Arvid Sundberg
IRON MOUNTAIN — Arvid Sundberg, 89, of Aurora, Wis., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Florence Villa Nursing Home.
He was born April 6, 1912 in Homestead, son of the late Charles and Sophie (Johnson) Sundberg. He was a lifelong resident of this area.
He married Maureen Wahlstrom Sundberg on Sept. 4, 1976. She preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 1998.
Arvid served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He worked for Carlson & Goulette, Holmquist & Peterson and retired in 1972. Arvid was a member of the Over 60’s club, the Aurora V.F.W., and attended the Aurora Free Church.
He enjoyed wood carving, fishing, gardening, camping, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by three step-sons, Leonard (Dawn) Wahlstrom of Aurora, Wis., Larry (Mary Gail) Wahlstrom of New Hampshire, and Charles (Pat) Galvan of Homestead, Wis.; three step-daughters, Carol Brown (Chet) Tokoly of Homestead, Gloria (Sidney) Johnson of Marshfield, Wis., and Marlene Wahlstrom of Wausau, Wis.; 16 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Arvid was also preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters.
At Arvid’s request, there will be private family services held at the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.

Linda Carollo
IRON MOUNTAIN — Linda Carollo, 94, of W-7923 Lake Antoine Road S., Breitung Township, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born July 14, 1907, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Elia and Pauline (Caposso) Geromel. She was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain.
Linda was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain and the Christian Mothers/Ladies Guild. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing cards.
She married Bert Carollo on Aug. 5, 1925, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death in 1991.
She leaves three daughters, Delores (Richard) Nocerini, Betty Welcher and Eleanor (Paul) Larson, all of Iron Mountain; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Carollo of Iron Mountain; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Gloria Bramer of Iron Mountain.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Ernest; a son-in-law, Sam Welcher; a granddaughter, Bonita Nocerini; two great-granddaughters, Amanda and Heidi Hansen; three brothers, Eugene, Joe and Callay Geromel; two sisters, Susie Todin and Johanna Geromel, and a special niece, Ann Kell.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home led Deacon Don Christy.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.

Dean Johnson
SKANDIA — Dean Alfred Johnson, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, died at his home on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, after a short battle with cancer, he was 72.
He was born Aug. 13, 1929, in Iron Mountain, to Hilda (Stack) and Leanus Johnson, direct descendants to some of Skandia’s original settlers, Axel Stack and Ole Johnson. His family moved to Ferndale, when he was a child.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in Ferndale in 1948, after lettering in football and excelling in baseball, where he was actively recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals.
He married Rose Marie LaBelle from Royal Oak, lower Michigan, in 1950. Longing to return to his roots, he moved his family back to the Upper Peninsula in 1960. The family lived in Marquette for a year while he built the family home near his ancestors original homestead in Skandia.
Dean was one of the founding members of the Skandia/West Branch Volunteer Fire Department. In 2001 he received a commendation for 38 years of dedicated service. He also served on many local charitable organizations such as the Moose Lodge, Oscar II and the Lions Club. He was very active supporting many fund-raising events for the community. In 1992, he received the Citizen of the Year Award at the Skandia Centennial Celebration.
Deano chose plumbing as his profession early in life and joined the Plumbers Union Local 414/506 early in his career. In the late 1970s he became a master licensed plumber and started his own business. Due to his reputation for excellence, he assisted in building many prominent local (and regional) commercial and recreational facilities. Many of his construction sites are well-known in the area such as KI Sawyer AFB and the expansion of Marquette General Hospital. In addition to his commercial business, he donated many hours of service to the Skandia Township community as well as to those in need.
An avid sportsman and outdoorsman, Big Dean’s energy and passion for life came from being outdoors with nature. Fishing and hunting were an integral part of his life. His strength came from living within the borders of the Upper Peninsula and the beauty of its land, its people and its wildlife. He loved country music and his guitar and a good ole country song were never far away from him.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brothers, Elmer, Norbert, Ted and Art; a sister, Annie, and great-grandson, Nathanial Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rose (Rosie); his daughters, Cheryl and husband, Steve Cristanelli of Longmont, Colo., Lynn and husband, Lon Preston of Three Rivers, Caron Johnson of Lakewood, Colo., Connie and husband, Jeff Zottola of Heidelberg, Germany, and Tina Johnson of Skandia; his grandchildren, Ryan, Lorien, Lona, Lorinda, Jessica, Sara, Joshua and Dominic; a sister, Marion and husband, Larry Johnson of Clinton Township, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. (Eastern time) Tuesday at at the Skandia Methodist Church, 189 Kreiger Drive, Skandia.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. A luncheon will be held immediately after the service at the Skandia Community Building, 224 Kreiger Drive, Skandia.
A private cremation service will be held for the family at a later date.
His family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Lake Superior Hospice (especially Pat Mair, Linda Lake and Cheryl DePlanche), members of the Skandia/West Branch Township Volunteer Fire Department and the many friends who visited, provided comfort and prayers to our family during this difficult time. Your generous gifts of love and support will always be treasured.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Skandia/West Branch Fire Department or First Responders.

