Laura Nelson
Laura E. Nelson, 90, Red Wing, died Thursday, May 13, 1999 at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
She was born April 20, 1909 in Barton, ND, the daughter of Edwin and Ora (Payne) Rhine. She graduated from Rugby High School in Rugby, ND, and attended teachers training in Minot, ND, and Winona. She taught for 26 years at schools in Goodhue, Zumbrota and Lake City districts, including rural districts.
She married Everal Nelson on December 1, 1962 in Red Wing. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Evening Circle; she was a member and served as past president of Business and Professional Women; she was a member of the Retired Teachers Association; enjoyed reading, sewing, and the love of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Everal; one daughter, Bette (Claire) Erickson of Cannon Falls; one step-son, Terry (Iris) Nelson of Red Wing; two stepdaughters, Doris Ann (Burton) Diercks and Barb (Jim) Rietmann, both of Red Wing; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Glenna Ohlin of Hope, ND, Jessie Rudolph of Minot, ND and Patricia Pederson of WA; three brothers, James (Mary) Rhine of Tacoma, WA, Jerry Nauman of Surrey, ND and Dennis Nauman of Barton, ND. Her parents, one daughter, Beverly Bell; one grandson, Scott Bell and four brothers Gene, Pat, Mike and Ronald Rhine all preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 17 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Wordelman officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing.
Memorials preferred to the church or Red Wing ELC.
Pallbearers were Scotty Andrews, Doug and Tom DeWeese, Bob Holm, Annard Kohn and George Lesmann.
Melvin Priem
Melvin Priem, 69, Duquette, formerly of the Cromwell area, died peacefully on Friday, May 14, 1999 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born on May 2, 1930 in Glenwood City where he grew up and attended school. Mel was a U.S. Navy veteran. After the service, he lived in Bennett, WI. On February 17, 1951, Mel married Violet Torgerson in Carlton. They lived in Duluth for two years before moving to St. Paul and later to the Red Wing and Cannon Falls areas. Mel worked for 22 years as a millwright for Armour & Company in So. St. Paul. After farming in Red Wing, Mel and Vi purchased a tavern in Bellechester that they operated as Mel and Vi's Tavern from 1975 to 1979. In 1980, they moved to the Cromwell area where they farmed and operated Eagle Lake Resort. Mel and Vi moved to Duquette in 1997. He enjoyed fishing, cribbage, and hunting.
Mel was preceded in death by his three sons, Randy, Ricky and David; parents, Julius and Ruth (Burton) Priem; a brother, Reynold; and a sister, Vivian.
Survivors include his wife, Violet; three sons, Alan (Sheila) of Bellechester, Edwin (Linda) of Clermont, FL, and Marty (Denise) of Mahtowa; a daughter, Renay (Rock) Dodge of Shell Lake, WI; three brothers, Edwin Sr. (Leona) of Wright; Orville of Hawthorne, and Bruce (Jeanetta) of Barnum; four sisters, Erma (Gerhard) Gerth of St. Paul; Paula Priem of Omaha, NE, Delma Priem of Minneapolis, and Kathy (Steve) Holtz of Solon Springs; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 19 in Oak Lake Lutheran Church, Kerrick Twp. Burial was in Oak Lake Community Cemetery, Kerrick Twp. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.
Alma Swanson
Alma Elizabeth Swanson, 99, Cannon Falls, died on Saturday evening, May 15, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Alma was born on November 19, 1899 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Albert S. and Marie W. (Lundgren) Johnson. She moved to Cannon Falls when she was five years old. Alma graduated from Cannon Falls High School, and later took Normal training to become a teacher. She then taught rural school.
On August 18, 1921, Alma married Reuben Swanson. The couple farmed in the Spring Garden area, prior to moving to Wanamingo, where they operated a grocery store. In 1948 they moved to Cannon Falls.
Alma worked for many years as a cook in the Cannon Falls Schools.
