George A. Balik
George A. Balik died Thursday, November 13, 2003 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco, Iowa.
Services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Monday November 17, 2003 at the Notre Dame Parish - Assumption Worship Center, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco. Friends may call at the Conway Funeral Home in Protivin from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday and one hour prior to the services on Monday at the church. There will be a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. and a Scripture Service at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born on April 23, 1925 near Jackson Junction, Iowa, the son of Louis and Helen (Puffer) Balik. He attended school in Spillville through the 8th grade. George worked for the railroad and also Balik Implement prior to his marriage.
On October 5, 1948 he was united in marriage to Lorraine Adamec at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin, Iowa.
George farmed in New Oregon Township in Howard County and was also an Archer Oil Dealer. In his spare time he liked fishing, polka music, and getting to spend time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Catholic Workmen and the Assumption Worship Center.
He is survived by two daughters: Bernadette (James) Mauer of Elba, MN, Bonnie (Larry) Burr of Cresco, IA, two sons: Merlin (Allison) and Marty (Karen) Balik of Cresco, IA, tweleve grandchildren: Paul Mauer, Laurie Schweitzer, Hollie Mauer, Israel, Jacob, Benjamin, Sarah, Kayshia, Kelsie, Kyle, and Kendra Balik, and Katie Burr and one great grandson: Devon Mauer; two brothers: Louis of Cresco, IA and Jim of Waterloo, IA; three sisters: Emilie Moudry of Calmar, IA, Lorraine Bily of Omaha, NE, and Anna Mae Weist of Richardson, TX.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorraine in 1976, one brother: Edward, and two sisters: Genevieve Pesek and Elizabeth in infancy.

George Lammers, age 74, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Elma, Iowa, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 in Dayton, Ohio of natural causes.
George was born November 14, 1927 in Elma, Iowa, He married Patricia Determan on June 21, 1952. He was also a WWII Army veteran.
He is survived by his six children, Barbara Loe of Stillwater, MN, Ted of Dayton, Ohio, Sue Richeson of Waxhaw, NC, John of Dayton, Ohio, Tom of Columbus, Ohio, and Ruth Lammers of Palatine, IL; and 8 grandchildren,
and his sister Terrie Kahn of Mason City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Patricia; his parents: Herm and Anna Mae Lammers; two brothers: Jack and David.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, Iowa. Visitation is from 1 P.M. until Services on Saturday, at the Church in Elma, Iowa. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Elma.

George Frank Marhoul
Funeral Services are being held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 23, 2005 at Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Rev. Richard J. Ament is officiating. Visitation is being held at the Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday and at the church an hour prior to the services on Friday. The family will place the pall on the casket at the entrance of the church and process into the church singing "Be Not Afraid". Organist is Suzanne Ollendick and the Cantor is Joe Wacha. The gifts will be carried to the Altar while singing "Amazing Grace" by Skyler, Shania, Ashley and Rachel. The Communion Song will be "On Eagle's Wings". The Commendation and Blessing will be done while the congregation is singing the "Song of Farewell". The recessional song will be "How Great Thou Art. "
George Frank Marhoul was born June 7, 1930 at Gridley, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Julia (Vlk) Marhoul. George attended school in Gridley until 1941 when his family moved to northeast Iowa and he finished his education in Ridgeway, Iowa. Following his schooling, George stayed at home to help with the farming.
On May 20, 1957, George was united in marriage to Loretta Houdek at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. To this union six children were born, Gary, Susan, Linda, Thomas, Kathy, and Julie. They made their home on a farm outside of Cresco, then moved to a farm outside of Ridgeway. George worked road construction while living on the farm. They later moved into Ridgeway. Loretta died June 17, 1983.
On November 16, 1985, George was united in marriage to Juliet Albertson Schnitzler at Cresco. They lived in Ridgeway after their marriage, and they moved to Protivin in 1996. About 1 1/2 years later they moved into Cresco.
George enjoyed listening to old time music, watching football and basketball, but especially enjoyed going fishing with his grandson. He was an exemplary father and grandfather and could not spend enough time with his family.
George is survived by his wife:Juliet of Cresco, six children:Gary Marhoul (Pat Clark) of Menominee, WI, Susan (Randy) Russell of Ridgeway, IA, Linda Lacey of Fountain, MN, Thomas (Barb)Marhoul of Ridgeway, IA, Kathy (John) Blumer of Long Grove, IA, and Julie (Jeff) Lewison of Rochester, MN; four step children:Janice Prochaska of Iowa City, IA, Larry (Susan) Schnitzler of Egan, MN, Gary (Cindy) Schnitzler of Decorah, IA, and Edith (Mark) Dawley of Decorah, IA; 11 grandchildren:Steve and Jessica Hughes, Rachel Russell, Noah Lacey, Ashley and Kori Blumer, Skyler and Shania Lewison, Marquetta, Heather and Fannie Clark; nine step grandchildren:Jolanda and Julie Prochaska, Jacob and Luke Schnitzler, Catina, Caleb and Heidi Schnitzler, Joey and Jarrod Dawley;16 step great grandchildren:Alex, Gabriella, Trevor, Amanda, Matthew, Brett, Lucas, Collin, Allysa, Amanda, Kevin, Kaitlyn, Hannah, Garrett, Brady, and Chandler.

