SPALDING — Lester M. Percifield, 87, of Powers died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain following a lengthy illness.

Hubert Lucarelli
KINGSFORD — Hubert “Luke” Lucarelli, 87, of 320 Wilson Ave., died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Freeman Convalescent Home in Kingsford.
Mr. Lucarelli was born May 12, 1914, in Vulcan, son of the late Adolph and Rose (Turchi) Lucarelli. He had been a lifelong resident of the area.
He married his wife, the former Gladys Olson on Sept. 28, 1939, in Kingsford. They had been married for 62 years.
He and his wife had owned and operated Lukes Gem Bar on Harding Avenue for 17 years. He also worked for Wittock Supply Co. and U.P. Electric.
Mr. Lucarelli was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in Kingsford, the Pine Grove Country Club, United Commercial Travelers and a former Golden K Kiwanis Club member. He had been a member of the Elks Club in Iron Mountain for more than 50 years.
He loved hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer and sports fan.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Tinti and Emma Ruffato.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two sons, Hubert “Butch” (Loretta) Lucarelli of Holland, lower Michigan and David (Barbara) Lucarelli of Rockford, lower Michigan; a brother, Eugene Lucarelli of Southgate, lower Michigan; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Private family visitation and funeral services are being held. Fr. Paul Nomellini will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Gordon McLeod
SPALDING — Gordon McLeod, 71, of Spalding died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain, following a brief illness.
He was born on Sept. 5, 1930, in Escanaba, son of the late Archie and Myrtle (Allen) McLeod. He resided in Bark River, Carney and Perkins.
Gordon married the former Charlotte Rieg on Sept. 25, 1950, in Rockford, Ill..
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army.
Gordon was self-employed much of his life and would tell his friends that he was a simple jockey of trades and a master of none. Those that knew him would tell you different. He was self-taught in the trades and a master of most of them.
He enjoyed working with his children and playing with his grandchildren, chatting with friends over a cup of coffee at the Redwood, wintering in Arizona and taking rides in the evening in search of the whitetail.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Charlotte; two daughters, Julie McLeod of Spalding and Vicky (Rob) Cryderman of Spalding; two sons, Randy McLeod of Wilson and Ricky (Karen) McLeod of Wilson; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Dan (Joyce) McLeod of Illinois, and five sisters, Helen Miller of Spalding, Jessie Beaudoin of Green Bay, Wis., Elorine Strom of Kingsford, Marion Francis of Arizona and Eva Stokton of Arizona.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, David and Gordon Jr.; a sister, Pat Camp, and three brothers, Archie, Laurin and Jimmy.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Allo Funeral Home of Spalding.
Services celebrating the life of Gordon will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel.
Burial will be in the McLeod Family Cemetery.
Noah Spigarelli
IRON MOUNTAIN — Noah Spigarelli, 89, of 110 W. Stanton St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Oct. 29, 1911, in Iron Mountain, son of the late John and Victoria (Nocerini) Spigarelli. He was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain.
Mr. Spigarelli was a master electrician and had worked at the Ford Motor Co. and was a self-employed contractor.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mr. Spigarelli loved fishing, hunting, traveling, camping and making projects with a lathe.
He married the former Anna L. Ruffatto on Sept. 30, 1933, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 1997.
He is survived by two sons, Noah Gary (Marilyn) of Rogers, Ark. and Robert John (Delores) of Vero Beach, Fla.; a brother, Orlando (Beulah) of Iron Mountain; a sister, Eleanor Henley of Coon Valley, Wis.; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond; three brothers, Ortanzo, Peter and Oliver; and a sister, Ann Spigarelli.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
Pallbearers will be Steven Spigarelli, Gary Flees, Michael Flees, Nicole Flees and Lynn Sternhagen.

