Arnold Belongie
GAASTRA — Arnold R. Belongie, 81, of 177 Clements Drive, Gaastra, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Iron County General Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1920, in Pentoga, son of the late Philip and Laura (Vincent) Belongie. He grew up in Bates where he attended school.
Mr. Belongie served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and following his honorable discharge, returned to the local area.
He was employed as an iron miner for the Hanna Mining Co. in their local mines for 32 years, retiring from the Groveland Mine when it closed.
He married the former Virginia Mahoski Kolbas on Sept. 18, 1971, and the couple made their home in Gaastra.
Mr. Belongie was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Caspian, the Alfred Branchini Post of the American Legion in Iron River, the Disabled American Veterans, the Iron River Elks Lodge and the Michigan Sheriff’s Association.
Arnold was also an avid gardner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Susan (Henry) Stefanski of Avon, Ohio and Barbara (Rae Jim) Burnett of Haslett, lower Michigan; two stepdaughters, Kim (Don) Aregoni of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. and Terese (Mark) Sabotta of Iron River; two stepsons, Tony Kolbas of Caspian and Peter (Michele) Kolbas of Iron River; one sister, Luella Sawyer of Mosinee, Wis.; seven grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home - Iron River Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at 2 p.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Caspian. The Rev. Fr. Norm Clisch, pastor, and the Rev. Fr. Otto Sartorelli will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.
Members of the West Side Veterans Council will accord military rites at the church following the funeral Mass.

Antoinette Roman
IRON RIVER — Antoinette F. Roman, 85, of Iron River passed away on Oct. 11, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Roman was born June 2, 1916, in Pentoga, Iron County, daughter of the late Daniel and Bertha (Belongie) Briggs. She was a lifelong resident and attended the Pentoga and Stambaugh schools, graduating in 1934. She also attended one year of college.
She married George Roman on Sept. 14, 1940, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Gaastra. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1990.
Mrs. Roman was a clerk for the Skog Dress Shop and later years with Central Music and Hobbies. In 1936, she went to Washington, D.C., representing the state of Michigan as a 4-H delegate. She was a 4-H leader for many years and was the superintendent of the 4-H building at the Iron County Fair.
In addition, she also taught crocheting and knitting for 10 years through the Community Schools program.
Mrs. Roman was a member of St. Agnes Altar Society. She also enjoyed playing bridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen (John) Lee of Mililani, Hawaii; two brothers, Richard Briggs of Iron River and Royal Briggs of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Verna Mae Pedranzan of Iron River, and a grandson, Chris (Susan) Lee of Largo, Fla.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River. Rev. Norm Clisch will officiate.
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River.

Tola Briggs
KINGSFORD — Tola Briggs, 91, of Kingsford, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born July 20, 1910, in Warm Springs, Ark., daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Broome. She was raised in Malden, Mo.
She met and married Arvin “Al” Briggs in Chicago in 1932. They moved to Iron Mountain and built a log cabin on the Camp 5 Road near the family homestead. Her husband preceded her in death.
She enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, gardening, canning, cooking, playing her guitar and piano, and singing. She loved the Lord and taught Sunday school, Bible school, sang in church and helped others; baby sitting for many children up into her 80s and being “Grandma Tola” to them all.
She loved being mom to Dolores, a darling little girl adopted at the age of 3.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Peters of Madison, Wis.; two grandsons, John Buckman of Iron Mountain and Steven Buckman of Milwaukee; three granddaughters, Jordan, Sarah and Kasey of Aurora, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Mary Hill of Kingsford and a brother-in-law, John Briggs of Portland, Ore.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 21 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain and on Monday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. at First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain. Rev. Bruce Linscheid will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

