Fred De Money
Former Montana Tech president Fred W. De Money, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at a Butte, Montana hospital.
He was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Oak Park, Ill. He received a BS degree in fire protection engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a masters and Ph.D degree in physical metallurgy from the University of Minnesota. He worked as an engineer for various businesses and in 1972 became president of Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology and proudly held that position until his retirement in 1985.
Fred married Cannon Falls native Ione Edstrom on June 3, 1944, in Cannon Falls. She now survives. Other survivors include daughters and sons in law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two sisters, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Fred De Money in 1957.
Memorial services were held Oct. 2 in Montana.
Irene E. Frangiamore
Irene E. (Van Guilder) Frangiamore, 80, of Enfield, CT, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, surrounded by her loving family at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT.
Mrs. Frangiamore was born in Cannon Falls, on May 10, 1918, to Milton and Minnie Van Guilder. She graduated from Cannon Falls High School. Mrs. Frangiamore served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was a member and past president of VFW Post 1501 Auxiliary in Enfield, CT. She was a long-time employee of Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Engineering Dept. and was instrumental in the development of the first space suit design for NASA. She retired from Pratt and Whitney in 1980.
Mrs. Frangiamore is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Frangiamore, and by daughters, Nancy and husband Ray Tesla, Diane and husband Michael Malley, Karen and husband Paul Kwiecienski, and by a son, Joseph and wife Joyce Frangiamore. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Elaine E. Hughes, sisters Lila Van Guilder and Eva Rosvold, and brothers Ralph, Art, Walter and Wilber Van Guilder.
Funeral services were held October 27 at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapel, Enfield, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Family Church, Enfield. Burial with military honors was at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Enfield.

Loren Canfield
Loren Albert Canfield, 86, Northfield and formerly of Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday morning, October 27, 1998 at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield where he has been a resident for the past three years.
Loren was born on July 22, 1912 in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Oma Canfield. At the age of 7 years, he and his family moved to Artesian, South Dakota. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1944-46, and returned to marry June Blacksten on June 15, 1946 in Mitchell, SD.
Following their marriage they resided in California for three years, until returning to Mitchell in 1949.
They later moved to Mount Vernon, SD, where he owned and operated Canfield's Blacksmith Shop. He truly enjoyed his blacksmith trade. He also enjoyed horses, and while in Mount Vernon he started the Trailrider's Saddle Club.
In 1960 they moved to the Cannon Falls area, settling in Sogn Valley for the next 18 years. He was employed with Syverson Ryder Implement for about one year, until starting his own blacksmith shop. During this time he had also driven school bus and in 1968, he started working as a custodian at the Cannon Falls High School. He retired from the school in 1977 and then went to work at Gemini until he was 79 years old.
Loren was a member of the Nelson Scofield VFW Post 4452 and the American Legion Kraft-Ostrom Post #142. He enjoyed camping and dancing.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, June of the Three Links Apartments in Northfield; son Randy Canfield of Farmington; daughter Pam (Dan) Hon of Northfield; three grandchildren, Chad Johnson, Holly and Joe Morrisey; and three great-grandchildren, Nick, Jesse and Cole Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Loren Jr.; sisters Mary Page and Vera Bedford; and brother, Glen Canfield.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, October 30 at 4 p.m at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls with Pastor Jerry Markel officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m.

