Virginia Sue Smith, 72, Nevada, MO, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a short illness. She was born October 10, 1930, in Nevada, MO, to Robert F. Rogers and Maggie Mabel Dahmer Rogers. She married Ray G. Smith on June 24, 1973, in Nevada, MO, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Smith lived her entire lifetime in Vernon County. She attended Maple Dale School in Vernon County and Nevada High School. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Eagles Lodge, American Legion and V. F. W. Women's Auxiliaries. She spent her whole life as a homemaker. Survivors in addition to her husband, Ray, include one stepdaughter, Linda Dungan and her husband, Louis, Nevada, MO; one step-granddaughter, Angie Newton and her husband, Casey, Nevada; one step-grandson, Brennon Dungan and wife, Caroline, St. Charles, MO; one step-great-granddaughter, Macey Newton, Nevada, MO; one brother, Robert Rogers, Columbus, KS; one sister, Ruth Simon, Colorado Springs, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Loyd W. and William E. Rogers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Daisy Smith

Daisy Lenora Smith, age 86 of Nevada, passed away Saturday morning, November 23, 2002 at the Joe Clark Residential Care in Nevada, following a lengthy illness. She was born September 13, 1916, in Ford County, Kansas, to Mille A. Kirkpatrick and Flossie T. Butcher Kirkpatrick. She was married to Louie E. Smith on June 12, 1936, in Sedan, KS and he preceded her in death on May 24, 1990. Mrs. Smith was a Methodist and a member of U.M.W. at United Methodist Church of Nevada, MO. She was born and raised in Kansas and spent the majority of her life near Sedan, KS. She moved to Nevada in 1976 and has resided here since. She worked for many years as a beautician. Daisy also enjoyed bowling, square dancing and gardening. Survivors include one son, Wilbur Smith, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Sonnia K. Weikel, Holiday Island, Arkansas, seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Allen Kirkpatrick, Havana, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers Funeral Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Hall officiating. Mary Elizabeth Smith, 86, Schell City, MO, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born February 18, 1916, in Lincoln, RI, to Arthur G. Smith and Bessie Olivia Parson Smith. She married Arthur B. Smith on February 18, 1942, in Providence, RI. He survives of the home in Schell City, MO. Mrs. Smith grew up in Lincoln, RI. She came to Schell City in 1942 and has lived in Vernon County ever since. She worked for the Missouri Department of Employment Security Office in Nevada for 25 years, retiring in 1985. Survivors in addition to her husband, Arthur, include three sons, Art Smith, Wichita, KS, Gary Smith, Millinocket, ME, and Bruce Smith, Harrison, AR; two daughters, Grace Miller, El Dorado Springs, MO, and Ruth Cooper, Wheaton, MO, 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn Samson, Cranston, RI, Rose Johnson, Porterville, CA, Betty Canconstanteneau, Providence, RI, and Josephine Fassel, Nevada, and one brother, Edward 'Eddie' Smith, Andrews, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charley Smith of Vero Beach, FL, in June 1999. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Paul Mooney officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Walker, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home and the family will receive friends Sunday 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Donald Snyder

Donald Snyder passed away Thursday, December 20, 2001, at his home in Sheldon, MO. He is survived by one brother, Paul Snyder, Nevada, MO, and one sister, Wanda Snyder Lehman, Nevada, MO. Paul Snyder
Died On November 6, 2002
Paul Boyd Snyder age 68 of Nevada, formerly of Montevallo, died Wednesday evening November 6, 2002 at Christian Health Care of Nevada following an illness of several months. Paul was born on December 5, 1933 in rural El Dorado Springs in eastern Vernon County to Avard B. Snyder and Alice E. Stockstill Snyder. On August 13, 1955 he was married to Betty J.Garber and she survives of the home in Nevada. Paul grew up in the El Dorado Springs area and attended El Dorado Springs High School. At the age of 17 he entered the United States Navy where he served during the Korean Conflict. After nearly four years in the Navy, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for sixteen years attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1972 he began teaching at the Lamar High School as an electronics teacher. He taught for twenty years in Lamar until his retirement in 1992. Paul was a deacon and 30-year member of the Montevallo Baptist Church and currently a Deacon and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada. Survivors in addition to his wife Betty include two daughters, Paula Hacker, Diamond, MO, and Kelly Snyder, Nevada, MO; two sons, David Snyder, Edgewood, NM and Kevin Snyder, Linden, NC; thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; one sister Wanda Lehman, Nevada, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Don Snyder. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at the Montevallo Baptist Church, with John Nichols officiating. Services are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the Calvary Christian School , 113 W. Arch, Nevada, MO.

