Rev. Maurice M. Frevert
Rev. Maurice M. Frevert, 80, of 820 Bourland Ave., Waterloo, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. He was born November 26, 1923 in Rudd, Floyd County, Iowa, the son of August Conrad and Cora Ada (Kollman) Frevert.
Rev. Frevert graduated from Rudd High School, received a 4 year degree at Upper Iowa University and received his seminary degree at Garrett Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, IL. He married Louise Chenhall on June 7, 1950 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa.
Rev. Frevert was a pastor at the United Methodist Church in Inwood, Lester, Milford, Springville, Prairie Chapel, Galva. Silver Creek, Havelock, Plover, Greene, Lime Springs, Chester, and Winthrop. He retired in 1987 and was later a visitation pastor at First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, IA. He was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, Waterloo. He was also a member of the High 12, a fifty year member of the York Rite Masons, and most recently a member of the Martin Lodge 624. He volunteered with CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program) and various other community services.
Rev. Frevert is survived by his wife; three sons, David Frevert and his wife Lynne, of Garrett Park, MD: Craig Frevert and Melinda Smith, of Greene, IA: and Brian Frevert and his wife Kay, of Littleton, CO; daughter, Sandy Noelting and her husband Jim, of Cedar Falls, IA; seven grandchildren, Andy; John, Grant and Emily Frevert; Jared, Adam and Lauren Noelting; two step great-grandchildren, Tara and Michael McMahon; brother, W. Donald Frevert and his wife Joyce, of Urbandale, IA; sister, Wanda Riechers and her husband Don, of Diamond City, AR; sister in law, Gert Frevert of Maple Plain, MN; and brother in law, Dale Anderson of Minneapolis, MN
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyle Frevert; and sister, Norma Anderson.
Caroline K. Frickson
Caroline K. Frickson, 80, of Coralville, Iowa; formerly of La Porte City and Waterloo, died peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2005, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville. She was born on October 7, 1924, in Isabell, South Dakota, the daughter of Michael and Rose Helen (Wingert) Jacobs. She was raised in St. Lucas, Iowa, where she attended catholic school.
Caroline married Richard “Dick” Frickson on June 19, 1957, in Lancaster, Wisconsin. He died on December 19, 1967. She worked at Black’s Department Store and then at Rath Packing Co. on the packing line for 15 years prior to being a full time devoted home maker, wife, and mother. Caroline was a former member of St John’s Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening, volunteering as a Senior Companion, and children.
She is survived by her three daughters, Judy Rinnels and her husband Nick of Waverly; Delores “Dee” Baxter and her husband Nick of Coralville; Carol Kubik of North Liberty, IA; one son, Don Frickson and his wife Sheila of Tiffin, IA; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Mary Ann Lind and her husband William H. of Harrisburg, Illinois; extended step-family; and several nieces and nephews.
Caroline was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Diane Frickson, infant brother, John Andrew Jacobs; and sister, Josephine Johns.
Donna J. Fulton
Donna J. Fulton, 71, of Waterloo died on Sunday, November 28, 2004 at Friendship Village Retirement Center. She was born on October 18, 1933 in Redfield, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Mable (Morrison) Bailey. She married Bill A. Fulton on April 15, 1955 in Nashua, Iowa. He died December 19, 1996.
Donna graduated from Adel High School in 1951 and Iowa State Teachers College in 1955 with a Teaching Degree and a minor in speech. Donna taught in the Waterloo Community School system for 37 years, retiring in 1997.
Donna was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the P.E.O. Chapter LO, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a dedicated volunteer at Allen Memorial Hospital and Cedar Valley Hospice. Donna wanted to be needed in people’s lives. She cared genuinely about others and made a special point to be involved in their lives. Her grandchildren were a huge part in her life and she was known by “Grams”.
Donna is survived by her son, Douglas Fulton and his wife Tina of West Des Moines; daughter, Becky Coffelt and her husband Bob of Eagle Grove; five grandchildren: Ian and Brian Coffelt and Kylie, Tyler, and Olivia Fulton; and brother, Bruce Bailey and his wife Barbara of Redfield, Iowa.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Bill.
Marie Gard
Marie Gard, 89, of Waterloo, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at her daughter’s home in Colorado of natural causes. She was born on February 14, 1915 in Nevada, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Alma (Helland) Hansen.
