death by his father, Herman and one brother, Leland Sander. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2003 at Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Mr. John Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Marvin Chapel Cemetery. Charles J. Schallert, 73, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, January 10, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. He was born February 19, 1928, at his home in St. Louis, MO, to Alexander Schallert and Agnes Kult Schallert. Charles had lived in the Nevada area since 1973, except for a brief period in 1978. He was a member of the Catholic faith. Survivors include one brother, Alexander Schallert, St. Louis, MO, area, and two sisters, Theresa Schallert and Cecelia Schallert, both of the St. Louis area. Jean E. Schlyer, 72, Butler, MO, formerly of Nevada, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 3, 2002, at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born September 3, 1929, in Ft. Hayes, KS, to Edward Otis Mayes and Mary Christenson Mayes. She married Virgil Thomas Schlyer on May 26, 1947, in Ft. Hayes, KS. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1997. Mrs. Schlyer was born and raised in Ft. Hayes, KS. She came to this area in 1951 and spent the remainder of her life here. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Schlyer is survived by her son, Bob Schlyer, Rich Hill, MO. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Schlyer; one brother, Dick Mayes; and two sisters, Leora Jones and Wilda Mayes. Ruby Leona Scott, 83, Wichita, KS, formerly of Nevada, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Wichita following a lengthy illness. She was born December 31, 1918, in Harwood, MO, to Roy O. Hill and Sarah Eleanor Murrah Hill. She was married to Leo W. Scott on June 1, 1941, in Nevada, MO, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Scott grew up in the Harwood/Schell City area. She was a graduate of Harwood High School in 1937. She lived most of her life in Nevada and Vernon County. She was an active member and Sunday School Teacher of Pine Street Baptist Church. She worked at Key Industries for 18 years. She then worked at Cottey College for five years until her retirement in 1983. She has lived the past two years with her daughter and son-in-law in Wichita. Survivors in addition to her husband Leo, include three daughters, Fay Tracy, Wichita, KS, Kay Brokob, Nevada, MO, and Helen Newton, Joplin, MO, 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Allen and Donald Carpenter, both of Kansas City, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Leon Carpenter, three brothers and two sisters. Zelma Shiflett

Zelma Lois Shiflett, age 90 of Nevada, passed away on November 8, 2002 at Christian Health Care of Nevada following a short illness. She was born on January 5, 1912 in Luther, Oklahoma to Ira A. Burch and Ada Gray Burch. On December 24, 1932 she was married in Lamar, MO to John H. Shiflett and he preceded her in death in 1990. Zelma came to the Boston, MO community in Barton County at the age of 12 where she lived nearly all her life. She has lived in Nevada the past 6 years. Zelma was a longtime member of the former Boston Methodist Church and attended the First Baptist Church in Nevada the past six years. Survivors include one son, Ralph R. Shiflett, Lamar, MO, one daughter, Florence M. Wilson, Nevada, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, John, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Wayne Shiflett, three brothers, seven sisters including a twin sister, and a great grandchild, Trenton Wilson. Alva 'A. J.' Jean Short, 55, Tulsa, OK passed away Saturday morning, July 20, 2002 at her residence following an illness of several months. She was born February 20, 1947 in Exeter, CA. She was married August 27, 1990 in Tulsa, OK to William Eugene Short. He preceded her in death August 23, 2001. She was born in CA, but grew up in Kansas City, MO. She worked for many years as a property manager for Lincoln Property Management. She lived for a number of years in Tulsa, OK as well as San Antonio, TX and spent the last few months in Tulsa, OK. She was a member of the Tulsa and San Antonio Dart Associations and a member of the Accredited Resident Management Association. Survivors include five children: Monica Wright, Sheldon, MO, Deana Williams, Jacksonville, FL, Julie Ross, Tulsa, OK, James Downey Jr., Jacksonville, FL, Rhonda Murphy, Tulsa, OK: nine grandchildren; parents, Leland and Sylvia Cady, Sheldon, MO; two brothers, James Cady, Topeka, KS, Thomas Cady, Sheldon, MO. Albert Russell Rhyne, 77, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born December 18, 1925, in 76, Missouri, to Luther Earl Rhyne and Nancy Ann Mahaney Rhyne. He married Norma June Keyes on July 3, 1945, in Springfield, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Rhyne was born in 76, MO, and grew up in Springfield, MO, the youngest of several children. He graduated from Central High School, Springfield, MO, in 1944. Russell entered the Army in June 1944 and fought in Germany in the Battle of the Bulge, was captured and liberated a few months later. He worked for Fox Midwest Theater Chain for 17 years including managing the Fox Theaters in Nevada and