Howard Miller
CRYSTAL FALLS — Howard J. Miller, 72, of 312 Marquette Ave., Crystal Falls, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield, Wis.
Howard was born Sept. 1, 1929, in Grand Rapids, lower Michigan, son of the late John and Hattie (Kroll) Miller.
He married the former Doris Grice on Oct. 9, 1979, in Iron River.
Howard worked in Grand Rapids as a millwright for McInerney Spring and Wire Co. for more than 25 years. While working with McInerney Spring and Wire Co., Howard was a UAW representative.
He moved to Crystal Falls in 1980 and owned and operated Miller’s Bar along with his wife, Doris. They retired in 1998.
Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to camp. He enjoyed visiting with people and truly loved his family, especially his grandchildren. Howard was an active member of the Crystal Falls Business Association for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; four sons, Jerry (Kathy) Miller of Dorr, lower Michigan, Richard (Lisa) Post of Lakeview, lower Michigan, Calvin (Judy) Post of Crystal FAlls and Curtis (Michelle) Post of Channing; two daughters, Lynn (Tom) Walendzik of Grand Rapids and Monica Post Devargas (Javier) of Acupolco, Mexico; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
It was Howard’s wishes to have a private family visitation. A public memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Judy Bennett
KINGSFORD — Judy M. Bennett, 49, of Kingsford, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at University Hospital in Madison, Wis., after a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 17, 1951 in Iron Mountain, the daughter of Walter and Corrine (Cramer) Johnson. Judy graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1971. She was a cashier at Wendy’s Restaurant for a long time, before her illness prevented her from working any longer.
Judy enjoyed country music, dancing, reading and crafts. Her pride and joy was her grandson, Jereme Bennett.
She is survived by her daughter, Jodi Bennett of Kingsford; parents Walter C. and Corrine P. Johnson of Iron Mountain; a grandson, Jereme Bennett of Kingsford; four sisters, Debbie (Ed) Sexton of Gladwin, lower Michigan, Cheryl (Bob) Ray Jr. of Norway; Carol Thompson of Loretto, and Nancy (Mike) McMahon of Iron Mountain; her soul-mate, Jim Bennett of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and many special friends.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Woodrow Lawrentz
FLORENCE, Wis. — Woodrow “Woody” Lawrentz, 86, of Florence, Wis., died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at the Florence Villa Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 31, 1915, in Hartland, Wis., the son of the late Henry and Martha (Stiebritz) Lawrentz.
As a young man Woody was employed in Hartland. He came to the area to work on gliders for the war at the Iron Mountain Ford Plant in 1944, and has been a resident of Florence ever since.
He married Lucille Meyers (Olson) on June 11, 1945 in Florence. Together they owned and operated the Lawrentz Sport Shop in Florence from 1948 to 1983. They would close up the store just after deer season and reopen just before trout season. During this time, the two vacationed in Florida for 10 years and in Mazaltan, Mexico for 30 years. When Woody retired they toured Canada and Alaska. Throughout their travels, they made many lasting friendships.
Woody was an avid conservationist. In the 1940s, he made many trips to Madison for conservation matters. For several years he served as deputy game warden under Bert Nixon and later under John Michalets. He was a fishing guide for about 40 years and had customers from most of the states. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Florence; two sons, Larry (Freda) Olson of Florence and James (Rose) Olson of Spread Eagle, Wis.; four grandchildren, Woody Olson of Minneapolis, Jayne (Paul) D’Alberto of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Rhonda (Alex) Yano of San Diego, Calif; and Michael (Huisuk) Olson of Lockport, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, Alex and Sylvia Olson of Lockport, AJ, Kyle, and Abby D’Alberto of Sheboygan Falls, Andrea and Chelsa Yano of San Diego; a sister-in-law, Carmen (Bert) Youngs of Gladstone; a nephew, Norman Ted (Barb) Mallow of Hartland, Wis.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Evy (Michael) Tyrene and Esther (Ted) Mallow.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Florence. Rev. Doug Johnson will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at the Natural Resource Center in Florence.