Marie graduated from Forest City High School. She married Glen A. Gard January 20, 1935 in Emmons, Minnesota. He died January 6, 1979. Marie was recognized as volunteer of the Year at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center where she was active for many years. She was a devoted member of a mother’s bible study class for 50 years.
Marie is survived by her 2 daughters, Pam McMurrin and her husband Roger of Waterloo, IA, and Carol Ross and her husband Larry of Elizabeth, CO; 5 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen; sons, Richard and David Gard; sisters, Louise Aske and Gertrude Hansen; and brothers, Willard Hansen, Virgil Hansen, and LaVerne Hansen.
Richard N. Garms
Richard N. Garms, 78, of Waterloo, died Sunday, November 9, 2003. He was born May 15, 1925, in Mason City, Iowa; son of Clarence and Valeta (Christensen) Garms. He graduated from the Mason City High School in 1943. He attended Iowa State University and received his BA and Masters Degrees in Physics and Education from the University of Northern Iowa.
Dick married Mary Lou McLaughlin in 1951. He taught physics and science at Oran, Manchester and in the Waterloo Public Schools from 1957 until he retired in 1987. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church..
He is survived by his wife; daughter: Gwen Garms of Waterloo; son: Matthew Garms of Waterloo. Four grandchildren: Charisse, Michael, Ryan and Patrick. Four great grandchildren: Jordan, Arianne, Brandon, and Christopher.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons: Jeffrey and David.
Jean M. Garthoff
Jean M. Garthoff, 77, of Waterloo, died Thursday, August 12, 2004, of natural causes. She was born on July 21, 1927 in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of William Irving and Lillian Frances (Wright) Bisbee.
Jean graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1945. She married Richard A. Garthoff on October 20, 1946 at the East Park Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. She was a charter member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.
Jean is survived by her husband; two daughters, Linda Stejskal and her husband Chuck, of Waterloo, and Brenda Everts and her husband Jim, of Parkersburg, IA; four grandchildren: Corey Everts and his wife Sarah, of Selah, WA: Christina Grier and her husband Chris, of Minneapolis, MN: Sarah Rodgers and her husband Curt, of Washington, IA: and Andrew Everts and Amanda Rigdon, of Brookings, SD; two brothers, Francis Bisbee of Waterloo, and Rex Bisbee and his wife Mary, of Waterloo; two sisters, Midge Philiph and her husband Jim, of Marion, IA, and Lois Clute of Cedar Falls; two sister-in-laws, Ida Bisbee of Cedar Falls, and Velma Rademaker of Rogers, AR; brother-in-law, Harold Jarrett of Columbia, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ernest Bisbee, and Ben Bisbee; and two sisters, Ruth Ingram, and Evelyn Jarrett.

Donita M. Gillespie
Donita M. “Dee” Gillespie, 81, of 219 East 10th Street, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center. She was born May 12, 1923 on a farm near Dunkerton, in Black Hawk County, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Rosa (Turner) Weidman.
Dee graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1942. She married Archie Gillespie and they were later divorced. Dee worked for Powers Manufacturing Company until her retirement in 1990. She was a dedicated worker and took pride in doing things right. She was a very private person but always willing to help others. She was honest and caring. Dee had wonderful neighbors who she really appreciated. Without their help she would not have been able to manage in her home for these last years. She enjoyed eating out at her favorite restaurants and her cat.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Reynolds and her husband Bill, of Waterloo; stepmother, Irene Weidman of Denver, IA; and three half brothers: Mike of Denver, IA, Sam of West Virginia, and Paul of Waterloo.
Dee is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harold; and half brother , Lloyd Jr.
Gene Gorby Sr.
Gene Edward Gorby Sr., 69, of 11 Sans Sousi Dr. died Saturday June 28, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital following complications of surgery. Gene was born Gebruary 18, 1934 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Elmer and Lucille (Roberts) Gorby.
Gene served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Kathleen Franzen June 1, 1959. He worked at House of Honda and for John Deere as a tool and die maker and then Supervisor from January 27, 1955 until his retirement May 31, 1985. After retirement Gene volunteered delivering meals to the elderly and also worked for Royal Flush Shuttle Service.
