Valentine Martin Sharpe
Valentine Martin Sharpe, 87, of 992 M.L. King Jr. St., Lake City died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Paradise Pine Health Center, Jacksonville, terminating an extended illness.
Born in Columbia County in 1914, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Mae Parker Martin.
She received her education in the public schools of Columbia County and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. On Aug. 3, 1929, she was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Lemuel Chester Sharpe, who preceded her in death in 1985.
Survivors include her children, Mae Christine King (David), Milwaukee, Ralph Sharpe, Lake City, and Pearlie Mae Tunsil (James), Jacksonville; four sisters-in-law; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Valentine Martin Sharpe will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5 at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.D. Johnson, pastor, delivering the eulogy. Interment will following in St. James Cemetery.
Arrangements by COMBS FUNERAL HOME, 400 E. Washington Street, Lake City. Nola Mae Vining Nola Mae Vining, 87, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001, after an extended illness. Mrs. Vining was a resident of Lake City, moving here in 1995 from Miami where she lived most of her life. She was a member of Athens Baptist Church and loved gardening, walking and children. Mrs. Vining was preceded in death by her great grandson, Brandon Vining, in 1996. Survivors include her sons, Thomas N. (Nancy) Vining, Lake City, James R. (Shirley) Vining, White Springs, her sister-in-law, Buretta Skeen, Sebring, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4 in the Sherrill Guerry Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mike Devine officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Thomas W. Fishwick Jr.
Mr. Thomas Warrick Fishwick Jr., 64, of Route 15, Box 4000, Lake City passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 16, 1937, to Mr. Thomas Fishwick Sr. and Mrs. Mary Scrowcroft in Pawtucket, R.I. He served in the Navy for years and was a construction worker. He was married to Mrs. Anne Tootell Fishwick and surviving are four children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral rites will be held at the Bushnell Memorial at a later date.

Ella Jean Knight Thurman
Ella Jean Knight Thurman left this world Saturday, April 21, 2001, after a long illness.
She is the daughter of Pearl Nettles and William Statley Knight and was born March 31, 1936, in Union County.
A devoted wife and mother, she was preceded in death by two sons, Chuckie Pierson, Lulu, and David Marshall, Lewiston, Maine. For the last 25 years, she had resided in Lewiston.
She left behind her husband, Jack Thurman; two daughters, Cynthia Jean Pierson, Melissa Thurman Gauthier (Ronald), Maine; one son, Douglas Thurman (Debbie), Boston; her eldest granddaughter, Jackie Johns, Lake City; seven grandchildren in Maine, Kendra, David Thomas, Chelsea and Haley Marshal, Ashley, Ryan and Becca Gauthier; and Kenneth and Jennifer Thurman, Boston; one great-grandson, Austin Knight Burnham, Lake City; one sister, Ethel Peal Palmer; one brother, Marshall E. Palmer (Julie Ann), all of Union County; several nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Old Oak Grove Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lake Butler. Family and friends are invited. She will be put to rest in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Alfred Cleveland Weed Jr.
Alfred Cleveland Weed Jr., 86, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Avalon Health Care Center, Lake City.
Born in Syracuse, N.Y., Mr. Weed lived in Lake City for one year, having moved from Gainesville. Mr. Weed, a Unitarian and member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in both Gainesville and Fairfax, Va., worked as an electrical engineer for the aerospace industry. Mr. Weed received degrees from both Purdue and Northwestern universities and was a member of the engineering honorary society Sigma Xi and R.O.T.C. honorary fraternity Scabbard and Blade. An active licensed amateur radio operator for more than 70 years, Mr. Weed was an officer in the Merchant Marines during his youth and a 1st Lieutenant in the Signal Corp, U.S. Army during WWII.
Mr. Weed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maria; one son Robert Weed (Jefflyn), Huntsville, Ala.; two daughters, Nancy Weed Taylor (Eric), Lake City, and Betty Weed (Steven Jackobs), Austin, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service with military honors will be held for Mr. Weed, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at Costanzo Funeral Home, VA Chaplin Donald Runyon presiding.