Lydia Maki
IRON MOUNTAIN — Lydia H. Maki, 97, of 827 East C St., Iron Mountain, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.
She was born on Aug. 31, 1904, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late Matt and Maria (Laakso) Warlin.
Mrs. Maki was a long time resident of Iron Mountain. She enjoyed gardening and crocheting.
She married Charles Maki in Iron Mountain in 1925. He preceded her in death in 1971.
Mrs. Maki is survived by a son, Allen (Ruth) Maki of Iron Mountain; two daughters, Doris (Melvin) Anderson of Clearwater, Fla., and Verna (Dan) Donovan of Brookfield, Wis.; a sister, Tyyne Hamari of Champion; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Davis; two sisters and six brothers.
Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m. at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Bruce Linscheid will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.

Anna Novak
FLORENCE, Wis. — Anna L. Novak, 73, of Florence, Wis., died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Northland Luther Home in Marinette, Wis.
Anna was born on Sept. 12, 1928, in Florence, daughter of the late Carl and Olga (Hakannson) Kasten.
Anna was a lifelong resident of Florence and graduated from Florence High School. She married Frank J. Novak in 1947. Anna worked for the Florence County Social Services. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Florence and the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 3635 of Florence.
Anna enjoyed sewing and gardening and her many friends and acquaintances in the Florence community.
She is survived by two sisters, Marie Hanson of Sheboygan Falls, Wis. and Grace Goff of Garden City; four sisters-in-law, Melba Novak of Waupun, Wis., Lois Novak of Florence, Bea Kasten of Madison, Wis., and Carolyn Grimm; an uncle, Anselm Kakannson of Horby, Sweden; three brothers-in-law, Raymond Novak of Florence, Edward Taff of Florence, and Bill Miller of Marquette and numerous nieces and nephews.
Anna was preceded by her husband, Frank; four sisters, Charlotte Miller, Doris Taff, Mildred Noyes and Marjorie Meyer; two brothers, Conrad Kasten and Henry Kasten; four brothers-in-law, Cliff Hanson, Charles Goff, Donald Novak and Garfield Noyes; two sister-in-laws, Gertrude Smithson and Alma Rudstrom.
Visitation will be Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Florence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Pastor Andrew Schwartz will officiate. Burial will be in Commonwealth Cemetery.