Robert Calvi
IRON MOUNTAIN — Robert C. Calvi, 79, of 1504 West C St., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his home.
Robert was born June 6, 1922, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Keeler and Myrtle (Chappell) Calvi. He had been a resident of the area his entire life.
He entered the U.S. Navy in June of 1942 and was honorably discharged in December of 1946.
Robert owned and operated Quality Hardware Store, now known as True Value from 1946 to 1976. After selling the hardware store, he went to work for Dickinson Homes, retiring in 1980.
He married Ila Madson Stevens on Nov. 5, 1960, in Wakefield.
Robert was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Kingsford and Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain. He enjoyed hunting, archery, Canadian fishing trips and golfing.
He was very handy with carpentry, he could fix anything.
Robert enjoyed going to camp to play cards with his friends.
He will be sadly missed by those who knew him.
Robert leaves his wife, Ila; four sons, Terry (Sandy) Calvi of Kingsford, James Calvi (fiancee, Kristine Coopman) of Kingsford, David (Susan) Stevens of Land O Lakes, Wis., and Jeffrey (Lana) Stevens of Jackson, Wis.; a daughter, Sandy (Bob) Smith of Quinnesec; a sister, Mary Payne of Muskegon, lower Michigan; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Calvi.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Rev. Harold Faust will officiate.
The burial of ashes will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Martha Dams
IRON RIVER — Martha Dams, 68, of Iron River passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Martha was born Oct. 11, 1932, in Stambaugh, daughter of the late John and Sophia (Halberg) Waino. She attended the Stambaugh Township schools and graduated from Stambaugh High School.
She enjoyed being surrounded by her family and friends. She especially enjoyed her time spent with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Martha enjoyed baking for her family and friends, and loved crossword puzzles and knitting.
She was always making new friends wherever she went and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Martha was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Iron River.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Joe, Olaf, Ted, Toivo and Leonard Waino, and a sister, Sylvia Perry.
She leaves two sons, Edward (Donna) Dams of Florence, Wis., and Steven Dams of Iron River; two daughters, Judy (Tom) Vonck of Appleton, Wis., and Karen (Bill) Kollmann of Quinnesec; a sister, Fannie (Arnold) Gallup of Iron River; eight grandchildren, Nicole Dams, Kevin, Breanna and Kelly Vonck, Michael Guye, Dina Kollmann, Lori Ann Kollmann and T.J. Dams, and a great-granddaughter, Sally Kay.
Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Rev. Martin Koeller will officiate. Chaplain David Anderson will speak at the funeral service.
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River.
Pallbearers will be Charles Dams, Glen Koski, David Waino, Robert Gallup, Jay Waino and John Waino.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Vonck and Michael Guye.

Jeffery Peterson
KINGSFORD — Jeffery Paul Peterson, 40, of Comfort, Texas, formerly of Kingsford, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001.
Jeff was born April 5, 1961, in Kingsford, son of Buzz (Lloyd) and Marcia (Clement) Peterson. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1979 and went on to Michigan Technological University for his engineering degree.
He moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1984, and had lived there for the past 17 years.
Jeff was an avid outdoorsman, golfer and University of Michigan fan.
He spent many hours designing, what he felt, was the ultimate “dream golf course.”
He leaves his wife, Kristine of Comfort; a daughter, Sydney Lynn Peterson of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; a stepson, Matthew; his parents, Buzz (Lloyd) and Marcia Peterson of Kingsford; a brother, Michael (Denice) Peterson of Wind Lake, Wis.; his sisters, Ann (Bruce) Olson and Kathy (Steve) Barnes, both of Kingsford, Linda (Gale) Michaud of Quinnesec and Kim (Todd) Collins of Aurora, Ill.; his nieces and nephews, Sara and Stacy Olson, Matthew, Andrew and Josh Peterson, Kristina and Derek Barnes, Anthony and Emily Collins, Brandon (Jamie), Daniel, Cole and Abby Michaud; several aunts and uncles, Dr. Stephen (Danielle) Clement and John (Betty) Clement, both of San Antonio, Eugene (Chris) Peterson of Kingsford, Karen Peterson of Norway and Beverly Winters of Kingsford, and a paternal grandmother, Grace Rumpf Peterson of Kingsford.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Lloyd Peterson, and by his maternal grandparents, Dr. Joseph and Muriel Clement.
A private family visitation will held Thursday at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
Public funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Peter Brien MM and Fr. Paul Brien MM will co-officiate.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship will be established in his memory.