Viola Voss
Viola D. Voss, Austin, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Viola was born on November 10, 1916 in Red Wing, to Frank and Esther (Weberg) Larson. She lived most of her life in Austin. She graduated from Austin High School in 1935. She married Carl Voss July 30, 1939. She worked at Land 'O Lakes in Albert Lea until 1962 when she retired. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Jan Voss, LaCrosse, WI; daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Allison Gilbert, West Concord, Sandra and Joe Wollschlager, Cannon Falls; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Delores Dopita, Austin; Ardella and Francis Page, Austin; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and Lloyd Brechtel, Austin; Margaret Eichman, San Antonio, TX; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl in 1985 and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Clasen-Jordan Chapel in Austin with Reverend Harold L. Usgaard officiating. Interment
will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.
Helen Sharp
Helen Johanna Sharp, 70, Seminole, Texas, died Tues., Sept. 1, 1998, at the Methodist Hospital in Lubbock after a brief illness.
She was born on Dec. 8, 1927, in Randolph. She had been a resident of Seminole since 1963 and was affiliated with First United Methodist Church, and worked in the church nursery for 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; two sons, Robert and Herman Sharp; sister, Florence Woodward; brother, Paul Vandenheuvel; parents, Ed and Estella Vandenheuvel. Survivors include a son, Roland Sharp, Seminole; daughter, Phyllis Robertson, Post; brother, Lloyd Vandenheuvel, West Point, KY; two sisters, Irene Erickson, Cannon Falls, and Gladys Lohmann, Zumbrota; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sept. 4, at First United Methodist Church, Seminole, with Rev. Derrel Evins officiating. Interment
was in Gaines County Cemetery. Ratliff Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Torkelson
Margaret Mary (nee Wilharm) Torkelson, 89, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, October 29, 1998 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.
She was born on September 25, 1909 at Sumner, Iowa to Fred and Bertha (Hoth) Wilharm. Margaret was the second of three daughters born to the couple. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sumner. On September 9, 1935, she was married to June Thor (J.T.) Torkelson.
Margaret, along with Tork, managed the Goodhue County Hatchery from 1946 to 1950 when they bought the business from Wescott and Winks, Sumner. They continued their ownership for 29 years, retiring in 1975. Tork died on June 28, 1996. Until her health failed, Margaret was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls where she was involved in the afternoon circle. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Zion Chapter #6.
Margaret took great delight in her extended family, consisting of friends; one sister, Alberta Duhrkopf of Sumner; two nephews, Robert (Pat) Swensen of Des Plaines, IL and Richard (Grace) Swensen of River Falls, WI; three nieces, Sally "Sara" Duhrkopf of Ames, IA, Sharon Seehase of Waverly, IA and Myrtle Schachtner of Fonda, IA; and her grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her two brothers-in-law, Harold (Edna) Torkelson of McAllen, TX and Eddie (Mavis) Torkelson of Sioux Rapids, IA; and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Lew) Neubacher of Berkeley, CA.
Besides Tork, Margaret was preceded in death by her elder sister, Alice Swensen of Waverly; and a grand nephew, Thomas Haefemeyer.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 1 at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Interment
was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to the First English Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.

Orville Amos
Orville N. Amos, 92, Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday morning, November 10, 1998 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where he was residing with his wife Angeline. They are the parents of local Donna (Bill) Tix of Randolph.

Harriet Magnuson
Harriet Hilma Magnuson, 89, Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday afternoon, November 3, 1998 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.
Harriet was born on July 30, 1909 in Leon Township, the daughter of Fred and Esther (Benson) Klingberg. She graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1926, and then took normal teacher's training for one year. She taught for eight years in rural schools in Leon Township until her marriage.
Harriet married Wilbur Magnuson on August 17, 1935 at the home of her uncle, Frank Benson, in Cannon Falls Township. They farmed at the Klingberg farm in Leon Township, until buying their farm in Warsaw Township. They farmed there until retiring in 1978. They continued to live on the farm until moving in to Cannon Falls in 1989.
Harriet was an active member since 1941 in all activities at the Randolph Baptist Church. She had also been a 4-H leader for several years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, her flowers and traveling.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Wilbur; her daughters, Marie (Bob) Peterson of Columbia Heights, Phyllis (Bob) Benz of Cannon Falls and Marjorie (Lowell) Larson of Owatonna; 9 grandchildren, Tom, Wendy, David, Carrie, Kevin, Lori, Steven, Jana and Christopher; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Michael Larson; and sister, Ruby Johnston.
Funeral service was held on Friday, Nov. 6 at the Randolph Baptist Church in Randolph, with Pastor Curt Batschelet officiating. Interment
was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tom and David Peterson, Todd Lundell, Steven Benz, Aaron Hart and Christopher Larson. Honorary pallbearer was Kevin Benz.

Vittoria Golden
Vittoria (Vicky) Golden, the wife of William (Bill) Golden, formerly of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at Bay Front Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, after a short illness.
She was born in Maddaloni, Italy, on Dec. 17, 1925. She was married to Bill Golden in July, 1946, in Maddaloni.
She worked for Armour Packing Co., So. St. Paul, and Kid Duds, Cannon Falls. They moved to St. Petersburg in 1988.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; son William Jr., and daughter, Lorraine, Milwaukee, WI; two grandchildren; a brother and two sisters.
Ladies of VFW Post 6827 were honorary pallbearers at the funeral. Interment
was at Royal Palms Cemetery, St. Petersburg.

Lee Gergen
Lee John Gergen, 80, Randolph, died on Friday morning, November 13, 1998 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.
He was born on October 17, 1918 in Hastings, the son of Peter and Marie (Moes) Gergen.
Lee married Florence Eiler on February 10, 1942 in Hampton. He farmed most all of his life in Hampton Township. He had served on the Hampton Township board for 30 years.
He was a member of St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, and was a member of the Father Paul Judge Knights of Columbus Council #4481. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and had been a member of the Oxford Sportsman's Club.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Florence; his sons, Gary (Marlene) of South Carolina, John (Pat) of Dennison, Stan (Brenda) of Cannon Falls, Clinton (Debbie) and Clifford (Sue), all of Farmington; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Nicholas (Marilyn) Gergen of Minneapolis, Paul (Lucille) Gergen of Rosemount, Alyce (Harold "Bud) Kieffer and Eleanor (Bert) Charlton, all of Hastings; brother-in-law, Robert McCoy of Cannon Falls; and sister-in-law, Eleanor McCoy of Cannon Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alois Gergen; and sisters, Rosella McCoy and Helen McCoy.
Mass of Christian Burial was on Monday, November 16 at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, with Father David Shannon officiating. Interment
was at the church cemetery.