Edwin Sauve
KINGSFORD — Edwin Richard “Bud” Sauve, 70, of Eloy, Ariz., died Sept. 30, 2001, at his home.
He was born Dec. 9, 1930 in Niagara, Wis., son of the Edward and Blanche (Bourassa) Sauve.
Mr. Sauve served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was discharged in 1952 (1947-1952).
He is survived by five children, Lynn Trottier of Quinnesec, Linda Jones of Kingsford, Rick Sauve of lower Michigan, Mary (Bob) Skoglund of Kingsford and Doug Sauve of Milwaukee; four brothers, Gordon, Harold, John and Arnold Sauve, all of lower Michigan; and one sister, Alice Montgomery, of lower Michigan; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Dean Sauve.
Burial was at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Eric Bousley
WAUSAUKEE, Wis. — Eric “Dick” Richard Bousley, 46, of Dunbar, Wis., died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born April 16, 1955, in Norway, the son of Russell and Doris (Erickson) Bousley.
Visitation will be held at Dunbar Covenant Church on Monday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. Rev. Carl Hammer will officiate. Burial will be in the Dunbar Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Lewis Roth
IRON MOUNTAIN — Lewis H. Roth, 92, of ManorCare Health Center in Kingsford, formerly of 812 Kent St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at ManorCare Health Center.
Lewis was born Aug. 17, 1909, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Louis and Suzanna (Sekerka) Roth. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1929.
He married Velma Steiner on Oct. 1, 1938, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death in August of 1991.
Lewis worked at Ford Motor Co. in Kingsford and as a painter for Bond’s Decorating from 1929 until his retirement in 1975.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Lewis was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Ralph Roth.
He leaves a sister, Ruth Sand of Kingsford; a nephew, David (Lynn) Sand of Iron Mountain; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth (John) Menza of Iron Mountain; two brothers-in-law, Rudy Steiner of Kingsford and Jack Webb of Iron Mountain; special nephew, Emery Steiner of Iron Mountain, and several other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Norman Farley
IRON MOUNTAIN — Norman J. Farley, 71, of Kingsford died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Kingsford, son of the late Norman and Phoebe (Raiche) Farley. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1948.
After graduation, he went to work for Eastern Airlines in New York City. He later went on to work for North West Engineering in Green Bay, Wis. In 1982, Norman moved back to Kingsford and worked at the Pine Mountain Lodge as a desk clerk for many years.
Norman enjoyed the symphonies and operas. He loved visiting with people and participating with the Home Shopping Network.
He leaves three brothers, Norbert (Nancy) Farley of Norway, Patrick (Kristine) Farley of Hubertus, Wis., and Gerald (Chris) Farley of Duluth, Minn.; a sister, Kathryn (Mark) LeClaire of Kingsford; a brother-in-law, Gary LeClaire of Kingsford; two sisters-in-law, Alice Farley of Milwaukee and Marjorie Sharver of Boise, Idaho. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia LeClaire, and two brothers, William Farley and Robert Farley.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Deno Dallaguarda
IRON MOUNTAIN — Deno J. Dallaguarda, 77, of Victorian Pines, Iron Mountain, formerly of Marenisco, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Deno was born Nov. 1, 1923, in the Cary Location in Hurley, Wis., son of the late Anton and Maddalena (Noascon) Dallaguarda. He graduated from Hurley High school.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Deno married Kathryn Coppedge on Aug. 9, 1947.
He was a residential builder for most of his life prior to his retirement. They lived on Lake Gogebic near Marenisco for 29 years and just recently moved to Iron Mountain to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law.
Deno was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and a former member of the Lake Gogebic Volunteer Fire Department.
He was a great father, husband, and friend to many.
Deno was known for his honesty, integrity and sense of humor.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Kathryn; a son, Tony (Judy) Dallaguarda of Iron Mountain; a sister, Dora Waltman of LaCrescenta, Calif., and his lifelong buddy, Arthur Carli of Hurley, Wis.
He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Angelina Dallaguarda; a brother, Frank Dallaguarda, and two sisters, Mary Tess and Rena Dallaguarda.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home of Ironwood.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Fr. Darryl Pepin will officiate.
Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hurley.

Francis Beauchamp
FLORENCE, Wis. — Francis C. Beauchamp, 85, of 640 Negaunee Ave., Florence, Wis. Francis bravely accepted his illnesses and never complained. He died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, while listening to scripture tapes.
He was born Sept. 21, 1916, in Girley, Mich., son of the late Charles and Agnes (Gardner) Beauchamp. He moved to Kingsford as a child and attended Kingsford High School.
Francis served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Veronica McCraw in May of 1942 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence. She preceded him in death on March 2, 1998.
Francis worked many years in Racine, Wis., coming home every weekend to see his family. Later he worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Kingsford, the Tobin Mine in Crystal Falls and the Ray Steber Potato Farm in Florence. He later took a position with Lake Shore Inc., where he worked as a machinist until he retired in 1980.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence.
Francis had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and practiced his devotion daily through the rosary.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing baseball and was a horseshoe throwing champion. Francis was a devoted Green Bay Packer fan who rarely missed a game.
Francis is survived by a son, Emanuel Beauchamp of Morrison, Colo.; three daughters, Carol (John) Denil of Green Bay, Wis., Frances Lee (Patrick) Mullen of Winsted, Conn., and Tamara (Clifford) Lemanski of Aurora, Wis.; a brother, Charles (Wanda) Beauchamp of Detroit; four sisters, Florence LaFave of Green Bay, Alice Fumo of Racine, Wis., Della Gordon of Niagara, Wis., and Gloria Weber of Niagara; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his very special nieces, Simone (Jack) Kriegl of Florence and Mary Jo (Mike) Momont of Kingsford, and their children and many other nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by 16 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence. Prayers will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