Raymond Smith Sr.
IRON RIVER — Raymond Smith Sr., 67, of Watersmeet passed away on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at the Seasons of Life Hospice House of Woodruff, Wis.
He was born June 7, 1934, in Mole Lake, Wis., son of the late John and Daisy (Poler) Smith. He attended school in Mole Lake and Flandreau, S.D.
Mr. Smith was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War.
After his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Watersmeet. In 1955, he moved from Watersmeet to Milwaukee, returning to Watersmeet in later years.
Mr. Smith was employed by Lac Vieux Desert as a medical transporter for the tribal community.
He was an avid sports fan.
Mr. Smith was a very active member of the Assembly of God Church in Iron River.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Henry and Frank Smith.
He leaves five sons, Jonathon (Susan) McGeshick of Watersmeet, Raymond Smith Jr. of Watersmeet, Henry (Vickie) Smith of Iron River, Evan Smith of Watersmeet and Chad Smith of Iron River; twin daughters, Joan (Paul) McCallum of Scandia, Minn., and June Smith of Nevada, Iowa; two brothers, Edwin (Shirley) Smith of Green Bay, Wis., and Earl Smith of Crandon, Wis.; four sisters, Annabelle McGeshick of Watersmeet, Marie Douyette of Crandon, Wis., Cory Douyette of Milwaukee and Betty White of Crandon; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and visitations will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Watersmeet Spiritual Center and at the Mole Lake Bingo Hall, Mole Lake, Wis. at 2 p.m. with Rev. Herbert Kolenda, pastor of the Assembly of God Church of Iron River, to officiate.
Burial will be in Mole Lake Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded by the Forest County Veterans and the Veterans of the Tribal Community.

Micheal Tirschel
IRON MOUNTAIN — Micheal L. Tirschel, 53, of 806 West B St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born Sept. 19, 1948, in Milwaukee, son of James and Faye (Gustafson) Tirschel. He grew up in Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1966.
Micheal went on to attend Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba and Northern Michigan University in Marquette, where he received a degree in history.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from May 9, 1972 until his retirement on May 31, 1992. While in the service he and his family lived in many places including Germany for three years. After retiring from the service, Micheal went to work for the U.S. Post Office. He worked from 1992 until he was diagnosed with cancer in 1996.
Micheal put up a courageous battle with cancer and was an inspiration to his family and friends during this time.
He will be sadly missed by all.
Micheal was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of Iron Mountain.
He had many hobbies including traveling, camping, spending time with his dog, Missy, and most of all being with his granddaughter, Karen.
Micheal is survived by a son, Micheal James Tirschel of Iron Mountain; a daughter, Sonya (Jerry) Hamm of Iron Mountain; his parents, James and Faye Tirschel of Iron Mountain; a sister, Gaylyn (Al) Ziehm of Kingsford; someone very special, his only granddaughter, Karen Proudfit, who was the love of his life; two nephews, Kyle (Amy) Ziehm of Iron Mountain and Joe Paul Plourde of Iron Mountain; a niece, Jennifer Massicotte of Iron Mountain; many aunts, uncles and cousins, and a special friend and mother of his children, Janet.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Kelly (Ziehm) of Massicotte.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion of Iron Mountain will offer a veteran’s memorial service at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Pastor Meredith Rupe will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Gustafson, Erick Gustafson, Kyle Ziehm, Dave Paquette, Al Ziehm and Joe Paul Plourde.

Judith Bradley
IRON MOUNTAIN — Judith Bradley, 85, of Iron Mountain died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
She was born May 12, 1916, in Homestead, Wis., daughter of the late Adolph and Hannah (Johnson) Olson. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1934.
On Feb. 10, 1934, she married John Bradley. They lived in Kingsford and after retirement spent many winters in Florida. In 1987, she moved to Iron Mountain.
She was a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Kingsford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1985; her son, Wayne Bradley, in 1997; six brothers, Rueben, Sigurd, Beyer, Elmer, Harold and Lawrence and three sisters, Ruth, Signe and Esther.
She leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Orville Brooks of Breitung Township; nine grandchildren, Nick Bradley, Jennifer Bradley, Donna Brooks, John Brooks, Gary (Carolyn) Brooks, Myra Brooks, Shannon Brooks, Myron Secrest and Mary (James) Quick; six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Rev. James Danielson will officiate.

