Dorothy H. Dehl
Dorothy H. Dehl, 75, of Waterloo, IA died Sunday, June 20, 2004 from natural causes. She was born July 6, 1928 on a farm near Elma, Iowa in Howard County, the daughter of Henry and Trudy Hinz and mother Flossie Warnet Hinz.
Dorothy graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1947. She married Everett "Buddy" Dehl on July 13, 1947 at Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo, IA. He died November 13, 1988. She worked for the Waterloo School system for thirty years.
Dorothy was a member of Lois Circle at Trinity American Lutheran Church and was active in the church choir for over sixty years. She was a member of the Waterloo Mothers Chorus and Sweet Adeline's. She volunteered at the Cedar Valley Hospice and Southdale Elementary School in Cedar Falls, IA.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Denise and her husband Dale Olson of Waterloo, IA; Three sons:Tracy Dehl of Marshalltown, Dwight Dehl and his wife, Sue of Waterloo, Anthony Dehl and his wife, Sue of Waterloo; daughter in law, Beverly Dehl of Omaha, NE; Nine grandchildren: Ryan Dehl, Bridget Dehl and husband, Gary Gulley, Adam Dehl and wife, Lorene, Mackenzie Dehl, Cody Homewood and wife, Cyndie, Brad Homewood, Doug Dehl, Darcy Ring and husband, Andy, Dezi Dehl; five great grandchildren: Carlin, Lane, Sophia, Brandon, and Gavin. Sister, Norma Hinz of Auburn, CA; and step brother, Claude Murdock of Federal Way, WA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Everett Dehl; son, Bruce Dehl; father and stepmother, Henry and Trudy Hinz; mother, Flossie Warnet Tate; mother in law, Irene Dehl; stepbrother, Robert Murdock; sister in law, Mildred Gann; and brother in law, Sonny Dehl.

Anne Derr
Anne Derr, 98, of Ravenwood Healthcare Center, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Ravenwood. Anne was born October 12, 1905, in Waterloo, the daughter of John R. and Elizabeth (Donahue) Crowley. She grew up in Waterloo, attended St. Mary's School, and graduated from there in 1920.
Anne worked in sales in women's ready to wear, including as manager of the Dixie Store, and also worked at Singer Sewing Machine Company. While Singer's she gave sewing lessons for several years.
Anne married Homer J. Derr on April 5, 1926 in Waterloo. They were married for forty one years, until his death in 1967.
Ann is survived by her son William Derr of Waterloo, three grandchildren, and one great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Homer, brothers John and Joe, and sister Catherine McGovern.
Lola M. Dix
Lola M. Dix, 90, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home died there Sunday, February 6, 2005. She was born on November 29, 1914 in Greene, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Adeline (Fick) Ellerman.
Lola attended college in Des Moines. She married Kermit L. Dix November 22, 1941 in Waverly, IA. He died on March 2, 1986. She was Past President of PTA at Orange Township School.
Lola is survived by her 3 daughters, Jacqueline Durnin of Waterloo, Darlys Warns of Waterloo, and Connie Dix of Flossmoor, IL; 8 grandchildren, Brenda Deuth, Michelle Hansen, Neil Hammargren, Jill Stewart, Gregory Warns, Matthew Warns, Nicole Hill-Podraza, and Andrew Dix-Hill; 13 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Irving Ellerman of Waverly; sister, Lucille Folkers of Allison; three sisters-in-law: Dawn Cheney of Greene, Twila Smith of Greene, and Audrey Dix of Greene.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Eldon Ellerman.
Christina Jean Dowd
Christina Jean Dowd, 84, of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Bartels. Jean was born October 14, 1919, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the daughter of David and Mary Jane (Leighton) Ramsay. She grew up in the Holyoke/Chicopee area and graduated from high school there. She married Edward W. Dowd July 8, 1944 in Willimanset, MA.
Jean enjoyed oil painting, music, dance, and was a devoted wife and mother, loving, thoughtful and patient.
Jean is survived by her husband Edward; daughter Lenore and her husband Don Nicholson of Waterloo, IA; son David Dowd and his wife Carol of Southlake, Texas; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Nancy (David) Charitat and their children Leah and Celine; Tracy (Robert) Slicker and their children Maxwell Hargreaves, Olivia and Greyson; Sharon Dowd; and Steven Dowd. She is also survived by her sister Marjory (Harvey) LaFleur of Chicopee and Margaret (Joe) Jochim also of Chicopee.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Agnes Dzwonkoski.
