Tracy G. Ackley - December 17, 2000
OLYMPIA - Tracy Gay Ackley, who had lived in McCleary for 32 years, died of respiratory failure Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, in the Providence St. Peter Hospital at Olympia. She was 46.
Mrs. Ackley was born March 8, 1954, at Walla Walla to Craig and Jan (Klauk) Ransom. She graduated from Elma High School in 1972.
On Feb. 23, 1973, she married Craig Ackley at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He survives her at the family home.
Mrs. Ackley enjoyed crafts and anything with butterflies. She also liked being around children and was a very social person.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother of Henderson, Nev.; her father of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; a son, Nathan of McCleary; a brother, Kenny Ransom of Gardnerville, Nev., and a sister, Cindy Corcoran of Dickinson, N.D.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma.

Esther Persson - December 18, 2000
OCOSTA - Esther Persson, 92, of Ocosta died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Persson was born July 31, 1908, in Pe Ell to Charles and Anne (Carpenter) Gotchy.
She had lived in Ocosta for 73 years and had worked at a crab cannery in Westport. She was also a homemaker.
Mrs. Persson was an avid sports fan and followed her children and grandchildren in their high school sports.
She also enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens and liked crafts. She made her granddaughters' wedding dresses. She also enjoyed giving gifts and money to people.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Horton of Westport and Arlayne Odle of Ocosta; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
A private graveside service took place in Aberdeen's Fern Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Fern Hill Funeral Home of Aberdeen.

Gail Madison Otis - December 14, 2000
Gail Madison Otis, 45, who was born in Aberdeen and had lived there for 38 years, died of heart failure Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, in Aberdeen.
Mrs. Otis was born March 11, 1955, to LeRoy and Sandra (Seaman) Madison. She graduated from Montesano High School in 1973 and Grays Harbor College in 1992.
On May 15, 1984, she married Don Otis at Bremerton. He survives her in Aberdeen.
Other survivors include her parents in Hoquiam; a daughter, Mersee Madison Villar of Seattle; a brother, Dan Madison of Puyallup, and a sister, Cindy White of the Wishkah.
There will be no service.
Arrangements are by Cascade Services of Washington at Aberdeen.

Gladys E. Baggenstos - December 16, 2000
Gladys Eleanor Baggenstos, who had lived in the Wishkah Valley for 72 years, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in the Grays Harbor Community Hospital Long Term Care facility at Aberdeen. She was 85.
Miss Baggenstos was born Aug. 14, 1915, at South Bend to Martin and Mary (Muller) Baggenstos. She graduated from Aberdeen's Weatherwax High School in 1935 and had also attended Grays Harbor Business College.
She lived in Hoquiam before moving to the Wishkah Valley.
Miss Baggenstos had worked for the Grays Harbor Log Scaling and Grading Bureau and retired in 1979. She had also been employed by the Grays Harbor Paper Co. in Hoquiam.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen and had belonged to the Legion of Mary. She was also associated with Saint Martin's Abbey in Lacey.
She liked gardening and sewing and also painted in oils and pastels.
Miss Baggenstos is survived by her sister, Bernadine of the family home.
Visitation will be until 4 p.m. today at the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Aberdeen. A rosary will follow there at 4:30.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Pe Ell.
Memorial donations are suggested to St. Mary's Feed the Hungry program, 306 E. Third St., Aberdeen, 98520.

Marla 'Perch' Cooper - December 18, 2000
OLYMPIA - McCleary native Marla L. "Perch" Cooper, 40, who had lived in Olympia for two months, died of lung cancer Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in the Providence St. Peter Hospital at Olympia.
Mrs. Cooper was born Jan. 13, 1960, to Harry and Beverly (Davis) Titus.
On May 1, 1976, she married Randy Cooper. He survives her at Portland, Ore.
Mrs. Cooper was an electrical technician for a private business.
She enjoyed water skiing, sewing, working on crafts and gardening.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Titus "TJ" of Olympia; two daughters, Tiffany and Tamarah, both of Olympia; a brother, Larry Titus of Centralia; three sisters, Susie Scherr of Seattle and Peggy Moore and Geri Titus, both of Olympia; her mother of Centralia; her grandparents, Bill and Melba Baker of Elma and Stella Davis of McCleary, and a grandchild.
Her father died before her, and a brother, Bill, died last April.
A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater.
Private burial will be in the Olympic Memorial Gardens at Tumwater.