Mary Elizabeth Blackmon
Mary Elizabeth Blackmon , 83, of Lake City died Friday, May 4, 2001, in the Baptist Medical Center, Jacksonville, following a long illness.
Mrs. Blackmon was a native of Thomasville, Ga., and the daughter of the late Charlie and Onor Cone Pafford. Mrs. Blackmon was the widow of the late William Blackmon, and was preceded in death by her first husband, Reuben McGalliard.
Mrs. Blackmon had resided in Lake City for the past 29 years and was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church of Lake City, serving as the social committee director, nursery coordinator, baptismal committee and a member of the Womenıs Missionary Union, and was employed for eight years at First Baptist Church of Lake City as a nursery worker.
Survivors include: one son, James R. McGalliard, Lake City; one stepson, Kenneth Blackmon, Tampa; one stepdaughter, Sara Lashley, Lake City; one brother, Clifford Pafford, Jacksonville; two sisters, Joy Smith, Wellborn and Bobbie Holmes, Whitehouse; three nieces, Marcia Finney, Orlando and Melissa Driscoll and Debra Robarts, both of Lake City; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7 in the chapel of Guerry Funeral Home with the Rev. James Roberts, pastor of Pine Grove Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery, Lake City.

Talmadge E. Sistrunk
Mr. Talmadge E. Sistrunk, 78, of White Springs passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The White Springs native and lifelong resident was a carpenter. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Congregational Holiness Church in White Springs.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Edith Sistrunk, White Springs; five sons, Edward Sistrunk, Pocatello, Idaho, Charlie Sistrunk, Preston, Idaho, Bobby Sistrunk, Fred Sistrunk and Cecil Sistrunk, all of Pocatello, Idaho; five stepchildren, Nancy Register, Live Oak, Kenny Dunaway, Monroe Dunaway, Susan Cheshire and Patsy Powell, all of White Springs; one brother, Bobby Ray Sistrunk, White Springs; two sisters, Estelle Sistrunk, White Springs and Thelma Norris, Lake City; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 8 at Congregational Holiness Church. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, White Springs. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 7 at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, Jasper.

Robert Earl Croft
Mr. Robert Earl Croft, 76, of Lulu died Monday, May 7, 2001, in Shands at Lake Shore hospital following a long illness.
Mr. Croft was a native and lifelong resident of Lulu, son of the late Nelson J. and Lillian Cason Croft. Mr. Croft was a farmer and a member of the Lulu Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and on the pulpit committee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming, and most especially his grandchildren. Mr. Croft was preceded in death by one brother, Delbert Croft.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Pearce Croft, Lulu; four sons, Robin Earl Croft, Robert Craig Croft, Reginald Dean "Buddy" Croft, all of Lulu, and Rufus Ariel Croft, Jonesboro, Ark.; two daughters, Cynthia Eileen Croft-Jackson, Titusville, and Rita June Baker, Lulu; three brothers, Pete Croft, Al Croft and James Croft, all of Lulu; one sister, Guinelle Ryan, Lulu; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in Lulu Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis Daniels officiating and the Rev. Wayne Wills, church pastor, and the Rev. Bonnell Napier, pastor of the College Manor Baptist Church, assisting. Interment will follow in New Zion Cemetery, Union County. Annie T. Perkins Dicks
Mrs. Annie Tompkins Perkins Dicks, 84, of Lake City died Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2001, in Lake City Medical Center following an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Columbia County, Mrs. Dicks was the daughter of the late Donald and Mabel Moore Tompkins. She was educated in the Columbia County School System and was a member of the 1934 graduating class of Columbia High School. Mrs. Dicks worked as an operator for the Southern Bell Telephone Co. from 1934 until she retired in 1970. She then worked as a switchboard operator for North Florida Regional Hospital, Lake Shore Hospital and Columbia County Bank. Mrs. Dicks was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Mrs. Dicks was preceded in death by two husbands, Mr. Charlsey J. Perkins, to whom she was married from 1942-73, and Mr. P. Trammel Dicks, to whom she was married from 1977-98. Her seven brothers, Alf, William, Sidney, Zach, "Dude," Jay and Will Tompkins, and one sister, Abby Stuart, also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Dicks is survived by a special niece, Marcia (Billy) Dow, Lake City; four stepdaughters, Julia Perkins Ives, El Paso, Texas, Roberta Perkins Johnson, Carizo Springs, Texas, Louvenia Dicks Smith and Dorothy Jean Dicks Feagle (Aldine), both of Lake City; and a stepson, Wayne Dicks (Betty), Lake City; numerous stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dicks will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in Biggs Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Elmer Crews, Dr. Fritz Fountain and the Rev. Glen Bowen officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Carmel Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at the funeral home. Dupree Leonard Ginn
Dupree Leonard Ginn, 73, of Lake City died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Lake City Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Ginn was a native of Hamilton County and resided in Lake City most of his life. He is the son of the late Tom Leonard and Maggie Johns Ginn. He is preceded in death by his wife, Essie Ginn, one daughter, Juanell Johnson, a grandson, Larry Eubanks, two brothers, Johnny and Byron Ginn and a sister, Glenda Ginn.
Mr. Ginn served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
Mr. Ginn was very active in church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and was on the board of directors for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Harris, Lake City, Carolyn (Bill) Begue, Valdosta, Ga., and Ann (Floyd) Goodman, Perry; one son, Dwight (Sylvia) Hall, White Springs; three sisters, Annette Koon, Mary King and Lois Kimbrell, Lake City; one sister-in-law, Mary Lou Ginn, Lake City; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, in First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Denver Surgener and the Rev. Forest Combs officiating. Kendall Paul Hirsh Sr.
Kendall Paul Hirsh Sr., 57, of Route 11, Box 28010, Lake City, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at his home due to cancer.
Mr. Hirsh was born June 20, 1943, in Baldwinsville, N.Y., and came to Lake City from West Palm Beach two years ago. He was a driver for Pritchett Trucking Co., Lake Butler, was a member of Lake City Church of Christ, was an excellent brick mason and had donated approximately 30 gallons of blood to the blood bank.
Survivors include his wife, Lynne Hirsh; mother, Helen Hirsh, Baldwinsville; mother-in-law, Florence Payne, Lake City; sons, Kendall Paul Hirsh Jr. and wife Natalie, Lake City, a nephew they raised as a son, Marty Williams and wife Leslie, West Palm Beach; daughter, Ashlee Lynne Hirsh, Lake City; brother, Fredrick Hirsh, Baldwinsville; sisters, Chris Phelps, Hilda Calkins, Mary Ann Cook, Harriet Hirsh, all of Baldwinsville, Pauline Williams, Solbay, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Jessica, Whitney and Austin.
Memorial services will be held at the Lake City Church of Christ at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Ken to Lake City Church of Christ for a new sound system.