Melanie Dawn Somers, twin sister, was born March 8, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, and passed away Friday, March 8, 2002, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO. Survivors include their parents, John R. Somers II and Stacy L. Somers, of the home; two sisters, Amanda Maxwell and Makenna Maxwell, both of the home; maternal grandmother, Corinne Bender, Walker, MO; maternal grandfather, Steve Allgood and his wife Betty, Eddyville, IA; and paternal grandparents, John Somers, Sr. and Marcia Somers, Nevada, MO. Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2002, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, with Roger Todd, Pastor, officiating. Robb Sewell was the soloist. Arrangements were by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Robert Sprenkle

Robert E. Sprenkle, age 86 of Nevada, passed away Tuesday January 15, 2002 at the Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar, MO following a brief illness. He was born on August 10, 1915 in Neosho, MO to Charles Edward Sprenkle and Hazel Thomas Sprenkle. On August 13, 1935 he was married to Lillie Ellen Murphy in Neosho, MO and she preceded him in death in 1999. Robert came to Vernon County in 1942 where he has live off and on since that time. He spent most of his working life as a dairy farmer and also did carpentry work. He is survived by two sons Richard E. 'Ed' Sprenkle, of Stockton, MO and Charles Leroy Sprenkle of Nevada, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one brother, Charles Sprenkle of Lamar, and one sister, Fannie Hancock of Carthage, MO. In addition to his wife Lillie, he was preceded in death by one daughter Mary Ann Lolly and one son Daniel C. Sprenkle. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday January 19, 2002 at Ferry Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. Friends may call from now until the hour of service and the family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home. Charles Leroy Sprenkle

Charles Leroy Sprenkle, 50, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born February 15, 1953, in Nevada, MO, to Robert Edward Sprenkle and Lillie Ellen Murphy Sprenkle. Leroy was born in Nevada and raised in Neosho, MO, and graduated from Neosho High School. He made his living as a roofer. He returned to Nevada in 1988 and spent the remainder of his life here. Survivors include two sons, Scott Sprenkle, Seneca, MO, and Rob Sprenkle, Texas; two daughters, Holly Sprenkle, Carthage, MO, and Shelby Sprenkle, Sheldon, MO, four grandchildren, and one brother, Ed Sprenkle, Stockton, MO. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ann Lolley, and one brother, Daniel Sprenkle. The family receives friends 7:00-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Graveside committal services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, with Rev. Bob Martin officiating. Karl Streiner
Died On April 20, 2002
Karl F. Streiner, 77, Nevada, Mo, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 20, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following an illness of several months. He was born October 18, 1924, in McFarland, KS, to Charles George Streiner and Iva Sarah Turley Streiner. He married Evelyn Jodene Gire on October 18, 1958, in Moundville, MO, and she preceded him in death in 1991. Karl grew up in Kansas. He came to Nevada in the late 40's with his family. He served in the Army from 1950-1952 in Korea. He was a member of the Church of The Nazarene, Nevada, MO. He drove for GI cab in Nevada for a number of years. He had also worked for 20 years at Nevada City Hospital until his retirement in 1991. Survivors include one daughter, Jan Parrish, Nevada, MO; one sister, Arlene Reynolds, Columbus, KS, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Jodene, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dennis and Richard Streiner, and one sister, Roberta Whitworth. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Mike Satterlee officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery. Raymond Stump

Raymond Lee Stump, 24, Sheldon, MO passed away at his residence Friday morning, March 22, 2002. He was born July 23, 1977 in Nevada, MO to Glen and Constance Stump, who survive of the home. Raymond was raised in the Sheldon area and spent virtually his entire life there. He was employed by O'Sullivan Industries, Lamar, MO. He was an avid hunter. Along with his parents, survivors include one brother, Derald Neugebauer, U. S. military serving in Egypt; one sister, Joy Marbough, Oronogo, MO; maternal grandparents, Roderick and Louise Cline, Carthage, MO; five nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO with Shannon Workman and Rev. Jim McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Monday and until the time of service at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.