Norman Mainville
NORWAY — Norman J. Mainville, 77, of 304 Norway St., Norway, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born June 5, 1924, in Kingsford, son of the late Norman and Catherine (Kline) Mainville. He was raised in this area.
Norman was an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He started East Kingsford Iron & Metal Co. and Mainville Shredding. After selling his business, he traveled extensively around the world. He homesteaded land near Mt. Mckinley, Alaska, and was a frequent visitor to that area.
Norm loved hunting and fishing.
He was a lifetime member of the National Sheriff’s Association. For many years he was active in law enforcement and served as a Dickinson County Sheriff’s deputy and sergeant.
During his lifetime he generously contributed to many local organizations and charities.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Caroline; a son, Joseph; a daughter, Paula; a brother, Garland Mainville, and a sister, Carmen Valentine.
Norm is survived by two sons, James Mainville of Lansing and Eugene Mainville of Duluth, Minn.; two stepsons, Keith Stachowicz and Matthew (Tracy) Stachowicz of Crystal Falls; four daughters, Ann Mainville-Thompson of Norway, Lois (Tab) Hughes of Grand Junction, Colo., Carmen Mainville of Anaheim, Calif., and Patricia (Wayne) Stangler of Syracuse, Utah; two stepdaughters, Mary (Jeff) Toivonen of Crystal Falls and Karen (Jeff) Kates of Chicago; a brother, Bernard (Dorothy) Mainville of Kingsford; three sisters, Earldene Johnson of Kingsford, Lois (Robert) Rice of Kingsford and Frances (Robert) Gussert of Iron Mountain; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Renn Vielmetti
IRON MOUNTAIN — Elizabeth Shepard/Renn Vielmetti, 53, of Craigie Street, Portland, Maine, died Thursday evening, Sept. 27, 2001, in a Portland hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Iron Mountain, beloved daughter of Thomas R. and Elizabeth (Thomas) Renn.
Mrs. Vielmetti was educated in Iron Mountain schools and graduated from Ferry Hall School in Lake Forest, Ill. She also graduated from the University of Denver with the Class of 1969.
She lived and worked in Los Angeles, Calif. for several years before moving to Portland in 1978. Mrs. Vielmetti was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital and was a former member of the Portland Country Club. She loved spending time with her dog, Bailey.
She is survived by her parents, Thomas R. and Elizabeth Renn of Iron Mountain; three sisters, Kristina R. (James) Andes of Iron Mountain, Ann C. Renn of Iron Mountain and Nancy R. Waltz of Denver, Colo.; nieces and nephews including, Pamela (Randy) Veeneman of Breckenridge, Colo., Thomas Andes of Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth and Jameson Waltz of Denver, Colo., Mark Andes of Orlando, Fla., Karen (Wayne) Gasbarro of Orlando, Fla. and Brian (Theresa) Andes of St. Bonifacius, Minn.; great-nephews, Dominic and Dallan Gasbarro and David Andes; and great-nieces, Rachel Andes and Adrienne Gasbarro.
A memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home in Portland. The Rev. Philip Shearman officiated.
A memorial service will also be held on Friday in Iron Mountain at 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Lucille Peterson
IRON MOUNTAIN — Lucille Peterson, 86, of 1624 River St., Niagara, Wis., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at her home.
She was born March 10, 1915, in Niagara, daughter of the late Dominic and Mabel (Ebidon) Darne. She was a lifelong resident of Niagara and graduated from Niagara High School in 1933.
Lucille later graduated from Green Bay Business College.
She married Harland S. Glaser and he preceded her in death in August of 1952. She then married Herbert Peterson and he preceded her in death in June of 1997.
Lucille worked as a bank teller for the First National Bank of Niagara until her retirement.
She was a member of the Riverside Methodist Church in Niagara.
Lucille was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, crossword puzzles and reading. She met monthly with a group of retired bank ladies for lunch.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Orland, Lester and Claude Darne; a sister, Eva Buchman, and a granddaughter, Rebecca Wright.
She leaves a daughter, Rosanne Wright of Niagara; two sisters, Clarice (Ray) McEwan of Minnesota and Eloise (Jim) Murtha of Iowa; a granddaughter, Laurie Wright, active Air Force, temporary duty, Turkey; great-grandson, D’Jon Camell, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Riverside Methodist Church in Niagara.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Pastor Patricia Nolet will officiate.

Harold Smith
IRON MOUNTAIN — Harold A. Smith, 81, of W-8041 Old Carney Lake Road, Breitung Township, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
Harold was born April 9, 1920, in Antigo, Wis., son of the late William and Myrtle (Johnson) Smith.
He served two tours of duty with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations as part of the 700th Quartermaster Corp.
Harold worked at Grede Foundry in Kingsford in the cleaning room for more than 30 years, retiring in 1985.
He enjoyed reading, gardening and making maple syrup.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Marvin; a grandson, Benjamin Johnson; a brother, Bill, and three sisters, Marian, Genevieve and Evangeline.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Marjean (Roger) Johnson of Virginia, Minn., and Roxann (Rick) Hornik of Breitung Township; four brothers, Howard Smith of Wallace, Menominee County, Bob Smith of Urbana, Texas, Jim Smith of Corsicana, Texas, and Bert Smith of Fairfield, Calif.; three sisters, Myrtle Meyer of Augusta, Ga., Florence Kinsey of Marinette, Wis., and Hildi Madahgian of Racine, Wis.; four grandchildren, Peter and Jonathan Johnson, Anna and Oskar Hornik, and many nieces and nephews.
Private family service are being held at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Rev. Bruce Linscheid will officiate.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

