year-old Hydro, Oklahoma resident, will be held on Friday,
October 5, 2007, 10:00 A.M. at the Church of Christ in
Hydro, Oklahoma with Landon Rowell and Kendall Abner
officiating. Burial will follow in Hydro Masonic Cemetery
under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Verlin was born on October 2, 1930 to
Emmett Horace and Velta Irene (Peterson) Long in Piedmont,
Oklahoma and passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at
Weatherford Regional Hospital in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Shortly after Verlin’s birth the family moved to Hydro where
he has lived ever since. Verlin graduated from Hydro High
School in 1948, and earned his degree in Physical Education
and History from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He
served in the United States Army from 1952-1954, spending
sixteen months in Korea, as a Sergeant during the Korean
Conflict.
Verlin loved to play softball and was a
star pitcher for the local community league and carried it
on through his Army years and through the early years of his
3 daughters. On June 6, 1951, he married Jackie Thomas.
After his discharge from the Army; he worked for the
family’s Long Motor Company in Hydro. In 1962, Verlin and
Jackie purchased the Hydro Dry Goods from Jackie’s parents,
Cody and Myrtle Thomas. They later expanded the business
into a department store, which they ran until December 23,
1989, when they sold the store to Susan Kimble.
Verlin also began managing his father’s
business Long Produce as a Fur and Wool buyer in 1976,
retiring in 1990. Verlin and Jackie have been active in the
Hydro Church of Christ, with Verlin serving as an elder.
Verlin was always community minded. He
gave of himself all through his life for many of those
thankless jobs that, “someone” has to do. Verlin and Jackie
were class parents for the seniors of Hydro High School for
many years. Because of their love of the younger generation,
Verlin, Jackie, and his in-laws, Bob and Rita Russell ran
the Hydro Movie Theater and the Hydro Skating Rink in the
1950’s and 1960’s. They screened those new fangled
“techni-color” movies and even stopped the movie and gave
every kid their money back when an “inappropriate” kissing
scene slipped by their initial screening.
Verlin and his family crew of the Hydro
Dry Goods and North Side Drug took over the Bingo stand at
the Hydro Free Fair. Verlin was chief caller for over 40
years and all the “boyfriends” of his girls worked the late
shift on Saturday to prove that they were truly husband
material.
He served on the Hydro school board for 13
years, and many years on the Hydro Community Club. He served
17 years on the Hydro City Council and as Mayor for 3 years.
Verlin loved to play golf. He tried, in
vain, to teach his son-in-laws the skills needed to enjoy
the game. He was much more successful with his two Grandsons
and he loved to take the boys to the Weatherford golf course
where he was a charter member.
Verlin is survived by his wife, Jackie of
their home in Hydro, Oklahoma; three daughters, “the twins”,
Glenda Long and her husband, Joe, Brenda Sweeney and her
husband, Stan, and Tammy Bright and her husband, Curt who