Elmer Gedvick
NORWAY — Elmer H. Gedvick, 87, of Norway died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at his home.
He was born March 1, 1914, in Foster City, son of the late Hemming and Hilma (Bloomquist) Gedvick. He graduated from Felch High School in 1933.
After graduation he traveled out west logging.
He married Edytha Shelgren on July 5, 1941, in Idaho. She preceded him in death on Dec. 11, 1980.
Elmer and Edytha moved back to Foster City after their marriage and he worked as a logger for 34 years. During that time he also worked for Morning Glory, Asselin Creamery and Bancroft Dairy.
He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Norway.
Elmer enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He leaves his sons, Richard (Elizabeth) Gedvick and Jerry (Sue) Gedvick of Norway; his daughters, Laural (Aaron) St. John of Powers and Gail (Lenny) Moraska of Norway; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Darlene) Grunlund of Norway; his sisters, Ruth (Ed) Matteson of Chicago and Bernice (Bob) Anderson of El Paso, Texas; his sisters-in-law, Doris Smithson of Kingsford and Ruth Hirn of Kingsford; his brothers-in-law, Chester Shelgren of Stambaugh and Orval Shelgren of Idaho, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Frank Henning Grunlund; his grandson, Arlan St. John; his brothers, Oliver, Leonard and Thorsten Gedvick and Holger and Summer Grunlund, and his sisters, Astrid Opperman and Jeanette Burkman.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Miner Funeral Home in Norway.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. James Danielson, pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Norway Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Evangelical Covenant Church or Marquette General Home Health and Hospice.

James Quick
KINGSFORD — James J. Quick, 77, formerly of Kingsford, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
James was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Escanaba, son of the late George and Francis (Maynard) Quick.
He married Dolores Dykstra on April 7, 1951, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death on June 27, 1996.
James worked in the mines in Ishpeming and Idaho for years. He then took a maintenance job with Grede Foundry before retiring in 1980.
He lived in the area his entire life.
James loved to hunt and fish and was an avid outdoorsman.
He leaves his five daughters, Barbara (Ray) Jutila of Ishpeming, Nola Rautio of Lake Geneva, Wis., Sheila (Steve) Wood of Iron Mountain, Rhonda (Tom) Trottier of Niagara,Wis., and Cindy (Dave) Fisher of Kingsford; three brothers, Robert Quick of Kingsford, George (Caroline) Quick of Iron Mountain and Peter (Joyce) Quick of Milwaukee; three sisters, Gladys Sorenson of Iron Mountain, Betty Smokavitz of Kingsford and Louise Aronson of Iron Mountain; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Annette Perry, and a granddaughter, Nichole Lynn Trottier.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at noon at Thursday at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Burial will be in Quinnesec Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ray Jutila, Steve Wood, Tom Trottier, and Dave Fisher.

Gerald Larson
AURORA, Wis. — Gerald M. Larson, 85, of Aurora, Wis., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Iron Mountain, son of the late George Larson and Hilma (Mickelson) Larson. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Iron Mountain High School.
He married the former Opal Peronto on March 15, 1941, at Wesley Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. They were married for 60 years.
Gerald proudly served during World War II in the Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion as a heavy equipment operator. He was honorably discharged from the service in October 1945 and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operation Service Medal.
He was employed at Elmer’s Hardware Store for 19 years and later worked for Proksch Construction. His last job was with Mueller Pipeline and he retired in 1978.
Gerald was a member of the Aurora Free Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3635 of Florence, Wis. He served for many years as a youth 4-H leader for horsemanship and his whole life revolved around his love for horses.
He leaves his wife, Opal; his daughters, Bonnie (David) Schneider of Niagara, Wis., and Karen (Marcel) Vinyeta of Green Bay, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kerri (Ed) Olson of Iron Mountain, Amy (Scott) Servais of Kingsford, Mark (Elizabeth) Vinyeta of Barcelona, Spain, and Kirsten Vinyeta of Green Bay, Wis.; two great-grandsons, Cody Hakala of Iron Mountain and his namesake Gerald Vinyeta of Barcelona, Spain, and a brother, Ralph.
Those of us who really knew Gerald will truly miss him.
Visitation was held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Pastor Carl Utzat of the Aurora Free Church, will officiate. After funeral service Gerald was taken home and then was taken by horse-drawn carriage to his final resting place, Aurora-Homestead Cemetery. Graveside services were held at the cemetery.
Complimentary lunch was served at the Aurora Free Church.
Pallbearers were Lewis Maxson, Ken Osterberg, Chad Hedmark, Ted Johnson, Mark Larson and Ken Ellis.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Agnes Kent
SKOKIE, Ill. — Agnes R. Kent, 87, of Evanston, Ill., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Evanston.
Agnes and Orval Kent were born and raised in Iron Mountain. Kent Street in Iron Mountain was named after Orval’s grandfather, the second mayor of Iron Mountain.
She was the beloved wife of the late Orval C. Kent; loving mother of Vincent (Olivia), Richard (Patricia), Kristin (Dennis) Wilson, David (Vivian), Mary (David) Baird, and Anne (Jeffrey) Kelson; dear grandmother of 14; great-grandmother of 12.
She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Bill Rocheleau of Iron Mountain and a sister-in-law, Erma Rocheleau of Iron Mountain.
Visitation was will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Road, Skokie.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, 1077 Tower Road, Winnetka.
Private entombment will be in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum.