Neil Chamberlain - December 9, 2000
COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - Aberdeen native Neil Chamberlain, who had lived in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for 36 years, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at home. He was 75.
He was born March 22, 1925, to Charles and Mabel (Rosenberg) Chamberlain. He attended school in Montesano and had also lived in Oregon.
He served in the military during the Korean War.
Mr. Chamberlain had worked for Kootenai Electric in Coeur d'Alene and was retired.
His wife, Linda, survives at Coeur d'Alene.
He was a member of the Kootenai Amateur Radio Club and also enjoyed hunting.
Other survivors include six children, his twin son and daughter, Don of Coeur d'Alene and Donna of Tucson, Ariz., and another twin son and daughter, Dennis of San Jose, Calif., and Denise of Coeur d'Alene, and sons, Dave and Dean, both also of Coeur d'Alene; two sisters, Jean Eager of the Wishkah Valley and Lora Lee Gillard of Bremerton, and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral took place Saturday, Dec. 16, at Coeur d'Alene.
Arrangements were by the Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens Funeral Home at Coeur d'Alene.

Linda M. Miller - December 13, 2000
Linda Marie Miller, 52, who had lived in Aberdeen for a year, died of diabetes Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at her home.
She was born April 18, 1948, at Seattle to Mary Adaline (Osborne) and Roy Bernard Miller. She grew up in Seattle and graduated from Inglemoor High School in 1966. She had also attended Central Washington University.
Miss Miller had also lived in Washington, D.C., where she was employed by the federal government. She had also worked for U.S. West in Seattle and Personal Service Providers at Aberdeen.
She enjoyed her pen pals, bingo, shopping and her dog, Chipper.
She is survived by her brother, Rick of Stanwood.
A memorial service will take place in Seattle. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery at Seattle.
Arrangements are by the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Richard Graham - December 18, 2000
SILETZ - Richard Graham, 60, of Siletz, Ore., whose four siblings live on the Harbor, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Siletz.
Mr. Graham's survivors include two sisters, Karen E. and Nora Huffman, both of Aberdeen; two brothers, Nathan Huffman of Aberdeen and Andrew Huffman of Elma; his wife, Dorothy "Cookie" of Siletz; two sons, Ron and Johnny Mickelsen, both of Winlock; three daughters, Christina Nachtrieb of Concord, Calif., Terry Lee Graham of Martinez, Calif., and Debbie Lee of Rochester, and nine grandchildren.
A service was set for 1 p.m. today at the Siletz Tribal Center. Interment will be in the Paul Washington Cemetery at Siletz.
Arrangements were by the Bateman Funeral Home of Newport.

Ella Phillips - December 21, 2000
RAYMOND - Ella K. Phillips, 97, a Raymond resident for the past 29 years, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, in the Willapa Harbor Care Center at Raymond.
Mrs. Phillips was born May 21, 1903, at Kaycee, Wyo., to Daniel R. and Dora H. (Buessing) Ellis.
On Dec. 21, 1924, she married Lee D. Phillips in Wyoming. He died in 1982.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Raymond Assembly of God.
She is remembered as a devoted homemaker. Her other interests included crocheting and needlepoint.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathy James of Willows, Calif., and Doris Porter of Raymond; three sons, Dan of Mountain Home, Idaho, Paul of Springfield, Ore., and Ray of Westport; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, in the Menlo cemetery. She will be buried beside her husband.
Arrangements are by Stoller's Mortuary of Raymond.

Donald Behnke - December 21, 2000
OCEAN SHORES - Donald A. Behnke, Ocean Shores resident of five years, died of Cancer Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000 in Aberdeen at age 72.
He was born July 25, 1928, in Oregon City, Ore. to Albert and Gladys (Moore) Behnke. He was raised in Eugene, Ore. where he attended high school. He also lived in Anaheim, Calif.
Mr. Behnke married Peggy L. Maddux on July 8, 1951, in Oregon. She survives at the family home.
He served in the Navy during World War II and retired from Southern Pacific Railroad on Oct. 10, 1989 - after 371é2 years of employment.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Springfield, Ore. and enjoyed traveling.
There will be no service.
Arrangements are being handled by Cascade Services of Washington in Aberdeen.