Orville Amos
Orville Neil Amos, 92, Cannon Falls and formerly of Inver Grove Heights, died on Tuesday morning, November 10, 1998 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where he was residing with his wife, Angeline.
Orville was born on May 18, 1906 in Plainview, the son of Howard and Ida (Ketchum) Amos. He attended Dover Senior High School in Dover, MN, and later attended the Columbia Institute of Communications in Chicago for 2 years. Orville married Angeline M. Tinucci on October 9, 1940 in St. Paul. He served with the 2500th Army Air Forces Base Unit during World War II. As a senior mechanic with the unit, he was instrumental in the modifications of the B-25 Mitchells used in General Doolittle's raid on Tokyo. Soon after his honorable discharge, they moved to Inver Grove Heights, where they lived for over 30 years, and also wintered in Tampa, FL.
Orville was a successful businessman, including well drilling throughout east central Minnesota for 20 years, lumber sawing and general contracting in Inver Grove Heights. He was responsible for building and operating one of the community's well-known "pastime" recreational establishments, Country View Roller Rink. This was the largest roller rink in the Midwest at the time. For 30 years, he served as Lt. Colonel in the South St. Paul wing of the US Air Force Civil Air Patrol. Orville was a member of the American Legion Post #98 in St. Paul Park, and of the Masonic Mizpah Lodge No. 191 in South St. Paul.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Angeline and their children, Donna Tix of Randolph, Neil Amos of Delano, Betty Amos of San Diego, CA, and Patricia Silva of Thousand Oaks, CA. He is also survived by two daughters, Vera Sherman of Billings, MT, and Roxanne Butler of Denver, CO; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral service was held on Friday, November 13 at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Linda Grounds and Sister Patricia Fritz officiating. Interment
will be at a later date at Little Valley Cemetery near Plainview. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren, Kim Weber, Michael Tix, Carolyn Amos and Matthew Amos.

Marynia Peterson
Marynia F. Peterson, 78, died on Oct. 22, 1998, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. She had been a resident of North Ridge Care Center, New Hope, for the past six months, and formerly lived in Brooklyn Center and the Cannon Falls area.
She was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Red Wing, the daughter of Martha (Jabram) and Fred Budenski. She married Harold Peterson on May 29, 1941. They lived in St. Paul for several years where she worked in the dietary kitchen of a hospital. In 1944 they moved to the Vasa area and later Belle Creek, where they farmed. Marynia was an active member in Farmers Union and was recognized for her world community leadership. She was also active in the Spring Garden 4-H club, assisting members on their projects and other activities.
In 1965 they sold the farm and moved to Brooklyn Center where they lived for 33 years. Marynia was a housewife who enjoyed her work as a homemaker and was also kept busy in the kitchen baking and cooking for the family. She had many hobby interests, including crocheting, hook latch work, sewing and other crafts. Marynia also did volunteer work after church working in the kitchen. They retired in 1976. Marynia and Harold spent 19 years going south for the winters. During the summer months they enjoyed fishing Lake Minnetonka, travel trips in the U.S and abroad and cruise ship vacations,