Lawrence Swan

Lawrence O. Swan, 88, Nevada, MO passed away Saturday evening, August 31, 2002, at the Terrace Apartments of Christian Health Care in Nevada following a brief illness. He was born July 12, 1914 in Vernon County, MO to the late Oscar Swan and Nina Alice McCoy Swan. He was married May 17, 1941 in Nevada, MO to Francis Juanita Birch Swan. She preceded him in death April 19, 1986. Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Pike and her husband Tandy A., Sheldon, MO, Linda Pike and her husband Tony L., Nevada, MO; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Swan, Nevada, MO, Neale Swan, Nevada, MO, Gordon Swan, Independence, MO; two sisters, Fern Pratt, Cut 'N' Shoot, TX, Eleanor Olson, Nevada, MO; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one son, Robert Lawrence Swan. Mr. Swan was a lifelong resident of Vernon County. He grew up in the Deerfield area and attended the Durham school through the eighth grade. He worked for the railroad for several years during WW II. He farmed most of his life and worked for 15 years for Ben Robinson. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield, MO with Reverend Wes Anderson officiating. Friends may call from now and until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials may be made to Nevada Hospice in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Anne Swartz

Anne Marie Swartz, 81, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 19, 2002, at the Barone Alzheimer Care Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. She was born October 22, 1920, in Ft. Scott, KS, to Jess Swafford and Rose Balocca Swafford. She married Louis V. Swartz on June 24, 1994, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Swartz was born and raised in Ft. Scott, KS. She lived in Nevada the past 10 years after coming to Nevada from Nashville, TN. Survivors in addition to her husband Louis, include two sons, Tom Baer, St. Petersburg, FL., and John Baer, Washington D. C.: two daughters, Sue Martinez, Savannah, GA, and Nancy Cohen, Richmond, VA. Committal services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Alene Tally

Alene Tally, 92, formerly of Nevada, MO and Goodland, KS, passed away Tuesday March 11, 2003 in Laguna Hills, CA following a short illness. She was born November 5, 1910 in Bethany, MO to Robert Attebery and Elsie May Van Meter Attebery. She was married April 7, 1935 in Rockville, MO to Buel E. Tally. He preceded her in death August 18, 1980. Mrs. Tally taught school for six years. She was a homemaker and later was employed in the Dietary Department at Nevada City Hospital for 17 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Nevada, MO. She spent most of her life in Nevada, MO where she and her husband operated a dairy farm and owned the Tally Trailer Court for many years. After the death of her husband, Buel, she moved to Goodland, KS to be near her daughter and family. Then the family moved to California, so she spent her last four years in Laguna Hills, CA where she enjoyed her daughter, grandchildren and traveling. Survivors include one daughter, BuElla True, Laguna Hills, CA: two grandsons, Roy A. True III, the state of TX, Alan L. True, the state of CA; five great-grandchildren, Blaze, Dillon, Ciarra Alene, Brandon and Alan Lynn True Jr. one sister Mrs. Finis (LaMerna) Wood, Nevada, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse and three brothers, Amel, Vincil and Vaughn Attebery. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO. Friends may call between 12:00 noon on Sunday and 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ferry Funeral Home. Ida Taylor