She was an active member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, and loved fishing. Alma will be remembered for her keen sense of humor and hearty laugh.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Reuben in 1965; two brothers, Frank and Oscar Johnson; and four sisters, Olga Lorenson, Mabel Bakke, Viola Dalton, and Evelyn Vukas.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Dana Peterson officiating. Interment
was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred.
Pallbearers were Dale Lorenson, Dick Dalton, John Bakke, Earl Johnson, Roger Olson and Walter Mathison. Honorary pallbearers were her godchildren.

Robert Herkenratt
Robert J. Herkenratt, 71, Rosemount, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, from complications of emphysema.
He was born July 18, 1927 in Chetek, WI, the son of Ila and Milton Herkenratt. He married Carol Beckman at Wangen Prairie Lutheran Church, Dennison, on August 2, 1952. He was a Korean War veteran, and was retired from the Military Police of the Army. He also retired after 23 years in security with Honeywell. He was a member of the Masons, Last Man's Club and VFW of Northfield.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; son John (Kathleen), Eden Prairie; daughter Karen (Kevin) Hulscher, Farmington; brothers Richard (Dorothy), Faribault, and Harry (Geri), Detroit Lakes; brothers-in-law Donavan (Linda) Beckman, Northfield, John (Shirley) Beckman, Cannon Falls, Larry (Marleen) Beckman, Dennison; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jr., and sister, Maragaret Wood.
Funeral services were held May 10, at Farmington Lutheran Church. Interment
was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Al Roiger
Albert Joseph "Al" Roiger, 82, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, May 20, 1999 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Al was born on July 1, 1916 in Springfield, the son of John B. and Elizabeth (Schneider) Roiger. He worked in a grocery store after school and on weekends for nine years. He served with the United States Army during World War II in England, France and Germany from January 6, 1942 until his honorable discharge on October 30, 1945.
He moved to Cannon Falls, and married Jeanette Kuhn on June 22, 1946. They owned and operated the "Super Market," located at the now Hi-Quality Bakery, with Irvin and Ann Freeberg from 1947-1961. After 13 years in partnership, Al and Jeanette sold it to the Freeberg's. Al managed the National Food store, which was located where the library is now, for 10 years. When SuperValu bought National, Al managed SuperValu for two years. He then worked at Lorentz Meats and the mall grocery store. After retiring, he worked part-time at SuperValu.
Al was a longtime active member of St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls. He was a member of Father Paul Judge Knights of Columbus Council #4481, having served as Grand Knight. He was a member for over 50 years of both the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452 and the Kraft-Ostrom American Legion Post #142. He served on the Cannon Falls City Council for three years (1951-53), and served as mayor at two different time periods (1954 and 1968-69). He loved bowling, fishing, golfing and gardening. He enjoyed playing the accordion, especially at the nursing home.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Jeanette; his children, Richard Roiger of Mankato, Theresa (John Menegon) Roiger of Marbletown, NY and Ronald (Susan) Roiger of Minneapolis; 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Jon, Ben, Charlotte and Simon Roiger; 2 step-grandchildren, Miles and Devon Menegon; brothers, George (Frieda) Roiger and Joseph (Marianna) Roiger, all of Springfield; sisters, Marie Wertisch of Springfield, Elizabeth Sorenson of Wabasso and Frances Scherer of Wayzata; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Theresa; sister, Anne Steffel; and brother, Adolph Roiger.
Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, May 24 at St. Pius V Catholic Church, with Fr. Roger Hessian officiating. Military honors followed the Mass at church. Interment
will take place at a later date at the church cemetery.

Merle Tate
Merle Douglas Tate, 86, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, May 20, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Merle was born on June 18, 1912 in Stanton Township, the son of John W. and Ruth Tate. He attended St. Olaf College and enjoyed playing the violin in his younger years.
He married Helen C. Otte on June 19, 1937 at the Randolph Methodist Church. He and his wife Helen both graduated from Randolph High School.