Gene enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and boating, he also enjoyed NASCAR - (he was a big Earnhardt fan). In his younger days he use to work on and race cars at Tunis Speedway. He was loving and kind to his wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was always supportive to his children and grandchildren and was always available to give guidance when needed. He was a faithful member of Blessed Sacrament Church.
Gene is survived by his wife Kathleen; 5 daughters: Charlotte (Tom) Jeys of Waterloo, Diane (Charles) Gorby-Hoyle of Waterloo, Tamara (Luther) Hougen of Denver, Kimberly (Tad) Rindels of Shell Rock, and Nichole Gorby of Wterloo; a son Gene Jr and special friend Michelle of Allison; 19 Grandchildren: Ryan Cory, and Sara Jeys, Tim and Dennis Blanchard, Kayla and Jeremy Belz, Jami and Cody Hougen, Chelsea, Kaylee Kathleen, and Cole Becker, Kailey Jo and Calvin Rindels, Jo and Brittany Gorby, Shaylon Lahr, Jorden and Jarett Lewis; 3 Great Grandchildren: Nathan Jeys, Jersey Jeys, and Desirae Blanchard. Gene is also survived by a sister JoAnn Carlson of Waterloo and a Step-brother Dale Newton of California. He is preceded in death by his parents and step father Harry Newton.
Anna Mae Grady
Anna Mae Grady, 80, of Friendship Village, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center following a sudden illness. Anna Mae was born December 19, 1923 in Waterloo, the daughter of Lewis and Bernice (Collins) Deits. She grew up in Waterloo and graduated from West High School in 1941.
Anna Mae married Ralph H. Grady September 21, 1942 in Waterloo and together they farmed in Orange Township until moving to town in 1980. She was proud of her charter membership at Grace Brethren Church, faithful in service, and diligent in prayer - praying for each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren daily and by name. Over the years, she was active in W.M.C., daily vacation Bible School, and taught primary Sunday School classes.
Anna Mae and Ralph began a church in the retirement park where they resided in Florida; where she was the pianist from its beginning in 1980. She enjoyed assisting Ralph in the entire ministry of that church. She was also involved in various Waterloo community organizations and clubs.
Anna Mae is survived by her husband Ralph; four children, thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren - daughter Donna Mae (Tom) Miller of Winona Lake, IN, children Annette (Joseph) Coenen, Tami and Amy Miller; son Tom (Jane) Grady of Alpharetta, GA, children Janet (Randy) Darden, Jenny (Michael) Barker, Toby (Katie) Grady, Jamie Grady; son Jim (Jeanette) Grady of Waterloo and children Stephanie Grady and Matthew (Athena) Grady; daughter Betty Anne (Kyle) Bergen of Dallas, GA, children Ben Bergen, Elizabeth (Jason) Flowers, Katie and Charlie Bergen. Also sisters Mary Lou (Paul) Saunders of Mountain Home, AR and Lola (Leonard) Rousselow of LaPorte City. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Iva Belle Kepple.
Delores M. Gregerson
Delores M. Gregerson, 71, of 3213 Dallas Dr., Cedar Falls, died Thursday, October 16, 2003 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester from complications of Nonhodgkin's Lymphoma.
Delores was born October 18, 1931 in Graettinger, Iowa the daughter of Glen and Alice (Anderson) Fisher. She graduated from high school in Graettinger and married Stanley M. Gregerson August 31, 1958 in Graettinger.
Delores is survived by her husband, Stanley, two daughters Debra Simmons of Des Moines, and Denise Phillips and her husband Kevin of Waterloo, a Son Mark and his wife Kelly of Waterloo. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Daniel Simmons, Ryan Phillips, Shawn Phillips, Hollie Phillips, Kaylin Gregerson, and Corey Gregerson. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Donna Thorsland.
Butch Grimstad
Ervin W. "Butch" Grimstad, 64, of Waterloo, died Monday, December 15, 2003. Butch was born June 20, 1939 in Iowa City, Iowa, son of Ervin Niedert who died in a car accident prior birth. Mother and adopted father: Wilhelmina Reints and Ludwig Grimstad. He graduated from Orange Township High School in 1957.