George Harold Peck
George Peck, of Ossian, IA, died Monday, February 13, 2006 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, IA. He was 86 years of age.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2006 from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Schmitz Funeral Home, and from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Friday at the church. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday at the Ossian Lutheran Church with Pastor, Kris Snyder officiating. Elaine Knutson will be organist and accompany Don DiLaura who will sing, "On Eagle's Wings", and the congregation who will sing, "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "This is My Father's World". Honorary bearers will be: Victor Halverson, Irvin Fosaaen, Gervase Hanken, Paul Heying, Howard Brechtel, Art Hemesath and Kermit Anfinson. George Harold Peck was born on January 18, 1920, on the family farm northeast of Ossian, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the Ossian Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 2:00 P. M Ossian Lutheran Church. Pastor Kris Snyder will officiate. Organist will be Elaine Knutson and will accompany Don DiLaura who will sing "On Eagle's Wings", and the congregation who will sing "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "This is My Father's World". Honorary Bearers will be Victor Halverson, Irvin Fosaaen, Gervase Hanken, Paul Heying, Howard Brechtel, Art Hemesath, and Kermit Anfinson. Casket Bearers will be: Dave Olson, Kelly Peck, Bill Green, Don Hogenson, Dale Schildmeyer, and Gregg Jorgenson. Burial will be in Springfield Lutheran Cemetery, rural Decorah.
George attended the Broghammer country school and graduated from the Ossian High School in 1937.
On June 19, 1943, George was united in marriage to Ethel Nerlie at the Ossian Lutheran Parsonage. They were blessed with the birth of three daughters: Janice, Gloria and Nancy. George farmed his entire life and for 49 of those years, he sold Pioneer Seed Corn. He was a life time member of the Ossian Lutheran Church, served on the church council, and served as the church’s delegate to the Aase Haugen Home.
George enjoyed playing cards, volunteering, fishing up north and visiting. He often said that “a stranger is a friend I haven’t met. ”He enjoyed being active in his community and church and for several years served on the South Winneshiek School Board. He was a member of both the South Winneshiek and the Silver Springs Country Clubs.
George is survived by his daughters: Janice (Dave) Siefken, Ossian, Gloria (Eric Forsberg) Peck of Golden Valley, MN; and Nancy (Rob) Bolson of Decorah, three grandchildren: Bryant (Jami) Siefken, Kevin (Trena) Siefken and Alexis Olson; four great grandchildren: Joshua and Hannah Siefken and Cory and Nathan Siefken; and a special friend, Mary Larson. He is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Danny Lien of Decorah and brothers-in-law, Robert Lang, of Flowery Branch, GA and Jerry Reichow of Sante Fe, NM.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ethel, on November 10, 2001; two brothers: Walter and Eldo and four sisters: Viola Hellum, Hazel Zimmerman, Mabel Johnson and Mildred Hellum.