Marion Sacotte
WAUSAUKEE, Wis. – Marion Louise Sacotte, 82, of Pembine, Wis., died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Sacotte came to Pembine as a child and lived there most of her life. She was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Plymouth, Wis., daughter of Walter and Clara (Ramminger) Luth.
She married Charles Sacotte in Iron Mountain on April 11, 1942. He preceded her in death in September of 1992.
Mrs. Sacotte was the first woman elder in the Pembine Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail (Dale) Fick of Amberg, Wis. and Jean Wollenberg of Oshkosh, Wis.; a son, Gary (Kathy) Sacotte of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents; and her daughter, Julie.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Pembine.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Jess Stoopes will officiate. Burial will be in the Pembine Cemetery.

Frieda Paternoster
IRON MOUNTAIN — Frieda H. Paternoster, 93, of 504 E. Smith St., Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Frieda was born Nov. 5, 1907, on the family farm in Daggett, daughter of the late Albert and Hulda (Glazer) Klatt.
She married Lawrence Sleik in 1925. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1931. On June 1, 1932, she married Oliver Paternoster and he preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 1975.
Frieda worked at the City Bakery in Iron Mountain for more than 25 years.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain and the Audubon Society.
Frieda also loved playing cards and visiting with her friends at the Iron Mountain Senior Center.
She is survived by five sons, Doug (Gloria) Sleik of Iron Mountain, Donald (Margaret) Sleik of Naperville, Ill., Oliver (Ardith) Paternoster of Sussex, Wis., Norman (Jacqlyn) Paternoster of Iron Mountain and Terry (Dee) Paternoster of Boise, Idaho; three daughters, Maxine (Robert) Gothe of Kingsford, Sandra (Chuck) Macy of Iron Mountain and Sharon (Hans) Strom of Colgate, Wis.; 36 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence Sleik and Wayne Paternoster; two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

NORWAY — Patricia A. Alessandrini, 73, of Norway died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born April 25, 1928, in Milwaukee, daughter of the late Ann Alessandrini-Driscoll and stepdaughter of the late Gordon Driscoll Sr.
Patricia was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway, Daughters of Isabella and Norway-Vulcan Senior Center.
She worked at Norway Needle Craft and Norway Gravure Printing Plant in Norway for 13 years.
Patricia enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling.
She is survived by her uncle, Michael (Virginia) Alessandrini; a sister-in-law, Arlene Driscoll; her nephews, Steven (Karen) Driscoll, Dennis Driscoll, Gary (Marlene) Driscoll and Scott (Lisa) Driscoll, and her cousins, John (Shirley) Baravetto, LaVonne (Al) Anderson, Betty Roggeman-Bittner, Ronald (Kathy) Roggeman, Kenneth (Patti) Roggeman, Raymond (Marlene) Alessandrini and Cornelius Alessandrini Jr.
Patricia was also preceded in death by special grandparents, Albino and Marie Alessandrini; a brother, Gordon Driscoll Jr.; her aunts, Lena Clemans, Julia Roggeman and Josephine Alessandrini, and her uncles, Art Alessandrini, Guedo “Geeks” Alessandrini and Cornelius Alessandrini.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Miner Funeral Home in Norway. Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. and parish prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway. Fr. Leonard Cornelius will officiate.
Burial will follow in Norway Township Cemetery.
Leonard Mitrenga
MINNEAPOLIS — Leonard A. Mitrenga was born in Chicago on Feb. 20, 1922, and died in Minneapolis on Sept. 28, 2001.
He will be remembered as a loving, doting grandfather and father. His love for his family was immeasurable and constant.
Len served in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations until he was honorably discharged in 1946.
Following his military service, Len began work as an apprentice butcher for Hillman’s Food Stores. He became a journeyman after serving a one-year apprenticeship. He remained at Hillman’s until he retired in 1984.
Len was always involved in and excelled at sports as evidenced by the number of trophies he earned. He continued playing golf well into his retirement and introduced his grandchildren to the game early in their lives.
Of everything Len was in his lifetime, he will be forever remembered for his kindness and gentleness.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, whom he had been married to for 50 years.
He is survived by his son, Larry (Fay), and his daughters, Kathy (Eric) Mahnerd, Gail (Tom) D’Autremont and Ann (Jim) Proudfoot. Len also leaves behind two sisters, Florence Makowski and Leonard (Andy) Babka, in addition to two brothers, Dick (Lorraine) Mitrenga and Ernie (Theresa) Mitrenga.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the chapel of the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Minneapolis and his ashes will be interred with a military honor guard at Ford Snelling on Oct. 17.
