Molly Arnold Braun
Molly Arnold Braun loved to fly, more than anything on Earth, and now her spirit soars.
Ms. Braun ‹ who died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Gainesville ‹ loved many other things besides aviation, however. She had the ability to appreciate everything beautiful in this life, whether it was a flower, a poem or a child who crossed her path. Even more importantly, she was able to share that love in everything she created.
Ms. Braun, 84, was born in Arcadia, the only child of Minnie Viola and Andrew E. Arnold. She graduated from high school in Ocala and went to work as an administrative secretary at the University of Florida under Dean Riley. Ms. Braun was a pilot at Stengel Field in Gainesville (upon which Butler Brothers' Plaza was built). Not only did she fly in air shows, but she wrote and published the Stengel Field newsletter under the pen name of Kathryn Parnell.
Ms. Braun moved to Texas in the early '40s, where she taught meteorology to U.S. Army Air Corps and RAF pilots in ground school. Although she enjoyed Texas and teaching, she moved home to Florida after World War II. She eventually became secretary to Dr. C.B. Pollard, graduate research professor of organic chemistry at the University of Florida. That was where she met her husband, John Charles Braun, as he finished his doctoral studies. When Braun moved his bride to Lake City, she immersed herself in the community. She was a long-term member of Epiphany Catholic Church, at which she served on the Parish Financial Committee; she was also a member of St. Ann's Guild. Ms. Braun was a member of the Lake City Woman's Club for several decades, shaped many lives as a Girl Scout leader and took an active interest in local education by focusing on school board issues. Recognizing her beliefs in diversity, the 1977 mayor, Jim Ward, named Ms. Braun to the Lake City Human Relations Council, on which she served for many years.
In her spare time, Ms. Braun created artwork in several media, but she specialized in fiber arts. She painted, stenciled and hand-dyed fabric. She also designed clothing, which she embellished with beads, metallic threads, paints and other items, long before these ideas became popular. Ms. Braun and her husband were avid horticulturists. They hybridized camellias as part of the Gainesville Camellia Society for several decades. Additionally, they were active in the American Camellia Society, for which they judged numerous shows. In recent yeas, Ms. Braun had become interested in daylilies, and was active with the Suwannee Valley Hemerocallis Society. In fact, she and her husband traveled to the American Hemerocallis Society convention in Philadelphia last July. In addition to being a member of Epiphany, Ms. Braun also supported and attended Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gainesville.
She is missed very much by her husband, John Braun, and son David Braun, both of Lake City; her daughters, Vicki Braun of Orlando and Cathe Bedard of Michigan; and granddaughter, Brooke Bedard of Michigan.
Arrangements are under the direction of CAESAR'S FUNERAL HOME in Lake City. A memorial mass will be held at Epiphany Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10.

John Charles Braun
Dr. John Charles Braun was a man in love. He was so devoted to his wife that he followed her to the happiness of another world. Braun, 83, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Lake City, just three days after the death of his wife. Although we mourn his loss, we know he will find rewards that this life could never offer.
Braun was born in South Dakota to Theodore Wright Braun and Johann Baptist Braun. He graduated in 1934 from Pillager High School, a "one-room schoolhouse" in central Minnesota. After Braun served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, he joined his family in LaCrosse. A driver who trucked food across the country, he enjoyed traveling to new horizons.
Before long, he found himself in the Pacific Theater during World War II aboard a B-29 bomber in the U.S. Army Air Corps. As a member of the 315th Bomb Wing, Braun was awarded the Air Medal, with oak leaf clusters, for the longest bomb mission of the war.
Braun returned to attend the University of Florida, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Eta Sigma. After he earned a bachelor's degree in science, he was awarded a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1955. He also married Molly Arnold, a secretary in the organic chemistry department.
Braun moved his bride to Lake City, where they lived for 46 years. He worked as a research chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Olustee. Braun was a member of the American Society of Chemists and Chemical Engineers. Braun contributed to the scientific community by translating research abstracts into English (from German, French, Spanish and Portuguese). He was also listed in American Men of Science.
Braun retired from civil service in 1973 to pursue his many interests, which ranged from chemical and electronics projects to writing newspaper commentaries. He taught chemistry at Lake City Community College and joined his wife as an avid horticulturist. They hybridized camellias as part of the Gainesville Camellia Society for several decades. Additionally, they were active in the American Camellia Society, for which they judged numerous shows. In recent years, Braun had become interested in daylilies and was active with the Suwannee Valley Hemerocallis Society.
Braun was a loyal parishioner of Epiphany Catholic Church, member of the Holy Name Society and was a charter member of the Fr. Patrick J. Malone Council of the Knights of Columbus, which he served as treasurer. He was also served the community by donating blood to Civitan Regional Blood Bank; he was a "galloneer" many times over.
Braun, who had a wry sense of humor and never missed an opportunity for a pun, leaves behind two sisters, Barbara Leith of Oregon and Teddy Topp of Washington State; as well as a brother, Alton J.