Kaino Salmi
EBEN JUNCTION — Kaino Salmi, 69, of 925 Dodge St., Houghton, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the Jacobetti Veterans Facility in Marquette after a year long battle with cancer.
Kaino was born Aug. 22, 1932, in Eben, son of the late Andrew and Mary Salmi. He attended school in Eben.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry in Korea and Japan.
Kaino worked for CCI and later spent 30 years as a plumber/pipefitter for Local 414 in Marquette. Following his retirement, he lived in Skandia.
In 1996, he married Nell Markham Anderson of Iron Mountain and in 1999, they moved to Houghton.
He was a member of Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church.
Kaino was an avid Lions and Tigers fan and he enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting and going out for breakfast.
He is survived by his wife, Nell; four children, Tena (Tom) Bailey of Beaver Grove, Sheila (Norman “Sonny”) Bonner of Munising, Kim (Tina) Salmi of Negaunee and Roxane Salmi of Roseville; eight grandchildren, Chad, Shane, Josh, Breanna and Joy Salmi, and Justin, Beau and Adam McGree; a brother, Oswald (Norma) Salmi of Rumely; a sister, Cindy Niemi of Eben, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Stacey; his brothers, Eugene and Sulo Salmi; half-brother, Leslie Salmi, and half-sisters, Sygne Hendrickson and Edith Coponen.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Rev. Reuben Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham, where the Ikkala Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will conduct a veterans graveside service.

Mildred Anderson
CASPIAN — Mildred Greenwood Anderson, 92, of Caspian, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.

Daniel Strassburg
IRON MOUNTAIN — Daniel Strassburg, 51, of W-9360 Brice Creek Lane, Sagola, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, as a result of a car accident on U.S. 2 in Florence County.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Voorhees-Siple FUneral Home in Pontiac. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Vielmetti
IRON MOUNTAIN — Elizabeth Shepard Renn Vielmetti of Craigie Street in Portland, Maine, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in a Portland hospital following a brief illness.
She is the beloved daughter of Thomas R. and Elizabeth (Thomas) Renn.
A memorial service will be held in Iron Mountain at a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Springlake Humane Society, W8459 Shelter Drive, Iron Mountain, Mich. 49801.

Donald Charette
KINGSFORD — Donald “Butch” Charette Jr., 47, of 412 Beech St., Kingsford, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born April 27, 1954, in Iron Mountain, son of Nancy (Poupore) Charette and the late Donald Charette Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Kingsford and a graduate of Kingsford High School.
He married the former Susan Kay Wickman on July 29, 1972.
Don owned and operated J.D. Welding in Kingsford and had previously worked for Lake Shore Inc.
His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his wife and family at his camp. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed taking rides in the fall.
Don was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Charette; a son, Craig (Traci) Charette of Kingsford; a daughter, Carrie Charette (Jerome Romitti) of Niagara, Wis.; his mother, Nancy Charette of Kingsford; maternal grandmother, Phyllis Poupore of Maryhill Manor in Niagara; two brothers, Rodney (Kathy) Charette and John Charette, both of Kingsford; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ken and Pat Wickman of Iron Mountain; four grandchildren, Zackury Gardiepy, Katelyn Charette, and Joshua and Niko Romitti; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Gedvick
NORWAY — Elmer H. Gedvick, 87, of Norway, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at his home.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Miner Funeral Home in Norway.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. James Danielson, pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.

James Trempe
FLORENCE, Wis. — James O. Trempe, 79, of 424 Spring St., Florence, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at his home.
He was born April 27, 1922, in Iron Mountain, son of the late August and Anna (Gulke) Trempe. He was a lifelong resident of Florence and a 1940 graduate of Florence High School.
James served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged.
He married the former Minnie “Chris” Bryant on July 11, 1945, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain.
James worked for Florence County doing clerical work for 29 years and retired in 1981.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Florence.
James enjoyed hunting, fishing and dearly loved his family.
He leaves his wife, Minnie “Chris;” a daughter, Carol (William) Gardiner of Arkansas; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judy Ann Trempe, and two brothers, William and Roger Trempe.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence. Prayers will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence. Fr. Michael Betley will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Commonwealth, Wis.
The family is being served by the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence.