Georgina Mae [Sobolik] Huinker
Georgina Huinker, 86, originally of rural Ridgeway, passed away after a long illness Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, IA. Funeral Services are being held at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 3, 2005 with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Trinity Cemetery.
The family will place the pall at the entrance of the church and will process into the church singing “You Are Mine”, the song for the preparation of gifts will be “ Jesus Christ, Bread of Life”, gifts will be carried by Roger Huinker and Marilyn Kuennen. The communion song will be “Precious Lord Take My Hand” and the meditation song will be “Hail Mary, O Gentle Woman” both sung by Miriam Humpal. The recessional song will be “On Eagle’s Wings”. The organist is going to be Marlene Pecinovsky. Eucharist Ministers will be Dennis and Alberta Huinker and Bill Berka. Casket Bearers will be the seven grandchildren. Readers will be: Andy Kuennen, Brian Huinker, Tara Huinker and Maria Kuennen.
Georgina Mae Sobolik was born September 20, 1919, the daughter of James and Louise (Markovetz) Sobolik of rural Ridgeway, IA. She attended rural schools and Cresco High School. She made her home on the farm she was born, helping her parents with the farming. On June 10, 1946, she married Paul J. Huinker at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA ant they continued farming together on her home farm. To this union, two children were born: Marilyn and Roger. Her husband Paul passed away on January 24, 1997. After his death she continued to make her home on the farm.
Georgina was a member of Holy Trinity Church, the Rosary Society, the Protivin Senior Citizens, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sunshine Homemakers Farm Bureau Club. She was also a trustee of the Western Fraternal Life Association #85 of Protivin, Iowa. While still in her own home, she enjoyed mowing her lawn, playing cards, daily phone conversations with her cousin, Bessie, and the companionship of her dog, Susie. She always enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Since July 2004, Georgina had made her home at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, where she appreciated the good care and visits from family and friends.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Kuennen and her husband, Adrian of Fort Atkinson; one son, Roger and his wife, Pat (Grady) Huinker of Decorah; seven grandchildren:Andy (Mindy) Kuennen of West Des Moines, Nick (Laura) Kuennen of Center Point, Maria Kuennen of Marshalltown, and Dennis Kuennen of Cedar Falls, Brian (Amanda) Huinker of Decorah, Beth (Chris Hoden) of Moline IL and Tara Huinker of Decorah. Also surviving is one great-grandchild, Ryan Andrew Kuennen of West Des Moines.
Her parents and her husband preceded her in death.

Gertrude Ann Tlusty
Gertrude Tlusty died Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at the Evans Memorial Home where she has made her home for the past three weeks. She was 86 years of age.
Services for Gertrude Tlusty of Cresco, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Conway Funeral Home in Protivin from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday and for one hour before the services on Thursday. There will be a Scripture Service at 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday. Rev. David M. Beckman will officiate. The family will place the pall, servers will be: Clarissa and Riley Brincks, readers will be: Donna Tlusty and Cheryl Marsh, gifts will be carried by Ron Tlusty and Diane Brincks, Eucharist Minister will be Rita Kovarik, the organist is Marlene Pecinovsky and the cantor is Miriam Humpal. Casket Bearers are: Kenny, Duane and Gary Tlusty, Jim, Dan and Arnie Brincks.
Gertrude Ann Tlusty was born on June 1, 1919 in Howard County, northwest of Protivin, Iowa, the daughter of Albert F. and Mary S. (Chipera) Kacher. She was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she remained a member her entire lifeShe attended the rural school across the field from her home. Following her education, she remained at home to help her mother around the farm.
On June 1, 1937, Gertrude was united in marriage to James J. Tlusty in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin. Following their marriage, she began keeping house and raising their family on the Kacher home farm. The farm has been in the family since it was homesteaded about 130 years ago. Following Jim’s death in 1967, Gertrude moved into Cresco and began taking care of her parents until their deaths, four days apart in 1980. Gertrude continued to be a care giver, to the extent that she would continue driving friends to different events, and then thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren in later years
Gertrude was a member of the Holy Trinity Church, the Holy Trinity Rosary Society, many different card clubs, and the Senior Citizens. When not taking care of her garden, canning pickles, or growing pumpkins, she was taking care of her family. She never tired of having her grandchildren or great grandchildren around.
She is survived by her two children and their spouses: Ronald (Geraldine) living on her home farm, Diane (Parnell) Brincks of Waucoma, IA; eight grandchildren: Kenny (Connie) Tlusty, Donna Tlusty, Cheryl (Gary) Marsh, Duane (Kristi) Tlusty and Gary Tlusty; Jim (Pam) Brincks, Dan (Kelly) Brincks, and Arnie (Brenda) Brincks; eleven great grandchildren: Brittany and Megan Tlusty, Will, Walker and Josie Marsh; Clarissa, Collin; Riley and Shaylee; and Anja and Andrew Brincks.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, James, and her parents.