Edward Dowd
Edward Dowd, 85, of Bartel’s Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, Iowa; formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Holyoke, died there on Thursday, February 17, 2005. He was born on October 6, 1919, in Holyoke, MA, the son of Edward Francis and Zorah May (Rogers) Dowd. He married Christina Jean Ramsay July 8, 1944, in Willimansett, MA. She died February 18, 2004.
Edward worked for the U.S. Navy for 7 ½ years, the U.S. Coast Guard for 12 ½ years, and a civilian employee of the Navy for 13 years. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He is survived by his daughter, Lenore (Don) Nicholson of Waterloo, IA; son, David (Carol) Dowd of Southlake, TX ; 4 grandchildren, Nancy (David) Charitat of Navarre, FL; Tracy (Robert) Slicker of Coleyville, TX; Sharon Dowd of Southlake, TX; and Steven Dowd of Southlake, TX; 5 great-grandchildren, Leah and Celine Charitat; Maxwell Hargreaves; and Oliva and Greyson Slicker; sister, Rose Sasanoff of Sandy Hook, CT; and brother, Earl F. Dowd of Westfield, MA.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Christina.
Penny L. Dunakey
Penny L. Dunakey, 60, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home from a lengthy illness. She was born December 17, 1943 in McGregor, Iowa, the daughter of Leighton and Carol (Gerner) Hedeman.
She married Paul C. "Pete" Dunakey on December 26, 1961 at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waterloo, IA.
Penny is survived by her husband; two sons, Jeffrey Dunakey and his wife Susan, of Waterloo and John Dunakey and his wife Stephanie, of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Tyler and Blake; mother, Carol Hedeman; six sisters; and one brother.
She is preceded in death by her father.
Her body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes.

Maxine M. Dunsmoor
Maxine M. Dunsmoor, 85, of 1845 West 3rd Street died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center. She was born July 27, 1918, the daughter of Charley and Josie (Kellogg) Klatt.
Maxine married LeVerne F. Dunsmoor on July 15, 1940 in Winona, Minnesota. He died May 29, 1992. She worked at Control - O - Fax for 12 years in the early 1980's.
Maxine is survived by her daughter, Elaine Langenwalter and her husband Mark, of Cedar Falls, IA; son, Mark Dunsmoor and his wife Kathy, of Cedar Falls, IA; four grandchildren, Amber, Ryan, Josie, and Jeremy; two step grandchildren, Jacob, and Joshua; seven great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; three half sisters; and two half brothers.
Maxine is preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Norman E. Durns
Norman E. Durns, 72, died Thursday October 23, 2003 at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, following complications of an illness. Norman was born October 16, 1931 in Garretson, S.D. to John and Nora (Andersen) Durns.
He married Darlene Harder on March 7, 1954 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Hudson, IA.
Norman drove truck, was a supervisor at Engineered Equipment for 11 years, and then retired as a fork lift driver at John Deere. He served with the United States Marines during the Korean War from 1951-1953. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran and the Evansdale AmVets.
He is survived by his wife Darlene; son-in-law Merritt (Rev. Debra)Bebout, of Trempealeau, WI; brother John (Donna) Durns, of Tuscon, AZ; sister Betty (Don) Hundley, of LeGrand, IA; brother Gerald Durns, Lake Chalan, WA, brother-in-law Everett Stewart, Waterloo; and sister-in-law JoAnn Durns of Apple Valley, CA. One grandson Merritt (Jessica) Bebout, Winona, MN and one step grandson Gabriel Bebout, Winona, MN.
Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter Sheryl Diane Bebout in 1980; son Brett Norman Durns in 2001; sister Lucille Stewart, and 2 brothers Richard and Royce Durns.
Lewis R. Eastman
Lewis R. Eastman, 85, formerly of Moline and Waterloo, IA, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at St. Anthony‘s Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.
Mr. Eastman was born July 3, 1918 in Blackhawk County, Waterloo, IA, the son of Eli and Sylvia Ellington Eastman. He married Wilma A. Mueller on April 25, 1937, in Galena, IL. She preceded him in death on April 14, 2003.
Mr. Eastman retired as a Marketing Representative in 1977, after 29 years at the John Deere Waterloo Works.
Lewis was a WWII Navy Veteran.
He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, John Deere Retirees and American Legion, Mountain Home, AR.

Glenn E. Eickelberg
Glenn E. Eickelberg, 96, of Waterloo, died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at his home of natural causes. He was born November 5, 1907 in Waterloo, IA, the son of William and Lillian (Dilger) Eickelberg.