Ft. Scott, KS. He retired as Postmaster of the Walker Post Office. He has lived in Nevada, MO, about 46 years. He was a past president of Walker Lions Club, an active member of the United Methodist Church, Nevada, the NARF (National Association of Retired Federal Employees), and past member of the Nevada Rotary Club. Survivors in addition to his wife Norma of 58 years, include one son, Russell K. Rhyne, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Mary Katherene Rhyne Van Mater, five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. She was born May 2, 1912, in Lexington, OK, to Willis Edgar French and Nellie Mae Murphy French. She married Harvey Sneed in 1931. She married William R. Sides on February 23, 1970, in Wichita Falls, TX, and he survives of the home. Edna grew up in the Lexington area. She was a member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church, Lexington, OK. She and her husband William , have lived in the Bellamy, MO, area since 1971. Survivors in addition to her husband William, include three sons, Robert E. Sneed, Sacramento, CA, Kenneth L. Sneed and Clifford E. Sneed, both of Sheldon, MO; one daughter, LaDora M. Mead, Nevada, MO; two stepsons, Colonel William O. Sides, Riverview, FL, and David E. Sides, Norman, OK, 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Haynes. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clifford and Arthur French, and one sister, Celia Steele. Howard E. Slates, 75, Nevada, MO, formerly of Sheldon, MO, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 11, 1927, in rural Milo, MO, to Roy Slates and Gladys Marie Harper Slates. He married Marjorie E. Rohrbacker on February 21, 1949, in Nevada, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Slates grew up in Vernon and Barton Counties. He attended Lamar schools and graduated from Lamar High School. He served in the Army as a paratrooper near the end of WWII. From 1951-1993 he lived in Northern California and Southern Oregon where he worked in farming. He and his wife have been back in the Sheldon area the past 3' years. Survivors in addition to his wife, Marjorie, include one son, Danny Slates, Golden Valley, AZ; two daughters, Helen Mulford, Golden Valley, AZ, and Carolyn Lyman, Tulelake, CA, 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Slates, Weed, CA, and Loyd G. Fenton, Springfield, MO; two sisters, Blanch Tracey, Nevada, MO, and Beulah Hemphill, Lamar, MO; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joyce Smith, 79, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday January 2, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born July 28, 1923, in La Crosse, KS, to Preston McKinley Miller and Dolly Schwab Miller. She married Robert James Smith on May 1, 1948, in Hayes, KS. He preceded her in death on October 21, 1991. Mrs. Smith was born and raised in La Crosse, KS, and grew up there. She graduated from La Crosse High School in 1942. She and her husband came to Nevada in 1950 and she has lived here ever since. She worked at Nevada State Hospital for 30 years, retiring as a nursing instructor in 1985. Joyce was a member of the United Methodist Church, Nevada Eagles Lodge, and Nevada Regional Medical Center Women's Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Debra Headley Smith, Nevada, MO, and Kathy Jadlot, St. Louis, MO; three grandchildren, Captain Travis Robert Jadlot, Ft. Blanche Pauline Smith,79, Joplin, MO, formerly of Nevada, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 02, 2002 at National Health Care, Joplin, MO following a lengthy illness. She was born October 23, 1922 in Minot, ND to the late Iva Lewis Noyes and Dolly Lorraine Graves Noyes. She was married July 30, 1938 in Nevada, MO to Clarence Smith. He preceded her in death July 5, 1970. Mrs. Smith was raised in Minnesota. She came to this area after her marriage and spent the remainder of her life here. She worked for 23 years as a psychiatric aid at the Nevada State Hospital retiring in 1977. She was an avid quilter. Survivors include one son, Robert L. Smith, Nevada, MO; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth McCullick, El Dorado Springs, MO, Iva Thompson, Eugene, OR. Arthur Benjamin Smith, 87, Schell City, MO, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2003, nearby his home in Schell City following a brief illness. He was born February 18, 1916, in Providence, RI, to Alfred Ernest Smith and Ruth Belle Lanell Smith. He married Mary Elizabeth Smith on February 18, 1942, in Providence, RI. She preceded him in death on February 5, 2003. Arthur was born and raised in Rhode Island and spent most of his youth there. He came to Vernon County following his marriage and spent the remainder of his life here. Survivors include three sons, Art Smith, Wichita, KS, Gary Smith, Millinocket, ME, and Bruce Smith, Harrison, AR; two daughters, Grace Miller, El Dorado Springs, MO, and Ruth Cooper, Wheaton, MO, 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera Souza, Schell City, MO, and two brothers, Earnest and Alvin Smith. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment
will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Walker, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 5-6:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