John Tlusty
John Tlusty died Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa where he has lived for almost a year. He was 85 years of age.
John Tlusty was born in Howard County, Iowa near Lourdes, on March 6, 1919 the son of Joseph and Antonia (Benedict) Tlusty. He attended the rural school near his home and came into Cresco to graduate from the Cresco High School. Following his education John started working in a grocery store.
On October 16, 1941 John was united in marriage to Marcella Moudry at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, Iowa. They made their home in Cresco. John was inducted into the United States Army on January 8, 1942 at Ft. Des Moines, IA. He served in the Aviation Signal Corps in the European Theatre from December 1943 until January 1946. He was discharged on January 9, 1946 at Camp Grant, IL.
After John returned from the service, he returned to working at the grocery store. He worked for various stores in Cresco and eventually started working for the Postal Service.
John worked for the Cresco Post Office for 27 years before he retired.
John had a deep love for music and could play any instrument. He played with various bands, played on the radio, played for many dances and activities. Even after John retired he enjoyed playing as a one man band and entertained many. He donated his time to go to the rest homes and entertain the elderly who were living there.
John enjoyed working in the yard, mowed lawns, trimmed shrubbery, had a flower garden and made wooden yard ornaments. He belonged to Notre Dame Parish, the Cresco Council 1571 and the Davis Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the VFW. John held many offices in these organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella; one daughter, Betty Ryan of Waukon, IA; two grandchildren: Chad and Laura Ryan; and one sister: Margaret Hovorka of Cresco, IA.
John was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Joseph, Frank, Edward, Henry and Jim Tlusty; and three sisters: Elizabeth Wagner, Mary Bugenhagen and Josephine Koshatka.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 2, 2004 at the Notre DameParish-Assumption Worship Center with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Organist was Suzanne Ollendick. Cantor was Joe Wacha. Lector was Sister Mary Hargrafen. Eucharistic Ministers were Jerome Nibauer and Sister Mary Hargrafen. Gift Bearers were his grandchildren. Placing of the pall was done by Marcella, Betty, Chad, & Laura. Honorary Casket Bearers were Tim Howland, Don and Rusty Tlusty, Harvey Koshatka, Dale Vrba, Darryl Englehardt, Joe Sobolik, Anita Schissel, & Shirley Tupy. Casket Bearers were Dick Zak, Bob Moudry, Don Scharnweber, Alan Novak, Dale Arnold, & Bill Ferrie. Les Fields played Taps at the Military Services.

Gertrude C. Wilson
Gertrude Wilson, age 90, of Cresco, Iowa, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.
Gertrude C. Wilson was born on August 12, 1911 in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Julia (Woods) Wilson. She was a graduate of Cresco High School. She also attended Iowa State Teachers College in 1931. She taught for twelve years in various rural schools in Howard County. In 1941 she was elected president of the Iowa State Rural Teachers' Association, which had 8,000 members. In 1942 she moved to Oakland, CA. During the war period, she worked at the munitions factory helping to her part for America. Following the war, she worked as office manager of Gardner Neon and Ignition Transformer Inc. from 1958 until 1973. During this time, she became half owner of this company. From 1973 to 1985, she then worked as office manager for Kelly's Sporting Goods. She retired in 1985, and moved to Cresco, IA.
Gertrude spent many hours doing volunteer work with the poor, the elderly, and minority groups in Oakland, CA. She enjoyed traveling, and traveled to every continent, her favorite being the Orient. She belonged to the Notre Dame Parish Altar and Rosary Society.
Gertrude is survived by three nephews: Gerald E. Wilson of Cresco, IA, Dean Wilson of Knoxville, IA, and Dennis Wilson of Iowa City, IA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Emmett Wilson and Floyd Wilson.

Gregory LaVern Augustine
Gregory L. Augustine, age 80, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at his daughter’s home in Stanton, California while visiting family.
Funeral Services are being held on Monday, January 9, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the Notre Dame Parish - St. Joseph's Worship Center with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Cresco. Rev. Richard Ament officiated. Organist was Wendy Schatz. Cantor was Katie Ferrie. Eucharistic Minister was Mary Augustine. Lectors were Jennifer Gaul, Josh Prybylski, Joe Augustine, and Katie Augustine. Gift Bearers were Emily Kellenberger, Annie Augustine, Brittney Augustine and Linda Augustine. Casket Bearers were Nick Augustine, Joe Augustine, Hans Gruhler, Kris Sajdak,
Brandon Sajdak, Ethan Duncan, Brad Stockman, Dan Vrba, and Josh Prybylski .
Gregory LaVern Augustine was born in Geddes, South Dakota, on January 26, 1925, the son of Gregory A. and Othilia (Kuhle) Augustine. He attended school in South Dakota. In 194l, Greg’s family moved to Whittemore, IA and in 1944, they moved to Bancroft, IA. He farmed with his father. On June 1, 1945, Greg entered the United States Army at Fort Snelling, MN. He was in CO B 760th MP BN and served until December 11, 1946.
On June 1, 1949, he was united in marriage to Dolores Becker at Wesley, Iowa. They became the parents of ten children. In 1958, Greg and Dolores moved to the Cresco area, farming north of town. In 1974, he sold the farm and began working at United Shippers until he retired. After retirement, he was employed part-time at Featherlite, Inc.
Greg was a member of Notre Dame Parish. He enjoyed woodworking for family members, reading, playing cards, yard work, trips with friends and family. He especially enjoyed the family gatherings. They were very important to him.
He is survived by his wife: Dolores, seven daughters: Barbara Augustine and friend Gary Mancini of Stanton, CA, Kathy (Pat) Kellenberger of Middle Amana, IA, Diane (Bob) Pittman of Peoria, AZ, Marian (Chris) Gruhler of Kansas City, MO, Yvonne (Mike) Sajdak of Cresco, IA, Patty (Oscar) Jackson of Cresco, IA, Karla (Dan) Duncan of Noblesville, IN; two sons: Dennis (Mary) of Somers, WI and William (Linda) of Kenosha, WI; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; five sisters: Wilma Haupert and Lorraine Vaske, both of Algona, IA, Luella Richter of Bancroft, IA, Vera Delaney of Mesa, AZ, and Rosie Kingsley of Palatine, IL.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, Linus, and a daughter Rosalie Augustine.