He married Phyllis June Volker on August 8, 1958 at the Trinity American Lutheran Church, Waterloo. Butch worked for Neebel Construction for several years as a contractor until moving to Kansas City in 1979, where he had his own construction business until he became disabled in 1997. He returned back to Iowa in 1995.
He is survived by his wife: five daughters: Dawn Rupe of DeSoto, KS; Michele Honn of Waterloo; Denise and husband Kirk Wright of Independence, MO.; Jerri Wright of Raymore, MO.; Robin and husband Doug Hon of Lathrop, MO.; and son, Jason Grimstad of Waterloo. Brother: Thomas Grimstad of Waterloo. Sister: Mary and husband Burt Volker of Waterloo. Ten Grandchildren: Danielle, Tyler, Jacob, Matthew, Hailery, Shelby, Cortney, Alexandrea, Whitney and Madilyn.
Butch is preceded in death by his father, mother, adopted father, Brother: Jerry Grimstad and sister: Dorothea DeFeis.
Thomas R. Grimstad
Thomas R. Grimstad, 75, of 8025 Dysart Road, Waterloo, died Friday, July 16, 2004 at his home of natural causes. He was born on August 28, 1928 in Waterloo, IA, the son of Ludwig and Viola (Anderson) Grimstad.
Mr. Grimstad graduated from East High School and attended Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1949. Thomas married Lois Mae Handsaker on January 2, 1949 in Cedar Falls, IA. She died September 12, 1992. Mr Grimstad retired in 1993 as an architect for Kirk Gross Company after working for several architectural firms in the area.
Thomas is survived by his threes sons, Ronald Grimstad and his wife Lynn, of West Bend, WI: Keith Grimstad and his wife Dawn, of Dubuque, IA: and Alan Grimstad and his wife Candie, of Waterloo, IA; two daughters, Karen Gerst and her husband Randy, of Waterloo, IA, and Sharron Clement and her husband Dana, of Waterloo, IA; fourteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Volker and her husband Burt, of Waterloo, IA; a half brother Bill and half sister Carmen..
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife; two brothers, Ervin and Jerry; and sister, Dorothea DeFeis.

Robert J. Grove
Robert J. Grove, 78, passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital, in Waterloo.
Robert was born October 16, 1925 to Lee H. and Dee Ette (Lee) Grove.
He married Joann A. Davis Aug. 13, 1949 in LaPorte City. She passed away Dec. 20, 1984. He worked at Rath Packing in the Research and Development Lab until retiring in 1984. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Company A. 398th Regiment, 100 Division. He was active in Waterloo AmVets.
He is survived by his sons Mike, wife Pamela, Grove of Johnston, IA and Dennis, wife Julie, Grove of Waterloo. His daughters Martha, husband Dan, Wagner of Evansdale, Patricia, husband K.C., Rausch of Mt Auburn, IA; Susan, husband Don, Dana of Evansdale; and Ann Marie Grove of Evansdale. He has 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, a brother Dick, wife Betty, Grove of New London, IA. His companion Mildred Siebel of Waterloo.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife Joann.
Edna L. Gudzus
Edna L. Gudzus of Waterloo, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at her home. She was born July 30, 1915, in Fayette Co., Iowa, daughter of Arthur F. and Louisa (Sieck) Frisch.
She married Charles B. Gudzus on June 16, 1948 in Waterloo. He died September 30, 1967.
She worked during the war at John Deere and then at Hinson Mfg. after the war. Later she worked at Social Services for the State of Iowa.
Edna was a member of the Kimball Ave. United Methodist Church. She was involved in the Church Circle, Bible Study and she taught Sunday School
She is survived by her daughter: Marilyn and her husband Loren Greenfield of Galesburg, Illinois. One grandson: Matt Greenfield of Iowa City, Iowa. Two sisters: Elsie Bixby of Hudson, Iowa and Hazel Schwerin of Sumner, Iowa.
Edna is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers: Eldon and Russell Frisch.

Richard R. (Dick) Hackman
Richard R. (Dick) Hackman, 72, of 3784 Memory Lane, died on Tuesday, November 5, 2004 at Allen Memorial Hospital. He was born on December 14, 1931 in Waterloo, IA, son of John Edward and Aline Elva (Doty) Hackman. He graduated from Waterloo East High School.