Ida Louise Taylor, 89, Nevada, MO passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 18, 2002 at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born December 29, 1912 in Sheldon, MO to the late John Moore and Martha Ellen Gonterman Moore. She was married March 11, 1938 in Lamar, MO to Walter D. Taylor. He preceded her in death June 7, 1978. Mrs. Taylor and her family moved to Nevada from Lamar, MO in 1954. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Taylor worked as an aide in Tate's Nursing Home and at Nevada Manor for several years. She loved taking care of others and would invite people into her home and cook for them. One of her hobbies that she enjoyed was fishing. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Barker and husband Delmar, El Dorado Springs, MO, Betty L. Jadlow and husband Paul, Nevada, MO; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beulah Watkins, Sheldon, MO, Ruth Ragel, State of CA, Velma Hall, Kansas City, KS. Along with her parents and spouse, one son, Johnnie Wayne Taylor and one stepson, Allen Dale Taylor preceded her in death. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2002 at Milster Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Robert Beaver and Larry Berry officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, MO. Virginia Mae Thomas, 87, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2003, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada. She was born on March 22, 1915, in Nevada MO, to Commodore Perry Armstrong and Mabel Phillips Armstrong. She lived the majority of her life in Nevada with the exception of 12 years spent in Moundville, MO. She married Raymond Shindler on August 13, 1932. He preceded her in death on December 2, 1972. She later married L. B. Thomas on September 21, 1974. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1981. She was a housewife and mother and worked for a time at Nevada High School Cafeteria. She was a member of the Nevada Nazarene Church attended regularly as long as health permitted. Virginia loved her family and friends very much. Survivors include one son, Ernest Shindler and his wife, Elaine, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Mrs. Dean (Pat) Culbertson, Nevada, MO; one daughter-in-law, Linda Shindler, Dongying City, China; two brothers, Arthur Armstrong, Milo, MO, and Robert Armstrong, Tacoma, WA; two sisters-in-law, Vera Oxford, Parsons, KS, and Edith Armstrong, Milo, MO; several nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren, Mike Shindler, Fulton, MO, Karen Threlkeld, Cairo, MO, Mark Shindler, Republic, MO, Scott Culbertson, Shawnee, KS, Kenny Culbertson, Pawnee, OK, Randy Culbertson, Mapleton, KS, Shelia Farley, Redlands, CA, and Rob Shindler, Geronimo, OK; seven great-grandchildren, Laci Culbertson, Ft. Scott, KS, Kena Culbertson, Pawnee, OK, Morgan Shindler and Tiffany Porter, Fulton, MO, Alex, Zeke, and Lane Threlkeld, Cairo, MO; four stepchildren, Leon Thomas and his wife, Marilyn, Moundville, MO, Colin Thomas and his wife, Betsy, Warrenton, VA, Gary Thomas and his wife, Bridgeville, DE, and Sue Mooneyhan, Virginia Beach, VA; also numerous step-grandchildren, including Linda Douglas, Nevada, MO, and Nancy Pitts, Milo, MO, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by one son, Gary Shindler, her parents; five brothers, Albert, Clarence, Harvey, Raymond, and Allison Armstrong; one sister, Lear Viola; a granddaughter, Cynthia Lynn Culbertson, and one son-in-law, Dean Culbertson. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2003, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada, MO. Mildred Thomas

Mildred Maxine Thomas, 83, Nevada, MO passed away Friday evening, October 18, 2002 at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada following a brief illness. She was born February 16, 1919 in the state of Illinois to the late Orel Spencer and Elsie Imo Duzenberry Spencer. She was married in November 14, 1936 in Nevada, MO to Charles Thomas. He preceded her in death in 1965. Mrs. Thomas came to Vernon County as a child and spent the remainder of her life here. She graduated from Walker High School. She was a homemaker and in later years worked at the Nevada State Hospital as a psychiatric aide for 15 years. She was involved in the 4H for many years. She was a member of the Berea Christian Church. Survivors include two sons, Charles Orel Thomas, Kansas City, MO, Dennis Thomas, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Connie Garren, Nevada, MO; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, spouse, one daughter, Marilyn Smith, three sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. Friends may call from now and until the time of service at Ferry Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.. The family suggests memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

June L. Tummons, 60, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Christian Health Care in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born June 18, 1942, in Camdenton, MO, to Hartrell Raymond and Delila Carroll. She married Bonnie Tummons on April 29, 1962, in Camdenton, MO, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Tummons was born and raised in Camdenton. Following marriage she lived in a number of locals in Missouri. Before getting in Nevada in 1972, where she spent the remainder of her life, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Nevada First Assembly of God and helped with the women's ministry at the church. Survivors in addition to her husband, Bonnie of the home, include one brother, Darrell Lee Carroll, two sisters, Lucille Carroll, Camdenton, MO, and Wilda Mae High, Springfield, MO. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, with Rev. Paul Leasor officiating. Friends may call now and until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, and the family receives friends 7:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family in care of Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada, MO 64772.