Glenn graduated from East High School in 1927. He married Madge C. Williamson on February 1, 1934 in Manchester, IA. She died June 23, 2004.
Glen worked for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring in 1972, with 43 years of service and a lifetime member of the John Deere Supervisor’s Club. He was a member of the Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, and a long time member of the church choir. Glenn loved to sing and he also sang with the John Deere Melodeeres for many years.
Glen is survived by two sons: Glenn Eickelberg Jr. And his wife Cecelia, of Shell Rock, IA, and Dean Eickelberg and his wife Diana, of Decorah, IA; 6 grandchildren: Rick Eickelberg of Hudson, Jeff Eickelebrg of Waterloo, Heidi (David) Miller of Indianola, IA, and Dan, Allison, and Robyn Eickelberf, of Decorah; 3 step-grandchildren: Dennis (Donna) Bass, of Burkburnett, TX., Perry (Penny) Bass, of Aurora, CO., and Marie (Bill) Tillman, of Atoka, TN.; 6 great grandchildren; 7 step-great grandchildren; brother, Keith Eickelberg of CA; sister, Leah Hileman of Cedar Falls, IA; and sister in law, Sina Eickelberg of St. Paul, MN.

Madge C. Eickelberg
Madge C. Eickelberg, 95, of Waterloo, IA died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
Mrs. Eickelberg was born November 27, 1908 in Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of David and Grace (Funk) Williamson.
She Married Glenn E. Eickelberg February 1, 1934 in Manchester, IA. She worked at Power’s Manufacturing, The Green Stamp Store and volunteered at Allen Memorial Hospital, all in Waterloo. She was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church and belonged to the ‘Rebecca Circle’ at church.
Mrs. Eickelberg is survived by her husband; Two sons: Glenn Jr. (Cecelia) Eickelberg of Shell Rock, Dean (Diana) Eickelberg of Decorah; Six grandchildren: Rick Eickelberg of Hudson, Jeff Eickelberg of Waterloo, Heidi (David) Miller of Indianola, IA, Dan, Allison and Robyn Eickelberg of Decorah; Three step-grandchildren: Dennis (Donna) Bass of Burkburnett, TX, Perry (Penny) Bass of Centennial, Co, Marie (Bill) Tillman of Atoka, TN; Six great grandchildren; Seven step great grandchildren; Two sister in laws: Margaret Williamson of Dunwoody, GA, and Vivian Williamson of Waterloo. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Percy Williamson.
Doris M. Eivins
Doris M. Eivins, 70, of Waterloo, died Thursday, December 18, 2003 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. Doris was born April 25, 1933, in Waterloo, the daughter of George and Florence I. (Peake) Allman. She grew up in Waterloo and graduated from East High School in 1951.
Doris worked as a Case Worker for the Iowa Department of Human Services for over twenty years, retiring in 1985.
Doris was a loving and caring person. Her family was most important to her, their time together and meals shared. She was a cook, a gardener, a musician (playing piano by ear using the black keys), and a friend to many. Her relationship with her Lord was important as well, evidenced by her daily routine of prayer, her life, and her service to others. She was an active member of the Central Christian Church family, a bell ringer, former Deaconess, and volunteer for many activities.
Doris is survived by her son John (Robbin) Eivins of Williamsburg; daughter Sue (Bret) Trasamar of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Kris (Donnie) Dietzenbach, Dan Eivins, Ashley Eivins, Lindsey Lown, and Andy Lown; a great grandson Nicholas Dietzenbach; sister Berneice Finger of Chanhassen, MN; sister Frances Swicegood of Woodbury, MN; and sister Mary Finger of Manchester.
Annemarie Engel
Annemarie Engel, 93, of Hudson, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck. She was born on October 11, 1911 in Kiel, Germany, the daughter of Rudolf and Anna (Junge) Dohrn. She attended school in Germany and came to the United States following the war in 1948.
Annemarie married Henry Engel on October 23, 1948 in Gladbrook. He died February 27, 1987.
She is survived by her daughter, Gesche Petersen and her husband Lynn of Hudson; son, David Engel and his wife Penny of Hudson; eight grandchildren: Gwen, Mitch, Bruce, Sara, Ryan, Dustin, Andrew, and Brett; twelve great-grandchildren: Kyle, Karly, Kara, Corbin, Chloe, Madison, Blake, Tyler, Kelsey, Connor, Cole and Ella. She is also survived by her sister, Kate Laue of Germany.
Annemarie was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Herman Dohrn; and sister, Emma Haebel.