Herschel Duane Knutson
H. Duane Knutson, 77, of Jerico, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday, March 17 at Jerico Lutheran Church, rural New Hampton with Reverend Kent Dethlefsen officiating. Mary Beth Dethlefsen will be the organist and will accompany those in attendance singing….
Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Dennis Knutson, Eric Knutson, Scott Engebretson, Jamie Knutson, Tim Knutson, and Jeff Yezek will be casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Alger Amble, Kenneth Fossen, Pete Hereid, Merle Hereid, Harvey Knutson, Lawrence Ondrashek.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 pm Friday at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services at the church.
Herschel Duane Knutson was born August 18, 1923 at New Hampton, the son of Jeff A. & Hattie (Attleson) Knutson. He was baptized in 1923 and confirmed in 1937, both at Jerico Lutheran Church. He attended a rural school near his home and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1941. After High School, Duane taught at rural school for 1 year. He then began farming with his family. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1948 and served 1 year of active duty and 4 years of Army Reserve Duty. He received his Basic Training in 1948 at Ft. Riley, KS. He then attended administrative school and graduated from Camp Lee, VA. He was stationed at Armico Chemical Center in Baltimore, MD. He then served in Charles City in the Army Reserve Infantry Company for 4 years. Duane farmed “until he got tired” on the Jerico farm. He served as church custodian for the better part of 25 years and was also the Mayor of Jerico for many consecutive terms. He was amember of the Jerico Lutheran Church.

Harold Olai Fossen
Harold “Buggs” Fossen, 74, of Jerico, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester of cancer.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Sunday, November 18 at Jerico Lutheran Church, rural New Hampton with Reverend Kent Dethlefsen officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Lawler American Legion Post 279. Casket bearers will be Gene Flatjord, Bruce Flatjord, Keith Vsetecka, Bruce Qualley, Marvin Martinek, & Bob Martinek.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 pm Saturday at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton, and an hour prior to services at the church.
Harold Olai Fossen was born March 14, 1927, on a farm east of Jerico, the son of Severt & Hansena (Knutson) Fossen. He was baptized in 1927 and confirmed in 1941, both at Jerico Lutheran Church. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1944. On March 9, 1945, Harold was sworn into the Naval Reserve at Waterloo, IA. He received his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station where he spent 6 weeks and then was transferred to a Marine training camp in Indicot, Rhode Island for another 6 weeks of training. After his training in Rhode Island he was sent to Camp Parks, CA where he was shipped out to the 38th Sea-Bees in Hawaii then Okinawa, and later Yakima, Japan. He was honorably discharged on June 6, 1946 at Minneapolis, MN after nearly 16 months of service.
After returning from the service, Harold farmed with his family and also worked at the Oliver Corporation in Charles City. On September 5, 1964 he was happily married to Mildred Martinek at Jerico Lutheran Church. Following their marriage the couple resided east of Jerico. In 1986 he retired from Oliver and continued farming.
He was a lifelong member of Jerico Lutheran Church, where he served in many offices at the church and was currently serving on the cemetery board. He was a member of the Lawler American Legion Post 279. He was an avid sportsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping.
He is survived by his wife Mildred, a brother Kenneth of Jerico, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Harold James Piper
Harold Piper, 60, of Ionia, died Thursday, November 22, 2001 at his home in Ionia of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday, November 26 at the Ionia Congregation Church in Ionia with Reverend Catherine Luck officiating.
Burial will be in Alcock Cemetery, rural Fredericka with Jim Stanton, Terry Hennings, Tim Piper, Greg Hennings, Tony Hennings, & Jeffrey Hennings serving as casket bearers.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 pm Sunday at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton, and an hour prior to services at the church.
Harold James Piper was born April 30, 1941, in Iowa City, IA, the son of Clyde & Irene (Brewer) McDaniel. He received his education in Ackley. On June 10, 1962 he was united in marriage to Geraldine Lampe at the Little Brown Church. After their marriage the couple resided in various places near New Hampton. Harold worked for McGrath’s Implement for 25 years and T & K Repair for 10 years. In 1993 the couple moved to Ionia where they were currently residing. In 1998, Harold started his own business, Piper Repair, in Ionia.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine, 2 daughters Pamela (Terry) Hennings of Tripoli, Annette (Jim) Stanton of Woodward, IA, a son Tim (Melissa) Piper of Woodward, IA, 5 grandchildren Gregory, Anthony, & Jeffrey Hennings of Tripoli and Rylie And Levi Stanton and 8 Step brothers & sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son Toni Lee Piper (1962).