Clarence Leo Cooper
Mr. Clarence Leo Cooper, 83, of Starke died at his home Monday, May 7, 2001, following a brief illness.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed at Camp Blanding, worked for the Florida Forest Service and retired from Dupont. He was born in Dixie County to Charlie and Susan Cooper. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Madison Street Baptist Church where he served as deacon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James A. Cooper and Joseph Franklin Cooper, one sister, stillborn, one foster son, Morley Griffis, one foster son-in-law, Cecil Padgett, and one great-grandson, D.J. Cooper.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby I. Cooper, Starke; two sons, Robert L. and wife Judy Beck Cooper, Laceyıs Springs, Ala., Donald R. Sr. and wife Vicki Mosher Cooper, Starke; one daughter, Clairnell Cooper Ellis and husband Gordon, Marianna; two foster daughters, Bonnie Griffis Padgett and husband Charles Aaron, Hampton, and Jannie Griffis Padgett, Starke; one brother, Cecil R. Cooper and wife Mary, Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Bessie Cooper Anderson, Lake City, Gladys Cooper Dean, Williston, Colleen Cooper Judah and husband Kulhman, Chiefland; two sisters-in-law, Jean Davis Cooper, Chiefland, and Faye Poucher Cooper, Jensen Beach; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Deacon Berry R. Griffin Sr.
Deacon Berry R. Griffin Sr., 87, of Lake City died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Lake City Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born in Columbia County to the late Dewitt and Lillian Griffin. He was employed at Columbia County Bank as a custodian until his retirement. Berry was a deacon at the Falling Creek Baptist Church. His first wife, Leila Bell Griffin, a daughter, Ruby Bell Hicks and two sons, Berry Griffin Jr. and John L. Griffin, and his second wife, Rosa Lee Griffin, preceded him in death.
Survivors include: four daughters, Hattie (Ervin) Fleming, Delois (Herman) Holland, Voncile (Steve) Miller, Lake City, and Lillian (James) Bryant, Daytona Beach; two Sons, Morris (Joyce) Griffin, Miami, and Jonathan (Essie) Griffin, Lake City; 29 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Cassie (Jimmy) Robinson and Selma Ward, both of Palmetto; three daughters-in-law, Dora Lee Griffin, Yvonne Griffin and Pauline Griffin; a very devoted friend, Juanita Hunter; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Falling Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeremiah Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Falling Creek Cemetery. Kenneth Edwin Rhodes
Kenneth Edwin Rhodes died Thursday, April 26, 2001.
He was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Orlando. He was raised in Lake City and graduated from Columbia High School in 1940, Georgia Tech University in 1949 and Syracuse University in 1959. He was a veteran of World War II, Army Signal Corps, Okinawa, Japan. He retired from IBM in 1982 after 30 years as an electrical and development engineer.
Survivors include: his wife of 47 years, Margery; three children, Douglas M., Alexandria, Va., Nancy L., Westminster, Colo., Susan E., Oldsmar; one sister, Ann Frank, Tamarac, and a brother, Fred M., Meridian, Miss.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm. Saturday, May 12, at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 300 E. Bay Drive, Largo, FL 33770.

