In 1941, Mr. Wandell was drafted into the Army, later saying "the wagon came and we all got on." While in the Army, he was first stationed in Melbourne, Australia. He said the only action he saw there was "the battle of Collins Street" that he described as an altercation between Aussie and American soldiers over the attentions of Australian girls.
Later, he was shipped to Morotai, an island near present Indonesia. While stationed on Morotai, Mr. Wandell was attached to the 155th Station Field Hospital.
In Australia, Mr. Wandell met and married Pat Knowles on Aug. 18, 1944.

The drugstore flourished and in 1965 the Wandel brothers opened a new drug store as part of Hoquiam's urban renewal initiative. An interesting side note about the Wandel brothers was their insistence on spelling their last names differently - Ed Wandell and George Wandel.

With family, Mr. Wandell also enjoyed fishing on the Kenai River in Alaska and clam digging at Ocean Shores.
