Michael Czupil
Surrounded by his adoring family, Michael Czupil, a supportive son, devoted husband, caring father and loving grandfather passed peacefully on November 22, 2007 at Saratoga Hospital. The beloved son of Katherine and Alexander Czupil, Michael was born on September 17, 1920 in a small farm house in Greenfield Center. When Mike was two years old, his father moved the family, including his late sister Helen and brother Walter, to Brooklyn to purse his trade as a tailor. Soon the country life style and natural beauty of Saratoga brought the family back upstate and in 1926 Mike’s father purchased a wonderful farm just off Saratoga Lake.
At an early age, Mike was eager to help work the farm in support of his parents. He quickly exhibited enormous ambition, endless drive, a strong work ethic and an unstoppable desire to “do every job the right way” – characteristics that would define Mike his entire life.
After graduating from the local one room school house, Mike attended Saratoga High School where he earned varsity letters in baseball and soccer. He graduated in 1939.
A carpenter by trade, Mike enjoyed a 35 year career at General Electric Schenectady progressing from team carpenter to foreman and department manager. His numerous skills, dependability, and quality of workmanship also earned Mike outside employment opportunities nights and weekends to further support his family. He always found great joy in being productive.
Mike was admired for his ability to tackle most any project – anything from electrical to plumbing, automotive repair to tree removal, and basic remodeling projects to building the family’s second home almost single handedly.
In 1946, Mike joined other concerned residents and founded the Malta Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Records show Mike filled out the very first application to the department. As a charter member with over 50 years of active service, Mike held the position of assistant chief for thirteen years, trustee for five and vice president for one.
At a local community dance in 1950, Mike met the love his life – Barbara. Married in 1951 at St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls, they spent the next 55 years never far from one another’s side until Barbara’s passing on November 25, 2006. In a lasting show of devotion, Mike had Barbara’s stone engraved with – “Our Love is Forever”.
Warm, generous and inviting people, Mike and Barb were always quick to open their door to company. Whether it was a New Years Eve Party, Fourth of July Picnic, holiday dinner, hand of Pinochle or just good conversation over a beer, Mike loved to visit – a sign in his kitchen reads, “Sit Long, Talk Much”.
Mike and Barb were also active members of the Eagles Club on Lake Lonely, where they enjoyed meeting new friends. They shared more good times boating with family and friends on Saratoga Lake, listening and dancing to music at area night spots like the Swimming Pool Casino, snowmobiling throughout the area countryside, dining at Mangino’s Restaurant, and taking their sons camping in Lake Luzerne and out to movies at the Malta Drive In.
Mike looked forward to deer hunting each fall in Delaware Country and he loved going fishing early mornings on Saratoga Lake or during week long outings at Long Lake. Later in life, Mike enjoyed the many fine activities hosted by Maplewood Manor, going to Bingo at the Elk’s Club with his sons, and attending with great love his granddaughter’s soccer games.
Michael is survived by his sons, Michael S. Czupil and his wife Nancy, Gary Czupil and his wife Paula, Eric Czupil and his wife Debbie, and by his granddaughters, Erin and Payton.
As the ultimate caregiver, the well being of his family was always Mike’s main focus. Mike watched over them constantly ensuring their happiness and well being. He often went without so that family members could benefit.
With his thoughtful protection, Mike brought his family great joy and comfort. Early black and white home movies, and the lasting full color memories that followed, reveal a father who was passionately involved with his family - ultimately enriching each member’s life tremendously.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mike’s wonderful life. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, November 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Armer Funeral Home, 39 East High Street, in Ballston Spa.