Harvey Raymond Roberson
Harvey Raymond Roberson, 84, of Jerico, died Thursday, January 31, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Sunday at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico with Reverend Kent Dethlefsen officiating. Mary Beth Dethlefsen will be the organist and will accompany those in attendance singing “Lift High The Cross,” “For All The Saints,” “I’m But A Stranger Here,” & “There Is A Place. ”
Burial will be in the church cemetery with grandsons Scott Dahle, Tim Cutsforth, Stacey Dahle, Robert Roberson Jr, Wayne Haskovec, Tyler Haskovec, Chris Roberson, & Daniel Stover serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters Ann Miles, Sarah Jane Burch, Stephanie Dahle, Alisa Roberson, and Andrea Kolbet. Also serving as honorary casket bearers will be Joe Sheehy, Rick Throndson, Alvin Paulsen, John Costello, Art Valvoda, and Charles Johnson.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm Saturday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services at the church.

Harvey Raymond Roberson was born June 16, 1917, in rural Jerico, the son of Severt S. & Anna Sophia (Hildahl) Roberson. He was baptized and confirmed at Jerico Lutheran Church. He attended rural school at Paris #7 and graduated from the New Hampton High School. He was united in marriage to S. Elouise (Walters) on October 14, 1937 at the Jerico/Saude Church Parsonage. After their marriage the couple lived on the family farm and farmed there his whole life. He was active in the Farm Bureau, served on the New Hampton School Board, and served on several committees of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Synod in Mankato, MN. Harvey also served several terms on the Howard County ASCS Committee. He was a lifelong member of the Jerico Lutheran Church.
He is survived by 6 children Diane (Donald) Burch of Galena, Il, Jean Cutsforth of Cedar Falls, Betty (Bob) Arndt of Des Moines, Suzanne (Stewart) Stover of Rockford, IL, Robert (Marcia) Roberson of New Hampton, Sara (Wayne) Haskovec of Reinbeck. 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren. 2 sisters-in-law Evelyn Roberson of New Hampton and Thelma Roberson of Lufkin, TX; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife S. Elouise on November 22, 2001; 2 sisters Bernice Haugen and Pearl Christensen; 4 brothers Omar, Clarence, Norman, and Roy.

Hazel Arlene Crooks
Hazel Crooks, 84, of New Hampton, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City after an 8-year battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday, March 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, also in New Hampton.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 pm Wednesday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton, where there will be a 4 pm combined CD of A & Rosary Society rosary and a 7 pm scripture service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.
Hazel Arlene Crooks was born June 18, 1917, at Alta Vista, IA, the daughter of Herman & Christine (Erion) Dopp. She received her education in Alta Vista, graduating from the Alta Vista Public School. After her schooling she lived with Rita & Clarence White working as a housekeeper and taking care of their children. She then went to work for Gerald Crooks as a bookkeeper at Crooks Implement in Alta Vista. On October 24, 1946 she married Gerald F. Crooks in Waterloo, IA. The couple resided in Alta Vista and continued to operate the Implement together until their retirement in 1971. The couple then moved to the Smith Century farm north of New Hampton where they resided until Gerald’s death in 1996. Hazel then moved to New Hampton where she was currently residing. She was a member of the Alta Vista VFW Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Joan of Arc #388, St. Joseph Church, and the rosary society. She was also active in the Cancer Support group in New Hampton. She enjoyed playing bridge and 500 as well as traveling.
Hazel is survived by 2 daughters Cheryl (Luke) Madsen of Brooklyn Park, MN, Denise (Bill) Brinker of Maplewood, MN; 3 sons Craig (Jan) Crooks of Mason City, James (Lori) Crooks of Minco, OK, Kevin (Debbie) Crooks of Alta Vista; 12 grandchildren Kelly MacMaster Lind, Kristina MacMaster, Robert MacMaster, Ryan Crooks, Adam Crooks, Jared Crooks, Crystal Hacker, A. J. Hacker, Daniel Crooks, Katie Crooks, Sydney Brinker, and Alyson Brinker; 3 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald F. Crooks (June 21, 1996), a half-brother Alvin Wismer, and a daughter-in-law Janine Crooks.