After their marriage, Merle and Helen settled on his grandfather's farm southwest of Cannon Falls, where they lived for 60 years and where grandson Rob now resides. Merle was a long-time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls. He had an inventive spirit and was always striving to protect the natural environment and conserve limited resources. His concern for the environment drove him to have strong interests in such things as wind energy. Merle was active in many farm organizations, especially the NFO. In his later years, he had a great interest in the restoration of antique machinery and automobiles.
Merle was preceded in death by brother, Chester; his parents, his son, Gary, and his wife, Helen.
He is survived by his children, Betty (Marlin) Kiecker of Plymouth and Harley (Deb) Tate of Kenyon; daughter-in-law, Nancy Tate-Cornair of Farmington; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, Kevin and Anne Marie Caron and Ashley Vetscher, and 7 step-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pauline Otte of Cannon Falls; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, May 22 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls, with Rev. Dr. Gary Titusdahl officiating. Interment
was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the church elevator fund.

Peter Endres
Peter H. Endres, 100, Cannon Falls, died at the Cannon Falls Hospital on Friday, May 21, 1999.
He was born in Hampton on Feb. 4, 1899, on the family farm in Hampton Township, the son of Henry and Odelia Endres. He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Parish in New Trier and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He liked to sing in the Hampton church choir and enjoyed acting in plays as a youth. He married Marie Rother on June 17, 1926. After living on the farm for 57 years, they sold it and moved into Cannon Falls in 1990. He and his family celebrated his 100th birthday on Feb. 7 at St. Mary's in New Trier.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, Cannon Falls; sons, Arnold (Cleo), Babbitt and David (Darlene), Eagan; daughters Mary (Clifford) Frandrup, Randolph, and Helene (Terrance) Tri, Hastings; 20 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers, and a grandson, Danny Endres.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Trier. Officiants were Rev. Fr. Marvin Klaers, Michael O'Connor and Valerius Messerich. Mary Ann Bell
Mary Ann (Trelstad) Bell, 59, St. Paul, died Friday, May 21, 1999 at home of cancer.
She was born Feb. 7, 1940, to Art and Myrtle (Magnuson) Trelstad. She grew up in the Spring Garden area.
She is surivived by her husband, Ron; son LeRoy (Donna) Prine, Omaha, NE; stepchildren Duane Bell, California, and Cheryl (Rick) Ellingson, Hugo; 12 grandchildren and step grandchildren; brothers Arlen (Carol), Montrose, IA, and Mel (Nancy), Red Wing, and many loving friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 27, at 11 a.m., at Hope Lutheran Church, 1340 North Hazel, St. Paul. Pastor Conrad Warren will officiate. Memorials are preferred to hospice.
Oren Heath
Oren Elmer Heath, 76, Rochester, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island.
He was born December 28, 1922 in Medford to Elmer and Sarah (McMartin) Heath. On June 5, 1945 Oren was united in marriage to Bernadeen Colleen Condon in Owatonna. He was a life-long resident of Rochester. Oren retired from Mayo Clinic-Rochester, where he was employed as a stock clerk for 33 years. Oren was a resident at Karrington Cottages in Rochester before moving to Pine Haven Care Center one year ago. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Harne and Evelyn Bailey.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Bernadeen Colleen (Condon) Heath of Rochester; seven children, Shirley Larson of Chatfield, Larry Heath of Rochester, Judy (Arnold) Abrahamson of Dodge Center, Beverley (Wayne) Harrington of Cannon Falls, Debbey (Ronald) Delaney of Red Wing, Bradley (Linda) Heath of Rochester, and Darcey Heath of Rochester. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Dean (Jenny) Fadness, Corey Fadness, Daniel Zeller, Anthony Delaney, Gregory Heath, Jessica Delaney, Nicholas Delaney, Kyle Heath, Kayla Heath and Kevyn Heath; one great-granddaughter Vanessa Delaney; two sisters, Pearl (Irving) Lueck of Owatonna and Alice (Edward) Jirele of Owatonna.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 1 at the Hanson Funeral Home in Kenyon. Rev. Guy Redfield officiated. Interment
was at Old Concord Cemetery in West Concord.