Mary Lou Odom Yarbrough
Mrs. Mary Lou Odom Yarbrough, 76, of Lake City died Monday afternoon, May 7, 2001, at the home of her daughter after an extended illness.
She was born in Glenville, Ga. and moved in 1946 to Lake Butler, where she resided until moving to Lake City in January 2000. She graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College, Tifton Ga. and the University of Georgia. She taught school in Lake Butler for 32 years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and a member of First Baptist Church, Raiford.
Surviving are: three daughters, Sharon Y. Brady, Lake Butler, Shelia Y. Roberts and Sonja Y. Giebeig, both of Lake City; one sister, Betty Odom, Glenville, Ga.; five granddaughters and one great-grandson; her caregiver, Denise Browning, Lake City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Raiford, with the Rev. Johnnie Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in Dyal Cemetery near Starke.

Ruby Louise Barlow
Mrs. Ruby Louise Barlow, 82, of Fort White died early Wednesday morning, May 9, 2001, in Lake City Medical Center.
A native of Sebring, Mrs. Barlow lived in Fort White for the last 31 years, having moved from Stuart. Mrs. Barlow and her late husband, Cleve Barlow, were the former owners of Barlowıs Restaurant and C.B.ıs Tubes in Fort White. Mrs. Barlow was an avid cat lover and was also of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Barlow was preceded in death by her husband, Cleve Barlow, in 1982.
Mrs. Barlow is survived by three sisters-in-law, Annie Nelson, Milton, Betty Barlow, Navarre, Ruby Broxson, Pensacola; four grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. One special caregiver, Nancy Mayers, Fort White, also survives.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, in Fort White Cemetery with Dr. Rodney Baker officiating. Interment will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of BIGGS FUNERAL HOME, 3801 S. First St., Lake City.

Raymond T. Pellino
Raymond T. Pellino, 84, of Tallahassee died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in Tallahassee.
A native of Rochester, N.Y., he had lived in Tallahassee since September. He was the retired chief of radiology for the Veterans Affairs hospital in Gainesville, was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Gainesville.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Florine Pellino; sons, John Pellino, Tallahassee, Jerry Pellino, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Jason Pellino, Lisa Pellino and Marcus Pellino, all of Tallahassee.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Tallahassee Memory Gardens with burial to follow.

Jerrine Procuniar
Jerrine Procuniar, 81, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Procuniar was a resident of Lake City, moving here in 1984 from Princeton, W.Va. She was of the Protestant faith and loved crafts and was active for many years in craft shows. Preceding her in death were her son, Gary Von Atkins in 1947, her daughter, Donna Sue Atkins in 1948, and her husband, Barney Procuniar in 1970.
Survivors include her son, Larry Fon Atkins, Columbia City; her daughters, Joyce Ann Davis, Hartwell, Ga., Verna Fatima Buchanan, Mundelein, Ill., Marry Lee Weeks, Hayesville, N.C.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, May 12, at Burlington Santa Fe Cemetery, Branford, with pastor Leroy Dobbs officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. prior to the service. SHERRILL-GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, 616 S. Frank Hofmeister
Mr. Frank Hofmeister, 80, of Lake City, died late Thursday afternoon, May 10, 2001, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville.
A native of Athens, Ga., Mr. Hofmeister moved to Lake City in 1983 from Hollywood. Mr. Hofmeister retired from Eastern Airlines in 1983 after 20 years of service as an aircraft mechanic. Mr. Hofmeister was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 27 and the Shrine Club, both of Lake City. Reading scientific and history books were two ways Mr. Hofmeister enjoyed his free time and educated himself. Being an avid baseball fan, Mr. Hofmeister enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves on television. Mr. Hofmeister was preceded in death in 1986 by his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Grace Elizabeth Hofmeister.
Mr. Hofmeister is survived by one son, Frank Michael Hofmeister, Mauldin, S.C.; two daughters, Elizabeth Mullen (Pete) and Susan Solomon (Harold), both of Lake City; one brother, Olin Hofmeister, Kannapolis, N.C.; two grandchildren, Michael Hofmeister, Miami, and Jennifer Hofmeister, Raleigh, N.C.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday May 13, 2001, in Biggs Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Tyre officiating. No visiting hours are scheduled. Arrangements are under the direction of Biggs Funeral Home, 3801 S. First St., Lake City.