James R. Estel
James R. Estel, 84, of Mallard Point, Cedar Falls, formerly of Hudson, died on Friday, October 8, 2004 at his residence of natural causes. He was born on August 28, 1920 in Diagonal, Iowa, the son of Walter and Letha (Criswell) Estel.
James married Wanda I. Hutchins-Wood on December 28, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II. James worked for Northern Natural Gas Pipeline Company for thirty years, retiring in 1983. He loved to fly, held several FAA ratings, was a free lance flight instructor, and owned his own airplane.
He was a member of the High 12, the Shrine, and Masonic Lodge. His daughter-in-law, Robin looked at James more as a “father figure” than a “father-in-law”.
James is survived by his wife, Wanda; son, Dennis Estel and his wife Robin, of Cedar Falls; step-daughter, Cheryl Leeson, of Waterloo; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Reva Unger.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Ronald.
Charles E. Fairbanks
Charles Edward Fairbanks, 93, of 1220 Walker St., Waterloo, died Thursday, January 15, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center. Chick was born October 19, 1910 in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Arthur W. and Julia (Schoonover) Fairbanks.
When his mother died at an early age, Charles moved to Waterloo with his family, starting work when 15 at Rath's. He worked for John Deere for 34 years, retiring in 1976.
Charles married Ethel Walters but she later died. He met Violet Bannister on a date for dancing at the Electric Park. They were married April 20, 1954 in Cedar Rapids, and attended a dance a recently as December. Chick has always enjoyed all sports, as a spectator, playing semi pro baseball, as a mentor to the kids on the ball diamond near the house, bowling in a league until last year, and even as the quarter pitching champion of John Deere. He has been elected to the Waterloo Baseball and Waterloo Bowling Halls of fame.
Chick is survived by his wife Violet; son Ronald (Norma) Fairbanks of Comanche, IA; daughter Charlene (Jerry) Vaala of Waterloo; daughter Roberta (Don) Wilson of Washburn; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Yvonne "Bonnie" Johnson; grandson Anthony Gilbert; 4 sisters, Lenora Shepard, Myrtle Clausen, Helen Penny, Ethel Bender; 6 brothers Arthur, Clark, Richard, Willis, Elmer "Lee", and Mike.
Shirley J. Faust
Shirley Jean Faust, 70, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at Cedar Falls Health Care Center, following a lengthy illness.
Shirley Jean was born March 25, 1933 daughter of Henry and Elsie (Aders) Faust in Sumner, IA.
She enjoyed embroidering, flower gardening, and her dog Jamie.
She is survived by her sister Norma Mae Cornwell of Cedar Falls-to whom she always cherished a special connection. She is also survived by her aunts Helen Schoenbeck, Waverly and Anna Grimm, Manchester. A niece Barb Holven and her husband Russell, Waterloo; nephews Ronald Cornwell and his wife Shelly, Waterloo; and Delbert Cornwell and his wife Tracy, of Texas.
She was also a great-aunt to Danny and Adam Holven and Amy Van Der Kamp. A great-great aunt to Hailey, Andrew, Dylan, and Blake.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Thomas K. Fellmer
Thomas K. Fellmer, 57, of 3515 Rosehill Terrace, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center. Tom was born November 19, 1945 in Waterloo the son of Harold and Rose (Graff) Fellmer. He grew up in Waterloo and graduated from Columbus High School in 1964.
Tom married Charlene Nixon July 9, 1966 at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Waterloo. He worked at John Deere Product Engineering Center until retiring due to his health in 2002.
Tom is survived by his wife Charlene; daughter Julie Nielsen of Waterloo; son David and his wife Kim of Waterloo; son Jon and his wife Deanna of Cedar Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Kara Klima, Brandon Gruwell, Andrew Nielsen, Aaron Heimbuck, Alivia Fellmer, and Rylee Fellmer; great grandson Hunter Klima; brother Charles Fellmer of Evergreen, Colorado; and brother John Fellmer of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends and family were especially important to Tom. He loved spending time with them, fishing, and golfing. He will be missed by everyone.
Terry M. Fike
Terry M. Fike, 60, of Evansdale, died on Friday, December 10, 2004 in an auto accident. He was born on May 28, 1944 in Waterloo, Iowa , the son of Leon and Donna (Fairbanks) Fike. Terry married Patricia Ann Brady November 16, 1967 in Evansdale. They were later divorced. He married Mary Kay Apling on January 19, 1995 in Waterloo.
