Funeral services for Lucille Ione (Arthurs) Hamons, 85, of Hydro will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at "The Chapel" of the Lockstone Funeral Home in Weatherford with Roger Parker officiating. Burial will follow at the Hydro Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Lucille was born April 13, 1915, in Abingdon, Ill., to Charles and Myrtle (Jackson) Arthurs and died at her home on Route 66 in Hydro Friday, Aug. 18.
She moved with her folks to Binger when she was a baby and attended grade school in Binger. At age 12, Lucille moved with her folks to Hinton where she graduated high school in 1934.
On June 20, 1934, Lucille married Carl Hamons of Hydro. In 1941, Carl and Lucille bought the gas staion and courts built by Carl Ditmore on Route 66 one mile southwest of Hydro. Lucille ran this business until the day she died.
She was a member of the Methodist Church of Hydro. Lucille belonged to the Oklahoma Route 66 Association and to associations in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico and California.
On June 3, 1997, Lucille’s biography, "Mother of the Mother Road", was published. In October of 1997, Lucille’s was named to the National Historic Register. On Sept. 18, 1999, Lucille received the Oklahoma Route 66 Hall of Fame Award. In 1999, her song, "Lucille, Mother of the Mother Road", written by Lou Morra with music by Ron Dunivan, was recorded.
Memorials can be made to the Oklahoma Route 66 Association or Lucille Hamons’ Memorial Insurance Fund.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hamons on Jan. 31, 1971; her son, Carl Robert Hamons Jr. on Aug. 29, 1962; her parents, three sisters, Glennie Phipps, Charlesa Henshaw and Marie Brents; three brothers, Leroy Arthurs, Frank Arthurs and Bill Arthurs; and a grandson, Randy Hamons.
Lucille is survived by two daughters, Delpha Dene Martin and husband Carl of Grants, N.M., and Cheryl Nowka and husband Paul of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Zoren (Whitey) Arthurs of Clinton and Warren Arthurs of Hinton; a sister, Carol Coterill of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