Oren and Bernadeen were so thankful for the assistance of the Rochester Area Red Cross during the flood of 1978, that in lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Rochester Area Red Cross.
Marie Goudy
Marie Elizabeth Goudy, 90, Cannon Falls, died on Saturday evening, May 29, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls where she has been residing this past year.
Marie was born on October 3, 1908 in Stanton Township, the daughter of Nathaniel and Emma (Robinson) Goudy. She graduated in 1927 from Cannon Falls High School and then went on to nurses training at St. John's Hospital, retiring as nursing supervisor. She moved back to Cannon Falls in 1991.
Marie was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in St. Paul. Marie enjoyed traveling, fishing, knitting and other crafts, and was an avid basketball fan.
She is survived by her sister, Myrtle Goudy of Cannon Falls; brother James Goudy of Cannon Falls; sister-in-law Dorothy Goudy of Austin; nephew James Goudy of Austin; niece Elizabeth (Richard) Alwes of Blooming Prairie; great nieces Thea Marie (Brandon) Day of Oronoco and Megan Alwes of Blooming Prairie; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Nathaniel and Francis Goudy.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 2 at 2 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Titusdahl officiating. Interment
was at the Stanton Cemetery.

Cora Husbyn
Cora G. Husbyn, 98, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, May 27, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Cora was born on September 5, 1900 in Goodhue County, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Soine) Brekke. She schooled in the Dennison area and later married Herman M. Husbyn on October 3, 1928 in Zumbrota. They resided in Dennison, Faribault and Nerstrand, prior to moving to Cannon Falls in the early 1950s. During this time she was a homemaker. She later worked for several years at Windy Acres, Home Cafe and the Cannonball, retiring at the age of 72 years. She and Herman enjoyed square dancing. Herman died on July 15, 1986.
Cora was an active member of the Wangen Prairie Lutheran Church where she was involved in the ladies aid, Bible study and sewing circle. She enjoyed cross-stitching.
She is survived by her children Doris Husbyn of Minneapolis and Dale Husbyn of Osakis; four grandchildren, Linda, Dean, David and Mark; four great-grandchildren, Shane, Jamie, Brittney and Paige; sisters-in-law Caroline Brekke of Frazee, Stella Loven, Nora Husbyn, Gladys Husbyn and Doris Husbyn, all of Cannon Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Herman; infant daughter Marie; three brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29 at 2 p.m. at the Wangen Prairie Lutheran Church with Pastor Scott McLaughlin officiating. Interment

Lillian Stromme
Adeline "Lillian" Stromme, 89, Cannon Falls and formerly of Kenyon, died on Tuesday afternoon, June 1, 1999 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where she has been residing this past year.
She was born on March 8, 1910 in Kenyon, the daughter of Christoffer and Bergitte "Belle" (Haugen) Flaten. She attended country school near her home in Wanamingo Township.
Lillian married Omer G. Stromme on June 29, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA, and they farmed in Wanamingo Township for 30 years. In 1970, they moved in to Kenyon. Omer died on April 13, 1972. Lillian remained in Kenyon for 28 years, until moving to Cannon Falls in June 1998.
She was a lifelong active member of the Holden Lutheran Church, where she was baptized on May 8, 1910 and confirmed on March 10, 1925.
She loved the outdoors, flowers and yard work. She also enjoyed reading and playing her organ.