Terry graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1962. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967, including service on the USS Oklahoma City. He retired from John Deere Tractor Works on March 31, 1997 after 30 years. Terry owned a ‘55 Chevy Bel Air which he enjoyed showing, and had won awards for, in Midwest auto shows. Terry was an easy going person, with a sense of humor, and one who was friendly to everyone.
Terry is survived by his wife Kay; 2 daughters, Jody Fike of Evansdale, and Erin Fike of Evansdale; 2 step-sons, Brad Berst of Waterloo, and Brian Berst of Cedar Falls; grandchildren and step-grandchildren; step-father, Pete Peterson of Waterloo; 3 brothers, Ronny Fike and his wife Pat of Waterloo, I.J. Peterson and his wife Darlyne of Harpers Ferry, IA, and Steve Peterson and his wife Mary of Waterloo. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Davis and her husband Ronnie of Harpers Ferry, IA..
Francis R. Fleming
Francis R. Fleming, 95, of Friendship Village, died on Sunday, November 21, 2004. Francis was born on December 18, 1908 in Delhi, Iowa, the son of Edmund H. and Susan Augusta (Bondurant) Fleming. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1932.
Francis married Lois M. Cloud June 12, 1935 in Manchester, Iowa. He practiced law in Manchester until being called to active duty in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and then in the Army Reserve until 1968, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. After his release from active duty in 1946, he was employed by GAB Business Services in Davenport and then in Waterloo as an insurance adjuster until his retirement on January 1, 1974. He traveled throughout Iowa during his career as an insurance adjustor and was an ROTC instructor at the University of Iowa.
Francis was a member at Waterloo First United Methodist Church, Past President of High 12, member of the Waterloo Masonic Lodge, and the Reserve Officers Association. He was a charter member of the Northeast Iowa Chapter of The Retired Officers Association. Francis was also an avid rock collector and enjoyed making jewelry out of some of the rocks he collected.
Francis is survived by his wife, Lois; three sons, Phillip Fleming and his wife Verla of Fuquay-Varina, NC, John Fleming of Minneapolis, MN, and David Fleming and his wife Mary of Zumbrota, MN; daughter, Ruth Kroneman and her husband Jim of Madison, WI; and seven grandchildren, Mark Fleming, Alisha (Allen) Roberts, Barry Fleming, Melinda (Nathan) Thomas, Brian Kroneman, Jennifer (David) Harvey, and Eric Fleming.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Helen McCulley-Meyerhoff.
Roger T. Fox
Roger T. Fox, 85, died Sunday October 5, 2003 in the Friendship Village Med Center. Roger was born February 7, 1918 in Glouchester, New Jersey the son of Roger T. and Louise (Horner) Fox.
Roger married Lydia Nadine Harken March 30, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas. She died August 17, 2002. He served in the Army Air Force during WW II. Prior to his time in the service Roger was a professional Jazz musician on the east coast. He was a photography instructor for Hawkeye Community College for 8 years retiring in 1984. Prior to that he worked for National and Lohnes Studios.He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Roger is survived by a daughter Lynda Arbogast and her husband Jim of Mansfield, OH; a son Roger T. Fox III and his wife Hiroko of Hanover, MD; a daughter Lucinda Johnson and her husband Lee of Reinbeck, IA; a son Stuart L. Fox and his fiancé Rochell of Waterloo; 9 grandchildren: Bryan (Deena) Rausch, Allison (Chris) Svec, Jared Johnson, Janee (Kamal) Johnson, Brianne Johnson, Roger Fox IV, Justin, Amber, and Melissa; 3 great grandchildren Jack, Brady, and Kanzah; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Michael C. (Mike) Frehse
Michael C. (Mike) Frehse, 82, of 2708 Crestline Avenue, died on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes. He was born on September 2, 1922 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Fred and Paulyne(Feddersen) Frehse. Michael graduated from West High School in 1941. He received his BA Degree from UNI and his Masters Degree from the University of Arizona at Tucson. He served in the United States Army during WW II.
Michael married Mary Korb on August 14, 1954 at the United Church in Fort Frances, Ontario. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past August. He and Mary enjoyed spending time each year at their cabin in Canada. Michael worked for four years at a paper mill in International Falls, Minnesota and in Evanston, Wyoming for four years teaching. He worked for 20 years in the Waterloo Public Schools at West Junior High School, where he taught Social Studies and coached until his retirement in 1981.
Michael is survived by his wife, Mary; and two daughters, Debbie Frehse of Waterloo, and Nancy Frehse of Waterloo.