Sarah F. Scott
Sarah F. Scott, 64, of Lake City died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Shands of Lake Shore hospital.
Mrs. Scott was a native of Buffalo, N.Y., and had lived in Lake City for the last 23 years. Prior to living in Lake City, she lived in Homestead for a number of years. She is the daughter of the late Peter and Angeline Giorlandino Falletta.
Survivors include her husband, Herman Scott, Lake City; one daughter, Angela Cage, Live Oak; three sons, Richard and (Sherry) Crook, Brandon, Miss., James and (Carolyn) Crook, Weaverville, N.C., and John and (Nicole) Cage, Murphysboro, Tenn.; three sisters, Angeline Muto, Buffalo, Josephine and (Henry) Piwowarczyk, Buffalo, Carm Biondo, East Aurora, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph and (Patricia) Falletta, Darien Center, N.Y., Charles and (Jo Ann) Falletta, Travares; and 14grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Geiger officiating. Sherrill-Guerry Funeral Home, 616 S. Marion St., Lake City, is in charge of all arrangements.

Johnie Ray Morgan
Johnie Ray Morgan, 69, of White Springs died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
Mr. Morgan was born in Georgia and raised in Hamilton County. He worked for the state and was a farmer. He retired from Occidental Chemical Co. in 1996.
Mr. Morgan was a deacon and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover ³R.G.² and Sally Peterson; and a brother, Bruce Morgan.
Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife, Bernice Morgan, White Springs; three sons, J.B. Dorman (Jennifer), Jackie Morgan (Barbara) and Johnie Morgan, all of White Springs; one brother, Morris Morgan, Jasper; two sisters, Betty Jean Murray, Lake City, and Shirley Pitts, Mississippi; a sister-in-law, Virginia Morgan, White Springs; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Friendship Baptist Church near Jasper. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Friendship Baptist Church, County Road 137, Jasper, FL 32052.

Howard Leo Brown
Howard Leo Brown, 81, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Vencor Hospital in Green Cove Springs.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Brown lived in Lake City for 25 years, having moved from Miami. Mr. Brown was a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Brown was awarded the American Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal for service to his country.
Mr. Brown leaves behind two close friends who will dearly miss him, Bruce and Patricia Bryant, both of Lake City.

Billy C. Howland
Billy C. Howland, 67, of Live Oak passed away at his home Sunday, May 13, 2001.
Mr. Howland was a Suwannee County native, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, ran the W.B. Howland Co. for more than 40 years, was a member of the Suwannee County Club, board member of the Westwood Christian School, was a member, greeter, co-chairman of the ushers, a deacon and driver for the bus ministry at the Westwood Baptist Church in Live Oak.
Mr. Billy Howland is survived by his wife, Barbara Howland, Live Oak; three daughters, Beverly Kish, New Smyrna Beach, Pam Yanossy, Live Oak, and Patti Goodson, Lake City; one son, Bill Howland, Live Oak; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Fletcher, Live Oak; nine grandchildren, Alex, Le Anne, B.J., William, Matthew, Graham, Philip, Caroline and Griffin.
Funeral services for Mr. Howland will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, in the Westwood Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Deas officiating. Interment will follow in the Live Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Hospice of North Central Florida, 1900 Gateway Blvd., Lake City, FL 32024 or Westwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 11th Street, Live Oak, FL 32060.

Robert McDuffie
Robert McDuffie, 71, of Lake City died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Vencor Hospital of North Florida in Green Cove Springs following an extended illness.
Survivors include five children, Robert McDuffie Jr., Tampa, Viola Anderson, Evelyn Mobley, Marshall McDuffie, all of Tampa; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services for Robert McDuffie will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Combs Funeral Home Chapel with Elder John Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Rest Cemetery.