Helen M. Flugge
LIME SPRINGS: Helen M. Flugge, 71, of Lime Springs, IA, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, IA, after a long illness.
Helen was born on July 14, 1931, Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Helen (Pipin) Maskarina. On September 21, 1947. she married Ralph Flugge at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They farmed in the Lime Springs area.
She is survived by her husband: Ralph; two daughters: Linda (Roger) Dvorak of Iowa City, IA and Sue (Gus) Thomas of McChesney Park, IL; 4 sons: Larry, Ralph L (Mary), Randy (Cecelia), and Steve (Diane) all of Cresco, IA; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Kelley of Mason City, IA, Marjorie Nelson of Forest City, IA, and Anna Maskarina of Minneapolis, MN.
Helen was preceded in death by one brother, George Maskarina
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, with inurnment in the Howard Center Cemetery both in Cresco. There will be no visitation. Family will greet friends from 10:00 A.M. until time of services at the church on Wednesday

Helen B. Griffin
Helen B. Griffin, 99, of New Hampton, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in New Hampton.
Burial will be Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 pm Wednesday at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton and also an hour prior to services at the church.

Helen Elizabeth Sullivan
Helen Sullivan of Cresco, died Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Homestead Assisted Living Home in Mason City, Iowa, where she has made her home for the past three weeks. She was 90 years of age.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco, with burial in Calvary Cemetery at Elma, IA. Rev. Kenneth Gehling and Msgr Donald Heineman will concelebrate a Mass of Christian burial. Lector will be Nancy Gibbons, gifts will be carried by John and Charlene Tull, honorary bearers will be Shawn and Randy Drew, Casket bearers will be: Joseph Bork, Roy Kraninger, Brett Corrick, Michael and Stephen McGrane, and Issac Gibbons. The family will place the pall. Organist will be Suzanne Ollendick and Don Davis will lead the congregation in singing, “Be Not Afraid”, “Prayer to St. Francis”, the Celtic Farewell and “How Thou Art”.
Helen Elizabeth Sullivan was born on May 23, 1914 at the home of her parents, George and Mayme (Solomon-Emig) Kohles, near Harlan, Iowa. She attended the rural school and as a young girl the family moved to a farm near Elma, IA. Helen helped on the farm until she established her own family.
On March 4, 1935, Helen was united in marriage to Joseph Sullivan at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, Iowa. They became the parents of six daughters. Helen and Joe farmed west of Elma for many years and belonged to the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. After their retirement from the farm, they moved to Elma and then Cresco and Helen sold Stanley Home Products, worked as a nurse aide at the Evans Memorial home for over 20 years and volunteered at the Hospital in Cresco.
Helen belonged to Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center, its Altar and Rosary Society, and the Pink Ladies Auxiliary. Helen liked flowers, painting, drawing, and art. She also liked to travel, and go shopping with her daughters. Helen was a very family oriented person who loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. When they came to visit, it became the highlight of her life.
Helen is survived by her six daughters: Shirley (Elvin) Daleske of Tucson, AZ, JoAnn Bork of Des Moines, IA, Myrna (Rick) Wagner of Ridgeway, IA, Charlene (John) Tull of Lacey, WA, Connie ( Garry ) Kraninger of Independence, IA and Nancy (Tim) Gibbons of Mason City, IA; 31 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; four sisters: Marcella Wyatt, Stella (Warren) Wyatt and Rita (Jim) Thompson all of Riceville, IA and Anna Jean (Jim) Sullivan of Waterloo, IA.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph, on March 31, 1983; two grandchildren: Patrick McGrane, a great granddaughter, Amelia Mack,; two sons-in-law, Helmut Bork and Earl McGrane, one grandson-in-law, Karl Eckrich, two brothers: Alfred and Urban Kohles, and three sisters: Lenora and Rose Kohles, and Mary Nelson-Whitinger.

Helen A. Zobeck
Helen A. Zobeck, 88, of Elma, died Wednesday, January 09, 2002 at the Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, January 12 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Reverend John Hemann presiding.
Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, also in Elma.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 pm Friday at Conway Funeral Home in Elma, where there will be a 4 pm rosary & 7 pm scripture service.

