Gladys Earlene (Skaggs) Davidson
This is not an eulogy; it is an anthology. It is the
story of a family, a family much like the ones from which
were derived all who gather here today. They came as the
threads which would make the tapestry of this culture to be
hung on the walls of time. They sank their roots deeply into
the red clay and sand of this land. This is their story.
This is Gladys’ anthology told in her words and written by
her hand.
Funeral services for Gladys Earlene (Skaggs) Davidson, 92
year-old Eakly, Oklahoma resident, will be held on Monday,
October 29, 2007, 2:00 P.M. in the Eakly Methodist Church
with Kay Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Eakly
Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home of
Weatherford. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30
P.M. on Sunday, October 28, 2007, at the funeral home.
Gladys was born on June 5, 1915, in Grandfield, Oklahoma
to Luther Winter and Jessie Mae (Brisendine) Skaggs and she
departed this life on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Epworth
Villa in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
When Gladys was nine years old, she and the Skaggs family
moved to Caddo County in 1924. All of their earthly
possessions were contained in two covered wagons, one drawn
team of horses, Maude and Nellie.
Gladys helped to drive one of the wagons part of the
time. At other times she rode a pony to drive the family’s
five milk cows during the more than one hundred mile journey
through the mountains and across the prairie of southern
Oklahoma.
In March of that year she became a third grade student at
Pleasant Valley School one-half mile north of Eakly. Nine
years later she was graduated valedictorian of the first
class to complete four years of high school at the new Eakly
High School.
Gladys married classmate, Charles Harold Davidson on
November 4, 1933 at the Eakly Methodist parsonage. The
pastor was Reverend Earl Barnes with attendants Winona
Barnes and Harold’s brother, Raymond.
The next morning found them in the cotton patch with
sacks on their backs, and November 4, 2006, they celebrated
their seventy-third wedding anniversary.
After two years of farming, they left the farm as
entrepreneurs, always working side by side. A traveling
roller rink and bakeries in Memphis, Wellington, and
Wheeler, Texas, and Hooker and Carnegie, Oklahoma, led them
home to the family’s farm, a haven east of Eakly since 1911,
in 1952.
A son, Harold Dean was born in Wheeler and a daughter,
Linda Gail was born in Liberal, Kansas, when they were in
Hooker.
Gladys was Mother Advisor of the Order of the Rainbow
Girls in Hooker, and she assisted in the institution of
Rainbow Assemblies in Liberal, Kansas, and Carnegie. She was
past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Carnegie.
She was a member of the Eakly Methodist Church, where she
taught Sunday school, and an active member of the Women’s
Societies in Hooker and Carnegie.
However, her first priority was her family in whose
service no task was too menial; from cotton patch to garden
patch, from roller skates to decorating cakes, she served.
They rented their land to neighbors and friends and began
their last “Profession”. From 1953 to 1973 they worked for
King’s Irrigation Service.
One of her great delights after returning to Eakly was to
use her training and experience to volunteer to cater
wedding and anniversary receptions as gifts for many
relatives and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Harold Davidson of
their home in Eakly, Oklahoma; one son, Dr. Harold D.
Davidson and his wife, Wanda Lorraine of Ft. Worth, Texas;
one daughter, Linda Gail Bennett of Hydro, Oklahoma; three
granddaughters, Lori Deckert and husband, Carl, Angela
Shipley and husband, Kevin, and Heather Curtis and husband,
Robert; two grandsons, Bill and Darin Bennett; six
great-grandsons, Erik and Jason Deckert, Robert Shipley,
Stephen Curtis, and Payton and Cheyenne Bennett; and one
great-granddaughter, Kathrynne Curtis; one brother, Calvin
Skaggs and wife, Donnie of Seminole, Oklahoma; and one
sister, Beulah Beadles of Great Bend, Kansas. She was
preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Eugene,
Lewis, Floyd, Leslie, and Luther, Jr.; and one son-in-law,
Bill Bennett; but she lives on in the ideals, which she
imparted to those she loved.