John L. Baker
Mr. John L. Baker, 66, of Lake City died Sunday, May 13, 2001.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Lake City and was the son of the late Mr. Walter and Mrs. Alvanna Baker.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Baker; two children, Geneve and Eric Baker; one sister, Jean (Steve) Bell, Lake City; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.D. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Huntsville Cemetery.

Margaret MacQuarrie Crocker
Margaret MacQuarrie Crocker, 91, of Lake City went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at The Health Center of Lake City.
Mrs. Crocker was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, on Aug. 13, 1909. She moved to Lake City from Butler, Penn., in 1962. She was a retired nurse, having worked at Lake Shore Hospital for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Crocker is survived by her husband of 58 years, Paul Crocker, Lake City; one son, Joe (Susan) Crocker, Lake City; two daughters, Elizabeth Moseley, Miami, and Ruth Crocker, LaCrosse; one brother, Ken (Alice) MacQuarrie, Hampden, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Mindy (Kevin) Aldridge, St. Paul, Minn., Adam Crocker and Rachel Crocker, both of Lake City.
Funeral services for Mrs. Crocker will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Scott Elkins and Carson Brittain officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Bible Broadcasting Network, Charlotte, N.C. 28241-7300, or to a charity of your choice.

Emma Lee Cason Robbins
Mrs. Emma Lee Cason Robbins, 73, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at her home in Calistoga, Calif.
Mrs. Robbins was the daughter of Nubia and Lucy Snelgrove Cason, and a former resident of Lake City. She graduated from Mason School in 1945. She was preceded in death by a son, Dean Aaron Robbins.
Survivors include longtime friend and companion, Attilio Fundy; one son, Benjamin H. Robbins III; four daughters, Lynette (Thomas) Phillips, Alaska, Constance (Frank) Osburn, California, Josephine (William) Oberst, Kentucky, Delphine Briggs, California; three sisters, Frances Brooker, White Springs, Dorothy (Ray) Markham, Branford, Audrey (Archie) Brown, Lake City; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Philippi Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, with the Revs. Lewis Daniels and Carl Chauncey officiating. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Philippi Cemetery Association c/o Frances Brooker, Route 1, Box 1880, White Springs, FL 32096.

Phonso Acosta Young
Our dearly departed Sister Phonso Acosta Young, of 1505 W. Seventh St., Jacksonville, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2001.
Sister Young was a member of Church of God Sanctuary of Praise, the Rev. Dr. L. Martin Wright pastor. Sister Young was born Feb. 26, 1940, the sixth child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Acosta, and grew up in Lake City, where she attended New Hope Elementary and Caver High schools. She later met and married the late Andrew L. Young.
Sister Young leaves behind two sons, Michael and Randy Young; three grandsons, two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter as well as a host of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephew, in-laws, cousins and friends.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Church of God Sanctuary of Praise, 5755 South Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32219.

Mary Jane Arnett
Mary Jane Arnett, 90, of St. Augustine died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine.
Born just outside Lake City, she lived in St. Augustine since 1930, where she had been a member of First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 12, and the Pilot Club.
Mrs. Arnett is survived by her son, Donald E. Arnett of Orlando; two granddaughters, Pamela Arnett of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Elizabeth Arnett of Birmingham, Ala., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by J.D. Arnett, her husband of 67 years.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine, with the Rev. Bettye Patterson, Flagler Hospital chaplain, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in St. Augustine. Friends may visit funeral home from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of the services. Flowers are gratefully declined, and the family requests that those wishing make a contribution in her memory to a favorite charity.
Arrangements are being handled by CRAIG FUNERAL HOME, St. Augustine.

Glen Newton Carver
Glen Newton Carver, 54, of Wellborn, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2001, after a long illness.
The Lake City native lived in Wellborn most of his life. He was a salesman of parts and services, member of the Elks Lodge of Lake City and member of Mount Beulah Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Carver, of Wellborn; one daughter, Julie Gallamore, Wellborn; her father, M.B. Carver, Wellborn; one sister, Debra Gamble, Live Oak; one brother, Daryl Carver, Wellborn.
Services will be held Saturday, May 19, at Mount Beulah Baptist Church, Wellborn, with the Revs. Charles Knight, Ken Leatherman, Dewight Law and Dale Brannon officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 18.
Interment will follow in Mount Beulah Cemetery. DANIELS FUNERAL HOME of Live Oak is in charge of all arrangements.