Virginia Smith Burlingame - December 21, 2000
NEWTON - Virginia Smith Burlingame, 90, a long-time Newton resident and graduate of Hoquiam High School, died Thursday, Dec. 21 at the Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Olympia.
Mrs. Burlingame was born on Dec. 10, 1910 in Hoquiam to Jesse and Maude (Davis) Gates, where she graduated from high school in 1929.
She was married to Wesley Smith in 1930. He died before her. She then married Clarence Burlingame in 1966. He died in 1998.
She had been employed by Preble Insurance Agency in Aberdeen for many years, then co-owned and operated the Burlingame Rhododendron Nursery at Newton in the North Beach area until 1996.
She was an avid gardener and canned hundreds of jars of fruits, vegetables and various other items.
Mrs. Burlingame and her husband worked at the Copalis Beach Food Bank where they donated many of their organic vegetables.
She liked to pick wild blackberries and mushrooms and enjoyed digging clams. In her later years, she enjoyed hiking and camping in the Olympic Mountains.
Mrs. Burlingame was a member of the Rhododendron Society. She attended the Copalis Community Church and played the piano there for many years. She enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Franks of Montesano; a stepson, Don Burlingame of Tumwater; a stepdaughter, Jeanie Ames of Olympia; ten grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Duane Gates and George Gates; a sister, Elsie Symons a daughter, Carol Hendrikson.
Visitation will be at the Coleman Mortuary from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24. and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26 in the Coleman Chapel in Hoquiam. A private interment will follow in the Hoquiam Sunset Memorial Park.
Memorials are suggested to the Copalis Beach Food Bank, P.O. Box 279, Copalis Beach, 98535.
Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Mildred E. Greninger - December 21, 2000
Longtime Aberdeen resident Mildred Elizabeth Greninger, 72, died of heart failure Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the family home in Aberdeen.
She was born July 20, 1928, in Crane, Mo., to James and Irene (Eustler) Smith. She was raised in Webb City, Mo. and attended Webb City High School. She moved to Pendleton, Ore., in the '50s and to Elgin, Ore., in the '60s.
Mrs. Greninger married Robert Greninger Sr. March 17, 1946, in Harrisonville, Mo. He survives at the family home.
She was a homemaker and mother of five children. She worked as a Mason shoe salesperson in Oregon and during the '70s she worked as a waitress at the Golden Dragon in Hoquiam.
A walking evangelist, Mrs. Greninger enjoyed writing gospel songs, doing word puzzles and had a great sense of humor. She attended the Montesano Assembly of God church.
She is survived by four sons, Robert and Mark of Aberdeen, Harley of Hoquiam and Kenneth of Montrose, Col.; a daughter, Christy Vizena of Montesano; five brothers, Randy Smith of Pahoe, Hawaii, Jerry Smith of Salem, Ore., Chet Smith of Vanburen, Ark., Bobby Carl Smith and Macke Smith, both of Pendleton, Ore.; two sisters, Esther Paxton and Emma Linfoot, both of Pendleton, Ore. and 14 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26 at the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.
A funeral service is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27 at the Montesano Assembly of God with an interment at the Wynooche Cemetery in Montesano.

Dennis W. Richardson - December 22, 2000
Longtime Hoquiam resident, Dennis W. Richardson, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at an Aberdeen nursing home. He was 84.
He was born June 21, 1916, in Emerald, Wis., to Michael J. and Augusta (O'Keefe) Richardson. One of his grandfathers had been a general for the Union in the Civil War.
The family moved to Hoquiam when he was a child and he attended Our Lady of Good Help's Catholic parochial school, Hoquiam Junior High and Hoquiam High School where he graduated in 1936. He attended college for 21é2 years.
He was employed with Acme Door in Hoquiam as a rafter.
He was inducted into the Army in 1941. He was discharged in 1948 having reached the rank of master sergeant. He qualified as a marksman with the pistol and the carbine rifle.
Following his military discharge, he returned to Hoquiam and worked at Blagen's Mill in Hoquiam until it closed in 1965. He then devoted his life to taking care of his parents and his brother Ernie.
He was a member of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church in Hoquiam. He had been a life member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, the James T. Quigg Council No. 1674 in Hoquiam since 1941. In 1948, he became a fourth-degree member of the Bishop O'Dea Assembly of Knights of Columbus in Hoquiam. He was an active member of many functions of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed ushering during the church Mass.
He was active in Hoquiam High School class reunions and was a member of the Grizzly Alumni Association and the Hoquiam Elks Lodge No. 1082.
For numerous years, he and his brother Ernie traveled to Soap Lake in the summer where they enjoyed the mineral waters and staying at the Royal View Motel. The brothers also attended numerous area boxing matches since Ernie had been a professional boxer in the '30s, and had been known as the "Pride of Hoquiam."
Mr. Richardson learned how to barber from his brother, and he gave many of the residents at a Grays Harbor nursing home haircuts.
He is survived by a nephew, David Richardson of Hoquiam.
He was preceded in death by three brothers George in 1947, David in 1976 and Ernie is 1996. A sister, Mary McMillan, died in 1995.
A vigil is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church in Hoquiam.
A funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the church.
Concluding services with vault interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam.
A fellowship gathering will follow at the church social hall.
Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Dorothy M. Gano - December 20, 2000
PUYALLUP - Dorothy Mae Gano, 87, of McCleary, died of complications from pneumonia Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Puyallup.
She was born April 23, 1913, at Missouri to Walter and Laura (Henson) Fleming. She was raised in Aberdeen and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1931.
In May 1934, she married Don Gano in Aberdeen. He died in 1976.
She lived in Hoquiam before moving to Oakville in 1945 and Elma in 1953. She worked as a secretary at Elma High School for 17 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of the Sharon Grange and enjoyed golf, travel and all kinds of sports.
She is survived by a son, Donald R. Gano of Puyallup; a brother, Ed Fleming of Elma; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Linda Mae Dotson, died in February 2000.
A funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Whiteside Funeral Chapel in Elma. A private graveside service will follow.
Memorial donations are suggested to Elma High School, c/o Superintendent's Office, 1235 Monte-Elma Road, Elma, 98541.