Willard Miller
Willard "Bill" Robert Miller, 70, Goodhue, died Sunday, November 22, 1998 at University Good Samaritan Center, Minneapolis.
He ws born July 15, 1928 in Goodhue County, the son of Reinhart and Helen (Betcher) Miller.
He grew up in the Lake City area where he attended rural schools and St. John's Parochial School. He served in the U.S. Army from January 18, 1951 to october 17, 1952 in Korea receiving the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, UN Service Medal and Over Seas Bar.
He married Carol Dodes on October 1, 1954 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Red Wing. They lived in Red Wing for several years and then farmed in Belvidere Township for the past 40 years. He also worked at S.B. Foot Tanning Company for 15 years and Fleischmann Malting Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1989. He then worked for three years for BD Industries. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Belvidere, and Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post 54. he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Carol, Goodhue; three daughters, Wanda (Richard E.) Johnson, Red Wing, Sandy Miller, Red Wing, and Anita Miller, Yorba Linda CA; three sons, Michael Miller, Hastings, Mark (Jennifer) Miller, Beldenville, WI, and Richard Miller, Goodhue; five grand- children; three brothers, Arvid (Betty) Miller, Red Wing, Haven (Mary Ellen) Miller, Lake City and Leland (Marge) Miller, Hager City; six sisters, Mary Ann (Alfred) Hinck, twin sister Winnifred (John) Yorde, Melva (Fritz) Wiebusch, Delaine (Donald) Klein, all of Lake City, Diane (Richard) Costello, Cannon Falls, and Nancy Johnson, Prior Lake.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin, and an infant, and one sister, Judy Sommerfield.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 25 at Ft. Snelling Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Nack officiating. Burial was in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Leona Ulrich
Leona Marie Ulrich, 80, Belle Creek Township, rural Goodhue, died on Friday morning, November 20, 1998 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.
Leona was born on June 24, 1918 in Nicollet County, MN, the daughter of Otto and Mary (Maidl) Clobes.
She married Werner W. Ulrich on April 17, 1934 in Lafayette Township. They started farming near Hector in 1935, and later moved to Belle Creek Township in 1962. Leona was employed for a number of years at Kid Duds in Cannon Falls, starting in 1962.
Werner died on February 24, 1995.
Leona was a member of the Spring Garden Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her children, Marie Ulrich of Minneapolis, Werner Jr. "Bill" Ulrich of Goodhue, Ramona (John) Swenson of Red Oak, IA, Douglas (Carla) Ulrich and Wendy (Terry) Norton, all of Rochester; daughter-in-law Marlene Ulrich of Maplewood; 11 grandchildren, Thomas Ulrich, Todd (Carissa) Ulrich, Tad (Stacia) Ulrich, Kristine (Trent Watts) Swenson, Kate and Elizabeth Swenson, Heather and Heidi Ulrich, Darla, Travis and Laurie Norton; three great-granddaughters, Vanessa, Mercedes and Emerson Ulrich; brothers Otto Clobes Jr. of Fairfax and Florian Clobes of South Carolina; sister Dorothy Ulrich of Winona; brother-in-law Albert Weier; sisters-in-law Alice Clobes, Sally Clobes, Shirley Bjerke and Gertrude Clobes; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Werner; sons Dennis and Dwight Ulrich; sister Veronica Weier and brothers Victor, Leander, Walter, Arnold and Floyd Clobes.
Funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 23 at Spring Garden Lutheran Church with Pastors Nick and Cindy Fisher-Broin. Interment
was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Inez Oyer
Inez Mary Oyer, 74, Cannon Falls and formerly of Hastings, died on Wednesday morning, Nov. 18, 1998 at the Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Inez was born on August 17, 1924 in Edgar County, near Paris, Illinois. Her parents, James Walter Davis and Effie Edna (Dugan) Davis had a small farm and orchard where Inez spent her earliest years.
She graduated from Paris High School in 1942 and later attended college at Indiana State where she studied home economics. She was a school teacher in Illinois and Minnesota.
In 1947 she met her future husband, Virgil (Mike) Oyer. They married on July 27, 1947 at her parent's farm near Paris. Inez and Mike lived in Georgetown, IL until moving to Hastings in 1957. While Mike worked at Koch Refinery, Inez raised her boys. She had also been employed at Smead Manufacturing Company and at school as a substitute teacher and the Hastings school lunch program.
Inez had a great love of reading and was an accomplished seamstress. She had worked at Kid Duds in Cannon Falls for a time.
In 1985, after Mike's retirement, they moved to El Cajon, CA. They returned to Cannon Falls in 1994.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Virgil "Mike," their sons Michael (Pam) of Cannon Falls, James of West St. Paul and Kenneth of San Diego, CA; and three grandchildren, Joseph, Taylor and Megan. She was preceded in death by her parents and twin half-sisters.
A memorial service was held on Friday at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls with Pastor Linda Grounds officiating.

Johanna Thielbar
Johanna Bakkethun Thielbar, 95, Faribault, died Wednesday, November 18, 1998 at the District One Hospital in Faribault.
Johanna Hallanger, the daughter of Nels and Anna (Thornblan) Hallanger, was born on June 3, 1903 in Goodhue County. She was united in marriage to Iver Bakkethun on December 18, 1920 in Red Wing. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1957. For many years the Bakkethuns farmed in Leon Township. In 1951 they moved to Faribault. Mrs. Bakkethun worked as a cook for District One Hospital and also worked for Norbest Turkey Plant, both of Faribault. She was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1562 Auxiliary, the American Legion Post 43 Auxiliary, and the Faribault Aerie 1460, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. In 1991 she was united in marriage to Ronald Thielbar. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1997.
She is survived by her son Herbert (Carol) Bakkethun of Aurora, MN; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and by other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Neil Bakkethun in 1952, two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 21 from the Parker Kohl Funeral Home of Faribault, with the Rev. Scott McLaughlin, pastor of the Urland Lutheran Church, Leon Township, Goodhue County, officiating. Interment
was at the Urland Lutheran Church Cemetery in Goodhue County.