Richard married Lois Tank Howard in Galena, IL in 1971. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Dick worked in the cut/trim department at Rath Packing Co. for thirty five years, and then at Allen Hospital in Janitorial Services, retiring in 1999.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter, Cindy Simon and her husband, Bruce of Parkersburg, IA; two sons, Brian Hackman and his wife, Casey of Nashua, IA, and John Hackman and his wife, Sheila of Cedar Falls; a step-son, Gerald Howard and his wife, Linda of Forest Lake, MN; and five grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mabel L. Hamer
Mabel von Glan Hamer was born on a farm near Breda, Iowa on October 25, 1917, the twin daughter of Gottlieb and Augusta von Glan. She received her early education in a rural school and graduated in 1935 from the high school in Wall Lake, Iowa. She continued her studies during summer sessions at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, while also teaching in a rural school. In 1939, she received a two-year Normal degree and then taught on the elementary level at Panora and Kingsley, both in Iowa.
In 1941, she married Carl Bickley Hamer of Waterloo. She moved often as she followed him in his United States Service career. While he was teaching at the Sioux Falls Army Air Force Base, she took employment there as a clerk-typist. Carl then enlisted in the Navy and continued further work at Navy Pier in Chicago. Moving on to Chicago with him, she was reinstated as a clerk-typist for the Army Ordnance Department.
After Carl was discharged from the Service, they took residence in Waterloo. When their children reached school age, Mabel completed her B.A. degree at the State College of Iowa, now UNI. She taught in the Waterloo School system for 21 years.
14 years into retirement, she and her husband moved into the Friendship Village Retirement Center. He passed away there on July 28, 2001, after a long illness.
Survivors include: a son, Mark (JoAnn) of Freeport, Ill.; two daughters, Pamela (Jerry) Monroe and Melanie (Jack) Plett, both of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Ben von Glan of Westside; and her twin sister, Marie Fay, of Rock Island, Ill.
Preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two brothers, Julius and Edward von Glan; and two sisters, Ruth Price and Helen Hundling.
Samuel Forrest Harbaugh
Samuel Forrest Harbaugh, 83, died Friday, July 25, 2003 at his residence in Waterloo. Forrest was born June 27, 1920 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Hershel Harold and Stella Mae (Fike) Harbaugh. At the age of 16, he graduated from Orange Township High School and attended McPherson College. He later transferred to Iowa State University, and received a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education in 1940. He later earned a M.S. Degree in Industrial Arts Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1969.
Forrest married Betty Ann Foulkes in 1942 and in 1952 moved to the Hershel Harbaugh farm where he and his father and brother, Merlin, farmed together. Forrest then decided to return to teaching industrial arts and coordinating trade and industrial students at East High School for 12 years until his retirement in 1978.
After the death of his wife he met Dorothy Eleanor Simpson. They were married in 1985. Together they traveled to China, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. With their travel trailer, they enjoyed camping and fishing throughout the U.S. He and Dorothy also volunteered at Covenant Medical Center for over 11 years.
During his retirement years he enjoyed building wood working projects in his shop, gardening, and attending weekly meetings of Crossroads Rotary International.
Forrest is survived by his wife Dorothy, his sister Elva Jean Naylor, his brother Merlin L. Harbaugh, his son James and his daughter Peggy Ann Burnett; 5 step children; 4 grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, and 2 step great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty Ann Foulkes, his sister Lola Mae Nettleton, and his daughter Judy Ann Vallejo.
Evelyn C. Harper
Evelyn C. Harper, 87, of Friendship Village, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at her residence. She was born July 2, 1916 in Waterloo, Iowa, daughter of John and Bertha Jensen Koch.
She married Laurence H. Harper on December 26, 1932. He died November 9, 1998. Evelyn worked as a Hearing Aid Audiologist for Beltone for twelve years.
She was a member of the Waterloo First United Methodist Church. She was also the former Noble Dame of the Waterloo Elklets.
Evelyn is survived by her sons: Alvin and his wife Carolin of Fredericksburg, Texas. Robert of Waterloo. Seven grandchildren and ten great - grandchildren. A brother: Russell Koch and his wife Wanda of Reedsburg, Wisconsin. A half-brother Vern Overbye and his wife Dorothy of Grafton, Wisconsin.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and half-brother, Raymond Overbye.