She is the loving mother of Ronald (Janet) Stromme of Cannon Falls and Orlyn Stromme of Las Vegas, NV; beloved grandmother of Steven (Jennifer) Stromme of Rochester, Mitchell Stromme of Morgan Hill, CA and Lisa (Hector) Cuevas of Faribault; six great-grandchildren, Ashly, Joshua, Timmy, Demi, Courtney and Noah; two brothers, Howard (Lorna) Flaten of Kenyon and Maurice (Betty) Flaten of Red Oak, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Omer; two grandchildren, an infant boy and Travis Stromme; five brothers, Obert, Clifford, Norman, Carl and Sanford Flaten; and sister, Edna Broin.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, June 5 at 1 p.m. at the Holden Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Lockerby officiating. Interment
was at the church cemetery.

Marion Gillispie
Marion August Gillispie, 85, Farmington, and formerly of Inver Grove Heights and Stanton, died on Tuesday morning, June 1, 1999 at his home.
Marion was born on November 5, 1913 in Northfield Township, the son of Henry and Mathilda (Bickel) Gillispie. He attended country school in Dennison. Until he was 16 years of age, Marion and his brother, Homer played with the Dennison Boys and Girls Band.
Marion married Viola V. Drentlaw on February 14, 1935 in Northfield at the Methodist parsonage. They farmed for 33 years near Stanton. Marion worked for 20 years for the Chicago Great Western Railroad, retiring in March 1977.
In 1966, they moved to South St. Paul, and in 1969 bought their home in Inver Grove Heights. Viola died on January 14, 1997.
Marion had been an active member of the Randolph United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his children, Shirley (Herbert) Petersen, Eugene (Sig) and Russell (Bonnie), all of Northfield, Harold (Karen) of Farmington, Curtis (Cheryl) of Fort Gibson, OK and Kevin (Bonnie) of Cannon Falls; 27 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola; great-grandson, Matthew Ashton; and brother, Homer in May 1997.
Funeral service was held on Friday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Northfield, with Pastor Phil Strom officiating. Interment
was at the Stanton Cemetery.

Olive Johnson
Olive Elvira Johnson, 93, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday evening, June 10, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Olive was born on April 24, 1906 in Worthington, the daughter of Sven Johann and Freda (Wallgren) Anderson. She attended school in Worthington and later moved to Cannon Falls in March 1915. She schooled in Cannon Falls, completing the 12th grade in 1923. She later met her first husband, Ronald Anderson in the Goodhue County area. They were married on September 14, 1935 and had one child, John Anderson. Ronald was killed on the farm on March 29, 1939 when John was a small child.
Olive later married Bertil Johnson on February 6, 1943 and had a son, Byrl Johnson. Olive and Bertil were members of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. She was always very active in her church, where she was a member of the Lutheran Church Women, a Sunday school teacher, involved with Bible study and sewing circle. Olive was the Cloverdale 4-H leader for over 30 years and was a Cannon Falls Hospital Auxiliary member. Olive was involved with the project unit, and in 1940, was the Cannon Falls Township Chairwoman for the extension. She was influential in organizing six new groups in townships. Olive enjoyed crocheting afghans and was an avid quilter. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Bertil died on April 1, 1977.
Olive is survived by her sons, John (Gwen) Anderson of Phil Campbell, AL, and Byrl Johnson of Cannon Falls; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and six sisters and brothers, Minnie Widholm, Helen Munson, Alice Anderson, Ruth "Hildegarde" Larson, Walter Anderson and J. Everett Anderson.
Funeral service was held on Tuesday at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Daphne Hamborg officiating. Interment
was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Harlan Widholm, Maurice Anderson, Kermit and Kevin Lindahl, Dennis Wright and Brad Munson.

He was born in Randolph on Sept. 2, 1929, the son of the late Adrian and Estella Vandenheuvel. He married Rosa Durbin, West Point, KY, in 1990.
He retired from the US Army after 23 years of service. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received many honors, including the Purple Heart.
He is survived by two sisters, Gladys (David) Lohman, Zumbrota, and Irene (Wayne) Erickson, Cannon Falls; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
Funeral services were held June 8 at the chapel in Irvington, KY. Interment
was at the Irvington Cemetery.