Irene R. Nichols
Irene Nichols died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa. She was 89 years of age.
Irene R. Nichols was born on January 1, 1915 at Invergrove, MN, the daughter of Peter and Malvina (Gaudette) Gonier. She was a graduate of St. Margaret’s Academy in Minneapolis, and attended the University of Minnesota briefly. She married Willard I. Nichols at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Minneapolis on May 4, 1935. They were the parents of a daughter, Rebecca Ann, who died in 1956 at the age of 9 1/2.
During WW II, from 1942 through 1946, she was Director of the USO Center in Minneapolis, supervising over 1200 junior and senior hostesses for activities at the Naval Base, Fort Snelling, Camp Savage, and the USO Hospitality Centers at the railroad and bus depots, in addition to the USO Center. In 1963, she became actively involved in travel, and helped start the Gregg Nelson Travel Agency of Eden Prairie, MN, as director of International Travel and group tours, and served as a professional tour escort worldwide. After her retirement in 1978, she and her husband moved to Cresco to make their home.
She was a member of the American Society of Travel Agents, St. Margaret’s Alumnae Association, Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs, Howard County Hospital Auxiliary, Howard County Historical Society, and served on the Evans Memorial Home Board of Directors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Malvina and Peter Gonier, her husband, Willard in 1988, her daughter Rebecca Ann in 1956, two sisters, Berniece Eilitz and Joan Carlson.
She is survived by a foster son: Robert Junjak of Texarkana, AR; two foster granddaughters and three foster great grandchildren; two nieces: Catherine Hegge of Hudson, WI, Ruth Carlson of Minneapolis, MN; two nephews: George Carlson of Braham, MN and John Carlson of Cambridge, MN; two grandnieces and four grandnephews.

James William Greeley
James Greeley, age 65, of Riceville, IA died Monday, November 28, 2005 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
James William Greeley was born in Riceville, Iowa, on January 30, 1940, the son of William F. and Gladys (Wagner) Greeley. He attended the rural school through the eighth grade and graduated in 1958 with the last class out of McIntire. Jim worked with Bob Graves before he graduated and following high school, he entered the U. S. Navy. He spent 20 years in support of his country. He received a National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Sixth Good Conduct Award.
On February 19, 1966, he was united in marriage to Nancy Keeton in Norfolk, VA. They made their home in the Riceville area. Jim worked for Graves when he returned to Riceville, and later drove a quarry truck for Martin-Marietta. He enjoyed working on cars, flying model airplanes and camping with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, four children: Steve, Scott, William, and Stella, all of Riceville; his mother, Gladys Jacobus in the Riceville Community Rest Home, four grandchildren: Andrew, Rayge, Christophre and Nickolaus Greeley; two brothers, John (Beverly) Greeley and Richard (Dawn) Greeley, both of Osage.
He was preceded in death by his father and his step father.
Funeral Services for Jim will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, December 2, 2005 at the Funeral Home, with burial in Wayne Cemetery at McIntire, IA. There will be visitation at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Casket bearers will be Bert Beals, Bob Beals, Bill Beals, Mike Betts, Raymond Garvey, and Jamie Krukow, Honorary bearers will be: Shawn Losee, Joel Losee, Mark Greeley, Mark Evenson, Wayne Johnson, and Jason McKenna. Military rites will be conducted by the Roy Gue Post of the American Legion in Riceville.

James J. Kovarik
(1931-2003)
ELMA:James J. Kovarik, age 72, of Elma, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at his home of an apparent heart attack.
James J. Kovarik was born February 24, 1931 north of Lourdes, in Howard County, Iowa the son of James A. and Katherine C. (Falada) Kovarik. He was a lifetime member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where he was baptized and confirmed. Jim attended grade school at the Paris #9 rural school, he attended school at Lourdes and graduated from Cresco High School in 1950. Following his schooling, he returned to the farm to help. 1955-1957 he worked for the Central Iowa Telephone Co. , 1957-1966 he worked for the Howard County Ag Stabilization and Conservation Service, 1966-1975 he was a field assessor, from 1975 to 2001 he was the Civil Defense and Emergency Management Director, and from 1979 until present he was the General Relief/General Assistance Director.
Jim lived on the home farm taking care of his mother until her death in 1978. He was active in the Boy Scouts, being scoutmasterfor the Lourdes troop. In 1995 he joined the Red Cross and was on their Board of Directors and was involved in family services. He served on the Howard County Historical Preservation Board. As his hobbies, he was an artist, a photographer and was a ham radio operator.
He is survived by one brother: Edward of Forest Park, GA, and one sister: Frances (Raymond) Langham of Marion, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with burial in the church Cemetery, both Lourdes, Iowa. Friends may call at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. on Friday in Cresco and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. There will be 6:30 P.M. Scripture Service and a 7:30 P.M. Knights of Columbus Rosary.

James Mahoney, 74, of Nashua, died Monday, July 30, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of an apparent heart attack.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with Reverend John Hemann officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm Wednesday at the church, where there will be a 5 pm rosary and 7 pm scripture service. Friends may also call an hour prior to services.
